“There’s no way you are walking around like this!” screamed the young man trying a period cramp simulator for the first time. Period cramps are the price you pay for being a woman and the right to bear children if you so choose, at least that is what I always told my daughter. (The Supreme Court may have changed that a tad recently.) Most women I know have gone to bed with a heating pad just to help the pain be a little more bearable. Add Midol, Tylenol, Advil, Motrin and/or exercise, along with a prayer that it will pass quickly. Now for curious men, there is a period cramp stimulator, which allows guys to experience the same discomfort, so they can sympathize a little. I bet guys will be lining up to try it out. lol. I watched a video showing four men and four women hooked up to the machine at various times. All the guys ended up either on their knees, on the floor, or in a sitting down position on the sofa. The big question on the table now, do they make a childbirth or menopause simulator? I still have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.
Last week I told you about the woman who woke from a two-year coma after being beaten in the head, immediately naming her brother as her attacker, can rest easy now. Her brother, a very unhealthy man, was only in custody for seven days when he died. Crazy story.
Let’s face it, there are people in our lives that we all just put up with, and then there is Dave Mayberry. I know my face lights up when I talk to him, or his lovely wife, Kay. They are simply people that make you happy while encouraging laughter and smiles. Well, Dave called me last week to tell me that he has accepted the position of Director of Business Development at First National Bank LJ, and to let me know that the little plant I sent to him when he went to work at The Hester Group, was moving with him. I hated to tell him that he definitely deserved a new plant after all these years, but I’m sure I’ll find something new to take when I visit. First National Bank is one lucky company, and smart, too. PS. This is not a paid advertisement 😊 simply a reminder for you to run by and say hello to Dave. If he’s not already your friend, then you need to get by there quickly and introduce yourself. What was it that John Wayne said, “Slap some bacon on a biscuit and let’s go! We’re burnin’ daylight!” Congratulations, Dave. We all love you!
Recently, as I opened a bottle of wine, I wondered about recycling the tin, aluminum, or polyethylene foil capsule over the cork. (It used to be lead, but that was phased out by law in 1996.) It’s always been there as a barrier to oxygen, insects and rodents that love to eat cork, and well as decoration. According to Earth911.com, you can leave on the foil, or put it in with your metal recycling. Just remember to remove all liquids from the bottles. No problem. 😊 FYI… some wineries are now eliminating the capsule and/or the cork.
Cork comes from the bark of the Cork Oak tree. It is bark that can take 25 to 50 years to get to the point where it is usable for wine bottles, but then each tree can only be harvested every nine years so as to not do permanent damage to the inner bark of the tree.
Chris Evans, aka Captain America, plans to produce and play Gene Kelly in a new movie based on Evans’ original idea about a boy working in Hollywood in the 1950’s that finds an imaginary friend in Kelly. A hand-painted mandolin owned by Janis Joplin that she had gifted to Jimi Hendrix, recently sold at auction for $281,250, after 29 bidders fought for the winning bid. The two influential musicians were friends, but were never able to record music together, since they both died at the young age of 27. Martha Stewart is opening her first restaurant, the Bedford by Martha Stewart, inspired by her country home in Bedford, NY, but it will be at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel.

Paul Sorvino, the coldhearted mobster Paulie Cicero in GoodFellas died at 83. He trained as an opera singer, but asthma made him focus more on acting. Tony Dow, best known as the big brother Wally in Leave It to Beaver, is very sick and on hospice care, but still alive. His son says he has a fighting heart.
Former sports star Bo Jackson covered all funeral expenses for the families of the victims of the Uvalde school massacre so they would have one less thing to worry about as they grieved. Jackson flew in and presented a check for $170,000. NICE.
Back in 2008 during a campaign stop, then presidential candidate Barack Obama said this; “It is wonderful to be back in Oregon. Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states.” He was criticized for his mistake. Especially Republicans. Then last week Herschel Walker (American former football running back who played in the NFL for 12 seasons and is the Republican nominee in the 2022 US Senate election in Georgia) said, “If you don’t believe in the country, leave and go somewhere else. If it’s the worst state, why are you here? Why don’t you leave? Go to another – there’s, what, 51 more other states that you can go to?” Actually, there are 50 states in the United States, for those of you that don’t remember, and you really should remember. It is pretty basic information. Such a nice round number. I really can understand forgetfulness when associated with fatigue, and lack of sleep on a campaign trail, because I think both men knew the answer. But… maybe Walker has a few other faux pas on his scoreboard. He just recently acknowledged he has three children with women he was not married to, in addition to his son by his former wife, and he has not served in law enforcement as he previously claimed. Then he responded to the Uvalde school shootings with, “Cain killed Abel” and followed with a suggestion of, “What about getting a department that can look at young men that’s looking at women that looking at social media.” Walker also did not graduate from the University of Georgia in the top 1% of his class, in fact he did not graduate from there at all, and he was not valedictorian of his high school class.
Velveeta processed cheese brand teamed with Nails.INC to launch a set of nail stickers and two limited-edition cheese-scented colors called La Dolce Velveeta yellow and Finger Food red. It is supposed to make your nails look as smooth as Velveeta feels.
If that’s not enough, Velveeta now has come up with a Veltini… the vodka is infused with Velveeta, the rim of the martini glass is dripping with Velveeta, and each olive is stuffed with a cheese cube accompanied on the toothpick by cheesy Velveeta shells. I can’t tell you personally if it’s good or not, but if I get the opportunity to try it, I will. Don’t knock it, ‘til we try it. The press release says, “a decadent and indulgent summer sip made for pleasure-seekers.”
A 22-year-old British student at Oxford died in Greece, after being dismembered by the blades of a helicopter that he had just exited. He was being led away from the helicopter when he quickly turned and walked back, but he was talking on his cellphone and could not hear onlookers shouting at him to stop. He was struck in the head by the high-speed blades and killed instantly. Put down your phone!
La Nina, the natural but overwhelming weather event linked to drought, very little rain, agricultural losses, and wildfires in the western US, along with hurricanes in the Atlantic, is acting a little weird. It doesn’t know it is time to leave and give us a break. The current La Nina formed in the summer of 2020, strengthened in the winter, rested a tiny bit for a couple of months, and then it was back. Typically, second year La Nina’s tend to be weaker, but it set a record intensity that spring, according to the sea surface temperatures. My sister and I drove to Hot Springs last week for my uncle’s funeral and it was so hard to watch the cattle fight for the scrawniest bit of shade, right next to totally dry mud holes that are begging for rain to fill them up. I know some cattle were dead or dying, because there were buzzards right there sharing the shade with them.
A chess-playing robot broke the finger of a 7-year-old boy at a Moscow chess competition. I watched the video, and it looked like the robot just placed the chess piece right on top of his finger, not turning loose, and the truth is a robot does NOT understand hearing ouch!! no matter how loud you say it. Immediately, several men came to the child’s aid. The injured boy returned to the tournament the next day in a cast. The robot looked like something out of Star Wars.
The WHO (World Health Organization) has now declared monkeypox an international public health emergency, as infections are increasing quickly. That is the organization’s loudest alarm bell. Contrary to what you think you may have heard from your neighbor, friend, or Facebook, which made you feel totally safe about this disease, it is primarily spread through CLOSE PERSON-TO-PERSON CONTACT. At this point, scientists know that the virus can pass from direct contact with sores (augh, have you seen the pictures?!?) along with bodily fluids and respiratory droplets from infected people. Male or female… the virus does not care or even know the difference, but scientists are now trying to find out whether the rare disease is spreading in other ways, since current cases don’t all look like traditional monkeypox. We are a pandemic-weary world. UPDATE: This morning the news title said, “Monkeypox is Spreading Faster than the Data about it, Hindering Mitigation Efforts,” plus it’s now found in Brazoria County.
An unvaccinated young adult from NY has contracted the first US case of polio in nearly a decade. The person developed paralysis about a month ago and had not traveled outside the country recently. They think that the person had a vaccine-derived strain of the virus, possibly from someone who received a live vaccine, which is available in other countries, but not the US.
Las Vegas is limiting the size of their swimming pools now, capping dimensions to about the size of a three-car garage. Now let me see if I have this right, Lake Mead is drying up so they are worried about whether they will have drinking water or not, and you can still build a pool bigger than many homes. Have a great week. Be sure to read the final classified of the paper this week. I’m praying you are a good dancer. 😊 LISA

If you have been to the store lately, you know that some cleaning goods are in short supply. Last week, I shopped for Lysol/Clorox wipes, soap and hand sanitizer for the office, but could only find liquid soap, which was fine because twenty seconds of handwashing with actual ‘soap and water is what’s recommended to get your hands clean. But, if you don’t have soap and water available, then you can use hand sanitizer. Evidently there have been some crazy recipes circulating online that claim you can make a homemade hand sanitizer out of Tito’s vodka and aloe vera. Yes, on Gunsmoke, Kitty and Marshall Dillon might have used some cheap, rot-gut whiskey to disinfect the hole where he pulled out the gunslinger’s bullet, but in 2020, Tito’s Handmade Vodka will not kill the germs you’re looking to get rid of because it’s only 40% alcohol and that does not meet the current recommendation of the CDC. So, wash your hands, keep them away from your face, and save your perfectly good vodka because we may need it later. If you ever must use vodka, the suggestion is to use 180 proof to have any benefits.
A recipe for legitimate DIY hand sanitizer follows. When you use it, be sure to completely coat your hands (dripping wet) and then let them air dry which is the CDC-approved method for effective hand disinfecting. RECIPE: In a glass bowl or measuring cup, mix one-third cup aloe vera gel with two-thirds cup 99% isopropyl alcohol until blended. Then add a few drops of essential oils to make it smell better. This will be runnier than the hand sanitizers that you buy because of the quantity of alcohol it takes.
Brooklyn federal judge, Jack Weinstein, recently announced his retirement at the age of 98. When asked what his future plans might be, he said “I would like to get my masters-degree in history.” Nice.
Amazon’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos, is pledging $10 billion to help fight climate change and will launch the Bezos Earth Fund. He wrote, “Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change.” That amounts to about 7.5 percent of his current wealth…well, that may have been his total wealth last week before the stock market…hmmm 😊
The longest-running musical in world history, The Fantasticks, has a few more shows (through March 15th) at Stages Theatre in Houston. My son was there working, so AE and I got tickets. Great show. 713-527-0220. Then we buzzed over to Katz’s Deli for Matzo Ball soup, Reuben and Scottish Smoked Salmon sandwiches, Central Market for coffee, then to UH to load up and let spring break begin. Great day!
I bought a galvanized fire ring from Tractor Supply and I’m using it for my newest raised garden. I’ll let you know if it works. It was $44 and I had a 15% off coupon so I thought I would try it. The wood gardens rot, the plastic ones break at the connections because of heat and weather, so I’m doing galvanized from now on. Weed eating can’t hurt it. Two weeks later I went back and bought another one. So far, it’s working. Winter gardening is so much more fun than summertime.
My New Year’s resolution was to quit all my bad habits. But then it occurred to me – no one likes a quitter.
The Community Foundation of Brazoria County is having their annual dinner for Philanthropists of the Year and will honor Mona Chavarria, Rod Hall and Lucilla Henderson for their participation and philanthropy. March 17th at 6:30pm and sponsored by BASF, Brazosport College, Freeport LNG and TDECU. In keeping with their philosophy of encouraging philanthropy, admission is free. If you can’t make it, then please be your own philanthropist and donate to a cause.
Thanks to modern technology and a little detective work, a nearly 400-year-old painting that had long been attributed to an unknown artist in Rembrandt’s workshop has now been found to be the real thing…a work of the Dutch master himself.
Harvey Weinstein, now known as inmate No. 3102000153, received 23 years in prison. He hired a prison consultant last month. What the heck does that do for you? Well, it seems that pretty bad things happen in prison to guys accused of sex crimes, especially ones with money. Weinstein hired Craig Rothfeld, a former Wall Street exec found guilty of securities fraud and spent time in prison. He cleverly turned his experience into a consulting business advising future inmates and their families about many issues that arise when you are locked up with a bunch of dangerous guys that don’t like you, but love your money. Bill Cosby has used his fame and time to mentor inmates (didn’t he drug women?) and to get in better shape. He entered prison at 220 pounds and is now a healthier 189 pounds, but Cosby was widely known, popular and funny. Weinstein was not well- liked and will need to learn not to argue, not to gamble and what to expect in the first 30 days. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.
“Some people never go crazy, what truly horrible lives they must live.” Charles Bukowski
Last year, an Oregon woman was arrested after she poured cognac into the mouth of a Taco Bell employee while she was in the drive thru. Huh? If you close your eyes and play that scene over in your mind, it just doesn’t work unless the employee ‘wanted’ Hennessy Cognac poured in his mouth, thereby sticking his head through the window and opening his mouth. I read a different article to see if I could get some clarification and it said that the employee told the sheriff’s deputy that most of the alcohol spilled on him, so he didn’t actually consume the Cognac. This all happened while a sheriff’s office sergeant was watching. Hmmm. I’m so happy that my thoughts don’t appear in bubbles over my head.
Hyundai Motors America and Kia America are instructing vehicle owners to park their vehicles outdoors (not in a home or business garage) until a recall repair can be performed. The companies will be notifying owners of certain Hyundai Elantra’s, Entourages and Santa Fe’s and some models of Kia Sedona’s and Sorrento’s by mail in April of a rare but dangerous defect discovered in 10 Hyundai Elantra’s that caught fire while parked and turned off. Many owners are wondering why it took the car companies so long to issue a recall.
Austin announced a state of disaster, then canceled SXSW. While they were insured, it appears that there’s a possibility that the policy may not apply to disease outbreak or local state of disasters. Interesting. Rice University, UCLA, Harvard, Ohio State, Purdue, Princeton and so many other colleges have canceled in-person classes and are now preparing to teach virtual classes. Italy began a country-wide lockdown. The city of Rochelle, NY closed their doors for 14 days and National Guard troops will deliver food and disinfect common areas. Wall Street – worst day since the financial crash of 2008. Note: We are beginning to see the domino effect of the virus. WHO has officially confirmed COVID-19 as pandemic. We can do this! Houston has opened a call center to answer all your COVID-19 questions. 832-393-4220. UTMB Health has launched a new web site of information www.utmb.edu/COVID-19.
The three hardest things to say are: 1. I was wrong. 2. I need help. 3. Worcestershire Sauce.
I had a dream that my hairdresser (that I’ve loved for 25-plus years) gave me a new haircut and it looked just like Alfalfa from The Little Rascals – you know, parted in the middle, slicked down with a clump sticking straight up in the air around the crown. A couple of days later, I had to cancel my appointment telling him (jokingly) it was because I hadn’t forgiven him for the haircut that he gave me in my dreams…my rescheduled appointment is this Friday, the 13th. I’ll let you know. 😊 If you want us to email you a copy of the paper each Thursday morning, just call the office. Lisa
