What I Heard This Week 07-20-2023

What I Heard This Week July 19, 2023

On Fridays or Saturdays, or Sundays, I clean the office. Normally when I vacuum, I bonk the tennis ball with the vacuum cleaner then Teller brings it back, drops it in front of me, and we do this over and over again.  We “work” for a bit, then stop, sit on the sofa, talk, or open mail, then we share a couple of fortune cookies that we have on hand for our customers. Teller just loves fortune cookies, and so do I. Today’s Fortune said: You will be successful someday. Hmmm. That was not as positive a fortune as I was expecting. Obviously, the fortune cookie knew that I was not vacuuming because I just love to vacuum, but because we have cut costs at my office. Yes, it’s still just $5 for place an ad, so I clean my own office. I’ll just have to stick that fortune on the refrigerator so it will remind me of all the good fortune that is still to come my way. 😊 You’ve heard of kissing a lot of frogs, well, we may have to eat a lot of fortune cookies. Hint: clean out a closet, call us, place an ad and have money in your pocket on Thursday… just saying.

“I keep asking, why the heck are we making chemicals that are never going to go away?” Linda Birnbaum, former director, National Institute for Environmental Health Science

Note: The reusable kitchen “paper” towels made out of cotton flannel that I told you about a couple of weeks ago, are quite nice and absorbent after you wash them the first time. I can use one towel all night. Sometimes I rinse it out, sometimes I just keep using it, then it goes straight into the washing machine to be washed with towels. I would say that it was a good practical buy and will save a slew of paper towels, and hundreds of trees in my future. Actually, I like them better than paper towels.

The political cartoon or strip, or whatever you call it that I found in the Houston Chronicle by Branch, shows a storekeeper wearing his apron with Texas flag emblem on the front, debit credit card machine nearby, and a driver’s license size ‘something’ in his hand that he is obviously looking at. At the same time, he is speaking to a young man wearing a backwards baseball cap, and assault-style rifle slung over his shoulder. The shopkeeper is questioning, “A pack of cigarettes?! But you’re only 18!!!”

Some Monday evenings after we close the office, I leave Teller here for a bit, and go shopping for groceries. Those are the short visits where I shop the outside aisles of the store but not the inside aisles. It saves time and I tend to overbuy otherwise. I’m typically not a big meat eater but uncured bacon was on sale. I added two delicious looking steaks, breakfast sausage and canned biscuits (because I had been craving sausage & biscuits); smoked turkey sandwich meat and sandwich cheese for lunches were all added to my basket of fruits and vegetables. HEB was super busy, so I helped bag my groceries, putting all the cold perishables into a plastic store sack, not one of my washable grocery sacks that I bring with me. I got home, prepared two slices of a fresh loaf of SEEDelicious bread with a layer of mayonnaise and mustard, then looked for the smoked turkey. Ahh. The cold sack had not been unloaded. I stepped outside to see if I had left it in the car. Nope. I called HEB to see if they had found it. Yes, but they had already put everything back on the shelves and it was closing time. No problem. I’ll come later and re-shop.  Plus, I knew I had a container of venison soup in the freezer that a friend had given me, and I needed to eat it. I opened up the recycled cottage cheese container that she had used to bring the soup to me, only to find that she had actually delivered a brand-new container of cottage cheese. Dinner preparations were not going well for me, so I just opened a can of sardines with crackers. Dinner of Champions.

If you have used and enjoyed the Texas Pie dough pucks that were sold at HEB, then please let them know that they need to bring them back. 979-299-0105. HEB kept moving the location at the store until we quit looking… now they are nowhere to be found. I enjoyed them so much because they don’t take up much space in the freezer and you don’t have to plan ahead when you need one… just take it out of the freezer, microwave for 30-45 seconds, rest for 2 minutes, then roll it out. It’s delicious, too. Please call and tell them to bring them back.

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Mary Engelbreit

Hatch Chili Season is coming… August and September. True Hatch chilies only come from the Hatch Valley in Hatch, New Mexico. It’s no different than Napa Valley for grapes, or Boston for beans 😊. It’s not near as serious as calling an ordinary sparkling wine, Champagne, but you get the picture. Let’s face it, most of us are sold on these chilis because they are so versatile and make foods sweet or savory, taste better and more interesting. Hatch chilis have even made their way into wine and cocktails. Yes, there is a Hatch chili wine – red or white, at HEB. I tried the red last year, and it was quite good. (Move over Pumpkin Pie Spice Latte 😊.) Some people even use Hatch chilis in their apple pies. I always buy my chilis roasted, scrape off the charring, chop and freeze for wintertime soups, meatloaf, dips, hummus, or on pizzas. So, I’m just warning you ahead of time. Get ready.

Swifties!Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” is Taylor Swift’s third of six re-records of her early music. It officially debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming her 12th album to reach the top spot. Taylor Swift now has more #1 albums than any other woman in history.

The first ever Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. They call them Hallmarkies, people that just love Hallmark movies. I started telling you about it last week. It sets sail November 5th – 9th, 2024, with bookings open to the public on July 21. 2023 (this week). Cabin space is limited, so don’t wait. There will be a Sail Ceremony, tree lighting, interactive activities with Hallmark Channel stars, cookie decorating, Christmas carol-oke, Christmas crafts, ugly sweater contest, wine tastings and more, all while sailing from Miami, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas. (Keepsake Christmas on the Hallmark Channel is still underway until July 27th, with Christmas at Dollywood, The Nine Lives of Christmas, Switched for Christmas, Christmas in Rome and so many more.)

As of this day, the National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Don is the only disturbance in the Atlantic, likely to hit cooler water around Sunday or Monday and go away.

Customers are calling the Girl Scout Thin Mint BITES, the best thing they’ve ever purchased from Costco. The cause of Lisa Marie Presley’s death was a small bowel obstruction, a complication of her bariatric surgery years before. Wels catfish are huge. An angler just caught a 9.4 foot one in Italy. He made the choice to not have the record catfish weighed because the stress could harm the fish. Instead, he released it. But I saw the picture. Yikes, it was huge. Jason Aldean ran off stage mid-performance after suffering a heat stroke in Connecticut. Well, was it a heat stroke or was it the heat from the radio stations pulling his song, “Try That in a Small Town.” They say the song promotes gun violence…he says it promotes a sense of community. Aspartame, a low-calorie sweetener (Nutrasweet, Equal) found in many popular diet or sugar-free drinks, sugar-free gum, gelatin, syrups and more, could be carcinogenic to humans, based on limited evidence that it could cause liver cancer.  If a store is sold out of an on sale advertised product, then just ask for a raincheck.

The Wireless Alliance is a company that recovers and recycles cell phones, smart phones, tablets, and other consumer recyclables. The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory collects these items for Wireless Alliance to keep them out of landfills as well as raise money for conservation efforts. If you have old technology such as a phone, charger, tablet, or other accessories, consider bringing it to GCBO or drop it off at The Source Weekly and we will make sure they get them!
GCBO is also in need of used tablets you no longer need as they move to electronic check-in and event transactions. They don’t have to be in perfect condition. Bring ‘em on.

Have you heard about the first Golden Bachelor, Gerry Turner, a 71-year-old retired restaurateur (now did he own a restaurant or was he a manager of a McDonald’s? hmmm), is from Indiana, a widower, a father of two daughters and two granddaughters, and is ready to find new love again. I have never, ever watched The Bachelor and had no intentions of doing so, BUT… I think I’m in. Unless of course, they put him with 25-year-old bimbos. Then I’m out. (My spellcheck says😊that this term may imply gender bias. Yes.)  This will be the first time since Golden Girls that they amuse us with mature adults.

This week my daughter Anne-Elisabeth celebrates her 24th birthday. It will be her first birthday where her momma didn’t celebrate with her, so I mailed the dress and shoes that I wore at her 4th birthday party which was a princess party. That year we made our living room into a castle, served little corn dogs and kid food from silver serving pieces, and danced. Everyone dressed up royally, even the parents of the kids. I had a little red carpet leading into the house with pink rose petals scattered about. It was so much fun for my little princess-obsessed 4-year-old, plus so much fun for this mom to plan and decorate for. This year in North Carolina, a friend is giving AE a grown-up Barbie party where all of Barbie’s successful friends will be dressed as Mermaid Barbie, Astronaut Barbie, Doctor Barbie or some promising, prosperous, or adored Barbie from their past. There will be no Hopeless Barbie there. I don’t know if Ken is going to show or not. I hope AE enjoys being Princess Barbie. The dress and shoes fit her perfectly. Happy Birthday Anne-Elisabeth. I love you and I miss you! I’ll be at home crying if you need me.

Have a great week and thanks for reading and shopping with The Source Weekly. We appreciate you.

😊 LISA

What I Heard This Week 07-13-2023

What I Heard This Week July 12, 2023

Texas passed a new law eliminating the use of temporary paper license plates in the state. It won’t go into effect anytime soon (July 1, 2025), but dealers will simply have to issue $10 metal plates to buyers purchasing cars. Temporary plates are easy to fake and often found on cars used to commit crimes. The Chronicle stated, a 2022 report estimated that “at least” 1.8 million cars in Texas are without real plates, and that a “tagdemic” of fraudulent paper tags had cost Harris county about $80 million in registration fees over the previous six years. Wouldn’t it be great if the plates were compostable or could be recycled for $$ like coke and milk bottles were back in the good old days.

3 in 4 people don’t regularly eat food high in probiotics which are important for a healthy gut, which in turn boosts our immune system, which then helps our entire bodies. Remember yogurt, kefir (fermented milk drink), pickles, kimchi (traditional Korean side dish consisting of salted and fermented vegetables, most commonly using napa cabbage or Korean radish), miso (fermented soybean paste – I buy it in a bottle and use it to flavor dishes – it’s delicious), and sauerkraut. Other foods that you need to incorporate in your diet are asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes (they’re not heavy in starch like potatoes but can be roasted, mashed and make a great potato substitute), bananas, oatmeal, red wine 😊 (I personally incorporate and experience this in a glass as I chop and cook), honey, maple syrup, and legumes (beans, soybeans, green beans, chickpeas, alfalfa, lentils, peas, & peanuts). If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live?

Larry Nassar, the disgraced former USA gymnastics team doctor convicted of state and federal charges for sexually assaulting underaged members of the USA gymnastics team and for possessing child pornography, has been stabbed in prison again, but is listed in stable condition. I hope it doesn’t hurt…much. A prominent Harvard business school professor who studies honesty was accused of falsifying data in a behavioral science study. In Florida, a man called the Python Cowboy along with his python-sniffing dog Otto, captured a 16-ft Burmese python that was ready to lay over 60 eggs. I’m glad I live in Texas.

22-year-old Rikkie Valerie Kolle has been named Miss Netherlands 2023, becoming the first transgender woman to take the title; now heading to the Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador later this year. Anne Chakrajutathib, a business tycoon who controls JKN Global Group Public Co. Ltd., is a celebrity in Thailand, has starred in reality shows and is outspoken about being a transgender woman, recently acquired the rights to the Miss Universe pageant.I don’t call Miss Universe a beauty pageant anymore,” she said.I call it a women’s empowerment competition.”

Trying to make protein shakes but they keep coming out as margaritas.

What heat dome? They’re still skiing in Colorado. Barbie officially opens on July 21, but the first public screening was recently held in LA. The reviews that I read were great, but critic reviews will come out closer to the 21st. Leslie Louise Van Houten also known by various aliases such as Louella AlexandriaLeslie Marie SankstonLinda Sue Owens and Lulu, a convicted murderer and former member of the Charles Manson Family, was released on parole after serving 53 years of a life sentence in relation to the 1969 killings of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. Some are not happy about this.

There is only one tropical disturbance in the Atlantic which shows a 50% chance of cyclone formation in the next seven days. It is more than 500 miles east-northeast of Bermuda. As it makes way north over cooler water, it should limit additional development according to the National Hurricane Center.

Country singer Johnny Lee is 77. Lookin’ for Love, One in a Million, Pickin’ Up Strangers, Save the Last Chance.

Oscar winning actor Alan Arkin died at 89. We all know what a fabulous actor he was but were you aware that in the 1950’s, Arkin won scholarships to many drama colleges but instead dropped out and formed a folk music band in 1955 called The Tarriers. One year later, they had a huge hit with their version of The Banana Boat Song. About that same time, Harry Belafonte recorded his version, Day-O, which was also a hit.

The Battleship of Texas is back in Galveston with a new exhibit to celebrate its legacy. July 1, until January 31, 2024, at the Galveston Railroad Museum, while the ship is undergoing renovations in the Galveston Ship Channel.

A very frantic and scared woman on an American Airlines flight leaving DFW caused hours of delay after she claimed that someone or something at the back of the plane was “not real,” urging everyone to get off the plane or die. Many on the plane were convinced that she actually saw something and was truly distressed. Now I’m reading that stand-up comedian and actor Scott Thompson, aka Carrot Top, was actually on that same flight. Hmmm. A United Airlines flight from Houston to Amsterdam made an unscheduled landing in Chicago because an unruly passenger in business class was livid over the fact his first choice of a meal was not available (and he could have been a little intoxicated.)

Clute has the Mosquito Festival, known far and wide for being a really clever reason for a festival (July 27 – 29, featuring Tilluride, Bluewater Highway, Profugos de Nuevo Leon, Secretto, Bri Bagwell, Josh Abbott Band and Bag of Donuts). Freeport just had their great Fishin’ Fiesta. While I was reading All Recipes magazine, I saw where downtown Pittsburgh has Picklesburg, a family friendly celebration of all things pickled July 21-23. Pickled food and drink, pickled-themed souvenirs, live music, and a pickle juice-drinking contest, along with a giant Heinz pickle balloon soaring overhead.  Clever, but they don’t have Bluewater Highway or Willie-Man-Chew. 😊

A New Jersey man has been fined after he had 32 trees, some as old as 150 years old, cut down from his neighbor’s property without a permit so he would have a better view of the Manhattan skyline. He has been fined $32,000 ($1000 per tree – big deal) so far, but an ordinance states that if a tree is illegally removed, the person who did the removal is obligated to replace it with another tree exactly like it or even a superior species. That’s hard. The site where the oaks, maples and birch trees lived would require a road, new soil, nurturing and watering the trees for two years, then cleanup (they left the fallen trees on the property.) Estimates for replanting the trees could be up to $1.5 million. The man also faces a trespassing charge because, well, it wasn’t his property.

Hope begins in the dark – the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. Anne Lamott

In my kitchen and bathrooms, I have had a fly problem lately. Connie told me to get something specific at Walmart, but obviously I wasn’t listening, and I bought something different called Terro Fruit Fly Traps that look like little plastic apples that you fill with something that smells like apple cider vinegar. But it only got rid of just three flies. So, the next time Connie was at the store, she went ahead and bought me the ($19.97) ZEVO Indoor Flying Insect Traps. It has a sticky strip and a blue UV light you plug into your light socket. It’s actually magic and quite nice looking. On the first day I had seven flies trapped, begging for me to unpeel them. I didn’t. It’s really good, just in case you have flies at your house… Thank you, Connie. When the sticky sheet gets full, then just pop in a refill cartridge. Now, if I can just get rid of the ants that came in with the last rain. It’s always something.

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door. Milton Berle

Former President Donald Trump posted what he claimed was the home address of former President Barack Obama. On the same day, a man who participated in the January 6, 2021 riot, was arrested near that property with guns found in his vehicle. Doesn’t Trump understand that’s why you take the mailing labels off the magazines before you give them away. 😊

The upgraded Brazosport CAER (Community Awareness and Emergency Awareness and Emergency Response) siren system will now run a test each Monday at noon in our county. The system has been upgraded to newer technology which will sound different and cover a broader area.

If you love cruises, Christmas and the Hallmark Channel, good news. Hallmark Channel announced TODAY its new Christmas Holiday Cruise, set for November 5-9, 2024, with rooms available for as little as $950 per person with two guests. More next week.

A former Air Force sergeant solicited 93 women before he found one who would enter into a special “sugar daddy (but no sex)” marriage, so that he could get Pentagon spousal housing payments while he was stationed overseas. Getting married wasn’t the worst part of his crime, he lied under oath that his bride was living in San Francisco, which meant a much higher stipend than her actual residence in Texas.

There is a song/album from 1979 called The Day the Earth Caught Fire, by City Boy. I don’t know why, perhaps because the Earth seems to be on fire lately, but I thought about it and listened to it this week. It’s a good rock group with a song that seems appropriate for us right now. …abandoned cars that lay too tired to drive away, A World in Flames Today was all the papers had to say, run for your life, The Earth’s caught fire, run, run, run… Thanks for reading this week. Don’t turn your AC too cool. Remember our sweet grid.

What I Heard This Week! 06-10-2021

What I Heard This Week June 10, 2021

Serendipity. Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you’ve found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for. Lawrence Block

The Source Weekly has some of the sweetest, kindest, most delightful customers and readers you can imagine. (In all honesty, there are also some real toots, impatient, belligerent, and demanding, but enough about them.) One of our more charming readers sent me this story, and I have her permission to share it, word for word, with you today. Enjoy.

“My husband and I have two pecan trees in our backyard. Last summer, on a clear, sunny day, one of the trees dropped a limb. A very large limb. There wasn’t bad weather, the limb wasn’t bug-infested, it just fell off. It missed the fence and all the power lines, so it did no damage. My husband got busy over the next few days cutting it up into firewood. Even had to buy a new chainsaw as the one he had wasn’t up to the job. He couldn’t have told you why he was so gung-ho to get it cut up, but he just felt he had to take care of it.

We haven’t used our fireplace for its intended purpose in many years, so a decision had to be made about what to do with all that wood. He decided he’d take it to his sister in San Antonio. His sister lives with their 93-year-old father, and our daughter lives there, as well. Then over the next several months, he made three trips, hauling that wood in our SUV. His sister joked about what she was going to do with all that wood. They hadn’t used their fireplace more than a few times the past several winters.

Then came the winter of 2021. The freezing temps hit them before we got it and they lost power in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. With it, they lost heat and the ability to cook. And suddenly, they were dependent on the fireplace for heat and the ability to prepare hot food. My father-in-law is in ill health and has dementia, and they considered taking him to a hospital to ride out the weather, but the roads were too icy to make the trip into town. Without the wood from our tree, who knows what they would have done.

Being 200 miles away and dealing with our own freezing weather and power outage, we would have been unable to help them in any way, but because our perfectly healthy tree dropped a perfectly healthy limb in the summer, giving us time to cut it up and move it to San Antonio, a bad situation was prevented from becoming tragic.

Serendipity? Perhaps, but I prefer to think, ‘the Lord moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform’.”
– Tharon Tanner

SerendipityYou don’t have to understand it, you just have to have faith.

An Arkansas man arrested and charged in connection with the Capitol attack, is offering to let you help him financially to support his legal fight. In exchange for sending him just $100 or more, Richard “Bigo” Barnett will send you an autographed picture of him sitting with his feet propped on Nancy Pelosi’s desk. In addition to smiling for the picture, he carried a stun gun into the Capitol and later showed off a piece of stolen mail to reporters. Hmmm. But it is unclear whether he can actually sell the photo of himself because it was taken by a photographer, and the companies that the news photographers work for actually control copyright to their work.

Internet Explorer debuted 26 years ago, in 1995, as part of Windows 95 and we loved it. At its peak in 2002, it had 95% of the browser market. Now it is about 5%, so Microsoft is officially getting rid of Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022. In the obit, Microsoft says it is slow, no longer practical for, or compatible with many modern web tasks and is far less secure than modern browsers. RIP. We sure enjoyed our time together.

Doogie Howser, M.D. Singer Gino Vannelli is 69.I loved the Black Cars album. Vannelli and his brother moved to LA in ‘72. Desperate and broke, they waited for hours in the parking lot outside A&M Studios, hoping to get a record deal. When Herb Alpert, the co-owner of A&M Records, finally emerged, Vannelli ran toward him, handing him a demo tape while being chased by security guards.  Alpert signed Vannelli and released their debut album, Crazy Life, in the summer of ‘73.

Clarence Williams III, best known as Linc Hayes on TV’s Mod Squad, and Prince’s father in the movie Purple Rain, died at 81 of colon cancer. Eric Carle, who illustrated more than 70 children’s books over his long career but was best known for 1969’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, died at 91. He was one of my children’s favorite from a very early age. Felix Silla, a trained circus performer best known for portraying tiny Addams Family member Cousin Itt, died at 84 of pancreatic cancer.

Mattel, home to the ever-so-famous Barbie, Matchbox and MEGA toys, needs your old toys. The 76-year-old toy company has launched a pilot program to recover and recycle materials in certain old toys and make them into future Mattel products, creating circular sustainability. You know, fun coming full circle. The toy take back program is called Mattel PlayBack and will enable families to extend the life of their Mattel toys once they are finished playing with them. To print out a free shipping label, visit Mattel.com/PlayBack. They will sort, separate, process, recycle or down cycle into other plastic products, or convert from waste to energy. CNN reported, “that of all the plastic ever created, only 9 percent has been recycled. The majority ends up in landfills or in the natural environment like the ocean, where they can take hundreds of years or longer to break down.” Unfortunately, plastic toys are no different. A recent study found that LEGO bricks, which are made of plastic, can survive up to 1,300 years in the ocean. In that time, they cause much harm to marine life and fragile ecosystems.

Food: Burger King is bringing back crown-shaped chicken nuggets after a 10-year absence, the latest nostalgia play in the fiercely competitive fast-food industry. Those must come from Sussex chickens.

My Harley-riding brother sent me this: Motorcycles are vital for survival. Dinosaurs didn’t have them and look how that turned out. I am still wondering how to respond.

Monarch sequoia trees can live up to 3,000 years, are fire-adapted, having survived dozens of fires in their lifetimes, but not any like this fire. It was really bad for our world. The 2020 Castle Fire was probably the most destructive fire in 700 years, destroying between 7,500 to 10,000 monarch sequoias, which is about 10% to 14% of the world’s entire mature giant sequoia population. The land looks like the surface of the moon in pictures I saw. Just dust. The redwood forests are so efficient in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, providing critical wildlife habitat, and watershed protection for farmers and communities. Makes you want to cry. Conditions in the park remain so dry that a sequoia tree was discovered still burning in a remote area of the forest last month.

Joanna Gaines says that when Chip dies, she will have the number 16 tattooed on her wrist in honor of her husband. Or maybe she will do a squirrel…she is so funny. No. 16 is his lucky number, and the name of the new men’s store at the Silos. The Silos is expanding from 2-acres to more than 5-acres, a full city block. They will have Magnolia Market, the Silos Baking Co., Magnolia Table restaurant, the Seed & Supply Garden store, and a food truck park. They will add the Magnolia Press coffee shop, a furniture showroom, a Wiffle ball field, a historic church that the couple relocated to the site, and a miniature village of six new themed shops carrying everything from leather goods to women’s clothing and children’s toys. Joanna says that the next project is the silos themselves and then she is finished with that area. The Silos? I like them just the rusty way they are. There is also a hotel makeover in the works. The launch of the TV channel will be pushed to January 2022 after extensive Covid-19 related production delays on its slate of new series. They are launching Magnolia app on July 15, 2021, that will offer the complete first seasons of Fixer Upper: Welcome Home and Magnolia Table, the complete Fixer Upper library, and complete seasons of new shows, including Growing Floret, The Lost Kitchen, Homegrown, Family Dinner and Restoration Road with Clint Harp. Oh, and their 16-year-old son Drake, got his driver’s license. Whew. Looks like they have been really busy.

Since reminding you of really good things never seems to happen enough, I will tell you again that seniors, age 65 and older, are eligible to receive a discount on their Lake Jackson water bill equal to 40% of the base water and sewer bill. There is a form available at the water department. Bring your driver’s license for verification. What a deal. Another little something to help us get excited about aging. Right.

A 37-year-old woman has been charged with a 2018 murder, after fatally poisoning her 62-year-old friend by filling her water bottle with six bottles of Visine. She also defrauded her of nearly $300,000 which she spent on gambling, expensive gifts, and spa treatments for friends and acquaintances. Now the suspect is saying that she actually helped the woman die by suicide. In 2020, a SC woman pleaded guilty after she gave her husband drinks laced with eye drops that she fed him over the course of three consecutive days. In 2019, a paramedic in NC, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after an autopsy determined his wife, Stacy, was poisoned by eye drops. Eye drops, more than something just to get the red out!

It is called Joints for Jabs and will run until July 12. Washington State will now allow adults, 21 and older, to have one free pre-rolled marijuana joint with their first or second vaccine shot. A Dutch court has ruled that Shell must step up its climate change effort and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030. Trump has reportedly been telling people that he is going to be President again in August. Hmmm. Coup? Mutiny? The Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug for Alzheimer’s disease, the first such approval the agency has made since 2003.After arresting a flower delivery driver for DUI on Mother’s Day, California police stepped up and finished delivering the remaining arrangements. They say they hoped they got all the flowers to their destinations on time, because everybody in the world’s got a mom.

Most everyone knows that the creator of Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hat was Halston. Now, Netflix is streaming a drama about the most important American couturier of the 70’s as he lost artistic control of his name, did drugs, and partied too much. But let me tell you, the fashion in this show is fabulous, and they show it off perfectly. It is definitely an adult watch that took weeks to finish because the only time I watch is while I cook, but worth it just to see his clothing and the process of building his fashion house.

Almost every day, I bring my lunch. Today I had a beautifully ripened avocado that dropped out of my purse and on the sidewalk, on the way into the office. So, now I am having guacamole for lunch with my salmon salad. 😊 I know it is going to be a good day because I found $40 when I put my skirt on this morning. Hmmm. I may even consider buying a lottery ticket. Have a great week and as always, thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to read us.

What I Heard This Week! March 21, 2019

What I Heard This Week March 20, 2019

This is super interesting, and I will try to explain it simply. On April 6th, 2019, your GPS may not work anymore. Globally, they may not work anymore. Think back to 1999 and the Y2K bug, except this could really happen. GPS stands for Global Positioning System and it’s a network of about 30 satellites orbiting the Earth. The system was originally developed by the US government for military navigation but now anyone with a GPS device, mobile phone or handheld GPS unit can receive the radio signals. Wherever you are in the world, at least four GPS satellites are visible to you at any time. Each one transmits information about its position and the current time at regular intervals. These signals are traveling at the speed of light and are intercepted by your GPS receiver which calculates how far away each satellite is, based on how long it took for the messages to arrive. Once it has received information from at least three satellites, your GPS can pinpoint your location. OK. There’s more. GPS signals from satellites include a timestamp, needed to calculate location, that stores the week number, so every 1,024 weeks or roughly every 20 years, the counter rolls over from 1,023 to zero. The first Saturday in April will mark the end of the 1,024th week. It will be the second time that the rollover has happened, the first being in 1999. Some fear that many things may be affected because over the past twenty years, more and more systems have integrated GPS into their operations. In April 2018 the US Department of Homeland Security issued a memo to make GPS users aware of the situation and strongly recommends owners and operators of critical infrastructure to prepare for the rollover. Hmmm. Drones, beware. If your GPS tells you to drive into the lake, don’t do it.

Someone just blasted down the street in front of my office in a big black truck and beeped their stupid airhorn that sounds like a train whistle. I’m a firm believer that they should be outlawed.

St. Patrick’s Day was Sunday. I came to the office for a little bit both Saturday and Sunday evening. Because it was St. Patrick’s Day week-end and because now we have so many bars, eating and drinking places in downtown LJ, I wasn’t too surprised to see guys in kilts, women in strange green costumes, men in strange green costumes, green striped leggings and a whole lot of celebration and rowdiness. All this for green beer.

Steve Martin –Boy, those French: they have a different word for everything!”

The first day of spring was the 20th. That means you can pick up your FREE package of flower or veggie seeds at our office when you place your $5 classified or FREE garage sale ad. That seems like a pretty good deal. So, let’s go over this…you need to find something to sell that is wasting away in your closet, garage, attic, kitchen cabinet -come place your ad and grab your seeds. When you sell your stuff, put the money in your pocket and in a few weeks your flowers will start blooming. It’s the gift that keeps on giving plus the bees and butterflies will love you for it.  😊

Steve Martin – “A day without SUNSHINE is like, you know…NIGHT.”

A woman never tells her age, but Barbie turns 60 this month. Barbie made her debut in 1959 and has had more than 200 careers. To celebrate this, Mattel is releasing the Pink Collection. I pulled up Proudly Pink Silkstone Barbie who has hot pink hair – just not my thing. I did read an article about the lady that designed Barbie’s clothes. Carol Spencer is now 86 years-old and has chronicled her journey in a new book called Dressing Barbie. She worked for several years as a fashion designer and illustrator in the apparel industry before beginning her career at Mattel as fashion designer for Barbie in 1963. Spencer said, “Times are changing and we’re all evolving, but I don’t think she was so out of proportion – people don’t understand doll scale. And she’s a doll! Part of Barbie will always be fantasy.” She also said that some of her favorites looks/outfits came from her own closet. If she was wearing it, then Barbie got an outfit just like it. My first Barbie was a red-headed pony-tail in a black/white stripe bathing suit. Wish I still had her, but I gave Barbie to a little neighbor girl when I was in high school, along with my barbie dream house and tons of clothes and furniture. I now encourage my own children to keep some of their toys for their own kids.

Seen on Facebook: Out of all my body parts, my eyeballs are in the best shape because I roll them like 342 times a day.

Recently, when the office microwave died, I brought the one from my house. I figured I could learn to live at my house without it. Both kids are away at school. How hard could it be. I even bought some small pots to heat up water for my morning pour-over coffee and a small skillet for leftovers. How hard could it be. Wait a sec, I already said that. Obviously, it’s hard for me. Did you know that reheating coffee and milk makes a huge mess when you leave it on low heat and go back to the bathroom to finish getting dressed? Yep. I did it twice. So, today, the Everyday Cheapskate in the Chronicle said to use automatic dishwashing detergent on the horrible, burned-on mess.(Guess I’m not the only one.) She said to fill the(in my case already destroyed) stainless steel pan, nonstick (ha), glass, porcelain or enameled cast iron with water and a detergent pod until the pod dissolves, then take a non-scratch scrub sponge and I quote, “wipe away the remains of the mess.”  I haven’t tried it but I’m sure that my burning days are not over. Do not use this on either cast iron or aluminum – neither is considered dishwasher-safe.

How do you decide which festival to go to?The Woodstock 50 Festival will take place August 16-18 in Watkins Glen, NY, about 115 miles NW of the original Woodstock site. Michael Lang, the producer and co-creator of the original Woodstock festival in 1969, is planning the festival to mark the 50th anniversary. The names of over 80 musicians or groups was just released, and it is unbelievable. A mix of old and new, but the list still needs more of the originals.

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts will hold a Woodstock 50th anniversary concert and festival on (you guessed it) August 16-18 on the site of the original Woodstock festival with Santana,Ringo Starr, Arlo Guthrie and Edgar Winter playing. Santana is listed at both festivals.Tickets $89 – $199.

Blue Water Highway is back in town on March 30th at 7:30 at The Clarion at Brazosport College. 979-230-3156. They’re the BEST!

Steve Martin – “I got a flue shot and now my chimney works perfectly.”

Recent Presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke says his campaign raised $6.1 million in its first 24 hours, beating all other Democratic candidates to date who have disclosed their first-day figures, so far. US Senator Bernie Sanders raised $5.9 million in his first 24 hours. Sanders’ campaign said over 225,000 individuals donated making their average donation $27. At this point I Googled ‘list of presidential candidates,’ and was very surprised at the numbers published by Ballotpedia. There are 208 Democratic candidates, 80 Republican candidates, 20 Libertarian candidates and 12 Green candidates who have filed with the FEC to run for president in 2020. They have a historical comparison chart of presidential candidates who filed with the FEC from 1980 to 2016.

It is believed that the 2020 election will be the one in which climate, flooded coastlines and global warming will finally be discussion questions. I sure hope so.

Igloo has issued a voluntary recall on various coolers after the father of a 5-year-old Florida boy shared a home surveillance video showing his son getting locked inside a cooler. The boy began playing inside, under the lid until he pushed the locking clip out and the lid locked. The child was a good screamer and his parents were able to find him quite quickly.

Mike Trout is signing a 12-year, $430 million contract to stay with the LA Angels, a new record for the largest contract in baseball history. They say he will go down in history with Willie Mays, Babe Ruth and others since he is the best player baseball has ever had.

“What’s Hoover got to do with it? Besides, I had a better year than he did.” – Babe Ruth, on being paid a higher salary than US President Herbert Hoover.

The creator of one of the most recognized brands of jelly beans, Jelly Belly, has founded a new company, Spectrum Confections, that has released a line of cannabis-infused sweets for candy lovers everywhere. David Klein started Jelly Belly in 1976. The new psychedelic treats are offered in 38 flavors and each recipe has been tested to ensure that the correct amount of cannabidiol (CBD) is added to each bean. Some vendors have been selling the beans for about $2 each. But sorry, according to their website the inventory is depleted at this time.

Have a great spring weekend. Thanks again for picking up The Source Weekly.

  • What I Heard This Week 10-26-2023

    by on October 25, 2023 - 0 Comments

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
