What I Heard This Week 06-30-2022

What I Heard This Week June 29, 2022

RETRACTION: Please forgive me. I have such a difficult time with presidents and astronauts.  Last week I was trying to explain in one paragraph, simple terms, the difference between a Bear (down market) and a Bull (up market). I also listed the past three Bear markets, the years that they happened, and the presidents that were in office at that time. I said, “So far this century we have had a bear market in 2000-2002 (Clinton & Bush), in 2008-2009 (Bush), and in 2011 (Clinton).”  Well, I must have lost my place while I was typing because I got a president wrong.  Bill Clinton was president from January 20, 1993, to January 20, 2001, and George Bush was president from January 20, 2001, to January 20, 2009, so the 2000-2002 and the 2008-2009 were correct. But in 2011, Bill Clinton was not president, Barack Obama was president from January 20, 2009, to January 20, 2017.  Thank you to the person that found this erroneous blunder and sent us such a nice message. Here you go.

A 66-year-old father from Scotland was told he couldn’t donate blood this time, which he had been doing since he was 18-years-old, almost 50 years. He had actually donated over 125 pints of blood. Why you ask, did they tell him he couldn’t donate blood after all that time? The form he was told to fill out asked if he was expecting a child or had been pregnant in the previous six months. He explained to the staff that the question did not apply to him because it was impossible, and the staff told him he had to fill it out anyway. “I told them that was stupid and that if I had to leave, I wouldn’t be back,” the man said. “And that was it, I got on my bike and cycled away.”

Cooking Hint: When a cake sticks to the bottom of a springform pan, just slide a piece of unflavored floss under the cake and gently saw it free. This way you don’t scratch the pan with a metal spatula.

A 62-year-old California man was attacked by what is now considered to be one of the biggest great white sharks in the world, according to the bite marks which estimated it to be about 20 feet long.  The shark viciously attacked his leg, stomach, and arms. Two paddleboarders and a surfer rushed to his aid, laying him on their largest board, and then back to shore for medical help. They knew it wasn’t a prank when they heard the yelling of “shark” because of all the blood in the water. The world’s largest known great white shark is Deep Blue, which is 20 feet long, weighs over 5,500 pounds and is thought to be over 50 years oldduunnn dunnn… duuuunnnn duun… duuunnnnnnnn dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn dunnnn (Jaws theme song in case you didn’t get it.) Shark Week 2022 starts July 24th on Discovery and discovery+. It is a perfect opportunity for us to learn more about these great creatures. Starting July 10th, SharkFest premieres on National Geographic, streams on Disney+.

If you don’t like me, you should get tested. One of the symptoms of Covid, is no taste.

As I flipped through my Costco magazine, I came to an article about sustainable and renewable coconut COIR products. I have mentioned using the ground-up outer husks of coconut shells in this column before. I have been using them in my garden for years. You buy them in bricks, float them in a bucket of water, and bingo… you have a bucket full of good stuff to work into your garden that helps retain moisture. Costco is now selling PlantBest MegaMulch expanding coconut coir in a 2-pack for $23.99, which covers up to 40 sq. ft if you use it as mulch. You just take a block, put it into your wheelbarrow, or directly on your garden bed and wet it. Within ten minutes, you’re ready to use it like soil or mulch. A plus for using coconut coir is that you’re not contributing to the environmental harm caused by peat harvesting, this product absorbs up to 6 times as much water as traditional peat moss and transforming coconut husk into soil and mulch, helps eliminate environmental waste and makes coconuts 100% sustainable. I just ordered some. Watering is expensive. If we want to continue to grow things, we are going to need to properly prepare our beds and soil, so it has the ability to retain water for longer.

And is now fighting his own stomach cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Ben Affleck’s 10-year-old son was at a LA luxury car dealership with his actor dad and Jennifer Lopez, when he received permission to get in the driver’s seat of a Lamborghini SUV ($230,000 estimated value), put the car in reverse and immediately backed into a BMW. Oops. Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison for helping Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse underage girls for at least a decade. Remember to report your in-home positive COVID testing to the county. I didn’t realize that we were supposed to do that. Fifty-one migrants from Mexico and Central America died in an abandoned tractor-trailer in San Antonio. What a horrible way to die!

We’re Back, Witches. Since 1993, we have been waiting for Hocus Pocus 2. It’s finally here and will be released on September 30th just in time for Halloween season. I must say, Hocus Pocus is one of my very favorite movies. Twenty-nine years after the events of Hocus Pocus (1993, has it really been that long?), three high-school students work together to stop the Sanderson sisters (Winnie, Sarah and Mary) aka Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker, who returned to present-day Salem.

It’s so much fun to cheer on all the rich guys as they race to space and take regular ordinary (and very rich) people with them…but there is such limited information on what the potential impact is to Earth and our precious, vulnerable atmosphere. According to the Earth’s Future journal, the more rockets that get launched, the more black soot is injected into the upper atmosphere, along with pollutants including nitrous oxide, aluminum oxide, hydrochloric acid, and chlorine, as well as water vapor and carbon dioxide. Together, all of that output not only contributes to global warming but also to the depletion of the ozone layer. Where we have never been before, we must go in with eyes wide open.

When you stop and think about how hot it is right now… be sure to remember this could be the coolest summer of the rest of your life. Scary thoughts, unfortunately we have to get used to it. In Minnesota, temperatures soared above 100 degrees, buckling streets and shattering car windows. Thousands of cattle perished in Kansas. Temperatures in France reached nearly 110°F and set or tied more than 200 monthly heat records across the country. A heat wave in the Pacific Northwest boiled hundreds of millions of marine creatures, and during a recent European heat wave, water temperatures in the Mediterranean were 9°F above average. Nine degrees. Wildfires, loss of lives, heatstroke, heat exhaustion, and testing of our electric grid systems are coming. We have filled our world up with concrete and asphalt which soaks up the hot and retains heat through the night. Much of the world’s infrastructure, policies, and planning is based on historical averages, but our new future will never look like the past.

This is Charles Barkley’s take on the PGA Tour players taking money to join the Greg Norman led LIV Golf series that is funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. “If somebody gave me $200 million, I’d kill a relative.” Hmmm.

Last weekend AE and I drove to Houston and dropped her off at a friend’s house, then I rushed to a nearby Costco to pick up paper towels and TP for the office. We use plenty of paper products here, and one of the most important and interesting parts of my job is the ability to select very affordable paper products. ☹ Afterwards, we visited 99 Ranch Market, an amazing Asian grocery store, full of interesting items and several delicious Asian restaurants. Our grocery basket was full, including a bag of garlic & vinegar pork skins, which we devoured on the way home. Did you know, when you eat too much salty/sour food or chips, you end up irritating your tastebuds (you know what I’m talking about) even scraping some of them off. Hmmm. Since vinegar would make the chips soggy and un-preservable, acetic acid is added in its place. Although it’s weak, any exposure to any acid in large quantities will leave you with minor burns and discomfort. If you look in the mirror, you’ll notice those tiny little bumps called lie bumps, may be swollen, or missing. But I love vinegar chips so much that I am going to take a chance on continuing to lose a few of my lie bumps. But here I am, three days later, and my mouth is still messed up.

For the past couple of weeks, I have been watering my neighbor’s plants, trying to keep them alive in the horrible heat while she was gone. Her Boston ferns were immediately, totally roasted with too much sun, but everything else was looking pretty good, considering how hot it’s been.  One day on the way to work, I stopped, using her code to open the garage door, then placed the key she left me to the back door into the house. A house alarm was not on my radar, because I didn’t have a clue what the code was. Since my own alarm company calls me immediately, I really didn’t worry much because I figured they would call her and she would say, “it’s ok. I have a friend watering.” I kept watering. What was I supposed to do? Call the police and tell them that I was the person breaking into the house, but it’s OK, I’m a nice person. I probably spent another ten or so minutes watering the inside and front porch plants before I headed back to the garage. As I was punching in the code so I could close the garage, I sensed someone moving in on my left. Oops. Police officer #1.  Police officer #2 came around on my right. I was glad I had dressed nice that day. I smiled and introduced myself. They requested identification which I quickly supplied after making sure it was ok to walk to my car and purse. I thanked them for taking such good care of us and our neighborhood, and they thanked me for being such a good sport. Wow. Have a great 4th weekend, and be sure to take cookies, donuts, iced drinks, or something wonderful to our local police officers this week. They deserve the best! It’s likely they will spend their whole weekend taking care of people that drink and act stupid with fireworks. Don’t be one of them.

What I Heard This Week 01-20-2022

What I Heard This Week January 19, 2022

The 2022 Super Bowl LVI will be on Sunday February 13th. Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre will perform on stage together for the first time. Yawn. I Googled, “How much do Super Bowl tickets cost?” and almost fell out of my chair. It said, “Prices for these start at roughly $7,500, and include one upper deck ticket and admission to a pre-party on Super Bowl Sunday. Large national ticket brokers, who speculate on how much fans will ultimately be willing to pay for Super Bowl seats, can also have a significant impact on Super Bowl ticket prices.”  Super Bowl 2022 will be televised on NBC, stream live on Peacock, or NBC Sports App. NBC was originally scheduled to broadcast the 2021 game and CBS had the 2022 Super Bowl, but the two networks decided to swap years in order for NBC to have both the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics in 2022.

A British surgeon who branded his initials on patients’ livers, can no longer work as a doctor in the UK. He used a device called an argon beam coagulator to place his initials on the transplanted liver of his patients at the end of each surgery. This was discovered when an organ transplant failed, and another doctor performed surgery on his patient. Bet that was a surprise.

A New Hampshire man caught a state record burbot that measured 35 inches in length and weighing over 12 pounds. Freshwater cusk, otherwise known as burbot or by their scientific name Lota Lota are the only freshwater member of the cod family and are usually found in water with temperatures below 70 degrees, even living under the ice, with larger females capable of laying more than one million eggs. It was beautiful. I kept reading to see if perhaps it was a catch & release, but I think it must have been catch & eat or catch & stuff.

This is amazing. A U.S. man with terminal heart disease was successfully implanted with a genetically modified pig heart in a first-of- its-kind operation. The patient was ineligible for a conventional heart transplant because of his severe condition. Pig hearts are similar in size to human hearts and have an anatomy that is similar, but not identical. They modified 10 genes in the pig heart, with four genes knocked out, three of them responsible for producing antibodies that cause rejection. As I write this, the patient is doing well. I can’t say the same thing for the pig who said he was coerced by the other barnyard animals on Old MacDonalds’ farm to sign the organ donor card on his driver’s license.

A cat will look down to a man. A dog will look up to a man. But a pig will look you straight in the eye and see his equal. Sir Winston Churchill

On March 6th, Oreo, the junk food king of limited-edition flavors, is celebrating its 110th birthday with a sprinkle-encrusted Chocolate Confetti Cake cookie. Rainbow sprinkles both in and on the cookie and also a double layer of crème, one layer has the signature crème with added sprinkles, and an additional layer of a chocolate cake-flavored crème as well.

Tennis legend Chris Evert had genetic testing done after her younger sister died of ovarian cancer, found late stage. Her testing showed she was at an increased risk for ovarian cancer, she had a preventive hysterectomy which showed a malignant tumor in her fallopian tube, which required surgery and chemotherapy, which she started this week.

Anonymous no more. Since she was found guilty last month, Ghislaine Maxwell will no longer fight to keep the names of eight “John Does” unsealed, and who have remained anonymous in court documents. Ms. Maxwell will now leave it up to the court to make that decision. John Does #53 and #54 have not opposed or objected to their names being unsealed. Hmmm. Inquiring minds want to know.

Ronnie Spector, known for 1960s hits such as “Be My Baby” and “Walking in the Rain,” died of cancer at 78. Spector led the Ronettes, was known for rocking cat-eye makeup and beehive hairdos. Amy Winehouse (think cat eye makeup and beehive), frequently cited Spector as her idol. Ronnie Spector was married to Phil Spector from ‘68 to ’74.  She wrote about their time together in her memoir, Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts and Madness, describing her former husband as abusive and controlling. Now we totally understand.

Michael Lang, the co-creator, and organizer of Woodstock died at 77. Dan Reeves, a former NFL running back for Dallas Cowboys and head coach for Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and NY Giants, died at 77. Reeves coached 23 seasons in the NFL and was twice named Coach of the Year. Filmmaker and historian Peter Bogdanovich died at 82.  He directed The Last Picture Show, which received eight Oscar nominations, and movies like Paper Moon and Mask.

What is a Karen? It is described as a woman who acts entitled, expects certain privileges or special treatment, is angered easily, self-absorbed, often affluent, or middle-aged, demanding and overly dramatic. I have friends named Karen, so I want you to know that I didn’t start this, I’m just repeating it, so don’t take offense. It’s my job to inform. 😊 What was it that Joe Friday said on Dragnet…? “Just the facts, ma’am.” Hmmm. Or was that Dan Aykroyd on SNL? Either way, it’s just crazy current information.

A Karen, driving a large SUV tried to cut and force herself into an existing already LONG line for coffee. It was videoed as the vehicles in the existing line scooted closer and closer together, not allowing the merge. When no one would let her in, she left. You can mess with Texas but don’t mess with our coffee!

Bank of America just became the biggest US financial institution to end fees for insufficient funds. It also plans to cut overdraft fees from $35 to $10. To celebrate the upcoming Platinum Jubilee (that’s 70 years on the throne) for Queen Elisabeth II, the people of the United Kingdom are invited to compete in the Platinum Pudding Competition.  According to the BabyCenter, the top ten most popular girl baby names of 2021, were Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Ava, Sophia, Charlotte, Isabella, Mia, Luna, and Harper. For boys, it was Liam, Noah, Oliver, Elijah, Lucas, Levi, Mason, Asher, James, and Ethan.

While I was at the post office this morning, I bought stamps. Selecting stamps is a very important job for me at the office. I want to encourage people to smile when they see the bill in the mail. So, I looked through the new stamps he presented and carefully chose. There they were, Message Monsters Stamps. Twenty stamps with silly little monsters, and an array of hats, conversation bubbles, and sweet sayings that you can add to your stamps to make them perfect. This could be the greatest gift for kids, along with a box of notecards. I am a firm believer that kids need to know how to write instead of emailing. I remember as a young girl of 13 or 14, taking a course where they taught us “bread and butter” note writing. It’s a short note thanking someone who has recently provided the writer with hospitality or perhaps, a gift. Let’s bring it back.

If Buc-ee’s was your regular pick-up spot for your weekly Source fix, along with gas, sweet tea, and a breakfast taco, then we have some bad news. We were told on Tuesday of last week that we would no longer be allowed to have a newspaper rack or papers at any of the Brazoria County Buc-ee’s stores, for the next day. I wrote Buc-ee’s and explained that we have tried to keep our racks clean and papers stacked nicely; if someone had only let us know what we were doing incorrectly, we would have changed our ways. I hope I word the following properly… We were told by their representative that all newspapers had been eliminated because there were several unsuitable publications that wanted the same privileges and space at their stores. Understood! Get rid of everyone. It is their property and their decision on what happens on their property, but that didn’t give us the time to let you know what was happening. For that we apologize. We are scrambling to locate new drops for these papers, but it may not be as convenient as it once was, at least for a while. Please help us by letting Buc-ee’s know that you want us back.
The Source Weekly is a free community newspaper full of community events, information about where to find a new car, landscaper, plumber, carpet cleaner, appliances, insurance, new home or apartment, where to get your deer processed, license to carry training or even a new chicken coop. You can put in a free garage sale ad and sell your junk, find the latest Crime Stoppers wanted fugitives, or where to get your car serviced. We tell our readers what bands are playing on the patio this weekend, when Rotary Shrimp Boil is happening (January 22nd), and when The Lion in the Winter is showing at The Center for the Arts and Sciences, right along with information about the guy that can grind that giant stump in your front yard. We will be missed by Buc-ee’s customers. Since Harvey and Covid, it has been rough for small businesses, and we support small business in the best way possible with affordable or free advertising. We have worked hard for the past 23 years to support this community and the people who live and work here. Please help us with a note, phone call, or email, to those that may have forgotten. Thanks. You’re the best! To those of you that have called our office to find a new location or came by to pick up a copy, we so appreciate you. Lisa

PS: My kids were going back to school this week, so I boiled a pretty little organic chicken to make a family favorite of chicken and dumplings. I cooked the chicken the day before, so it was possible for me to finish dinner in time for their departure the next evening. I was de-boning that chicken feeling pretty good about myself when out popped a red plastic bag, home to the heart, gizzard, and liver.  Yep, still stuffed inside that poor chicken. We looked it up online to make sure it was safe to eat after boiling it all afternoon. They said yes. I haven’t made that mistake since I was about 18 years old. I think this is how it starts. Have a great week. Thanks for taking the time to find us and remember to just call the office if you can’t find a copy of The Source Weekly – we can send it straight to your inbox every single week and you can read it just like it’s on paper, but not. It’s just harder to take to the bathroom. 😊

What I Heard This Week 01-13-2022

What I Heard This Week January 12, 2022

A tropical tree that is new to science has been named after Leonardo DiCaprio, in recognition of his campaigning and petitioning against logging in order to save the rainforest where it was found.  Uvariopsis dicaprio has large yellow-green flowers on its trunk. It’s beautiful.

Take-two Interactive, the gaming giant behind Grand Theft Auto is buying social game developer Zynga (Words with Friends, Farmville) for $12.7 billion. This acquisition is one of the biggest in video game history.

A Louisiana man saved his pennies for 45 years. He filled 15 five-gallon plastic water containers. “I became convinced that spotting a lost or dropped penny was an additional God-given incentive reminding me to always be thankful,” said Otha Anders. “There have been days where I failed to pray and more often than not, a lost or dropped penny would show up to remind me.” He cashed in $5,136, just in time to pay an unexpected medical bill.

A cup of chopped red bell pepper contains nearly three times more vitamin C than an orange. Red peppers are also a great source of vitamin A.

Walmart has briefly closed dozens of stores (whole stores) as COVID continues to affect operations with employees out. The first tuna sale of the year is a tradition in Japan and is supposed to be a sign of good luck. This year a 465-pound Bluefin tuna sold for $150,000, which is 16.8 million yen. Part of a failed Russian rocket launch made an uncontrolled re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere landing in the Pacific Ocean. It is common for debris from space to burn up when reentering Earth’s atmosphere, posing no harm, but larger parts can be dangerous depending on where they land.

Someone on Facebook sent me this. It’s too lovely not to share, and let’s face it, we could all stand to be just a tiny bit nicer, kinder, and more considerate.

  1. Compliment three people every day.
  2. Watch a sunrise at least once a year.
  3. Be the first to say, Hello.
  4. Live beneath your means.
  5. Treat everyone like you want to be treated.
  6. Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen.
  7. Forget the Joneses.
  8. Never deprive someone of hope. It may be all he has.
  9. Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage.
  10. Be tough-minded but tenderhearted.
  11. Be kinder than necessary.
  12. Don’t forget, a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
  13. Keep your promises.
  14. Learn to show cheerfulness, even when you don’t feel like it.
  15. Remember that overnight success usually takes about 15 years.
  16. Leave everything better than you found it.
  17. Remember that winners do what losers don’t want to do.
  18. When you arrive at your job in the morning, let the first thing you say brighten everyone’s day.
  19. Don’t rain on other people’s parades.
  20. Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.

Country singer William Lee Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys is 83. Actor Kirstie Alley is 71. Country singer Ricky Van Shelton is 70. Actor Faye Dunaway is 81.

Radio and TV personality Howard Stern is 68. Singer Melanie Chisholm of the Spice Girls is 48. Sporty Spice. Actor Billy Gray of Father Knows Best is 84. Bud Anderson. Guitarist Trevor Rabin of Yes is 68. Drummer Fred White of Earth, Wind and Fire is 67. Actor Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Seinfeld is 61. Country singer Trace Adkins is 60. Singer-producer T-Bone Burnett is 74.

Do you remember the Many Loves of Dobie Gillis? Dwayne Hickman played Dobie, who pursued, well, almost every girl he met. The series included Bob Denver, Warren Beatty, and Tuesday Weld, and was an instant hit when it debuted in 1959. In addition to being a star and talented artist, he also worked for Howard Hughes, and CBS. He died at 87 from complications related to Parkinson’s. My favorite role of his was when he played Jed in Cat Ballou, with Jane Fonda, Michael Callan, and Lee Marvin.

Sidney Poitier died at age 94. His family was living in the Bahamas, but happened to be visiting Miami, where he was born two months premature, therefore automatically granting him U.S. citizenship. He moved to NY to work when he was 16, employed as a dishwasher and delivery person. After failing his first audition because of his inability to fluently read a script, an elderly Jewish waiter sat with him every night helping him to improve his reading. I guess he did ok. In 1964, he was the first African American and Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor; also receiving two Golden Globe Awards, British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album.

Child psychologists have demonstrated that our minds are actually constructed by these thousands of tiny interactions during the first few years of life. We aren’t just what we’re taught. It’s what we experience during those early years – a smile here, a jarring sound there – that creates the pathways and connections of the brain. We put our kids to fifteen years of quick-cut advertising, passive television watching, and sadistic video games, and we expect to see emerge a new generation of calm, compassionate, and engaged human beings?”Sidney Poitier

Full House star, Bob Saget, died at 65. Saget was a cultural TV icon, a single father-figure that helped raise a generation of Americans. Comedian George Wallace, a longtime friend, said he wished everyone had a friend like Bob Saget.  “The more I think about him, the more I would start to laugh. A family guy he was, but the filthiest mouth on this planet. When he gets to heaven, they’re going to have to change their agenda to let him in. I loved this guy. I wished everybody knew him.”

After last week, you know I had a soft spot in my heart for Betty White, so I’m going to share something else that I found interesting. Then I’ll be quiet for a little while. Maybe. There is a Wisconsin brewery that has been honoring Betty White for years with her own beer called The Blond Betty. They are now letting people buy beer through January, donating all the proceeds towards a cause benefiting animals. Betty White was married to Allen Ludden who was raised, and now buried nearby.

2022 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Lineup: Cody Johnson, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, for King & Country, Ricky Martin, Jon Pardi, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Luke Bryan, Maren Morris, Kane Brown, Journey, Bun B’s H-Town Takeover, Parker McCollum, Dierks Bentley, Sam Hunt, Gwen Stefani, Khalid, Chris Stapleton, Marshmello, Brad Paisley, and of course, George Strait with special guest Ashley McBryde. (FYI: I know that most of you don’t care, but Marshmello is a guy doing electronic dance music with a giant marshmallow helmet covering his head and is considered a worldwide phenomenon.) Hmmm.

Bed, Bath and Beyond is closing 37 out 200 stores in the coming weeks. Currently, only two stores are scheduled to close in Texas; Brownsville, and San Angelo, but a sure way to know for sure is to go to the mall and see if there happens to be a liquidation sale going on. If not, while you are there, you can pick up some great after Christmas sale items. “Ongoing supply chain issues and inventory constraints cost the company about $100 million.”

Richard Branson, Virgin Group founder, is currently recovering from a mild case of coronavirus. He, his wife, and other members of his family all caught the omicron variant. Branson said that he “can’t stress enough” that those eligible for a booster should get.

Seen on back window of a big SUV in traffic: Honk if a kid falls out. I’m still laughing because as a parent, there were days that it felt just like that. I was doing good to just get them stuffed into the car dressed, with swim bags, backpacks, and homework finished, but we did it!

Paint Colors for 2022: The Pantone Color of the Year is Very Peri, a vibrant shade of periwinkle blue. The Better Homes and Gardens collection from Walmart is Laurel Leaf, a dusty green shade. Dunn-Edwards picked a warm, earthy brown shade called Art and Craft. Then Benjamin Moore picked October Mist, a soft, silvery green shade. Sherwin-Williams selected Evergreen Fog, a beautiful grey-green. Valspar named a palette of 12 nature-inspired hues of soothing blues and greens, instead of a single color. HGTV picked Aleutian and describes it as a well-worn pair of faded blue jeans. Glidden picked Guacamole as their color of the year. Behr chose Breezeway, a soft, silvery blue-green reminiscent of sea glass, and PPG Home Depot selected a soft shade of green called Olive Sprig. So, after reading all of this information, I would say that after being stuck inside for the past two years, people are appreciating the outdoors and want to bring those colors inside with them. So, if you are looking to paint your house this year, greens, blues, and shades of nature are in colors.

Hard Rock International bought The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for approximately $1.08 billion, whew, which includes an aquarium, an artificial volcano, and a dolphin habitat. By 2025, a new guest-room tower will be erected in the shape of a humongous guitar, and they plan to add a live music venue and tear down the volcanos.

Have you seen the Progressive Insurance commercial where the young adults are in training on how not to become their parents? It’s pretty funny. Today I took out my instructions on how to set up my iPhone as a magnifying glass. The instructions were in the AARP magazine which to me, should be very simple for those of us that are becoming age-challenged. Ha-ha. Open Settings. Go to Accessibility. Tap Magnifier and turn on. A Magnifier app will be added to your phone’s screen. As bad as we hated it, Tina and I had to call in a much younger person to help us. Maybe that commercial isn’t really that funny.

What I Heard This Week 01-06-2022

What I Heard This Week January 5, 2022

In France, thieves stole more than 6,000 pounds of oysters that were being raised on the Mediterranean coast. Instead of installing new security cameras, installing tracers in the oyster beds, or calling the police, the owners typed up several tiny notes and glued them inside empty oyster shells, explaining that whoever found the scrap of paper had “just won their own weight in oysters.” A phone number was attached to call in order to collect the prize. Gee. There haven’t been any oyster thefts since 2016 when the notes started appearing in the empty oyster shells. If someone calls the prize number, they are asked where they bought the “winning” oysters. If they were bought from an unknown vendor, then the “winner” is informed that they purchased stolen oysters and the police are notified. I do believe that I could eat my weight in oysters.

I’m a teenager trapped in an old bodyBetty White (same, Betty, same)

In a file cabinet in my office, I keep several sets of rough clothes and shoes, just in case I have time or the inclination to run outside and play in the garden dirt, in back of the office. Most of the time, after I wear the clothes, I wash and bring them back pretty quick, so I never seem to get to the bottom of the clothes drawer. Today my feet were freezing, and I needed a pair of socks, so I started digging and rummaging through the drawer, and finally found a thick white pair that I hadn’t seen in ages. That knowledge was reinforced when I bent down, slipped them on my cold feet and listened to the dead and dying elastic pop as my feet squeezed into them. They could fall right off my feet at any moment, they’re not pretty, but my feet are warm for now.

People have told me that Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with old friends.  At my age, if I wanted to keep in touch with old friends, I’d need a Ouija board. Betty White

An LA Times photographer covering a pro-Trump rally documented the Capitol attack with his GoPro camera attached to his helmet, letting the camera run until his battery died. The video was not shown until recently.  He said that the only time he really felt in danger was when a man hit him in the back of the head with a flagpole and shouted that he was “fake news.” Luckily, he was wearing a helmet, but some of his colleagues who were also attacked that day were not as lucky. Because the newer cameras have the ability to send photos, he was able to immediately supply images directly back to his office for stories and pictures to be posted online. I guess the video will be made public soon.

It’s [old age] not a surprise, we knew it was coming – make the most of it. So, you may not be as fast on your feet, and the image in your mirror may be a little disappointing, but if you are still functioning and not in pain, gratitude should be the name of the game.” Betty White

Who doesn’t love the Home Alone movies! In real life Arizona, parents of an 11-year-old boy were arrested after having left him home alone with plenty of frozen food. Officials received a tip about a welfare check needed for a boy alone for an undetermined length of time. They found the boy’s mother had left to go out of state before Thanksgiving and the father soon after. The boy had not been to school for at least two weeks. I have always said that just because you can have children, doesn’t mean that you should.

In 2016, Ghislaine Maxwell secretly married a Silicon Valley entrepreneur named Scott Borgerson. He called her a “wonderful and loving person” and tried to help secure her release on bail by offering up millions of dollars after she was accused of helping sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. While Maxwell was being held in jail, her husband told her by phone that he had moved on with another woman. Hmmm. The wonderful and loving person now faces up to 65 years in prison.

Legendary star Betty White died of natural causes in her sleep, just weeks before her 100th birthday. She definitely made the world a funnier place for people, and a happy, healthier place for animals. I have honored her throughout the column with some favorite quotes.

Who did we lose in 2021? Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, former NFL coach John Madden, whose namesake video game had sold more than 180 million copies by 2018. We lost Oscar-winning actor Christopher Plummer, Ed Asner – the iconic newsman Lou GrantCloris Leachman – the most-awarded performer in Emmy historyMichael K. Williams, Larry King who conducted more than 50,000 interviews during his career, including every US President since Gerald Ford. Jessica Walter, best known as Lucille Bluth in Arrested Development. Saturday Night Live’s Norm MacDonaldDustin DiamondScreech in Saved by the Bell, and James Michael Tyler, coffeehouse waiter, Gunther, on Friends. Biz Markie, whose feel-good single “Just a Friend” was certified platinum in 1990. Legendary Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Nanci Griffith, Actor-musician Michael Nesmith of the Monkees, Broadway composer Stephen SondheimPrince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Human rights activist Desmond Tutu, the first Black bishop of Johannesburg and archbishop of Cape Town, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Bob Dole led the Senate Republicans. Retired Army General Colin Powell, the country’s first Black secretary of state and chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIOLarry Flynt, founder of Hustler magazine. NASA astronaut Michael Collins, who, along with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, flew to the moon on the Apollo 11 mission in 1969E.O. Wilson, often referred to as “Darwin’s natural heir.” Rush LimbaughPhil Spector, the record producer whose hits included “Let It Be,” “Imagine,” and “Unchained Melody.” Bernie Madoff, financier and former chairman of the Nasdaq who ran the world’s largest-ever Ponzi scheme. To name just a few…

When asked why she isn’t on Facebook, Betty White responded, “Facebook just sounds like a drag. In my day, seeing pictures of people’s vacations was considered a punishment.”

In California, a couple welcomed fraternal twins, a baby boy at 11:45 pm on New Year’s Eve, and then 15 minutes later at midnight, his little sister arrived, making them twins born in different years. The press release said that some estimate the chance of twins being born in different years are 1 in 2 million.

Butterflies are like women. We may look pretty and delicate, but baby, we can fly through a hurricane. Betty White

Alaska recorded their warmest December day: 67 degrees. Yep. 67 degrees… December… in Alaska. A 20-year-old woman was detained on suspicion of giving birth after officials found a newborn baby in the plane restroom trash can after a flight, during customs check on January 1st. ☹  Apple is almost to the $3 trillion mark. The stock just needs to hit $182.85 to make it the first publicly traded company ever to hit such a number. The stock has tripled in value in just three years, hitting $1 trillion in August 2018, then 2 trillion in August 2020. Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers both announced they had tested positive for Covid, were feeling fine, and were appreciative they had been vaccinated and ‘boostered’ (not a real word yet).

My mother always used to say, ‘The older you get, the better you get, unless you’re a banana. Betty White

A U.S. judge has dismissed the case against Jeffrey Epstein’s jail guards. Texas DPS agents made a huge drug bust recently near Kingsville,  and seized 54 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside water tanks with an estimated street value of over $4.7 million. It’s called Operation Lone Star. Little Caesars’ Hot-N-Ready $5 pizzas is now going to cost $5.55, an 11% increase from its old price. A NC police chief was placed on unpaid leave for telling officers about a “clinic” to obtain Covid-19 vaccination cards without getting the vaccines. WHAT!  Royal Caribbean has temporarily suspended any bookings on departing cruises until January 10th. This will assist in social distancing on the cruise ships. Elizabeth Holmes former CEO of Theranos, has been convicted of defrauding investors and patients.

Betty White had a long-standing crush on Robert Redford. She once said: “My answer to, ‘What have you not done in the business that you’ve always wanted to do?’ is ‘Robert Redford’.”

A judge dismissed a child pornography lawsuit filed against the surviving members of Nirvana over the cover image on the Nevermind album. The baby pictured “chasing a dollar bill” on the 1991 album cover is Spencer Elden, and even though was just months old at the time, he says the image of him was taken and used without his consent and the nudity amounts to an image of child abuse. His parents were paid $200 for the picture and when you think about it, Elden has spent thirty years profiting from his self-proclaimed celebrity as the Nirvana Baby. In 2016, in a 25th anniversary recreation of the photo shoot, he volunteered to do it naked again, then changed his mind and posed in swimming trunks. The judge ruled a dismissal was made “with leave to amend” which means he has given him until January 13th to refile a new complaint or the matter will be considered closed. Sounds like Spencer is still chasing the dollar.

We didn’t have Facebook in my day. We had a phone book, but you didn’t waste an afternoon on it. Betty White

Right here I was planning on telling you that Covid cases have risen by 948% in Florida. But instead, I want to leave you with another Betty White quote. When asked about her habits, she said, “Get at least 8 hours of beauty sleep. 9 if you’re ugly.” The quote that I REALLY wanted to use, we decided against because Betty White could be a little bit salty, and I didn’t want you talking bad about me.

What I Heard This Week! 07-09-2020

What I Heard This Week July 8, 2020

As I left the office today, to take the very puny bank deposit and to pick up some lunch, something great happened…besides Cane’s Chicken. (It is a luxury that I allow myself every month or so, then I consume all the fries before I even get back to the office.) As I walked to my car, which was parked under the only shade tree on Parking Way, a mature gentleman said something to me from his white Chevrolet PU. I had my mask on (which as crazy as it sounds, impairs my hearing) so I had to get a little closer to the truck and asked him to repeat himself. He said, “You sure look nice today.” WooHoo!!!! Party. Dance in the street. I did have on one of my favorite dresses, my new red bandana mask, and my hair was clean, but still. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. White Truck. I know I walked away feeling a little bit taller, with new spring in my step the rest of the day. Even after I ate four pieces of fried chicken and every single one of my fries. 😊

Disgraced 66-year-old Jeffrey Epstein died in jail by apparent suicide after more than a dozen lawsuits against his estate stating women and teen girls suffered sexual abuse from him and his enablers, at his homes in Manhattan, the Virgin Islands, Paris, New Mexico and Florida. Last week, Ghislaine Maxwell, 58, a British socialite, confidante, companion, and ex-girlfriend of Epstein, was arrested by the FBI and accused of overseeing his alleged sex trafficking ring. If convicted on the charges, Maxwell faces up to 35 years in prison. It was reported that she is ready to give the FBI some big names associated with crimes she is accused of, in order to save herself. Yikes. Prince Andrew. Bill Clinton. Shades of Heidi Fleiss and her “little black book.”

Did you watch the filmed version of Broadway’s Hamilton on July 3rd? For those of you that have lived in a cave for the past five years, Hamilton is a song-filled story of one of America’s foremost founding fathers that won 11 Tony’s, as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. They filmed it in only three days with the original Broadway cast, which consists mostly of Black, Latino and Asian American performers, including Lin-Manuel Miranda himself, who wrote and starred in the title role of Alexander Hamilton. Watching it filmed this way, means everyone gets the best seat in the house. Fantastic. It is on Disney+ and only on Disney+. Bribe a friend if you don’t have it. Definitely, worth it.

Now might be a good time to stock up on European chocolates, olives and beer made with malt, which could be hit with tariffs of as much as 100%. Do not hoard like toilet paper.  Kristen Stewart (Twilight) is playing Princess Diana in a new movie, about her divorce from Prince Charles… The female Fort Hood soldier missing since April, was bludgeoned with a hammer by another soldier on the base, dismembered and dumped near the Leon River about 20 miles away. The soldier killed himself, and a 22-year-old female civilian has been arrested and now faces one count of conspiracy to tamper with evidence… Are COVID Parties a real thing? Put your money in the kitty and the first one sick, rakes it all-in to help pay for medical or funeral expenses, I guess. I worked hard but could not find any hard evidence to back this up, so for now I would say it’s just a rumor. A very sick rumor.

When baseball returns, there will no longer be any spitting. What, no spitting? Why the heck do they spit so much, anyway. They spit in their gloves, they spit on the ball (spitballs), they spit sunflower seeds, they spit for no reason at all. Perhaps baseball pacifiers are needed to plug this problem.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Beatles legend Ringo Starr is 80. It Don’t Come Easy. Did you see his birthday special? Extremely hard to ‘imagine’ that he is 80.

Charlie Daniels, member of Country Music Hall of Fame who sang “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” recorded with Bob Dylan, died after suffering a stroke. He was 83. He was also an outspoken supporter of U.S. veterans. Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who married her former 6th grade student after she was convicted of raping him, died of cancer at 58. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental condition they say caused her reckless behavior, which did not gain her any sympathy.

On July 4th, Kayne West announced that he will be running for President in 2020. Hmmm. He has also (previously) claimed to be a billionaire. It was also announced on another day, that his clothing company, Yeezy, was granted between $2 million and $5 million from the Paycheck Protection Program meant to help small businesses keep workers employed during the COVID-19 induced shutdown.

Studies have found that people touch their faces 23 times or more in an hour. It is believed that wearing gloves can help break the habit of frequently touching your face. When I’m out, I wear gardening gloves because they can be thrown in the wash.  I am wearing my hair pulled back (makes it way easier to get a mask off/on, and less flyaway hairs to tend to), and no mascara. Even if this virus gets better, viruses like this are here to stay, so we need to create better habits for ourselves now. Washing your hands for 20 seconds will not help if you do not keep your hands off your face. End of sermon.

Corona-coaster (noun): The ups and downs of the pandemic. One day you are loving your bubble, doing workouts and baking sourdough, the next you’re crying, drinking wine for breakfast and missing people you don’t even like.

“If these projections are even halfway right, there’s no health system in the country that can accommodate this.” Dr. Peter Hotez, Immunologist at Baylor College of Medicine, commenting on a new Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania model predicting daily cases of coronavirus will more than triple in the largest counties within the next four weeks, if there is no change in social distancing practices. These are the same folks that several weeks back, predicted a spike in cases based on cellphone data, showing that without stay-at-home restrictions, most Texans were not social distancing.

So, you’re not too worried about bringing the virus home to your family, and you are sure not concerned about getting the virus yourself, because you are healthy and will be good-as-new in a couple of weeks, as you slip smoothly back into your old life…did you hear about healthy Broadway star Nick Cordero, 41, who died after battling COVID-19 for 95 long days. For the math-challenged, that’s three months. He endured a medically induced coma, ventilator, dialysis, a specialized heart-lung bypass machine, his heart stopped, he had minor heart attacks and sepsis, the amputation of his right leg, and a tracheotomy. Had he lived he would have needed a double lung transplant. Doctors are just now beginning to learn what the long-term damage will be to the survivors of COVID-19. Kidney damage may require dialysis, strokes and blood clots can lead to disability, and scarred lungs to permanently decreased lung function. You may go home with a walker and need to re-learn to walk, swallow, eat and talk. Practically every organ system can be affected, if not by the virus, then by the immune response.

Washing your face mask is as important as wearing it. One report says that a detectable level of the infectious virus could still be present on the outer layer of a mask for up to seven days, at room temperature. Homemade masks are more susceptible to viruses because they can actually carry the virus. (In a perfect, perfect, world we would all have N95 masks, but we do not.)  How many times a day do you touch your mask? I know I touch mine about once a minute. We are NOT supposed to touch the mask except to take it off and then you touch just the ear loops. Then wash your hands. Hmmm. I know you do not want to hear this, but up to 97% of the air’s virus particles can easily penetrate cloth masks. That is why they say that wearing a mask is to protect the other people, not yourself. What can we do?  Wash your mask every day! Put it directly into the washing machine or sink. In a perfect world, front line workers or people that spend their time in public places where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, like grocery store checkers, waiters and food service, all store clerks, etc., should not be wearing their masks for more than 2 hours because the dampness from our breath makes it less effective as a barrier against coronavirus transmission. How do we wash them? Heat. Washing machines are the best, with the type of fabric determining the temperature of the water. It needs to be the warmest possible water that the material will tolerate, preferably hot water. Detergents with heavy-duty-stain-removing or bleach-like compounds and active cleaning ingredients should be used. You can wash them with your other clothes. You can also disinfect your mask by ironing or putting in a dry-heat oven for 20 minutes at about 160 degrees. This would be good for an otherwise disposable mask that cannot be washed. My daughter believes that I should not tell you about the oven because someone might forget their mask and it would end up crispy…sounds like something that her mother would do. Better use that method as a last resort and be sure to set a timer. If hand washing is the only alternative, then lather with soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds with warm to hot water. Hot air drying or ironing should follow, provided it is safe for the fabric. Sometimes I leave my mask and gloves in my hot car. When temperatures outside range from 80 degrees to 100 degrees, the temperature inside a car can quickly climb to between 130 to 172 degrees.

In 1907, a Boston attorney created a cup made from paper, so it could be thrown away. At the time, there were no disposable paper tissues, paper towels, paper plates…nothing like it. He called it the “Health Kup” and in 1912, Smithsonian Magazine even called the cup a “life-saving technology,” that will help stop the spread of disease. For ten years the brand did NOT fly off the shelves. Then in 1918 the Spanish flu tore through the U.S., the Health Kup was rebranded to the Dixie Cup, an advertising campaign was launched, stressing that uncounted germs cluster and breed on glass…influenza, pneumonia, diphtheria and worse, and the rest is history.

Fourth of July – Flags were flying all over our small towns for the Fourth. The flags in the esplanade downtown LJ and in front of Walmart are sponsored by businesses associated with Brazosport Breakfast Lion’s Club. (See our Thank-You Sponsors ad on page 9. You can be a sponsor!) Castleberry Insurance, American Realty and State Farm had flags around the perimeters of their buildings. In my neighborhood, several of us lined our front yards and the entrance of the subdivision with flags, the same way we do our lights at Christmas. All over town, people were flying flags in their front yards. There was a small but mighty boat parade down Oyster Creek, blasting air horns and showing off creatively decorated boats. It was great. Had I known about it I would have joined them in my kayak. It was an inspiration, leaving me wondering if we really needed fireworks.  We celebrated the red, white, and blue in a different way this year, with sincere appreciation for the things we have.

Wash or wipe your groceries before you put them up. Just pretend that every item has been touched by someone with the virus. We set up a station on the kitchen table. Every sack is put on the floor, then groceries are placed on the table to dry before we put them up. Don’t forget your reusable sacks, too. It may not be a perfect solution, but it’s what we have. Remember that the virus remains in charge, we are just along for the ride. Hang in there, my friends. Thanks for reading us. Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
