What I Heard This Week February 28, 2019

Rock guitarist Peter Frampton said that he is planning a new double album this summer AND he is going on tour “Peter Frampton Finale – The Farewell Tour” with about 50 dates across the country. Frampton, 68, said that he has a degenerative muscle disease called inclusion body myositis (IBM) that causes muscles to weaken over time and may slow his fingers and his ability to move around but should not affect his life expectancy.“In a year’s time, I might not be able to play. I want to record as much as I can in the shortest space of time.” “If I’m going to do a farewell tour, I want to play good, I want to rock it.”The Musicians Hall of Fame calls him “one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history.” Frampton told Rolling Stone that $1 from every ticket sale on the coming tour will go towards a fund he has started with Johns Hopkins University to research myositis.

C’est la vie. [(say lah vee)] An expression used to play down some minor disappointment: “So we lost a softball game by twenty-two runs. What can you do; c’est la vie.” From French, meaning “that’s life.”

Southwest Airlines experienced almost 600 flight delays nationwide after a glitch with computer software that normally downloads their flight plans. The disruption lasted about 50 minutes and resulted in delays averaging 40 minutes.

The estate of Michael Jackson has filed a lawsuit alleging that HBO is violating non-disparagement agreements it had made with the pop star before his death. They claim that HBO is engaging in “posthumous character assassination” of Jackson, who died in 2009. The estate is “seeking non-confidential arbitration and damages that it said could exceed $100 million.” The documentary is now scheduled to premiere in two installments on March 3 and 4.

An Amtrak train traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles was stranded for 36 hours on a snowy Oregon mountain with 183 passengers on board after snow and trees blocked their tracks. Amtrak decided to keep the passengers on the train, which still had electricity, heat and food, rather than find ways to get them to a nearby town which was having electricity and black-out problems because of the snow.

No matter how lovesick a woman is, she shouldn’t take the first pill that comes along. – Joyce Brothers

A woman traveling from Queensland, New Zealand to Scotland (9,300 miles), was surprised to find a non-venomous spotted python in her shoe as she unpacked her suitcase back at home. Thinking that her daughter and son-in-law had placed a fake snake in her shoe, she touched it…but then it moved. The woman had a friend come and help her unpack the rest of her bag, just in case.

Bumper Sticker: I was an Honor Student. I don’t know what happened.

As I know all of you have heard, that as of today, actor Jussie Smollett’s character on Empire will be removed from the final two episodes of this season. He was arrested on charges that he staged a racist, anti-gay attack on himself last month in Chicago. Police believe that he planned the hoax because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted to promote his career. Supposedly he was earning more than $100,000 per episode. That would make me sad, too. It is customary with a successful TV series to receive a boost in pay as part of contract extensions that follow the renewal of a second season. So, he would have been making even more money and now he has none.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Actor James Hong is 90. The 1957 New Adventures of Charlie Chan. Film and theatre composer Robert Lopez is 44. The Book of Mormon and Avenue Q, and for composing the songs featured in the Disney animated films Frozen and Coco. Actress Emily Blunt is 36.  Mary Poppins Returns. Now why in the world did they not get her to sing “The Place Where the Lost Things Go” at the Academy Awards? Why Bette Midler, who was wonderful, but not as wonderful as Emily Blunt.Just wondering…

Actress Drew Barrymore is 44.  Talk show host Jerry Springer is 75. Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. aka Prince Michael Jackson I is 22. Political commentator Glenn Beck is 55.Actor Conrad Janis is 91. Mindy’s father on Mork & Mindy.Actress Catherine Hickland is 63. Lindsay Rappaport on One Life to Live.Actress Kathleen Beller is 63. She was the dark-haired beauty, Kirby Anders on the prime-time soap opera Dynasty.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is 60. Commentators have described him as “the most powerful man in sports.”  Singer Lou Christie is 76. Lightnin’ Strikes. Actress Ann McCrea is 88. Midge Kelsey on The Donna Reed Show ’63-’66. Actors James and Oliver Phelps are 33. Twins, Fred and George Weasley in the Harry Potter series.

I would never get away with murder. My hair sheds everywhere.

A South Carolina man arrived home to find a woman opening his front door and saying, “Can I help you?” She was wearing his wife’s clothes, including her bedroom slippers and had moved his furniture. The woman’s children were running around, one with no pants on, they had eaten his food and bathed in his bathtub. The woman was transported to a hospital for evaluation and the children were placed in protective custody. An officer that responded said that the woman really believed that she lived there. I say, lock your doors.

Clark Gable II, the 30-year-old grandson of the Hollywood legend, was found dead in his Dallas home.

Did you play with Horny toads when you were little? I remember catching them in my Granddaddy’s yard in Waco and keeping them in a box with a bunch of St. Augustine grass and a bowl of water for the afternoon, after which we had to let them go. I have a fake one in my kitchen that has fooled many a dinner guest thinking it was real, just so when my kids were little, they would know what a Horny toad was. I so enjoyed having it there, so it has stayed thru the years. Ok. While we are on this subject…lighting bugs too. Pesticides have taken care of so many great things that our kids and grand kids will never get to experience.

Lake Jackson: this is a reminder that parking in a residential yard is prohibited unless on an all-weather surface. There are some short-term exceptions. State Law prohibits parking on or blocking sidewalks.

SPCA of Brazoria County Wish List: SPCA still needs donations of paper towels, canned Pâté dog food, Yesterday’s News kitty litter, Purina Kitten Chow, 13-gallon trash bags, dish soap, canned Pâté kitten food, copy paper, liquid laundry soap, and laminate sheets.

Bumper Sticker: Buckle Up. It makes it harder for the aliens to suck you out of your car.

The new national debt has passed a milestone. Our great United States has now topped $22 TRILLION. Two years ago, it stood at $19.95 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office forecasts that the deficit will keep rising, top $1 trillion annually beginning in 2022 and never drop below $1 trillion through 2029, unless we do something to decrease our over-spending. Hmmm.

Truth has no special time of its own. Its hour is now – always.

Academy Awards: First off, I liked the ‘No Host’ idea. Otherwise, it’s just too scripted and long winded. There were some lovely gowns, but then there were some that looked like sheets of rubber. Ugly. The hot pink dress that Julia Roberts wore at the end with the closing remarks was fabulous and no one has really mentioned it. The foo-foo pink thing that Kacey Musgraves had on looked like a bunch of cotton candy. In fact, there were a couple of cotton candy dresses.Serena Williams looked really good and so did Jennifer Lopez in her mirrored dress. Otherwise, just too many bows and ruffles for me.  I loved Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga singing the sexy ‘Shallow’ song.Someone said that it wasn’t right because Bradley’s girlfriend was in the audience. Oh, please. She is a big girl. Olivia Colman won best actress for her performance in The Favourite. Her acceptance speech was hysterical. I don’t know much about her, but she was so funny.Melissa McCarthy presented the award for Best Costume Design and wore the cutest, craziest rabbit dress with a train and rabbit puppet. I laughed so hard. Billy Porter wore a tuxedo ball gown – top half was a tux and the bottom half was a full ball gown. It was definitely different. Nice evening.

Now that I think about it, I wasn’t paying that much attention to The Oscars because I was cleaning my kitchen tile grout lines with my new handheld re-chargeable Dremel Scrub Brush. It looks like an oversized computer mouse. Now, this is something to get excited about. Santa brought it for me, and I had never opened it (which took forever because of the very tough clam-shell covering but that story is for another time). I had picked up some Goo Gone Grout and Tile spray and I went to town on a 10’x 2’ floor area. I felt like Tom Sawyer whitewashing the fence except I didn’t want to give it up to anyone else. This little gadget works and it’s fun. When I finish the kitchen, I’m working on some rusty wrought iron and then the gas grill. In addition to the brush attachment, it has three different scrubber pads – extra fine to coarse. Oh, and did I mention that it is water-resistant so you can take it into the shower with you. It takes so little to make me happy.

You know the green container of parmesan cheese that everyone buys and keeps in their pantry? One of the ingredients is powdered cellulose which is wood pulp used as a filler and non-caking ingredient. Always check your ingredients. Our rule with my kids growing up was, if it has more than 5-6 ingredients, we don’t need it. Or if you can’t pronounce the ingredients, put it back on the shelf.

What a great article about Beaver Aplin in Texas Monthly. Great pictures too. Don’t forget to read it.

Since it’s Mardi Gras time I was looking for an easy King Cake recipe. This one is super easy. Put 2 cans of jumbo cinnamon rolls in a greased Bundt or tube pan. Squeeze them in there. Bake for 25-30 minutes at 350 until the rolls are no longer gooey. Turn out on a platter to cool, mix the prepared icing packets with 2 oz. of room temperature cream cheese then ice while still warm. Once it is cooled, decorate with purple, yellow and green sugar crystals. Before you ice it, you can cut a space in the side of the cake and put in the little plastic baby. Decorate with beads and coin. You’ll look like a genius.

Thanks for taking the time to read this today. Happy Birthday, Tom. We love you.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
