What I Heard This Week 03-31-2022

What I Heard This Week March 30, 2022

Billionaire philanthropist, MacKenzie Scott, has donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity, a global organization that partners with communities to build or improve housing. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $2.7 billion last year (2021) to 286 groups supporting a variety of causes. In July 2020, she donated more than $1.7 billion to diverse organizations including historically Black colleges and universities. Brazosport College received one of her gifts. Later in 2020, Scott announced she donated an additional $4.2 billion to 384 organizations including food banks, emergency relief funds, and debt relief. What a woman.

“Good Food. Good Life.” Russia is being punished by taking away their chocolate. Facing growing pressure from critics to exit Russia, Swiss food company Nestle is suspending sales of Kit Kat bars, Nespresso pods, and San Pellegrino bottled water in Russia, but will continue to sell essential items like infant food and medical nutrition. Yogurt maker Danone and Pepsi said that they will suspend some business but will continue to sell essential products like milk and baby formula in Russia. Food companies are having a tough time as they weigh access to food as a basic human right, but respond to pressure from critics who say pulling out completely is necessary for sanctions against the Russian economy to succeed. It could have a real impact on how their brands are now perceived, and their bottom lines. Staying in that country and paying taxes to the budget of a terrorist country is perceived as killing defenseless children & mothers in other countries. Hmmm. It is up to us.

Humans are so reliant on technology now. Laptops, computers, smart phones. Some of us… hmmm, I wonder who they’re talking about… have not developed particularly good back-up habits to ensure that information and personal data, pictures, and videos, are secure and safe. When my son was young, I lost years of pictures when I handed him one of my old phones, and he immediately wiped it clean. Could you call any of your family if your phone died? In 1998, before the release of Toy Story 2, someone entered a command on the drives where Pixar stores the film’s files, deleting 90% of the film. Broken hard drives, hacked computers, erratic phones, we have all had it happen at least once. March 31st is National World Backup Day. In 1956, an IBM engineer came up with the idea of the external hard drive and in the 1960’s a computer scientist is believed to have invented cloud storage.

Most all of our personal information is already out there on the web, so our job is to prevent criminals from using it for their own benefit. And they will, it is just a matter of time. One step you can take is to change your passwords often. Set aside a couple of hours at least once a year, to change all your passwords on your accounts… do it more often for critical accounts like banks or health care providers. Yes, then do it again in 6 months. If you have accounts like retailers and restaurants that make you set up an account in order to purchase from them, and they now email you constantly, then close them out. Remember to upgrade the quality of your password, and never, never, never use the same password twice. One article said that if the world stopped reusing passwords for multiple sites, we would cut cybercrime in half overnight. Don’t just change one letter or number. That makes it way too easy for the bad guys. The longer and more random the password, the more power is required to hack it. If you use passphrases, use words that don’t seem to make sense together. The example they used was RedEnginesEatPurpleDust%!*. Get you a password journal – I use an address book – then print the name of the account, the login, the password, and the date you created it. Do it for every account, then put your journal in a safe place. Or you can get an online password manager. They store the information in the cloud so all you have to do is change the master password about every 6 months. There is more. Just remember that there are so many evils out there right now.

Madeleine Albright, American politician and diplomat who served as the 64th United States Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton, died of cancer at the age of 85. She was the first female secretary of state in U.S. history. Taylor Hawkins, drummer for Foo Fighters died at 50. According to a forensic report, his heart weighed double the average for a man his age. They think that this may have played a part in his death, along with a cocktail of 10 drugs found in his system.

On Google Earth, someone spotted a mountain of stolen bikes in a man’s backyard. I saw the picture and bikes were stacked high and covered the entire backyard property. Hundreds of bikes. The neighbors said the bikes had been there for years. Did the neighbors not scratch their heads and wonder why?

It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis,” Phil Collins told the concert crowd. “After tonight we all have to get real jobs.” The Genesis drummer has suffered from poor health since 2007 when he dislocated the vertebra in his upper neck during a concert. The 71-year-old began using a cane to walk in 2017 and performed all of the tour’s gigs seated in a chair.

Former President Donald Trump released an official statement announcing that he had a hole-in-one at his golf course. He said, “It took place at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on the 7th hole, which was playing 181-yards into a slight wind. I hit a 5-iron, which sailed magnificently into a rather strong wind, with approximately 5 feet of cut, whereupon it bounced twice and then went clank, into the hole.” “I won’t tell you who won because I am a very modest individual, and you will then say I was bragging – and I don’t like people who brag!” I bet Saturday Night Live has already written a skit about it for this weekend.

The safety harness and seat of the 14-year-old boy who fell to his death from an amusement park ride in Florida last week, were still locked at the end of the ride that is described as the world’s tallest free-standing drop tower, where 30 riders rise to the top, tilt forward and plunge nearly 400 feet at speeds reaching over 75 mph. There is speculation that the teen may have been too heavy for the ride. He was only 14 years old but already 6 feet, 5 inches tall, 340 pounds, with aspirations to make it to the NFL, but had been turned away from other rides because of his size. Dollywood has temporarily closed their drop tower ride that was made by the same manufacturer.

This is a story that needs to be shared. All Chick-fil-A locations throughout the US and Canada are partnering with DAR PRO Solutions, a Texas-based manufacturing company that will convert all the fast-food restaurant’s used cooking oil into cleaner burning renewable transportation fuel. More than 700 million gallons of renewable diesel are expected to be produced in 2022 as a result of the companies’ joint venture.

The University of Houston announced that it has created the Energy Transition Institute after receiving a $10 million gift from oil giant Shell. The institute will focus on production and use of reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy for all and will focus on three core areas: hydrogen, carbon management and circular plastics. The iconic koalas are now listed as endangered in several states and territories in Australia. Climate change and habitat loss had led to dramatic declines in their population. This comes after the black summer fires of 2019 and 2021, which some estimate may have left as many as 60,000 koalas dead or injured. A sad day for their nation.

Shanghai is beginning China’s largest and most extensive Covid lockdown in two years, to conduct mass testing and to control a growing outbreak. Blue Origin is set for their 4th crewed sub-orbital space flight on Thursday, two days later than planned because of expected high winds. One of Blue Origin’s first employees and architect of the New Shepard program, was added to the crew, replacing comedian Pete Davidson. Blue Origin and its customers do not discuss the cost of a New Shepard seat, but prices are thought to be in the half-million-dollar range or more. An Indiana man was arrested after murdering his wife by striking her in the face with a gallon-sized cement flowerpot after having fought about divorce because he was having an affair. The woman had just finished chemotherapy for breast cancer just days before the murder. Two teenage girls in New England were fortunate because their mothers loved them enough to turn them in to police after they assaulted, by kicking and punching, homeless people on the streets. The two girls are 14 and 16, as well as a 15-year-old boy who filmed the incident while egging on the attack. There are other videos circulating that appear to be the same situation.

Last night while I was making ramen soup, I watched the movie, Rescued by Ruby on Netflix, a real-life true story about an Australian shepherd/border collie mix rescue dog with behavioral problems (clever but naughty), trained by a state trooper who dreams of joining the K-9 Search & Rescue team. It was so good… and sweet. It is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and nothing gets 100%.

Will Smith and Chris Rock. Sigh. It is always a bad sign when you have to announce at the Academy Awards or family reunions that we do not condone violence. What we really want to see in our society, are good, positive role models from our athletics, politicians, actors, parents, school officials… you know what I’m saying. I always told my children that some individuals are put on this Earth and in their lives, not as a good example, but as a healthy guide or blueprint of what NOT to do. This gets to be a harder sell as human behavior seems to get more hostile and frightening.

On Sunday, I had the opportunity (thanks to Bonnie & David Novosad) to take my daughter to see Come From Away at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston. The story is so incredibly good. On September 11th, 2001, 7000 people are stranded in the tiny, charming town of Gander, Newfoundland after all flights into the US are grounded. While stranded, the people of Gander house, feed and entertain the “come from aways” as they find love, loss, and hope in the aftermath of terror. I have to say that it is one of the BEST musicals I have ever seen. I cried and I laughed. I bet there are still tickets left for this weekend. You have to mask which is fortunate because it helps catch the water from your eyes.

On the way to the office this morning, the bumper sticker on the car in front of me said, “I brake for Frogs.” The light took a long time to change but gave me time to think. I pivoted from thinking how silly it was to wondering about what kind of world would it be if everyone braked for frogs! I decided that it is definitely a world I want to live in.

Much Ado About Nothing – North V South

Much Ado About Nothing September 5, 2018

Much Ado by Jean Ciampi

If you listen to the Flat Earth people, you believe, if you go far enough, you can eventually get to the edge of the Earth. At that point you fall off into the Abyss to be eaten by sea monsters. While I’m relatively confident this is not factual, I do know that if you go north any further than about Oklahoma City, things are no longer as they should be.  I believe once you’re out of range of a Whataburger, a Buc-cee’s bathroom, and some way of picking up an Astros’ broadcast, you have left civilization and should turn around immediately. No one should be expected to spend any extended time in a location without a Chick-fil-A. Yet, here I am.

If the absence of sweet tea wasn’t enough of an indication that I had sadly left the South, then realizing that practically every grocery store, daycare, and dentist office sells a complete selection of hard liquor cleared up any doubts. You can spend 20 minutes browsing brands of single malt scotch at the corner gas station. There are more types of tequilas than candy bars! What happened to that “Don’t Drink and Drive” message?

Liquor stores are called Party Stores. I suppose when every store is a liquor store, you have to find a way to set yourself apart. At the party store, along with all the makings for a Long Island Ice Tea and bottles of wine that are more than my monthly mortgage payment, you can also pick up the “Cheese of the Month” which might just happen to be the 2017 Supreme Champion at the World Cheese Awards. We’re not talking Velveeta here. Not at the party store. No, sir. Go back to the Shell station for that.

Party stores have gift ideas like personalized specialty glasses for your favorite Moscow Mule drinker. Every place else just has a local jackass with a red Solo cup. Party stores offer a full deli stocked with imported prosciutto. Other spots have packages of peppered beef jerky. If you ask me, it’s all just a bit of semantics.

Maybe there needs to be a little less focus on alcohol and more attention paid to negotiating a Ninfa’s or Pappasito’s here in the frozen tundra. Michigan may not be the edge of the Earth, but I think you can see it from here.

Much Ado About Nothing – Food Offended

Much Ado About Nothing August 8, 2018

Much Ado by Jean Ciampi

Burger King offends me. Standing in allegiance with vegans and vegetarians everywhere, I must demand that they change their name. Burger, naturally, is an affront to the sensibilities of all animal lovers everywhere. Not to mention, the idea of having a crowned ruler dictating over a bun-oriented sandwich of any type seems highly archaic. To show greater tolerance and understanding, Burger King must forthwith be called Plant Based Protein Socialist Leader.

Dairy Queen also offends me. On behalf of everyone who may be lactose intolerant and unable to speak up for themselves due to irritable bowel, stomach pain and gas, I will be their voice. Again there’s the obvious issue with the crowned head of state thing, which is, of course, offensive, except to a very small portion of the LGBQT population. We’ll give partial credit for that. Otherwise, the name Dairy Queen must be updated to a more sensitive Soy Replacement Benevolent Monarch.

Freebirds World Burritos are okay. They seem to be inclusive of all avian species across the planet and have designated them as free. FreeRangeBirds World Burritos would be even better. No one wants a burrito raised in a cage, so that’d be taking the responsible extra step to ensure that there’s no possibility of anyone being offended.

Chick-fil-A, however, is a problem. While I understand it holds a high level of popularity, it has come under fire for the Conservative views of their ownership. I believe that changing the name to Empowered-Woman-fil-A would go a long way to correcting a lot of the offenses, both real and imaginary. You wouldn’t name a restaurant Babe-fil-A or Broad-fil-A. Chick-fil-A just is no longer politically correct and offends all women and those who want to be women or think their women or know women even casually.

In a world where we are all so deeply offended by every single last living thing, I think it’s time that the dining industry do their time in the hot seat. They must stop with the oppression and put the happy back in every single meal for every single person as dictated by that person’s believes and opinions no matter how individual or oddball.

So, if you don’t mind, I’d like a #2 Meal with a Diet Coke and a side of total tolerance and acceptance. Oh, and hold the onions. Onion breath is offensive.

What I Heard This Week! March 22, 2018

What I Heard This Week March 22, 2018

What I Heard This Week by Lisa Baker

The lead engineer with the company that designed the pedestrian bridge that collapsed in Miami, killing and injuring several, had called the state two days earlier to report cracks in the concrete span, but he left a voicemail message that wasn’t heard until the day after the bridge fell. Not good. A witness to the loud boom that followed the collapse said, “it sounded like the world was ending.” The estimated weight of the bridge was 950-tons. Another witness said it sounded like a bomb.

The AstroDome, ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, will be designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. The Dome opened on April 9, 1965 to a sold-out crowd of more than 47,000 for a baseball game between the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees. The Dome will be 53 years old next month and the county spends about $170,000 each year to maintain the Dome but they will begin their $105-million renovation in October.

Toys R Us says it will slowly shut all 800 stores in the US. There are 18 stores in Houston area. They filed for bankruptcy six months ago and have struggled to pay down nearly $8-billion in debt. Charles Lazarus founded Children’s Bargain Town in 1948 in Washington, then opened the first Toys R Us in 1957 and in 1965 Geoffrey the giraffe became the company’s mascot.

Don’t forget to feed the birds. Our feathered friends are now migrating, and some will endure a 600-mile flight over the Gulf of Mexico to Texas. I went to Tractor Supply this morning to pick up bird seed, corn, mealworms and sunflower seeds so I can do my part for their trip. After standing in line twice, I decided that the nicest people shop at Tractor Supply on Sunday mornings. They have a great assortment of spring vegetable seeds and products. Everyone in the store was happy, kind, and not hurried. There was the “store” cat that welcomed us with her friendly purrs at the checkout counter AND the baby chicks AND baby ducks were making such precious spring sounds. It was a really, nice visit.

A group of prairie chickens are known as a “little house” or a “pack” of prairie chickens. Thanks to the GCBO newsletter for this little tidbit of info and some gorgeous bird pictures.

Speaking of chicken…Chick-Fil-A just released their newest menu item, a seasonal beverage/dessert called the Frosted Sunrise, a blend of their signature vanilla Icedream and Simply Orange Juice. I say, just bring back the raisin & carrot salad AND the chicken salad sandwich and I’ll be happy. Who ever heard of a “healthy” chicken restaurant without a chicken salad sandwich?!?

It’s the newest thing: If you google ‘pickle flavored foods’ you will find Pickle-Ice Freeze Pops, Pickle Candy Canes, Pickle Cashews, Pickle Peanuts, Pickle Mints, Pickle Candy, Intense Pickle Doritos, Pickle Popcorn, Pickle Gummies, and Pickle Salt Shakers. In June, Sonic will unveil their Pickle Juice Snow Cone Slush. Tasters say it’s surprisingly delicious. Very sweet and tangy. I know that when working the concession at games, I always had requests for pickle snow cones, so here’s your chance.

Did you know that The Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show animals must have their urine tested for drugs? They also pluck the animal’s hair for a DNA analysis. The pig that I read about took an hour to relieve himself, having walked around with a clear bag tied around his belly to catch the pee. I just never thought about this. City girl.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with online solicitation of a minor under 14, accused of sending sexually explicit messages to a 10-year-old Pearland girl. The girl’s parents showed the Pearland Police the messages but are still wondering how the man got the girl’s phone number. Parents…are you listening?

Actress Emily Blunt is 35. She will play in Mary Poppins Returns where the stories will be taken from PL Travers additional seven books. Michael and Jane are all grown up with Michael living on Cherry Tree Lane with his three children. Lin-Manual Miranda (Hamilton) and Dick Van Dyke will also be in it, along with Meryl Streep. The original Mary Poppins was set in 1910. This sequel goes forward to 1935. They plan a 2018 Christmas Day release, so it will be a while, but I bet it’s practically perfect in every way. I’m going to drive you crazy talking about this one.

Texas should have an especially beautiful bluebonnet season. Great for roadside pictures of the kids but be careful of fire ants, rattlesnakes and other critters that can be hiding in the pretty. Be sure to treat the flowers with care because every time you sit on one, you likely kill it. Do not pick the flowers (the seeds need to fall off for next year’s flowers) or pull them up.

Fleur-de-lis, or “lily flower” in French, is a symbol whose petals represent faith, wisdom, and chivalry.

Roses are red, violets are blue, your daisies are droopy, oh, what can you do? Mix two tablespoons of white vinegar & two tablespoons of sugar together and add to your flower vase water. Replace both the water and the vinegar mixture daily. This will keep your spring flower bouquet looking pretty for longer.  It is amazing how white and apple cider vinegar can be used for so many common household solutions.

Charles Manson died in a prison hospital while serving a life sentence for orchestrating the 1969 killings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and eight others. His body has been on ice since November 2017 while many came forward to claim his corpse. There were a bunch of wills filed and many claimed to be his heir. A grandson of the cult leader has now won the bizarre California court battle to claim his remains.

Cooking classes this week-end at HEB March 23, 6-8pm in Lake Jackson. Shrimp fried rice, chicken egg rolls and a homemade sauce. Stop by the Business Center and see if they have any openings. 21 and up only. $20 per person.

Walmart plans to expand grocery delivery to 100 cities. Order by 1pm – have it delivered in four hours.

Happy 75th Birthday Lake Jackson. This information was taken from the Lake Jackson Historical Association. In the early 1940’s The Dow Chemical Company, located in Midland, Michigan was looking for a site to build a chemical complex. Dow wanted to extract magnesium from seawater with technology based on its patents for extracting magnesium from the brines beneath the Midland area. Texas looked like a good choice. Dow narrowed the field of potential sites to Corpus Christi and Freeport. As the story goes, the Dow Board of Directors personally visited both locations. They arrived in Corpus Christi during the worst cold spell in decades. The hotels had inadequate heating and the automobiles had no heaters. However, when the Board of Directors arrived in Freeport, the cold front had passed, and the weather was sunny and warm. They then decided for the Freeport site on March 7, 1940. Even though the story is often repeated, in reality, the company had done extensive studies of both locations comparing land availability, access to raw materials, access to transportation and other factors before authorizing an $18-million plant. The first load of construction equipment arrived in Freeport by train on March 22, 1940. Workers soon began building in the area known today as Plant A.

WikiAnswers says that $1-million dollars in 1940 would be worth $22-million dollars in today’s money.

Coming Home, celebrating 75 years of Lake Jackson will be this Friday and Saturday evening at The Clarion. Wine, beer and great music from generations of musicians that are coming home to entertain us. Earlier in the day on Saturday, 9am – 2pm, is the Auto and Cycle Show family fun at the Civic Center. It’s not too late to show a car or be a vendor. There will be Pinewood Derby racing, door prizes and bounce house for the kids. Come help us celebrate.

Andrew Liveris is leaving DowDuPont after four decades and will be replaced by Jim Fitterling when Dow reclaims its name as an independent company next year. 56-year-old Fitterling is the first openly gay executive to be named CEO of a major chemical company and will continue as a vocal proponent of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in corporate America.

What is Human Trafficking? A Nigerian woman on a cul-de-sac in Cinco Ranch was forced to work without pay as a nanny to five children – forced to sleep on the floor,  bathe in cold water, eat leftovers, work 20-hour shifts seven days a week, she could not take breaks, sit down or watch TV, could not use the phone (sounds like the job of a mother except for the following), see a doctor for an injured arm attend church regularly or walk beyond the immediate neighborhood with the young children. The couple slapped her, called her ‘the idiot’, withheld her passport and threatened harm if she did not cook, clean and tend to the children. The couple had helped the woman travel to the US from their native Nigeria by creating false documents that enabled the forced labor. They have now been sentenced to seven months in federal prison and will owe the woman $121,000 in compensation. A concerned, observant neighbor brought this situation to the attention of a human trafficking task force.

JoyBell C.-It’s not very easy to grow up into a woman. We are always taught, almost bombarded, with ideals of what we should be at every age in our lives: “This is what you should wear at age twenty”, “That is what you must act like at age twenty-five”, “This is what you should be doing when you are seventeen.” But amidst all the many voices that bark all these orders and set these ideals for girls today, there lacks the voice of assurance. There is no comfort and assurance. I want to be able to say, that there are four things admirable for a woman to be, at any age! Whether you are four or forty-four or nineteen! It’s always wonderful to be elegant, it’s always fashionable to have grace, it’s always glamorous to be brave, and it’s always important to own a delectable perfume! Yes, wearing a beautiful fragrance is in style at any age!”

Thank you for reading this,

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
