What I Heard This Week! November 29, 2018

What I Heard This Week November 28, 2018

This year, Pringles Thanksgiving crisps came in turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie flavors and sold as a three-pack of mini cans for $14.99. The special chips sold out in 41 minutes on Kelloggstore.combut were not sold in stores. Sorry, I didn’t know, or I would have told you about them.

Reba McEntire – “To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.”

Next year, Froberg’sin Alvin, will expand their operations to blueberry and blackberry picking and Christmas trees. You could cut colorful long-stemmed zinnias this past summer.

Did You Know? This information was found onthe City of Lake Jackson website. ‘Seniors, age 65 and older, are eligible to receive a discount equal to 40% of the base water and sewer bill. To sign up, a form is available in the water department at 25 Oak Drive.  Bring your driver’s license for verification.’

Jordan Thompson is a college student working at Moonshiners Southern Table and Bar in Houston. Her car had been broken into recently and the rent money was stolen from the vehicle. World Series champion, Alex Bregman and some pals, left her $500 for their iced teas. He had called the restaurant first to find out if there were any of the waitstaff that were single moms or struggling, because his purpose was to carry out a good deed. Perfect timing. We all need to take note and perform our own random acts of kindness. Today would be a great day to start.

Kate Upton and Justin Verlander announced the birth of their baby girl, Genevieve Upton Verlander, born November 7.

The husband and father who strangled his pregnant wife, suffocated their two young daughters and dumped them in oil tanks thenburied his wife in a shallow grave close by, has received a sentence of life without parole.  He wanted to escape his marriage to be with his‘girlfriend’. Prisoners don’t like prisoners that do ugly things to babies and children. It won’t go well for him. Oh, well. What is it about men that don’t want to be married anymore…just get a divorce.

More than 50,000 people have signed a petition pressuring Texas-based Whataburger to discontinue the use of foam cups and containers in favor of materials that are more earth-friendly. Good job.

Elizabeth Smart has given birth to her third child, a daughter named Olivia. In 2002, Smart was kidnapped at age 14 from her Salt Lake City bedroom and held captive for nine months. I am listening to another one of her books now, Where There’s Hope: Healing, Moving Forward and Never Giving Up. In this book, Smart interviews people that she admires that have had big and challenging situations that have happened in their lives and asks them, “Where does your hope and resilience come from?” I’m half way through the book and it is definitely worth a read or a listen.

A dead sperm whale found washed ashore in Indonesia had more than 1,000 assorted pieces of plastic found inside the dead whale. This included 155 cups, 25 bags, four bottles and two flip-flops along with massive amounts of assorted plastics weighing in at 13-pounds. Fish Ingesting plastic gives them a false sense of being full, leading them to eat less foods that provide nutrients, which leads to less weight, energy and swimming speed, making them more vulnerable to predators. Plastics also traps or entangle animals, sometimes causing them to drown or can pierce their digestive systems as they swallow it. Let’s do our part. Carry your own shopping bags and refuse to take carryout bags at the stores. Tell them why you’re not taking the bags. Don’t use plastic spoons or straws. Let’s hope that people start thinking about something other than their own convenience.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong died in 2012 at age 82. Space enthusiasts spent more than $3.7 million in just the first day of a rare auction of personal collection of memorabilia. Two other auctions of Armstrong’s collection are planned for next year in May and November. The 50th anniversary of the July 20, 1969 moon landing will be next year. Mark and Rick Armstrongplan to use the money for good, to make their mom and dadproud. “Even though he was a scientist, dad was really environmentally conscious. He always said Earth was our spaceship…we couldn’t build a better one so let’s take care of the one we have.”

When I was a younger adult and the Neiman Marcus Christmascatalog was delivered, it seemed to be the kick-off of the ‘selfish part’ of the Christmas season. So many extravagant gift items that I knew I could never have, but dreams are powerful. The catalog didn’t get thrown away for months. Current day has the list of imaginative gifts announced online – no catalogs delivered to my desk anymore. This year they call it the ‘2018 Fantasy Gifts List’ and the gifts are priced from $9 to $7.1 million. Yikes. $325,000 will get you a custom-made, in-home candy bar. How about a one-of-a-kind, 74-foot solar-powered mega yachtthat can accommodate up to 12 guests at a time, a full kitchen with separate ‘staff’ quarters. It’s only $7.1. That’s million$. You can become a secret agent in Las Vegas for a mere $315,000. This involves fast-moving McLaren and Ferrari rides, shooting at everything in sight with your very own machine gun then firing your pistol from a high-flying helicopter while you make a get-a-way,or you can visit tigers at theTaj Mahal for $630,000. When we were kids, we wanted cans of asparagus or underwear in our stocking. Sigh.

The Source Weekly is having a Snowman(the non-melting variety) Decorating contest. No snow needed for this contest. Businessman Bob Wilson plans to personally deliver a$1000 check to each of the 980 students and 105 employees of Paradise High School since many of their homes were damaged or destroyed recently in California’s most devastating wildfire. That’s a lot of money and another random act of kindness.

You heard about the homeless veteran that gave his last $20 to a lady when her car ran out of gas in Philadelphia last year. The woman and her boyfriend started a GoFundMe and received more than $400,000. Then the homeless guy publicly stated that the couple had spent all ’his’ money on luxury items and casino trips. Now the story is that the whole thing was totally fake – the story, the homeless guy, the lady (and I use that word loosely) and the now ex-boyfriend, were in on the scam. The woman’s attorney is saying that she didn’t understand that this was a crime. Hmmm.

IHOP inLake Jackson is having a Toy Drive for The Dream Centeron December 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12th from 7am-7pm. Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
