What I Heard This Week 07-14-2022

What I Heard This Week July 13, 2022

Our cars are getting so hot inside right now. In triple digit heat your car’s interior will get to over 160 degrees. Cracking a window just a bit doesn’t let in any rain (hah, rain) but will allow some hot air to escape. Have you ever left a bottle of water in your car during the heat of the day? Well, you need to quit doing that. Leaving water bottles in your car during summer is a bad idea, and not just because chemicals from the plastic can leach into your water when it gets hot (which is very disturbing if you ask me), but plastic leaches its component chemicals into the water much faster when heat is applied. (Is there AC on the 18-wheeler delivering the pallets of water to stores? NO.)  It was described much like being when you put mint leaves in your tea. The heat extracts the mint-tasting molecules faster in hot tea than it does in cold tea. I like it when they put information in real life terms that we can understand.

A plastic bottle of water can also set your car seat on fire if sunlight hits it at just the right angle. If the conditions are right on a hot sunny day, light can shine through the front windshield, through a full water bottle, focusing heat onto one point. That concentrated beam can exceed 400 degrees onto a darker surface within seconds.

Now, back to my original point about hot cars. A few weeks back I had a doctor’s appointment because of all the beautiful sunshine that I enjoyed when I was younger – water skiing, camping, scuba, gardening, tanning beds, etc. – is now claiming bits and pieces of my skin for its very own. This was my third basal cell; they removed it from my ear, then took tissue/skin from the side of my face and placed it on my ear. Except for the fact that I couldn’t get the areas wet for a couple of weeks, it was pretty simple. Anne-Elisabeth was sweet to wash my hair at the kitchen sink. But at this rate, I may look like a completely different woman by the time I’m 80, with so much skin swap. (You know the pictures I’m talking about.) So, on the way back to LJ from the surgery, I figured I might as well treat myself to a quick trip to Total Wine since it was on my way home. I picked up 6 bottles of my “favorite at the moment” summertime Pinot Grigio. The next day when I got ready to leave the house, I remembered that box of wine in the backseat of my car. Yikes. It got so hot in my car that the corks had popped up on three of the bottles. This is serious. It’s so hot outside, it’s affecting our wine.

Her Majesty, the Queen has a new shorter hairstyle this summer. The very famous Butter Cow statue at the Iowa State Fair (August 11 – 21) in Des Moines, will weigh over 600 pounds. Ohio State University won trademark for the word THE, always said with emphasis such as, THE Ohio State University. To you and me, it’s just another everyday word, but to Buckeye fans, it’s a beloved tradition. There has been a third case of remission after a stem cell transplant using umbilical cord blood on an HIV patient. The Nord Stream 1 pipeline from Russia to Germany began a temporary suspension for maintenance, but now some fear Russia will not turn the supply back on.  A 23-year-old American tourist fell into Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano in Italy, after trespassing to take a selfie, then dropping his phone and trying to retrieve it. He was saved by park officials. French health authorities say they have confirmed a link between nitrates added to processed meats and colon cancer.  Good-bye charcuterie trays. Nitrates are added to a range of food products to improve their shelf life and flavor, and to help give pork-based products their pink hue. Beto O’Rourke will be visiting Lake Jackson on Wednesday August 3rd at noon.

Are you worried about your pet choking on a dog treat or rawhide? Well, a Florida family woke up to find that their Lab puppy, Scout, had found a potato chip bag that he put his head into, and it created a vacuum seal as he inhaled, suffocating him. Evidently it happens often, especially with pet treat bags, cereal box liners, bread bags and other plastic bags. So, before you recycle or dispose of the bags into the trash, cut along one side. Store pet food in plastic containers with an opening smaller that the pet’s head and serve snacks in bowls rather than straight from the bag. Hmmm. Can you imagine!

Larry Storch, the funny Cpl. Agarn in the 1960’s Western spoof, died at 99. Although F Troop lasted only two seasons from 1965 to 1967, it became a cult favorite in reruns. Devoted fans could recite almost all of the adventures of the incredibly incompetent soldiers of Fort Courage and the members of the nearby Native American tribe who only pretended to be at war with them. Monty Norman, the composer who wrote the iconic theme for the James Bond films, died at 94. James Caan died at 82.  His Oscar-nominated performance as Sonny Corleone, the recklessly hotheaded son of Marlon Brando’s Mafia Don in The Godfather, is sure to be remembered as long as there are gangster movies. Sonny’s violent end, being riddled with dozens of bullets, is one of the most memorable scenes in the film. He died well. Caan also had notable roles in films including Misery, Elf, Thief, Godfather Part II, Brian’s Song, and The Gambler.

The iconic James Coney Island at the corner of Shepherd and Richmond in Houston closed recently. “We bought a lot of real estate 25 years ago when we started expanding Coney Island. They’re worth a lot of money today,” JCI President Darrin Straughan said. “The unit economics is too much to sell hot dogs out of. We made a decision to start selling off our real estate. We’re going to open Coney Islands in smaller footprints with drive-thru’s.” Ahhh. So, it’s called unit economics when your property is worth more than you can make selling your product.

Elon Musk is pulling out of his $44 billion agreement to buy Twitter, so Twitter is in a bad situation of going to court to try and force the billionaire to make the purchase. His offer was for $54.20 a share, Twitter stock fell 11% to around $33 a share, losing value since late April when Musk made his offer. If he walks away, he could be on the hook for a $1 billion breakup fee. Like they were engaged and now Twitter wants to keep the engagement ring.

Pringles is asking all chip fans to sign a petition to rename the Kidney Garden Spider (that looks like it’s sporting a mustache, just like the Pringles “Mr. P” logo) to the Pringle’s Spider. The chip company also has a program that allows people to adopt a Pringles Spider. You get official adoption certification once you adopt, but you don’t actually get sent a real spider, obviously. Wake up guys. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade, women are now asking more of men concerning shared sexual responsibility. Like being equals. What a cool idea. Men, if you are finished having kids: get a vasectomy as soon as you can. For young men, many are saying that the best birth control plan is to harvest the youngest and best swimmers as early as possible, put them in a freezer under lock and key, then get a vasectomy. The end. No unwanted pregnancies, no abortion, fewer deadbeat dads. Then the only thing you would have to worry about is venereal disease and men lying about having had a vasectomy… but no babies. Well, it’s not free, but neither is labor and delivery, food, clothing, and college.

Brandy Bottone, 32-year-old Plano mom, said she could not be one minute late to pick up her son, so she made the decision and took to the HOV lane on Dallas North Tollway. You remember the lane reserved for buses or vehicles with several occupants, typically marked with large diamond shapes on the pavement.  When you drive in the HOV lane, you have to have more than one person in the vehicle. Brandy was 8-months pregnant, so when the officer pulled her over, she pointed to her very pregnant belly and told him that the baby in her belly now counts as a person. She said the stand she’s now taking on the ticket isn’t for or against abortion, but that the law should be uniform. “If there’s a pro-women category, that’s my stance,” she said. “One law is saying that this is a baby and now he’s telling me this baby that’s jabbing my ribs is not a baby,” said Bottone. “Why can’t it all make sense?” Yes, indeed.

This could be your opportunity to own a 76-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton when Sotheby’s auction house offers a Gorgosaurus skeleton on July 28, (which also happens to be Geek Week.) This boney fellow is almost 10 feet tall and 22 feet long. Plenty of dinosaur skeletons have been auctioned off in the past, including Stan the T. Rex, which sold for $31.8 million in 2020; a meat-eating Allosaurus which sold for $2.36 million in 2018; and Sue the T. Rex, which sold for $8.4 million in 1997 to the Field Museum of Natural History. Experts are saying that this guy could bring up to $8 million. Paleontologists say individuals owning fossils rather than public institutions, prevents them from being viewed by the public and studied by researchers. Tina says that if she had one at her house, all the neighborhood dogs would be too scared to continue pooping in her yard.

The invasive giant African land snails are back in Florida. If you haven’t seen a picture of one, you need to. They can grow up to eight inches and can consume at least 500 plant species, but if they can’t find enough vegetation to munch on, they can also eat the paint or stucco off your house. The first battle Florida had with destructive mollusks was in the late 1960’s when 17,000 of the pests were collected over a 7-year period at a cost of $1 million, then they were found again in 2011 and 2017. In the past two weeks, 1,016 of the destructive mollusks have been collected from 29 properties. They also spread meningitisJust when you thought it was safe to come out at night. I always use a jar lid full of beer to get rid of the snails in my garden. You would have to put out a kiddy pool full of 6-packs or kegs for these guys. Follow me next week for an Easy Garlic Escargot recipe. 😊

In southwest Virginia, Linda Skeens won quite a few ribbons at the county fair. In fact, she won first, second and third place for best cookies, and all three awards for candy, and savory bread, cake, pie, brownies, sweet bread and best overall baked good (which was strawberry fudge.) Wait, there is more. She also won for canned tomatoes, canned corn, pickled peppers, sauerkraut, relish, spaghetti sauce and both jelly and jam. Then she took top honors in quilt embroidery. People compared her to a great athlete, like NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt.  She said, “Comparing me to Dale Earnhardt, Sr., I said no way I could ever be in his category. He’s my hero.”  I believe she was being very humble. Especially after I read that last year at a different county fair, she won 40 ribbons. Sounds like a best-selling cookbook to me! Don’t forget to do something nice for someone TODAY. Thanks for taking the time to visit us.

What I Heard This Week 11-18-2021

What I Heard This Week November 17, 2021

A woman was asked by officials at the Antwerp Zoo to please change her behavior when she visits a 38-year-old Chimpanzee named Chita. The woman claims she is having a real relationship with Chita and compares it to an affair. Chita had been kept as a pet but 30 years ago, he was given to the zoo when his owners found his behavior unmanageable. He has had ongoing issues being able to integrate into the zoo’s chimpanzee troupe. The zoo said, “When Chita is constantly surrounded by visitors, the other animals ignore him and don’t consider him part of the group.” But the woman insists she is in love with the chimp and said, “I haven’t got anything else. Why do they want to take this away from me?” Hmmm.
I guess Cole Porter said it best:
THE chimpanzees in the zoos do it,
Some courageous kangaroos do it,
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
I’m sure giraffes on the sly do it,
Even eagles as they fly do it,
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.

The DFW International Airport passenger that struck and verbally abused an American Airlines flight attendant (after becoming upset because her seat did not recline) has been fined $23,000 by the FAA. The woman also refused to comply with federal face mask requirements. The FAA has already received more than 5,000 complaints of unruly passengers this year alone, including 100 acts of violence against flight crews. And this is happening without alcohol. On a happier note, United Airlines announced that the company will begin serving hard liquor on flights of at least 301 miles after halting this service for Covid. Well, I am speechless. Imagine alcohol-induced UNRULY behavior on LONG flights.

Tiger King star Joe Exotic aka Joseph Maldonado has reported from prison that he has an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Idaho has reported the first human to die from rabies since 1978. New Jersey joined California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, and Virginia, all states with similar bans on the sale of cosmetics that are tested on animals. More interest in cruelty-free products.  Beto O’Rourke is running for Governor of Texas and believes he can beat Greg Abbott.

READ THIS: The full moon on November 19th is the Full Beaver moon. According to Farmers’ Almanac, this was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. There will also be a near-total lunar eclipse of about three and a half hours long at the same time the full moon reaches peak illumination – the longest lunar eclipse of the century and the first of this length in 580 years. You will be able to start seeing it around midnight with the maximum around 3am. Everyone in North America will be able to see it. Time for lunar eclipse party.

China and the US have issued a surprise joint pledge to work together to slow climate change in the next decade. China and the US are also the world’s two largest emitters. I always tell you about climate change because it is for you, for my family, your family, and for everything we love. I know everyone doesn’t believe that there is a problem, but if we can change the mind of just one person.

A Massachusetts funeral home is being sued after one of the side straps on the casket lowering device broke, causing the casket to fall into the grave and break open. The corpse of their loved one fell out, and it would seem embalming fluid was evident. The family is alleging negligence and reckless infliction of emotional distress and seeking $50,000 in damages.

Bassist John McVie of Fleetwood Mac is 76. TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy is 66.

Singer Jesse Colin Young of The Youngbloods is 80. He and his daughter, Jazzie Young, just released a new single and music video, “Trouble.” The father/daughter duo is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the movie, Harold and Maude, with their rendition of the Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) soundtrack hit. That brings a smile to my face because that movie was a favorite of mine, and my friend Terrie in high school. Such a long time ago, but it seems like yesterday. She and I would walk the neighborhood in our bell bottom jeans that were too long dragging the ground, all the while dissecting that movie. We were such intellects at 15.

If you are a grandparent looking for a perfect Christmas or birthday gift, then I can recommend this with all my heart. My two children attended Kindermusik classes from the time they were about 8 months old, still sitting in my lap, until they were about 4 or 5. I still have all their musical instruments in a basket here at my office. It was such a fun time, and the truth is, music is math. Many math problems require complex thinking and music strengthens that part of the brain. The Kindermusik website says, Kindermusik is the world’s leading provider of music-based education for children from birth through age seven. We use the power and joy of music-making to help children learn and grow during the years most critical to brain development. Since 1978, Kindermusik has helped millions of children around the world build a strong foundation for a lifetime love of learning. For local classes, go to pandatree.kindermusik.com.

If the above doesn’t interest you, then there is always the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ultimate Party Wagon vehicle, 20-inches long, 14-inches tall, and 12-inches wide. Indeed, it’s big enough to transport six of your 7-inch scale action figures. It has removable pizza-rims, boombox, radar dish, plus a winch and tow hook. Only $449.99, for a January delivery. I would tell you more, but really…  haven’t you already lost interest? Remember, you only have about a month left to shop.

Men argue. Nature acts.”- Voltaire in 1764. Four words with such powerful meaning.

The first Lethal Weapon movie came out in 1987 with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound. Number 2 released in 1989 and Joe Pesci was added to the cast. Number 3, with Rene Russo, was the most financially successful, following with Number 4 in 1998 with Chris Rock. Director Richard Donner was responsible for all four films but gave his blessing to Mel Gibson before his death in July, to direct the fifth Lethal Weapon. Fun fact: Carrie Fisher was actually hired as a script doctor for Lethal Weapon 3.

It was time for some new cooking extracts, and I order mine from a company called OliveNation. A few years ago, I made homemade vanilla extract for all my Christmas gifts. I ordered the correct brown bottles that you are supposed to use so light does not harm the vanilla, and I used 6-8 Madagascar vanilla beans in each bottle, along with either rum, bourbon, or vodka. I even take my spent beans, dry them well, then make vanilla sugar in the blender. So, as I was ordering my orange oil and maple extract, I thought to myself… this might be the year to make extract again for everyone. Well, on second thought, probably not this year! One single Madagascar vanilla bean is now priced at $6.99 before tax. One little skinny bean. I normally order a pound and that now costs $282.99. Nah. I will just send cards.

Why was a little boy there?!? The 9th and 10th victims of Travis Scott’s disastrous Astroworld music festival tragedy have died. The latest was the 9-year-old boy that was trampled to death. The medical company hired for the evening (crew of 70 medical personnel, which in my opinion, should have been enough) tried desperately to save the lives of fans, but had the huge task of treating eleven people who were all in cardiac arrest at the same time. Rapper Drake, served as a special guest that evening. In one lawsuit he is accused along with Travis Scott, of inciting the crowd into actions that left the concert-goers severely injured. One story, along with pictures, said that after Drake left Astroworld that evening, he hosted an after-party at Dave and Busters, then spent $1 million dollars at a Houston strip club. Hmmm. He must have really been torn up about the events of the evening.

I may act like I’m OK… but deep down inside, I sure do miss Hastings.

An Oklahoma City woman recorded a video of her fellow church members telling her to leave and threatening to call the police after accusing her of bringing marijuana into the church. She explains that it is actually cilantro, meant as a garnish for menudo, the Mexican soup that she had brought to share with them. She says, “Smell it, I promise you.” This would never have happened in Texas.

I was called pretty today. Well, actually the full sentence was you’re pretty annoying. But I only focus on the positive.

On Saturday morning, I made myself a list of things I needed to accomplish before the day was over. Carwash, vacuum office, dogfood, and Lowe’s to see if anything new had come into garden. Note that there is nothing yet in the garden section. I also needed a new shower head with removable handheld, so I can bathe the dog without killing my back now that it’s too cold to bathe him in the driveway. While I was studying the top ten shower heads on my phone, I met a sweet lady named Pearl from Van Vleck on the shower head isle. We started talking… and it is best that we don’t live next door to each other because we would never get anything else done. I sure enjoyed our conversation. Waterpik won, then as I unpacked the box last night, I realized that although described as chrome, it is actually silver covered plastic. This one may have to go back to the store.

The Harry Potter cast will reunite for a 20th anniversary TV special “Return to Hogwarts” reunion on HBO Max, New Year’s Day. But no J.K. Rowling mentioned. This is just one of several Harry Potter 20th anniversary events planned by Warner Bros. Houston Zoo Lights is happening. You know you will love it! On March 18th, 2022, there will be a new Downton Abbey movie called A New Era. It would seem that Maggie Smith inherits a villa from a former love, Tom Branson finds happiness with maid Lucy Smith, and Daisy marries. I cannot wait. Thanks for taking the time to read and shop The Source Weekly this week. We appreciate you so much.

What I Heard This Week! 05-02-2019

What I Heard This Week May 1, 2019

At the Source Weekly, we have a carrier that has spent a dedicated twenty-years with us. He only missed delivering his papers a couple of times in those twenty-years, but now he is unable to deliver, so I have been doing his route for the past few months. It really messes up my working schedule because when I miss a day of my regular work chores, Imust make it up somewhere else in the week. But, before you start thinking that I’m whining (well, maybe I was whining just a little,) I want you to know that while delivering papers, I have met some of the nicest people in Brazoria County (the route starts in LJ, goes to Brazoria, Sargent then back to Churchill)and I have heard some wonderful stories. Stories about the carrier they had for the past twenty years. How he would bring back dry papers when it rained, conversations about his kindness and inquiries about his health.  (Thank you,Mr. Boyd for your phone call.)Don’t you hope that someone misses you when you ‘give up your route’? I have also heard such nice tales of life. (Thank you,Mr. Little.)A couple of weeks ago, I met Gene, Richard and Buck at the Diamond S in Brazoria. I asked them a little bit about themselves; they laughed, and said they meet everydaytosolve theproblems of the world. They even shared homemade muffins with me. I left there that morning thinking to myself, “I just ate food that a stranger gave me. My mother would not understand.” Then I remembered that I was in Brazoria, Texas, where there are no strangers. Some days are just more special than others. Ms. Tina has come to work with us and was kind enough to take over thedelivery route. You’re going to love her.(Thank you,Mr. Moses for lovely conversation each week.)

On the other hand: What I didn’t tell you is that there are also some real #%#’$ in the world. As I delivered the papers, I had some people treat me like I was dirt under their feet. I told one guy that his ‘Closed, Be Back in the Morning’ sign was still out on his front door and he replied, “Well, you can switch it around on your way out.” There was no thank you. No nothing. He was too busy to look up from his cellphone. I just wonder if anyone will miss him when he ‘gives up his route’ in life.

While we are on this subject, while delivering the papers I wandered around. I purchased yard eggs from one gentleman. Our county has a lot to offer, likeReifel’s Feed Store in Brazoriawhere they have chickens, chicken coops and a great selection of vegetable starter plants. Wonderful variety. I have been gardening for quite a few years, but there were peppers I had never heard of, so many varieties of tomatoes and three different kinds of lavender. If you garden, then take a few extra minutes and drive to Brazoria. It’s just a bitfurther down the road and a nice drive. Be sure to stop at The Depot and The Rustic Rose for a little bit of shopping and if happen to need a copy of The Source Weekly while you are there, we drop 650 copies at Stewart’s Grocery each week.

Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility of the future. John F. Kennedy

Four years ago, a man dropped his 5-year-old daughter off a bridge to her death. His lawyers argued that he was insane, but a jury deliberated for only seven hours before finding the man guilty of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to life in prison. It was believed that he did this because he wanted to keep his daughter away from her mother and grandmother. Hmmm.

In Ohio, an unruly customerlaid down in a restaurant booth, then threw a menu at the waitress.  As the manager approached, he pulled a 2-ft. long iguana from under his shirt, swung it aroundthen threw it at the manager. It missed but landed on the floor where the suspect picked it up and left. Police were called and the suspect was apprehended a few blocks away. The lizard suffered a broken leg. Sigh.

Dan Robbins, an artist who created the first paint-by-numbers pictures and helped turn the kits into an American sensation during the 1950s, died at 93. He was working at Palmer Paint, a company in Ohio selling children’s paint sets, when his boss asked him to do an adultpaint kit. He had read that da Vinci used numbered background patterns in his work, so he based his idea on that. Most of the kits were landscapes but included other designs such as ballerinas and kittens. The kits were a sensation in the mid-1950’s but competitors saturated the market and sales greatly decreased. Robbins continued his career in product development, designing happy meal toys for McDonalds. Early on, his paint-by-number works were dismissed by some critics but later celebrated by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

Georgia Engel, an actress best-known for playing Georgette Franklin Baxter on the ground-breaking sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show died at 70.  She was nominated twice for Emmys for her portrayal of Mary’s sweetly simple friend Georgette, who married the pompous anchorman Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight. Other notable roles included Pat MacDougall on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” for which she was nominated for another three Emmy awards. Her last recurring role was alongside fellow “Mary Tyler Moore Show” alum Betty White in “Hot in Cleveland.”

According to NPR, 4 in 5 parents want schools to teach climate change, but most classrooms do not teach currently. I’ve got it! Teach them at home by the way you live. 1.)  Switch off lights. 2.)  Switch to LED’s.  3.)  Set your computer to turn off when not in use and tone down your brightness. 4).  Do full loads of clothes. 5.)  Carpool. 6.)  Try renewable energy by switching your utility company or solar panels. 7.)  Programmable thermostats. 8.)  Conserve water. 9.)  Eat less meat and more veggies. 10.)  Always avoid processed foods. 11.)  Eat organic whenever possible. 12.)  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle 13.)  Stop junk mail. If you live in U.S., you can register with DirectMail to get your name removed from lists used by the industry. 14.)  Put your car up and walk. 15.)  Fuel efficient vehicles. 16.)  Get the people around you involved. Yes, some of these are small things but if everyone did one…it wouldn’t be small.

The new HISD principal at James Madison High School, Carlotta Outley Brown, will turn away parents if they do not abide by the new “Dress Code.” She said, “Parents, we do value you as a partner in your child’s education. However, please know we have to have standards, most of all we must have high standards.” I read the print-out she wrote and pulled this information…”no satin caps, bonnets or shower caps, no pajamas, no hair rollers, no jeans torn from the buttocks, no leggings that show your front or behind, no very low cut tops showing your breasts, no sagging pants, shorts, or jeans, no undershirts on men, no short shorts, no Daisy Dukes or low rider shorts, and no dresses up to your behind.” So far, Ms. Brown (who also happens to be a graduate of Madison High School) has received support from some, but a parent said, “The guidelines codify deeper issues tied to race, class and gender.”  I say go for it; every school should have dress codes for the parents. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to sit next to parents that should never have been allowed on school property. I was not only embarrassed for them but far more embarrassed for their children. As adults, we need to set better examples in life if we expect to see change. Especially for our children. In Tennessee, state officials have sponsored a bill that would require all schools to adopt a parent code of conduct, which would include how parents dress. They said, “What could be a higher priority than bringing your child to school? You wouldn’t go to a date like that.

I hate this. Someone stacked and burned several bee hives at the Brazoria County Beekeepers Association bee farm in Alvin, and may have killed as many as 600,000 honey bees. Anyone with information about this crime can call the Brazoria County Sheriff’s at 979-849-2441 or to remain anonymous, contact Brazoria County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-460-2222 or Brazoria-CountyCrimeStoppers.com. Remember, the more details that you give them, the faster they can make an arrest and the better your chances are of receiving a reward! And in addition, The Beekeepers Association is now offering $1,000 reward for information. Spread the word. People need to be held accountable to the full extent of the law for stupidity, brainlessness, hatred and pure evilness.  What exactly did the bees do to them. We need our bees. Without them to pollinate, we won’t have food.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.” Albert Einstein.

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke announced, from a beautiful location in Yosemite National Park, a move he hopes will make a difference. O’Rourke promised to sign climate change-fighting executive orders on the first day of his presidency, including rejoining the 2016 Paris Agreement, which the US has withdrawn from. According to the United Nations, “The Paris Agreement…  brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with enhanced support to assist developing countries to do so. As such, it charts a new course in the global climate effort. The Paris Agreement central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”

If you are reading this on May 2, then it is National Day of Prayer where Americans are encouraged to give thanks and turn to prayer and peaceful meditation. Pause for a moment. Our world needs it. If it’s not May 2, then you could do it anyway. Just a thought. Lisa

What I Heard This Week! March 21, 2019

What I Heard This Week March 20, 2019

This is super interesting, and I will try to explain it simply. On April 6th, 2019, your GPS may not work anymore. Globally, they may not work anymore. Think back to 1999 and the Y2K bug, except this could really happen. GPS stands for Global Positioning System and it’s a network of about 30 satellites orbiting the Earth. The system was originally developed by the US government for military navigation but now anyone with a GPS device, mobile phone or handheld GPS unit can receive the radio signals. Wherever you are in the world, at least four GPS satellites are visible to you at any time. Each one transmits information about its position and the current time at regular intervals. These signals are traveling at the speed of light and are intercepted by your GPS receiver which calculates how far away each satellite is, based on how long it took for the messages to arrive. Once it has received information from at least three satellites, your GPS can pinpoint your location. OK. There’s more. GPS signals from satellites include a timestamp, needed to calculate location, that stores the week number, so every 1,024 weeks or roughly every 20 years, the counter rolls over from 1,023 to zero. The first Saturday in April will mark the end of the 1,024th week. It will be the second time that the rollover has happened, the first being in 1999. Some fear that many things may be affected because over the past twenty years, more and more systems have integrated GPS into their operations. In April 2018 the US Department of Homeland Security issued a memo to make GPS users aware of the situation and strongly recommends owners and operators of critical infrastructure to prepare for the rollover. Hmmm. Drones, beware. If your GPS tells you to drive into the lake, don’t do it.

Someone just blasted down the street in front of my office in a big black truck and beeped their stupid airhorn that sounds like a train whistle. I’m a firm believer that they should be outlawed.

St. Patrick’s Day was Sunday. I came to the office for a little bit both Saturday and Sunday evening. Because it was St. Patrick’s Day week-end and because now we have so many bars, eating and drinking places in downtown LJ, I wasn’t too surprised to see guys in kilts, women in strange green costumes, men in strange green costumes, green striped leggings and a whole lot of celebration and rowdiness. All this for green beer.

Steve Martin –Boy, those French: they have a different word for everything!”

The first day of spring was the 20th. That means you can pick up your FREE package of flower or veggie seeds at our office when you place your $5 classified or FREE garage sale ad. That seems like a pretty good deal. So, let’s go over this…you need to find something to sell that is wasting away in your closet, garage, attic, kitchen cabinet -come place your ad and grab your seeds. When you sell your stuff, put the money in your pocket and in a few weeks your flowers will start blooming. It’s the gift that keeps on giving plus the bees and butterflies will love you for it.  😊

Steve Martin – “A day without SUNSHINE is like, you know…NIGHT.”

A woman never tells her age, but Barbie turns 60 this month. Barbie made her debut in 1959 and has had more than 200 careers. To celebrate this, Mattel is releasing the Pink Collection. I pulled up Proudly Pink Silkstone Barbie who has hot pink hair – just not my thing. I did read an article about the lady that designed Barbie’s clothes. Carol Spencer is now 86 years-old and has chronicled her journey in a new book called Dressing Barbie. She worked for several years as a fashion designer and illustrator in the apparel industry before beginning her career at Mattel as fashion designer for Barbie in 1963. Spencer said, “Times are changing and we’re all evolving, but I don’t think she was so out of proportion – people don’t understand doll scale. And she’s a doll! Part of Barbie will always be fantasy.” She also said that some of her favorites looks/outfits came from her own closet. If she was wearing it, then Barbie got an outfit just like it. My first Barbie was a red-headed pony-tail in a black/white stripe bathing suit. Wish I still had her, but I gave Barbie to a little neighbor girl when I was in high school, along with my barbie dream house and tons of clothes and furniture. I now encourage my own children to keep some of their toys for their own kids.

Seen on Facebook: Out of all my body parts, my eyeballs are in the best shape because I roll them like 342 times a day.

Recently, when the office microwave died, I brought the one from my house. I figured I could learn to live at my house without it. Both kids are away at school. How hard could it be. I even bought some small pots to heat up water for my morning pour-over coffee and a small skillet for leftovers. How hard could it be. Wait a sec, I already said that. Obviously, it’s hard for me. Did you know that reheating coffee and milk makes a huge mess when you leave it on low heat and go back to the bathroom to finish getting dressed? Yep. I did it twice. So, today, the Everyday Cheapskate in the Chronicle said to use automatic dishwashing detergent on the horrible, burned-on mess.(Guess I’m not the only one.) She said to fill the(in my case already destroyed) stainless steel pan, nonstick (ha), glass, porcelain or enameled cast iron with water and a detergent pod until the pod dissolves, then take a non-scratch scrub sponge and I quote, “wipe away the remains of the mess.”  I haven’t tried it but I’m sure that my burning days are not over. Do not use this on either cast iron or aluminum – neither is considered dishwasher-safe.

How do you decide which festival to go to?The Woodstock 50 Festival will take place August 16-18 in Watkins Glen, NY, about 115 miles NW of the original Woodstock site. Michael Lang, the producer and co-creator of the original Woodstock festival in 1969, is planning the festival to mark the 50th anniversary. The names of over 80 musicians or groups was just released, and it is unbelievable. A mix of old and new, but the list still needs more of the originals.

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts will hold a Woodstock 50th anniversary concert and festival on (you guessed it) August 16-18 on the site of the original Woodstock festival with Santana,Ringo Starr, Arlo Guthrie and Edgar Winter playing. Santana is listed at both festivals.Tickets $89 – $199.

Blue Water Highway is back in town on March 30th at 7:30 at The Clarion at Brazosport College. 979-230-3156. They’re the BEST!

Steve Martin – “I got a flue shot and now my chimney works perfectly.”

Recent Presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke says his campaign raised $6.1 million in its first 24 hours, beating all other Democratic candidates to date who have disclosed their first-day figures, so far. US Senator Bernie Sanders raised $5.9 million in his first 24 hours. Sanders’ campaign said over 225,000 individuals donated making their average donation $27. At this point I Googled ‘list of presidential candidates,’ and was very surprised at the numbers published by Ballotpedia. There are 208 Democratic candidates, 80 Republican candidates, 20 Libertarian candidates and 12 Green candidates who have filed with the FEC to run for president in 2020. They have a historical comparison chart of presidential candidates who filed with the FEC from 1980 to 2016.

It is believed that the 2020 election will be the one in which climate, flooded coastlines and global warming will finally be discussion questions. I sure hope so.

Igloo has issued a voluntary recall on various coolers after the father of a 5-year-old Florida boy shared a home surveillance video showing his son getting locked inside a cooler. The boy began playing inside, under the lid until he pushed the locking clip out and the lid locked. The child was a good screamer and his parents were able to find him quite quickly.

Mike Trout is signing a 12-year, $430 million contract to stay with the LA Angels, a new record for the largest contract in baseball history. They say he will go down in history with Willie Mays, Babe Ruth and others since he is the best player baseball has ever had.

“What’s Hoover got to do with it? Besides, I had a better year than he did.” – Babe Ruth, on being paid a higher salary than US President Herbert Hoover.

The creator of one of the most recognized brands of jelly beans, Jelly Belly, has founded a new company, Spectrum Confections, that has released a line of cannabis-infused sweets for candy lovers everywhere. David Klein started Jelly Belly in 1976. The new psychedelic treats are offered in 38 flavors and each recipe has been tested to ensure that the correct amount of cannabidiol (CBD) is added to each bean. Some vendors have been selling the beans for about $2 each. But sorry, according to their website the inventory is depleted at this time.

Have a great spring weekend. Thanks again for picking up The Source Weekly.

  • What I Heard This Week 10-26-2023

    by on October 25, 2023 - 0 Comments

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
