What I Heard This Week 11-18-2021

What I Heard This Week November 17, 2021

A woman was asked by officials at the Antwerp Zoo to please change her behavior when she visits a 38-year-old Chimpanzee named Chita. The woman claims she is having a real relationship with Chita and compares it to an affair. Chita had been kept as a pet but 30 years ago, he was given to the zoo when his owners found his behavior unmanageable. He has had ongoing issues being able to integrate into the zoo’s chimpanzee troupe. The zoo said, “When Chita is constantly surrounded by visitors, the other animals ignore him and don’t consider him part of the group.” But the woman insists she is in love with the chimp and said, “I haven’t got anything else. Why do they want to take this away from me?” Hmmm.
I guess Cole Porter said it best:
THE chimpanzees in the zoos do it,
Some courageous kangaroos do it,
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
I’m sure giraffes on the sly do it,
Even eagles as they fly do it,
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.

The DFW International Airport passenger that struck and verbally abused an American Airlines flight attendant (after becoming upset because her seat did not recline) has been fined $23,000 by the FAA. The woman also refused to comply with federal face mask requirements. The FAA has already received more than 5,000 complaints of unruly passengers this year alone, including 100 acts of violence against flight crews. And this is happening without alcohol. On a happier note, United Airlines announced that the company will begin serving hard liquor on flights of at least 301 miles after halting this service for Covid. Well, I am speechless. Imagine alcohol-induced UNRULY behavior on LONG flights.

Tiger King star Joe Exotic aka Joseph Maldonado has reported from prison that he has an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Idaho has reported the first human to die from rabies since 1978. New Jersey joined California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, and Virginia, all states with similar bans on the sale of cosmetics that are tested on animals. More interest in cruelty-free products.  Beto O’Rourke is running for Governor of Texas and believes he can beat Greg Abbott.

READ THIS: The full moon on November 19th is the Full Beaver moon. According to Farmers’ Almanac, this was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. There will also be a near-total lunar eclipse of about three and a half hours long at the same time the full moon reaches peak illumination – the longest lunar eclipse of the century and the first of this length in 580 years. You will be able to start seeing it around midnight with the maximum around 3am. Everyone in North America will be able to see it. Time for lunar eclipse party.

China and the US have issued a surprise joint pledge to work together to slow climate change in the next decade. China and the US are also the world’s two largest emitters. I always tell you about climate change because it is for you, for my family, your family, and for everything we love. I know everyone doesn’t believe that there is a problem, but if we can change the mind of just one person.

A Massachusetts funeral home is being sued after one of the side straps on the casket lowering device broke, causing the casket to fall into the grave and break open. The corpse of their loved one fell out, and it would seem embalming fluid was evident. The family is alleging negligence and reckless infliction of emotional distress and seeking $50,000 in damages.

Singer Jesse Colin Young of The Youngbloods is 80. He and his daughter, Jazzie Young, just released a new single and music video, “Trouble.” The father/daughter duo is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the movie, Harold and Maude, with their rendition of the Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) soundtrack hit. That brings a smile to my face because that movie was a favorite of mine, and my friend Terrie in high school. Such a long time ago, but it seems like yesterday. She and I would walk the neighborhood in our bell bottom jeans that were too long dragging the ground, all the while dissecting that movie. We were such intellects at 15.

If you are a grandparent looking for a perfect Christmas or birthday gift, then I can recommend this with all my heart. My two children attended Kindermusik classes from the time they were about 8 months old, still sitting in my lap, until they were about 4 or 5. I still have all their musical instruments in a basket here at my office. It was such a fun time, and the truth is, music is math. Many math problems require complex thinking and music strengthens that part of the brain. The Kindermusik website says, Kindermusik is the world’s leading provider of music-based education for children from birth through age seven. We use the power and joy of music-making to help children learn and grow during the years most critical to brain development. Since 1978, Kindermusik has helped millions of children around the world build a strong foundation for a lifetime love of learning. For local classes, go to pandatree.kindermusik.com.

If the above doesn’t interest you, then there is always the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ultimate Party Wagon vehicle, 20-inches long, 14-inches tall, and 12-inches wide. Indeed, it’s big enough to transport six of your 7-inch scale action figures. It has removable pizza-rims, boombox, radar dish, plus a winch and tow hook. Only $449.99, for a January delivery. I would tell you more, but really…  haven’t you already lost interest? Remember, you only have about a month left to shop.

Men argue. Nature acts.”- Voltaire in 1764. Four words with such powerful meaning.

The first Lethal Weapon movie came out in 1987 with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound. Number 2 released in 1989 and Joe Pesci was added to the cast. Number 3, with Rene Russo, was the most financially successful, following with Number 4 in 1998 with Chris Rock. Director Richard Donner was responsible for all four films but gave his blessing to Mel Gibson before his death in July, to direct the fifth Lethal Weapon. Fun fact: Carrie Fisher was actually hired as a script doctor for Lethal Weapon 3.

It was time for some new cooking extracts, and I order mine from a company called OliveNation. A few years ago, I made homemade vanilla extract for all my Christmas gifts. I ordered the correct brown bottles that you are supposed to use so light does not harm the vanilla, and I used 6-8 Madagascar vanilla beans in each bottle, along with either rum, bourbon, or vodka. I even take my spent beans, dry them well, then make vanilla sugar in the blender. So, as I was ordering my orange oil and maple extract, I thought to myself… this might be the year to make extract again for everyone. Well, on second thought, probably not this year! One single Madagascar vanilla bean is now priced at $6.99 before tax. One little skinny bean. I normally order a pound and that now costs $282.99. Nah. I will just send cards.

Why was a little boy there?!? The 9th and 10th victims of Travis Scott’s disastrous Astroworld music festival tragedy have died. The latest was the 9-year-old boy that was trampled to death. The medical company hired for the evening (crew of 70 medical personnel, which in my opinion, should have been enough) tried desperately to save the lives of fans, but had the huge task of treating eleven people who were all in cardiac arrest at the same time. Rapper Drake, served as a special guest that evening. In one lawsuit he is accused along with Travis Scott, of inciting the crowd into actions that left the concert-goers severely injured. One story, along with pictures, said that after Drake left Astroworld that evening, he hosted an after-party at Dave and Busters, then spent $1 million dollars at a Houston strip club. Hmmm. He must have really been torn up about the events of the evening.

I may act like I’m OK… but deep down inside, I sure do miss Hastings.

An Oklahoma City woman recorded a video of her fellow church members telling her to leave and threatening to call the police after accusing her of bringing marijuana into the church. She explains that it is actually cilantro, meant as a garnish for menudo, the Mexican soup that she had brought to share with them. She says, “Smell it, I promise you.” This would never have happened in Texas.

I was called pretty today. Well, actually the full sentence was you’re pretty annoying. But I only focus on the positive.

On Saturday morning, I made myself a list of things I needed to accomplish before the day was over. Carwash, vacuum office, dogfood, and Lowe’s to see if anything new had come into garden. Note that there is nothing yet in the garden section. I also needed a new shower head with removable handheld, so I can bathe the dog without killing my back now that it’s too cold to bathe him in the driveway. While I was studying the top ten shower heads on my phone, I met a sweet lady named Pearl from Van Vleck on the shower head isle. We started talking… and it is best that we don’t live next door to each other because we would never get anything else done. I sure enjoyed our conversation. Waterpik won, then as I unpacked the box last night, I realized that although described as chrome, it is actually silver covered plastic. This one may have to go back to the store.

The Harry Potter cast will reunite for a 20th anniversary TV special “Return to Hogwarts” reunion on HBO Max, New Year’s Day. But no J.K. Rowling mentioned. This is just one of several Harry Potter 20th anniversary events planned by Warner Bros. Houston Zoo Lights is happening. You know you will love it! On March 18th, 2022, there will be a new Downton Abbey movie called A New Era. It would seem that Maggie Smith inherits a villa from a former love, Tom Branson finds happiness with maid Lucy Smith, and Daisy marries. I cannot wait. Thanks for taking the time to read and shop The Source Weekly this week. We appreciate you so much.

What I Heard This Week! 08-26-2021

What I Heard This Week August 25, 2021

A 30-year-old El Paso woman posed as her 13-year-old daughter and has been charged with trespassing on school grounds, supposedly to prove the vulnerability of the security at the school. She documented the day on social media and is now charged with criminal trespass, tampering with government records and an unrelated outstanding traffic warrant. In the video she is wearing a hoodie and a mask, so it is believable that she could get away with it.

July 2021 was the Earth’s hottest month ever recorded, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Mike Richards stepped down as the new host of Jeopardy, just days after it was announced that he had been chosen. The news came after past lawsuits of Richards’s alleged harassment and discrimination on The Price is Right resurfaced, though he denies the claims. Some of the host’s past controversial comments about women, Jewish people, and the disabled community made on a 2013 podcast, also made the rounds. I have always told my kids that you must be careful, because you never know who your next boss may be. Looks like the ‘people’ decided he wasn’t the right man for the job. Supposedly, Ken Jennings is now in the lead to replace Richards. Poor LeVar Burton.

At the start of the pandemic, McDonald’s took away some breakfast items, McMuffins and McGriddles. Then they started serving pastries all day, no breakfast sandwiches. There’s a blueberry muffin, cinnamon roll, and apple fritters. On September 1, they will add the Glazed Pull Apart Donut, large enough that you can share…fried dough, sugar glaze and…well, that’s it. Fried dough and sugar glaze. Just like a real donut. You may not want to share. Really. When is the last time you shared a donut? OREO just announced two new limited-edition cookie flavors. Salted Caramel Brownie, and Apple Cider Donut. Hmmm. At least it’s not Pumpkin Pie Spice. Mountain Dew VooDew 2021 is being released for the third year, just in time to be scary. You will always know when I am hungry, by what I write. I’m starving right now.

There was a very tiny bit of very hot gardening going on at the back of my office this weekend and while I was back there, I happened to see a longtime friend. Our conversation went from trivial to such hot weather, to climate change. When I mentioned to him that he needed to enjoy it, because it is the coolest summer of the rest of our lives, he said, “So, I’m guessing you believe in climate change.” I do believe. Yes, indeed, I do. He stated that he does not believe. This week, the world’s leading authority on climate change, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, told the world our climate is dangerously close to a tipping point that would lead to climate chaos, and that human activities are to blame.  Deadly and record-breaking forest fires, heat waves, floods and droughts occurring not only in the U.S., but around the world, are showing us the beginnings of extreme weather. They are calling this “code red for humanity.” There is a positive side to the report showing that we can change our course, but it can’t be left to chance. It will be determined by the choices we make from this day on. Not just a couple of people, or a couple of companies – every single one of us, in every community, in every country, as a common goal to heal our planet. So, I started thinking, after my friend left. “What if you’re wrong?” If you are wrong, then eventually and quickly, we destroy everything beautiful thing that we are so blessed to have in this world, leaving a very dangerous and threatening place for our children and grandchildren. If I’m wrong, we will simply be leaving a much prettier, cleaner, smarter world for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Your actions matter. You can make a difference. Why not start today.

The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left. Isaiah 24:5-6

Charlie Watts, drummer for the Rolling Stones since January 1963 and one of the greatest in rock & roll history, has died at the age of 80. His first love was jazz, so he took the Stones to great levels. The news comes weeks after it was announced that Watts would miss the band’s new US tour dates to recover from an unspecified medical procedure. He had previously been treated for throat cancer in 2004. My son reminded me of a story. As the three of us were leaving the Rolling Stones 2019 Houston concert, my daughter remarked, “I wish Charlie Watts was my grandpa.” He was a sharp dresser, married to the same woman for 57 years, and as an artist, after their concerts he would go back to the hotel (while others partied) and sketch a picture of the bed. Watts told Rolling Stone: “I make a sketch of every bedroom I sleep in. I’ve sketched every bed I’ve slept in on tour since about 1968.” Perhaps it will become a best-selling coffee table book for all of his fans.

Don Everly, one-half of the pioneering Everly Brothers whose harmonizing country rock hits impacted a generation of rock ‘n’ roll music, has died. He was 84. The brothers began singing country music in 1945 on their family’s radio show in Shenandoah, Iowa. Bye Bye Love, Let It Be Me, All I Have to Do Is Dream, and Wake Up Little Susie. Child star Jane Withers died at 95. As a girl, she landed leading roles along with Shirley Temple. As an adult, she was known as Josephine the Plumber in ads for Comet cleanser. Nanci Griffith, Texas-born singer-songwriter celebrated in folk and country-music circles for her crystal-clear voice, and storytelling skills, died in Nashville at age 68.

In Fredericksburg, a Dalmatian gave birth to sixteen puppies. A typical litter is about around 6-8. Hmmm. Pongo and Perdita are the parents in the story of 101 Dalmatians, and they had 15 puppies. General Motors and Ford are locked in a trademark battle over which company gets to use the word cruise in branding for its self-driving vehicles. How about neither! Two customers at a North Houston McDonald’s drive-through were arrested after allegedly pulling a gun on the restaurant’s manager during a dispute over the amount of salt on their fries. One of the suspects was out on probation for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Hmmm.

A dehydrated, underweight alligator was spotted basking in the sun on a Padre Island beach, 400 miles west of where it had been tagged in the bayous of Louisiana, puzzling National Park Service rangers. It was transported to a rehabilitation center, where he/she says you’ll have to read the book, to find out the real story. 😊 A 72-year-old Kingwood man, called the Tan Ben Franklin, has run races on every single continent and in all fifty states, finishing nearly 800 marathons. Serena Williams and Nike have launched a new line of women’s apparel and shoes. Some colleges are now un-enrolling students if they are not vaccinated or charging thousands of dollars in Covid testing fees to remain on-campus. It’s about time. In some cases, they are threatening to cut off their wi-fi. Bet that works better than anything else.

What’s more American than apple pie and hot dogs? Chevy challenged Guy Fieri to craft a recipe, with all the flavors we associate with baseball. Remember the Chevy jingle from the 1970s, “baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet.” Supposedly, Car & Driver named it the co-best car commercial of all time. Before you turn up your nose, read the ingredients. It actually sounds pretty good…handheld, savory, sweet, and quite pretty. This recipe is for just one single Apple Pie Hotdog, but I think you might want to at least double the recipe even if you’re by yourself this Labor Day, because all the reviews say they’re quite good.

Apple Pie Hotdog
1 packet pie crust dough
1 ¾ oz apple pie filling, lightly mashed with a fork
½ oz bacon jam
1 all-beef hot dog, dried off
2 tsp Demerara sugar (substitute: Turbinado sugar. Light brown sugar. Granulated sugar. Sanding sugar.)
1 egg beaten
Pinch apple pie spice
A drizzle of apple mustard (50/50 apple pie filling and yellow mustard) make extra, use to marinade chicken, in slaw, meatloaf, or ham.)
Instructions
Cut two 3” x 5” pie crust dough rectangles and place on baking sheet
Egg wash the pie crust dough edges
Spread apple pie filling down middle of rectangle, then bacon jam, place hot dog in middle
Cover with second 3” x 5” pie crust dough (stretch it)
Crimp edges with a fork to seal (it will stick out a little on one end)
Egg wash top of Apple Pie Hot Dog
Sprinkle with apple pie spice and sugar
Bake in over at 350 for 18-20 minutes until golden
Remove from oven, drizzle with apple mustard and top with crumbled bacon. If you aren’t a huge fan of mustard, you can just use a little for taste. The touch of spice balances all the sweetness. It’s so easy to burn the edges and get soggy bottom, so bake with care.

A Lake Jackson man recovered from a rare, flesh-eating bacteria that he caught in his right hand over the Memorial Day weekend. It is called Vibrio Vulnificus. He had been surf fishing near the free beach at Surfside. That’s pretty bad, isn’t it? Well, not as bad as deciding to go fishing again, in the same area, only to find that he had it again, in his left hand. He underwent two surgeries, but still isn’t sure how he contracted the bacteria since he didn’t have any cuts or open wounds. Galveston County Health Department has reported only cases in of Vibrio in 2021, one in Crystal Beach and the other was food-related. Hmmm. Stephen King said, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, shame on both of us.” Sir, stay out of the water, it’s not safe.

Have a great weekend. Thanks for reading us. I will leave you with the little thought that Connie sent me. If I have to stir it, then it’s homemade. Yes, indeed.

What I Heard This Week! 02-13-2020

What I Heard This Week February 13, 2020

Dear Houston Chronicle: Here I am again, letting you know that my newspaper has only been delivered ONCE this week even though I pay for daily delivery. When I call you or email you each week for our sweet chats, you always assure me that someone will deliver back issues of all the ones that I didn’t receive…I’m expecting a truckload to be delivered at any moment so be sure to park in front of my office so you won’t have to walk so far to bring them to me. If I can’t have my back copies, could I please have a credit for all the papers that haven’t been delivered as you promised. I haven’t received a single credit that you promised I would receive. This has been going on for three months now. Can someone please speak to the carrier that is supposed to deliver to downtown Lake Jackson businesses? What exactly can be done to get my paper delivered? If we can’t work this out, then please discontinue my delivery and refund the payment that I’ve made to have your paper delivered thru the end of February. Oops. Wait. I forgot. You’ve already discontinued my delivery. What was I thinking!?!?!

Coca-Cola’s first new brand in more than a decade arrives in March. It’s called Aha and is caffeinated, favored sparkling water. Nabisco has two new Oreo flavors, Caramel Coconut and Chocolate Marshmallow.

Olivia Jade Giannulli, daughter of Lori Loughlin and Mossino Giannulli (college-admission scandal), has now had her glorified resume made public after being released in a court filing.  The resume states that Giannulli was “highly talented” and “successful” in both women’s and men’s boats and claimed that she participated in prestigious races like the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. In real life, she did not participate in crew while in high school. It also states that she achieved many gold, silver and bronze medals for her rowing achievements. Really. What kind of a parent does this?

The forest was shrinking but the trees kept voting for the axe as its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them. Old Turkish Proverb

Scientists have succeeded in creating two embryos of the near-extinct northern white rhino as part of an international effort to save the species which is down to two – both females. Eggs were taken from the females and frozen sperm from dead males and will be transferred into a surrogate mother, a southern white rhino, soon.

Money isn’t always going to behave in ways you can predict.Suze Orman

There was an article about the 10 best household products of 2019 and the first recommendation on the list was a lobster-rope doormat. Wait, I have one at my front door. Several companies make them, but I think I ordered mine on-sale from L.L. Bean. I had admired the ones my next-door neighbors have at their front door. If you’re a fan of mass-produced rubber mats or the bristle coconut fiber ones that cause you to drag in more stuff to your house than you had on your shoes to begin with, then this is not the mat for you. The one I bought is now a little more than a year old and looks brand-new. You just wash it down with the water hose and give it a shake.

“I’m not trying to sell you me. I’m trying to sell you you.”Singer Lizzo, on her message of body positivity and self-love.

A three-year-old cancer patient got her wish of eating at J. Wilson’s in Beaumont. When the restaurant heard that Adelaide Stanley couldn’t go out in public because of a weakened immune system, they opened early, decorated in her favorite color, pink, made her favorite food, biscuits, then covered the cost of the meal. Lots of good in the world.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing is 94. Comedian Tom Smothers is 83. Rock singer guitarist Graham Nash is 78. Television exec Barry Diller is 78. Tinder, okCupid, Match.com, Expedia, Cheers, The Simpsons.  Rock musician Ross Valory is 71. Journey. Model Christie Brinkley is 66. (She really makes it hard on the rest of us girls.) Actor Stuart Whitman is 92. Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. Lisa Marie Presley is 52.

Singer Harry Styles is 26. One Direction. Actress Mamie Van Doren is 89. Actor Mike Farrell is 81.  NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw is 80. Singer Fabian is 77. Rock singer Axl Rose is 58. Guns N’ Roses. Composer conductor John Williams is 88. Newscaster Ted Koppel is 80. Professional surfer Bethany Hamilton is 30. Actor Jerry Adler is 91. Former Argentinian President Isabel Peron is 89. Rock singer Alice Cooper is 72. Olympic gold medal boxer Oscar De La Hoya is 47.

Texas is now 183 years old. Horned lizards are the official reptiles of Texas. The lighting whelk is the state shell and the prickly pear is the state plant. The state flower is the bluebonnet, the state fish is the Guadalupe bass and the state bird is the northern mockingbird. Three state mammals include the longhorn, armadillo and Mexican free-tailed bat.  According to Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine, the state cooking implement is the Dutch oven, the state dish is chili and the state snack is chips and salsa. Official state foods include the 1015 sweet onion, red grapefruit and chiltepin pepper. Well, what the heck is a Chiltepin pepper? It seems that the Chiltepin (capsicum annuum) ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 Scoville heat units on the pepper scale, with the chance for a bit hotter if a crop had an ideally wet growing season. This makes it equal with Thai peppers in terms of overall heat and about 23 times spicier than your standard jalapeño. It’s a tiny little pepper. I think I’ll just stick to jalapeños.

Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott launched a quarterly lifestyle magazine called Reveal. It’s not just home design tips and tricks, but inspiration and simple steps to get the most out of life, along with delicious recipes, travel destinations and tours of the most beautiful homes. Lizzo’s RodeoHouston show sold out in just a matter of minutes. Princess Beatrice will marry on May 29 in the Chapel Royal of St. James’s Palace. Beatrice is the elder daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

New movie sequels for 2020 are Top Gun: Maverick, with Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Jennifer Connelly, arriving June 26. Bill & Ted Face the Music, with Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter due out on August 21st. Then my personal favorite: Legally Blonde 3 with Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, due out on May 8th.

Texas is among the 21 states where it is lawful to decline hiring individuals who use nicotine products.

Climate Change: Because of drenched fields across the U.S., there is a shortage of soft winter wheat which is used in flour for snacks…crackers, biscuits, Oreo’s, Cheez-Its.

If you have ever wanted to ride on a float in a Mardi Gras parade, now is your opportunity. For $175, you can ride on a float, then party like a VIP at a balcony party with your friends and family. They provide the beads, driver and parade insurance. You just bring your ID, cash and a crowd with you. Reservations needed.   MardiGrasGalveston.com

Siba, a standard poodle, is the new Westminster Dog Show’s top winner. She is beautiful and immediately reminded me of Cher at the 1986 Oscars where she had the towering black feather headdress designed by Bob Mackie. Look up Siba, then look up Cher 1986 dress, then tell me what you think…

Coronavirus War: COVID-19 (new name). It’s affecting the manufacturing of the iPhone in China. Pets are being abandoned by their owners due to fears that their animals can carry the virus. Some thrown from balconies several stories high. Reports are now saying that health care workers were infected as early as early January, but China did not disclose this information. A Chinese citizen journalist who had been reporting on the virus is now missing after posting videos of corpses and hospitals. The Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Japan now has a total of 175 confirmed cases (as of 02-12) and workers on the ship are pleading for help because they are forced to work and interact with potentially infected passengers with no protection for themselves. Hmmm.

There were a few things I needed to pick up at Target, which ended up being a basketful. When I got to the checkout, there were no real people checking, just four self-checks and a super long line. So, I waited my turn, thinking that the one person watching us could have been checking too. Sigh. McDonald’s has purchased voice-recognition technology so you will eventually have a machine taking your order then relaying that information to their kitchen staff. This is ‘supposed’ to speed up the process. This in turn will boost sales. Hmmm. I hope that this same service can learn to count change since no one seems to know how anymore. It’s official, I’m not only old, I’m grumpy, too.

Sometimes I shock myself with the smart stuff I say and do. Then, there are times when I try to get out of the car with my seatbelt on. Facebook

Former “Empire” star Jussie Smollett has been indicted by a grand jury on six counts for making false reports in connection with the actor’s claim a year ago that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack near his Chicago apartment. Police concluded Smollett orchestrated the attack himself to boost his publicity and paid two acquaintances to help him. Initially, he was indicted on 16 counts of felony disorderly conduct, but charges were dropped.  New charges have come after a special prosecutor was asked to investigate how the case was originally handled. Smollett’s attorney says the new charges are “all about politics, not justice.”

Watson Grinding & Manufacturing and Watson Valve Services have filed for bankruptcy.

Pete Rose has a lot to say about the Astros cheating scandal. In 1989, Rose was banned by the MLB for gambling on games in which he played and managed on the Cincinnati Reds. He is now wondering why only managers and coaches are getting punished in the most recent cheating scandal. “The guys that are getting the sign from the bench, from the coaches, they’re cheating more than the guys who gave the signals.” Rose said. “When you screw around, the integrity of baseball is going to come down hard on you. They came down hard on me. They came down hard on them.” Now Rose is again petitioning MLB for reinstatement.

It’s Valentine’s Day and I am stumped as to what I should or can say to my two young adults. You know, nothing mushy. Well, scratch that. I really need to tell them that they’ll never really know true love until they hold their own child in their arms. I want to tell them that no matter what they do or tell me, I will always love them, I just may not like them very much, but real love is unconditional. I want to say that it tickles me when I hear my words come out of their mouths, so therefore I am very careful about the words I use. I want to tell them to not forget to fall in love but be careful of who they love. I am so proud that the two of you radiate quiet acceptance, patience and love to most anyone you meet, yet both of you are approaching adult life like hurricane-force winds. I just couldn’t be any prouder of you two. Happy Valentine’s Day. Love Mom.

What I Heard This Week! 12-19-2019

What I Heard This Week December 19, 2019

In March, NASA discovered that they didn’t have space suits that would fit their female astronauts for use outside the International Space Station. Hmmm. Since then, they have corrected their mistake and female astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir were able to fix a malfunctioning battery charger on the exterior of the space station in what is called the first all-female spacewalk. That’s crazy. Barbie has had her own space suit for as long as I can remember. The first Barbie astronaut outfit, “Barbie Miss Astronaut,” was released in 1965, two years after Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the world’s first woman to fly into space and 18 years before an American woman, Sally Ride, would follow her.

Santa has been reading your posts all year long. Most of you will be getting dictionaries this year.

The troubled Toys ‘R’ Us is planning to open 10 new stores after going into liquidation more than a year ago. The new stores have kid-height shelves in specialty spaces with about 1,500 items that will be available on site, a treehouse and a movie theatre. Bet Santa was happy to hear this.

I am so angry. That’s not showing consideration for us. It’s like they don’t care if we die.” – Houston resident Leisa Glenn, after finding out a state study that revealed a cancer cluster in her neighborhood was not disclosed to residents for nearly four months.

A ‘cancer cluster’ is a geographic area with a statistically higher than average occurrence of cancer among its residents. Historical examples of work-related cancer clusters are well documented in medical literature. Scrotal cancer among chimney sweeps in 18th century London; osteosarcoma among female watch dial painters in the 20th century; skin cancer in farmers; bladder cancer in dye workers exposed to aniline compounds, and leukemia & lymphoma in chemical workers exposed to benzene.

Comcast/Xfinity customers will see their bill rise 3.6 percent nationwide starting next week. Some programing costs will rise along with an increase to rent their equipment (which none of us want anyway, but is there a choice?)

Climate change is real and allowing for some interesting discoveries. Because of the melting permafrost, more and more parts of woolly mammoths, canines and other prehistoric animals are being discovered in Russia’s Far East. Most recently, scientists found an unusually well-preserved puppy believed to be 18,000 years old. It still had all its limbs, fur, teeth, whiskers, eyelashes – even whiskers. I saw a picture and you could even see its little black nose. Amazing. Right now, they are finishing some extensive testing to determine whether it’s a dog or a wolf pup.

Kroger has an ad that says: “The Freshest turkey that won’t cost you a wing and a drumstick”.” Cute.

My sweet office co-workers bought me a 6-pack of unusual artisan beers for Boss’s Day in October.  I had saved them in my outside refrigerator so the kids and I could do our little beer tastings when they came home from school.  On Friday night, Gage brought in a bottle with a smooth, very attractive, non-paper label and a picture of a Halloween pumpkin holding a cellphone and a coffee cup; a Prairie Ale called Basic Becky. We poured it into our glasses, smelled it and then smelled it again. What the heck were we smelling?!? A couple of sips and we were sold, but we still couldn’t figure out what the dominant smell and taste were. When all else fails, read the label. Imperial Stout with pumpkin, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, coriander, clove and caraway. I think that sums up why we couldn’t figure out what we were tasting and smelling. It was like drinking Thanksgiving, but SO much better.

Frank Sinatra,  born on December 12, 1915, was one of the best-selling music artists of all time and sold more than 150 million records. He would be 104, just one year older than Kirk Douglas.

Danny Aiello, a New York-born stage actor who was 40 when he made his movie debut, died at 86. He was so good as Cher’s kind and clueless fiancé in Moonstruck (1987).

The former Boston College baseball player whose public battle with ALS inspired the popularity of the ice bucket challenge, died at the age of 34. He was diagnosed in 2012 and at that time, the “science was getting exciting but there was no funding” for this disease with no cure. But five years after he started the challenge (which raised over $220 million in just weeks) scientists are now much more optimistic about finding a cure.

You missed a great show at The Clarion this last weekend. Colbie Caillat and her new band, Gone West, which includes her husband Justin, her co-writer, Jason Reeves and his wife, Nelly Joy, definitely entertained the crowd. Their new music is called modern country and it’s working for them.

Which is healthier, a slice of apple pie or pumpkin pie? Apple pie tends to have a top crust and more crust means more calories, as well as saturated fat from butter or shortening, plus the sugar. Answer: pumpkin. Which is better for you, a white potato or a sweet potato?  A 4-ounce sweet potato provides 13 percent of daily fiber needs and your recommended dose of vitamin A. Skip the marshmallow topping on Christmas Day and the answer is sweet potato.

Did you know that in 1972, the FBI hired its first two female agents, a former nun and a former US marine? DID I RUN THIS BEFORE?

A camel, cow and donkey were found roaming together along a Kansas road. (Sounds more like Jerusalem) Local police asked for help in locating the owners of the “three friends traveling together (towards a Northern star).” Now, Sully the camel, Gus the donkey and Rufus the cow will appear in a Christmas Nativity scene at the same wildlife park that they escaped from last month. Great story. Sweet picture.

Not too much sets me off but, why in the world would anyone dump grease and/or oil next to my gardens in the alley behind my office? And while I’m on it, DO NOT dump your trash in business dumpsters and trashcans. We pay a fortune for city service. I watch you do it ALL THE TIME. I even have pictures of your cars and plates. If you don’t work here, then put it out at your own home or the dump.

Movies coming outLittle Women: the beloved story of the four March sisters, Oscar nod, men – hang up your macho and buy a ticket.  Cats: the music alone should be fabulous.  Bombshell: focuses on the group of women who took on former Fox News chief Roger Ailes over issues of sexual harassment – Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, John Lithgow as Ailes, and Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly. It’s getting an Oscar nod. Jumanji: The Next Level, Richard Jewell, Knives Out, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Two Popes, Spies in Disguise…and many more…these are just the ones I want to see.

My daughter asked me about the love/hate relationship that most people have with fruitcake. Do you mean the tasteless bricks or the edible treats? Needless to say, I didn’t have a very good answer for her. Many years ago, I remember passing an aging fruitcake back and forth to my friend Barbara. It was a joke and each of us knew what we would be giving or receiving for Christmas those years. I have some inflatable fruitcakes in my closet to give for Christmas gifts this year. (I have an inflatable turkey, too.) I mentioned to my daughter that even a bad fruitcake is good with a nice rum bath. Then I looked it up…the name “fruitcake” can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages when dried fruits and nuts were luxuries, mainly reserved for holidays since it was considered a sign of wealth. The following is a 5-star ‘World’s Best Fruitcake Recipe.’  After all, your Christmas may need a little fruitcake – even if you already have one in your family.

14 ounces sweetened flaked coconut

8 ounces chopped sugar rolled dates

16 ounces chopped pecan pieces

8 ounces candied cherries

8 ounces diced candied pineapple

2 (14 ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk

Preheat oven 300 degrees. Place coconut, dates, and pecan pieces in a very large (7 quart or larger) bowl. Break up chunks of dates & coconut and stir together. Add the cherries, pineapple, and sweetened condensed milk and mix together with your hands. Wear disposable gloves. It will be a very stiff mixture. Let it set at room temperature while you prepare the pans.

Spray 2 – 9″x5″ loaf pans with Pam. Line the pans with waxed (or parchment) paper. Cut parchment paper in 4 1/4″x 16 1/4″ and 8″x 12 1/2″ strips for this. You want the paper to come up past the sides of the pans after the mixture is packed into the pans. It’s a little work, but worth the effort. Now spray the paper that you pressed into the pans, with Pam or vegetable cooking spray.

Stir the ingredients well again and divide ingredients between the 2 loaf pans. Pack TIGHTLY and smooth into the pans. Wet your hands to keep them from sticking to the batter then press and pack down, smooth. Place the pans on the middle rack of the oven and bake 1 hour, or until lightly browned. (If the cakes have baked for an hour, or look a little brown around the edges, take them out of the oven & lift edges of paper a little to see if sides look brown enough. If they’re brown on sides, but not on top, you may broil the tops for a few minutes but watch carefully.)

Remove and cool for just 10 minutes in the pans. Gently lift the edges of the paper a couple of times on each side – kind of a rocking motion. Turn pans upside down onto a paper-lined cookie sheet and lift pans from the cakes. Remove paper from bottom of cakes IMMEDIATELY. Let cool completely. Place in a large container (don’t wrap yet) and refrigerate overnight. Next day, turn cake upside down to slice. After slicing, wrap in waxed (or parchment) paper, then in heavy duty aluminum foil. May be refrigerated up to 3 months or frozen up to 1 year.

Have you ever wondered what PAM (the vegetable cooking spray) stands for? Me neither. PAM is an acronym for Product of Arthur Meyerhoff, the man who marketed the spray in 1961.

Friends, neighbors, readers and advertisers…have a great CHRISTmas.

What I Heard This Week! 05-02-2019

What I Heard This Week May 1, 2019

At the Source Weekly, we have a carrier that has spent a dedicated twenty-years with us. He only missed delivering his papers a couple of times in those twenty-years, but now he is unable to deliver, so I have been doing his route for the past few months. It really messes up my working schedule because when I miss a day of my regular work chores, Imust make it up somewhere else in the week. But, before you start thinking that I’m whining (well, maybe I was whining just a little,) I want you to know that while delivering papers, I have met some of the nicest people in Brazoria County (the route starts in LJ, goes to Brazoria, Sargent then back to Churchill)and I have heard some wonderful stories. Stories about the carrier they had for the past twenty years. How he would bring back dry papers when it rained, conversations about his kindness and inquiries about his health.  (Thank you,Mr. Boyd for your phone call.)Don’t you hope that someone misses you when you ‘give up your route’? I have also heard such nice tales of life. (Thank you,Mr. Little.)A couple of weeks ago, I met Gene, Richard and Buck at the Diamond S in Brazoria. I asked them a little bit about themselves; they laughed, and said they meet everydaytosolve theproblems of the world. They even shared homemade muffins with me. I left there that morning thinking to myself, “I just ate food that a stranger gave me. My mother would not understand.” Then I remembered that I was in Brazoria, Texas, where there are no strangers. Some days are just more special than others. Ms. Tina has come to work with us and was kind enough to take over thedelivery route. You’re going to love her.(Thank you,Mr. Moses for lovely conversation each week.)

On the other hand: What I didn’t tell you is that there are also some real #%#’$ in the world. As I delivered the papers, I had some people treat me like I was dirt under their feet. I told one guy that his ‘Closed, Be Back in the Morning’ sign was still out on his front door and he replied, “Well, you can switch it around on your way out.” There was no thank you. No nothing. He was too busy to look up from his cellphone. I just wonder if anyone will miss him when he ‘gives up his route’ in life.

While we are on this subject, while delivering the papers I wandered around. I purchased yard eggs from one gentleman. Our county has a lot to offer, likeReifel’s Feed Store in Brazoriawhere they have chickens, chicken coops and a great selection of vegetable starter plants. Wonderful variety. I have been gardening for quite a few years, but there were peppers I had never heard of, so many varieties of tomatoes and three different kinds of lavender. If you garden, then take a few extra minutes and drive to Brazoria. It’s just a bitfurther down the road and a nice drive. Be sure to stop at The Depot and The Rustic Rose for a little bit of shopping and if happen to need a copy of The Source Weekly while you are there, we drop 650 copies at Stewart’s Grocery each week.

Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility of the future. John F. Kennedy

Four years ago, a man dropped his 5-year-old daughter off a bridge to her death. His lawyers argued that he was insane, but a jury deliberated for only seven hours before finding the man guilty of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to life in prison. It was believed that he did this because he wanted to keep his daughter away from her mother and grandmother. Hmmm.

In Ohio, an unruly customerlaid down in a restaurant booth, then threw a menu at the waitress.  As the manager approached, he pulled a 2-ft. long iguana from under his shirt, swung it aroundthen threw it at the manager. It missed but landed on the floor where the suspect picked it up and left. Police were called and the suspect was apprehended a few blocks away. The lizard suffered a broken leg. Sigh.

Dan Robbins, an artist who created the first paint-by-numbers pictures and helped turn the kits into an American sensation during the 1950s, died at 93. He was working at Palmer Paint, a company in Ohio selling children’s paint sets, when his boss asked him to do an adultpaint kit. He had read that da Vinci used numbered background patterns in his work, so he based his idea on that. Most of the kits were landscapes but included other designs such as ballerinas and kittens. The kits were a sensation in the mid-1950’s but competitors saturated the market and sales greatly decreased. Robbins continued his career in product development, designing happy meal toys for McDonalds. Early on, his paint-by-number works were dismissed by some critics but later celebrated by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

Georgia Engel, an actress best-known for playing Georgette Franklin Baxter on the ground-breaking sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show died at 70.  She was nominated twice for Emmys for her portrayal of Mary’s sweetly simple friend Georgette, who married the pompous anchorman Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight. Other notable roles included Pat MacDougall on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” for which she was nominated for another three Emmy awards. Her last recurring role was alongside fellow “Mary Tyler Moore Show” alum Betty White in “Hot in Cleveland.”

According to NPR, 4 in 5 parents want schools to teach climate change, but most classrooms do not teach currently. I’ve got it! Teach them at home by the way you live. 1.)  Switch off lights. 2.)  Switch to LED’s.  3.)  Set your computer to turn off when not in use and tone down your brightness. 4).  Do full loads of clothes. 5.)  Carpool. 6.)  Try renewable energy by switching your utility company or solar panels. 7.)  Programmable thermostats. 8.)  Conserve water. 9.)  Eat less meat and more veggies. 10.)  Always avoid processed foods. 11.)  Eat organic whenever possible. 12.)  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle 13.)  Stop junk mail. If you live in U.S., you can register with DirectMail to get your name removed from lists used by the industry. 14.)  Put your car up and walk. 15.)  Fuel efficient vehicles. 16.)  Get the people around you involved. Yes, some of these are small things but if everyone did one…it wouldn’t be small.

The new HISD principal at James Madison High School, Carlotta Outley Brown, will turn away parents if they do not abide by the new “Dress Code.” She said, “Parents, we do value you as a partner in your child’s education. However, please know we have to have standards, most of all we must have high standards.” I read the print-out she wrote and pulled this information…”no satin caps, bonnets or shower caps, no pajamas, no hair rollers, no jeans torn from the buttocks, no leggings that show your front or behind, no very low cut tops showing your breasts, no sagging pants, shorts, or jeans, no undershirts on men, no short shorts, no Daisy Dukes or low rider shorts, and no dresses up to your behind.” So far, Ms. Brown (who also happens to be a graduate of Madison High School) has received support from some, but a parent said, “The guidelines codify deeper issues tied to race, class and gender.”  I say go for it; every school should have dress codes for the parents. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to sit next to parents that should never have been allowed on school property. I was not only embarrassed for them but far more embarrassed for their children. As adults, we need to set better examples in life if we expect to see change. Especially for our children. In Tennessee, state officials have sponsored a bill that would require all schools to adopt a parent code of conduct, which would include how parents dress. They said, “What could be a higher priority than bringing your child to school? You wouldn’t go to a date like that.

I hate this. Someone stacked and burned several bee hives at the Brazoria County Beekeepers Association bee farm in Alvin, and may have killed as many as 600,000 honey bees. Anyone with information about this crime can call the Brazoria County Sheriff’s at 979-849-2441 or to remain anonymous, contact Brazoria County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-460-2222 or Brazoria-CountyCrimeStoppers.com. Remember, the more details that you give them, the faster they can make an arrest and the better your chances are of receiving a reward! And in addition, The Beekeepers Association is now offering $1,000 reward for information. Spread the word. People need to be held accountable to the full extent of the law for stupidity, brainlessness, hatred and pure evilness.  What exactly did the bees do to them. We need our bees. Without them to pollinate, we won’t have food.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.” Albert Einstein.

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke announced, from a beautiful location in Yosemite National Park, a move he hopes will make a difference. O’Rourke promised to sign climate change-fighting executive orders on the first day of his presidency, including rejoining the 2016 Paris Agreement, which the US has withdrawn from. According to the United Nations, “The Paris Agreement…  brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with enhanced support to assist developing countries to do so. As such, it charts a new course in the global climate effort. The Paris Agreement central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”

If you are reading this on May 2, then it is National Day of Prayer where Americans are encouraged to give thanks and turn to prayer and peaceful meditation. Pause for a moment. Our world needs it. If it’s not May 2, then you could do it anyway. Just a thought. Lisa

What I Heard This Week! April 18, 2019

What I Heard This Week April 18, 2019

Yikes. The headline says, ‘Lori Loughlin pleads not guilty in college cheating scandal.’ What? I’m on the outside looking in, but it would sure seem to me that she is digging a crater for her and her husband. Instead, to be able to come out and say that she has made a huge mistake would be the very best example that she could set for her daughters who obviously need a good role model right now. I see harsh sentencing. Are they just getting horrible legal advice? (Maybe she is actually, seriously ill, with a case of “Affluenza.”) On the other hand, Felicity Huffman and 12 other parents have agreed to plead guilty. I bet they get a slap on the hand and a fine. Community service hours would be the best sentencing for all of them. Humbling, especially if it was working with kids trying to get into college, working two jobs with no car.

If you see a rabbit laying little brown eggs, don’t eat them. It’s not chocolate.

Happy 70th Anniversary to Wallace and Margaret Schlemmer. You have done what most people only wish and pray for. And you’ve done it for 70 years. Wow!

Tiger Woods, age 43, did it again by winning his fifth Masters tournament and a new green jacket; his first since 2005. (He also won $2.05 million, the standard 18% of the total pot, but I’m sure that it wasn’t very important to him…wink, wink.) Woods won his first Masters title at age 21. Rumor has it that this could be considered the greatest career comeback in the history of golf. Woods seems to be a touch more humbled, recently. Well, he needed to be, because he did a lot of damage to his family and his reputation before ‘getting it all together.’ President Trump is so impressed that he says he will be presenting him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Huh?!? I guess I was under the impression that those awards were given to people that discover amazing things in medicine or someone that saves the lives of hundreds of orphans or something like that. Not always. In 2016 honorees from the sports world included basketball players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan, along with veteran sports broadcaster Vin Scully. Entertainers included Ellen DeGeneres, Diana Ross, Tom Hanks, Robert Redford and Bruce Springsteen. Color me wrong.

Notre-Dame Cathedral sits on an island in the River Seine and marks the very center of Paris. It is one of France’s most visited places, with more than 12-million visitors per year – nearly double the people who visit the Eiffel Tower. No one was injured when a fire broke out there this week engulfing the spire, which collapsed followed by most of the roof. As of 04/17, nearly $1 billion has been promised from both rich & poor worshippers, small towns around the world, the parent companies of Louis Vuitton, Sephora, Gucci, Apple, L’Oréal, Chanel, and Dior, in order to help rebuild. Some of the most prized, centuries-old relics of France and Christianity, including the replica of The Crown of Thorns, which Jesus is said to have worn during his crucifixion by the Romans, were among the treasures that survived. It gives me shivers thinking about it, especially at Easter time.

Climate change is the most important story of our time. As caretakers of our Earth, we need to make better decisions. Yes, it’s overwhelming, but unless we start today, nothing is going to change, except to get worse. You have all experienced the changes, but what you do about it as an individual, really matters. Demand change from others. Reduce your waste. Use less energy. Talk to your friends and family. Pay more attention to what you buy and what you eat. How you travel. Stay informed and do your part to make this a better place than you found it. Earth Day is April 22.  Plant a tree. Pick up trash. Make a difference.

Easter tells us that life is to be interpreted not simply in terms of things but in terms of ideals.  C.M. Crowe

April the 18th is International Juggler’s Day. On this occasion, I celebrate the people that work with me at The Source Weekly because they are the best jugglers ever; people that can multi-task like nobody’s business. Thank you to each and every one of them for making sure that this office works the best it can, each and every day!

Why do we have eyebrows? Do you know? Me neither, but when I spent more than a minute thinking about it, I figured I needed to know because I invest a lot of money to make it look like I have two of them. According to Mental Floss, “Eyebrows are the Swiss Army Knife of the human body – they do everything! First and foremost, they protect your eyes. The shape of the brow ridge and the brows themselves channel sweat, rain, and moisture away from the eyeballs so your vision stays clear. Second, they’re essential for nonverbal communication.” So, this tells me that if a good rainstorm comes, I’ll probably drown.

Question: What do you call ten rabbits marching backwards? Answer: A receding hareline.

Jamie Adams, a former Wall Street trader who opened Saint James Brewery in Long Island nearly two decades ago, says he and fellow divers salvaged bottles of beer from the SS Oregon, a luxury liner sailing from Liverpool to New York that sank off Fire Island in 1886. With this beer, they extracted the yeast, then spent the next two years brewing test batches to get just the right taste. Adams believes the yeast from the sunken ship is descended from the lineage used by Bass Brewers in England to make a brand called King’s Ale, which is no longer produced. The new beer has a slightly fruity taste with a hoppy finish and is a replication of what would have been served on that ship in 1886. The taste is also described as absolutely fantastic.

April the giraffe (remember her live stream) has given birth again and it’s a very tall boy. Almost two years after her last countdown that captivated us all, April welcomed her 5’11” calf to Animal Adventure Park in NY. His name is Azizi (Ah-Zee-Zee) which means “beloved precious; mighty.”

In Huffman, Texas, George Foreman’s garage caught fire and is believed to be the fault of a golf cart among the forty cars in the garage. Forty cars? That’s not a garage, that’s a bus terminal. Yikes.

Bend, Oregon will be home to the only Blockbuster Video store left standing after more than 9,000 of them closing since 2004.

Andrew Francis Lippi, 59, had just closed on an $8 million island called Thompson Island, off Key West, when he was arrested for returning several items that he had purchased at Kmart. It seems that he bought several boxed items including a Keurig coffeemaker and light bulbs, then returned the original boxes for refunds, aaahhh, but the boxes were stuffed with other items including a basketball. He had many smart remarks including, “The clerk should have known there was no coffeemaker inside the box because of the weight.” Hmmm.

Bugatti just unveiled the most expensive new car ever built. The French luxury sports car brand started showing off the Bugatti La Voiture Noire, which has a price tag of nearly $19 million USD. No, you can’t have one. They only built one and it has been sold to a mystery buyer, believed to be the former chairman of Volkswagen Group. Just my luck. Day late and dollar short. In this case, $19 million short.

Burger King is introducing the Impossible Whopper at 59 restaurants in the St. Louis area. This is a meatless patty that uses heme, an iron-rich protein that is believed to taste like beef. The heme is blended with a combination of other vegetarian ingredients that give it about the same amount of protein as the regular Whopper, with 15% less fat and 90% less cholesterol. Hmmm. I don’t eat much meat but when I do, I want a good juicy steak.

More than 500 cases of measles have been reported in NY, 332 of them since January with more than 40 new cases just last week. The health commissioner for Rockland County, NY, announced, “Anyone who is unvaccinated, has a laboratory-confirmed case of measles, has been identified by a health investigation as being exposed to measles and is under age 18 will be issued an order to essentially stay at home for up to 21 days depending on when they were exposed and when the county learns of the exposure.” Ruppert said that children must have proof of vaccination, immunity or an exemption form on file at schools and childcare facilities in order to attend. Parents and guardians are responsible for minors, and failure to comply is $2,000 per day. It’s the 29th week of fighting the measles outbreak – the longest lasting current outbreak in the entire nation and the largest outbreak in NY State in 30 years.

A 61-year-old Nebraska woman served as a surrogate mother for her son, Matthew, and his husband, Elliot, who married in 2015 and wanted to start a family. Matthew’s mom was approved as a surrogate after extensive screening, then Elliot’s sister stepped up as the egg donor and Matthew was the sperm donor. Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge weighed in at 5lbs. 13oz. Tough question:  Would you do this for your children? Being a parent has definitely been the most important part of my life, so yes, I guess so.

The odds of having sextuplets are estimated at one in 4.7 billion. A Houston woman gave birth to six babies at Women’s Hospital of Texas last month. Two sets of twin boys and one set of twin girls weighed from one lb. 12 oz. to two lb. 14 oz.

Thanks to Angela Garrett at Brazosport College for her help and to Mike at Reece Supply for ordering all the necessary foam board for all those kids at UH. It was appreciated. April 18th is Newspaper Columnist Day. Woohoo.  (I’ll celebrate anything!) Dear Easter Bunny, please fill my eggs with health and happiness and deliver them to everyone that I love.

Have a safe Easter. Lisa

Much Ado About Nothing – What I Don’t Understand

Much Ado About Nothing March 8, 2018

Much Ado by Jean Ciampi

Did you know that 48.8% of Millennials felt climate change was the most critical issue facing our world today and that 78.1% said they’d be willing to change their lifestyle to protect the environment? I do my part and recycle and stuff, but I’m going to let younger, more energetic minds worry about the big issues, and I’ll worry about things like, why do cows all point the same direction when they stand together in a field? Maybe it’s part of climate change.

After you find the answer to that one, can someone please tell me why several days of sub-freezing weather only kills vegetation that has been paid for? If I paid good money for something in my flowerbed, it’s dead. Frozen, mushy, brown and dead. But the weeds come back energized and heartier than ever after their winter cryo-therapy. Why? If I bought weeds, would they die? Could I shred up some dollar bills for mulch for a better effect than wasting those same dollars on weed control and Round-Up®? Wouldn’t that be environmentally more responsible than applying all those chemicals anyway?!

Here’s another good question that maybe anyone can field: What’s an Instant Pot? Is it not cool to just have a Crock-Pot® anymore? Or is an Instant Pot just a Crock-Pot on crack? Maybe it should just be called a Crack-Pot. In so very many ways, I think that might fit.

I realize I could just ask Alexa or Siri or whoever the unseen-but-all-hearing entity is that lives inside the electronics that seem to have invaded my life. Except I don’t understand those either. To be honest, I’m still utterly fascinated at the magic of radio waves. My television screen had a message telling me to speak my request into my remote control. There was a time when doing things like that would get you a one-way trip to the booby hatch, so I’m not sure I’m completely comfortable with that quite yet.

Oh yeah, and can someone tell me why a good pair of scissors comes in a package that can only be opened with a good pair of scissors? Not to state the obvious, but if I had a good pair of scissors to open the package, I wouldn’t, well, need to open the package.

You see, Millennials, why I leave it to you to fix the big things.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
