What I Heard This Week 01-25-2024

What I Heard This Week January 24, 2024

Mattress experts now say you should not make up your bed first thing in the morning, because you sweat during the night and the moisture needs to evaporate. It will help your mattress last longer, and you won’t be exposed to cooties, also known as staphylococcus, enterococcus, and norovirus. Just give it a couple of hours, then make up the bed. You know, my son told me this same story when he was growing up, but I thought it was just because he didn’t want to make up his bed. Sorry Gage.

Your brain at 3am: I can see that you’re trying to sleep so I would like to offer you a selection of every unresolved issue, memory, or things you should have said or done today as well as the last 30 years.

Quaker Oats Company has recalled more than 40 products, including granola bars, snacks, and granola cereals due to possible salmonella contamination. Contact 1-800-492-9322 or visit www.QuakerRecallUSA.comExternal Link Disclaimer.

Tiffany & Co. has a new collection with Pokémon, actually called The Tiffany & Arsham Studio & Pokemon Capsule Collection.  You can get one of the collection of pendants or all of them. The jewelry collection highlights six Pokémon: Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, Cubone, and Mew. All in diamond, silver, and gold. The individual silver and diamond pendants cost $1,290 each. And the necklace with the full set of Tiffany Pokémon pendants at $7,190. If you are prosperous and have lots of spare cash, you can get the 18k Yellow Gold with Diamonds Pikachu pendant (the Pikachu pendant in gold without diamonds costs $9,190), then you will also receive a Poké Ball in Tiffany Blue. Hmmm. Who would have guessed back in 1996!

Just in case you didn’t read the front-page banner, instead going straight to this column (wink-wink), January 31st is Appreciate Your Social Security Check Day. I plan to appreciate appropriately. You must rejoice in the benefits of getting older.

In Austria, Josef Fritzl, now 88 years old, imprisoned his daughter in their basement when she was 18 years old and kept her there until 2008, when she was 42. Police said that Fritzl’s wife had no idea her daughter was being held in the cellar, thinking she had joined a cult. ☹ Oh, my! Did I mention that he fathered seven children with his daughter, three that stayed in the cellar with her, and three others that lived upstairs after he staged elaborate stories of finding the babies in bushes and on the doorstep, always with a note attached written by his daughter claiming she could not take care of the baby… the very gullible wife and mom still believing their daughter was in a cult, of course. One baby that died shortly after birth was cremated by Fritzl. Hmmm. Fritzl was sentenced to life in 2009 and has been held in a special unit for the criminally insane. (Gee, you’re kidding me…no empty basements available!) There is now a chance that he could be moved to a different prison, therefore allowing for the possibility of a release from prison. Some things are too weird and repulsive to understand.

The 2024 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo dates are set for Feb. 27 through March 17 at NRG Stadium. Feb. 27: BLAKE SHELTON, Feb. 28: Carly Pearce, Feb. 29: For King & Country, March 1: 50 Cent, March 2: Hardy, March 3: Ivan Cornejo, March 4: Hank Williams Jr., March 5: Oliver Anthony, March 6: Jelly Roll, March 7: Luke Bryan, March 8: Major Lazer, March 9: Lainey Wilson, March 10: Los Tigres Del Norte, March 11: Whiskey Myers, March 12: Bun B, March 13: Nickelback, March 14: Zac Brown Band, March 15: Jonas Brothers, March 16: Brad Paisley, March 17: Eric Church. Hmmm. A couple of names are performers I don’t recognize.

Kimberly Mata-Rubio was running in a special election for Mayor of Uvalde, a town where one of America’s deadliest mass murders happened… where 19 students and two teachers were killed in the 2022 Rob Elementary shootingKimberly Mata-Rubio lost her 10-year-old daughter, Lexi, in that shooting. Mata-Rubio would have been Uvalde’s first female mayor. Her husband is a local sheriff’s deputy. She is still most outspoken about the need for tougher gun laws, even testifying before Congress. Her campaign slogan was Moving Forward, Together. They say that if you want change, then you have to take action and be that change. Mata-Rubio was trying to be the change but lost this race to a former mayor and bank VP who calls for better police communications and mobilizing volunteers from the community. I wish her luck next time. Change is hard for people.

I was never a woman who wanted or needed a Sugar Daddy, but if Taco Daddies were a thing, my life might have taken a drastic turn.

Reba McEntire (National anthem), Post Malone (America the Beautiful), and Andra Day (Lift Every Voice and Sing), are scheduled to perform at Super Bowl LVIII pregame. Singer, songwriter, actor, dancer, and businessman Usher, will perform halftime, scheduled for Feb 11th at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada.

And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the world, then he made the Earth round and laughed and laughed and laughed.

Gaston Glock, an Austrian engineer who created the flat-nosed, plastic-body Glock handgun in 1982, now carried by military and law enforcement around the world, died at 94. We see this weapon in films, rap lyrics along with it being a growing number of the weapons on the streets. Mr. Glock gradually disappeared from the public eye, even as the 9mm handgun he crafted built global presence. Currently, more than 65 percent U.S. law enforcement carry Glock pistols. Think about how this guy changed the world. In 1999, Glock suspected that one of his close financial advisers had been embezzling funds. He confronted the advisor who then hired a hitman to murder Glock with a rubber mallet. Glock was hit in the head, but able to fight back, and punched the man until he collapsed. Both the advisor and the hitman were sent to prison. Glynis Johns, Tony Award-winning stage and screen actress who played opposite Julie Andrews in the Disney classic Mary Poppins as Mrs. Banks, and first to sing Stephen Sondheim’s Send In the Clowns, in A Little Night Music, died at 100. David Soul died at 80. I have fond memories of him on the hit 70’s undercover-cop show Starsky & Hutch, which I loved. He was Hutch. In the 60’s, he was a musician trying to make it in New York by performing masked, and billing himself as “The Covered Man” on variety shows where he stated he wanted to be recognized for his music and not his terrific good looks (my words, not his)… handsome and blond. Then came success on TV. In the 70’s he decided to relaunch his music career, hoping to be taken seriously as a musician. He released “Don’t Give Up On Us (Baby)” which ended up on Billboard Hot 100 as the #1 song. I never put the two together. Mary Weiss, lead singer of the 60’s girl group, The Shangri Las, died at 75. Remember Leader of the Pack?

Charles Osgood, 5-time Emmy winner and CBS Sunday Morning host, died at 91, after suffering dementia. Osgood was called “one of the last great broadcast writers” by Charles Kuralt, whom Osgood succeeded as host of the Sunday morning magazine program in 1994.

In Florida, in a recently released videoed confession, a 64-year-old man admitted to brutally killing his fiancée with a baseball bat just two months before their wedding… because he couldn’t afford the wedding or the lifestyle the 59-year-old woman desired. He had led the woman to believe he was rich and would buy her a house and boats. He also said he just didn’t know how to get out of the situation… he has now been sentenced to life.

A police officer accused of sexually assaulting a woman, allegedly told her he didn’t intentionally rape her. I’m just wondering… is that now a legitimate defense? Just asking since all the rules of propriety and law seem to be changing everyday…

Recently, with our super cold weather, I have been popping open a hand warmer to help me when I walk the dog… or even work at my computer. You know the little packets that produce heat and happiness.  Well, I asked myself what could be in those little cloth packages? So, I looked it up. First off, it’s just chemistryiron powder & air (which makes iron oxide, rust and heat), activated charcoal, sodium chloride and vermiculite (hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate). When you open the package, the more pores you have in the fabric, allows for more air distribution, and that’s why you shake it. More air makes more heat. When I came into the office this morning, I shook the one I used yesterday and it became warm again. Not hot, but warm. Life savers.

National “Tina” Day is January 28th I’ll take this space to say something to ‘our’ Tina… thank you for building our ads and this paper, and checking my column each and every week, along with adding commas where you think there needs to be a comma. I appreciate you on National Tina Day and every other day. To our readers: Thank you for sticking with us one more week. (Please sell something!)

What I Heard This Week! 05-27-2021

What I Heard This Week May 27, 2021

The biggest insect emergence on the planet.  This is the short story. Many parts of the Midwest and eastern US will experience a 17-year Brood X Cicada emergence in May and June of 2021. Cicadas (suh-kaa-duh) are harmless to humans, arrive in huge numbers in parks, wooded areas, and neighborhoods, but only when the ground warms to 64 degrees. The cicada live underground for 17 years, emerging near the end of their life cycle. When they arrive in abundance, they fly, land, and crawl everywhere, including on a few humans. Just imagine one stuck in your hair. As they emerge from the ground, they head for something upright like trees, where they molt, assume adult wings, and become the greatest of yummy meals for birds, squirrels, and other wildlife.  The males that are left create a very loud noise (often up around 100 decibels), to attract a mate; loud because the males try to drown out all their rival’s songs. Then they mate. Within hours, the females lay as many as 400-600 eggs in small tree branches and the trunks of trees. Males can mate several times, but the female usually mates only once. (Where have I heard that before?) The eggs hatch in 6 to 10 weeks, then they fall to the ground and burrow into the soil, not to be seen again here until 2038. The adult cicada lives for two to four weeks longer, then dies. Some people say that if you deep-fry them like a potato chip, then smother them in salt and spices, they are delicious to eat. You must also consume at least 4 ounces of alcohol rapidly.

The New York Post stated that Martha Stewart has a ‘muster’ of 16 beautiful peacocks on her property. Martha shot back that this is ‘fake news’ since she actually owns 21 of the glorious birds. On her farm she has a menagerie of animals, including Friesian horses, canaries, geese, dogs, donkeys, and chickens.

George Strait will make his return to the stage to close out the 90th anniversary of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The King of Country Music is set to make his 31st RodeoHouston appearance during a special, concert-only event Sunday, March 20, 2022. Tickets for this performance will go on sale to the public Thursday, June 24, with a limit of four tickets per person. Tickets will be available at rodeohouston.com.

For those of you that missed Wednesday’s Super Flower Blood Moon eclipse (it was a full moon, a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse on the same night – a rare lunar trifecta), do not despair, you will be able to catch another eclipse on the night of November 18 to 19. Only the thinnest little, tiny sliver of the moon will remain, but it will be very much like a total eclipse.

Adam & Eve. First ones to ignore Apple terms and conditions.

With all the rain, my tomatoes plants are growing like crazy, but the ants are also looking for high ground. I was staking plants last week and got into an ant bed several times. My ankles and wrists look pretty bad right now but would have been worse, had I not rubbed toothpaste on most of the bites when I came inside. I was the kid that always had an ant farm while growing up, so I understand that ants do so much good in a garden to aerate soil, pollinate, and control pests. Typically, I just try to stay out of their way, but enough is enough. So, I Googledhow to get rid of ants in the garden naturally” and of course, all the common suggestions that I have tried in the past, came up. Cinnamon or cayenne pepper around your plants, diatomaceous earth, brewed coffee grounds, boric acid & sugar traps, and boiling water. I have tried them all, but one method was new to me. “Distribute artificial sweetener near the ants.” Reportedly this is fatal to ants. Hmmm. Don’t you think we might want to reconsider before adding this stuff to our coffee and tea every day? I will let you know.  Sweet’ N Low, here I come.

Do you know someone who is eligible for a vaccine but does not have internet access? Please let them know they can call (833) 832-7067 for referral to a local vaccine provider.

Johnny Crawford, one of the original Mouseketeers, died at 75. He had Alzheimer’s and had contracted both COVID-19 and pneumonia. He was best known as playing Mark McCain on The Rifleman for 5-seasons, which earned him Emmy nomination for best supporting actor at age 13. Samuel E. Wright, the voice of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid movie, died at 74. He was a seasoned Broadway actor but also played the purple bunch-of-grapes character in commercials for Fruit of the Loom underwear. Former Republican Sen. John Warner, who represented Virginia in the US Senate for three decades and was widely respected for his views on military affairs, died at 94. He was married and divorced from Elizabeth Taylor, remaining friends until her death in 2011.

Hurricane season officially starts June 1st and is expected to be an above average season this year. Subtropical storm Ana, formed in the Atlantic last Saturday and was the first named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. For the seventh year in a row, there has been a named storm that formed prior to the official start of hurricane season. A tropical disturbance off the coast of Texas resulted in flooding in parts of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, last week. A perfect example of when above average is definitely not a good thing. Heck, I never took down my storm shutters from last year.

Two fishermen spotted a large object floating in North Carolina’s Bogue Inlet between Emerald Isle and Hammocks Beach State Park (aka Bear Island) that turned out to be a very alive black bear. “When we first saw it, we thought it was a log or something floating in the water, but the closer we got, we decided it was some type of animal.” The fishermen were unable to get the struggling bear to turn back towards the mainland because they feared their help was “freaking” out the bear. “A lot of people are wondering why we didn’t try to help, but you just don’t put a wild bear in the boat and drop it off at the island.”

Speed up the ripening process of hard avocados by placing them in a paper bag with bananas. The gases emitted from the bananas will get those avocados soft and ready to use in no time.

You know I take every opportunity to discuss recycling. Yes, it IS work, but it is OUR responsibility. There is only one Earth, and we are leaving an absolute mess for children and grandchildren. I love the Stella Roberts Recycling Center in Pearland that recycles for all Brazoria County. My daughter is now on her way with a car full. Pre-sort clean paper, cardboard, glass, and plastics. No grocery sacks. You can use cardboard boxes, re-usable totes, or tote bags to deliver your recyclables. They ask that you separate colored glass from clear and break down cardboard. It is always best to call before you go, in case they are short-staffed. Current hours Tues. to Sat. 9-1, so, try to get there by 12:45. Stay in your car and get in line prepared to move very quickly, since they unload. There is a donation box if you are feeling courteous, kind, and gracious. Shredding – small fee. I discovered they even accept fluorescent bulbs.  Check website for details. The Earth is a really neat place. Let us work together to keep it that way. Recycle.

Lipstick sales have jumped more than 80% as everyone’s social calendars, meetings, and family events are filling back up. Federal officials from the US Secret Service have helped recover $2 billion in fraudulently obtained COVID-19 relief funds. Every new Lamborghini will have an electric motor by the end of 2024. Better get mine ordered fast. 😊 There will be a cat joining the White House soon. It is reported that Major Biden is back and doing fine after a short adjustment, and time-out period. Well, just wait until he hears about THE cat.  Atlantic City 1st quarter casino earnings have more than tripled. The FDA approved the Pfizer and Moderna Vaccines, safe and effective for ages 12 and up.  The world’s largest iceberg just broke off the Antarctica shelf, and measures a whooping 15.5 miles wide, roughly the shape of Manhattan (think ironing board) but about 80 times larger. If this does not scare you, then you are not scare-able. The goal to have at least one COVID vaccine in the arm of 70% of adults by July 4, would sure be nice for those of us that are waiting for the slackers to catch up. Delta Air Lines is requiring new employees to get the Covid-19 vaccine, making it one of the largest US companies to issue a mandate. Many celebrities are investing in a TikTok-like app for kids, called Zigazoo. Oh, good. MGM just sold to Amazon for $8.45 BILLION. That does NOT endear me to Amazon at all.

When I was a kid, people were told to use seat belts, so my mom had them installed in our bronze-colored 1960 Buick Electra. Not everyone shared the same beliefs as my mom. She said that she had a hard time finding someone that would install them, but finally, she was able to drag three kids to Sears & Roebuck to install. That was a few years ago, but I still remember it. My parents absolutely did not have money to spend on seat belts, so to me it said LOVE. In the 60’s, we were told to get a polio vaccine so we wouldn’t contract polio. Measures all meant to save lives, so why do humans challenge everything. There is so much, “I’m in charge now, so you can’t tell me what to do” attitude. In the case of masks and vaccines, objectors are not only putting themselves in harm’s way, but also the people around them. So now, to spur on the American people, they are being bribed, and it seems to be working. The Ohio Lottery is offering 4yr. full-ride scholarships to state colleges. Residents over age 18 will vie for a weekly $1-million prize. Great incentive. Employers are offering cash bonuses, on-site clinics, paid leave, and more. The Navy is including more freedom of movement at port calls and the ending of pre-deployment quarantine. Some Army and Marine Corps bases have begun offering extra days off and reduced restrictions on freedom of movement for service members. Delaware is offering 4-day vacations, scholarships, State Parks passes, tickets, camping, and prize packages along with cash drawings. States are encouraged to use creativity to get it done. It is working but isn’t it a shame that society requires enticement, a buy-out, or gifts in exchange for doing the right thing. We must seem really selfish to countries that have only 2% of the population vaccinated because of vaccine shortages.

Con artists are getting smarter. A woman received a legitimate-looking fraud alert from Chase notifying her of $505 purchase at Walmart. The text message asked for confirmation that the purchase was hers. She texted back that she had no knowledge. Almost immediately, she received a call from a “Chase customer service representative,” that appeared to originate from Chase. The rep needed to secure her checking account and texted her a verification code to make sure she was the account holder. He also shared the last four digits of her SS# which she confirmed. Nothing suspicious. As she spoke with the rep, she opened her banking app and changed her password. The rep knew immediately that it had changed. The rep said he would be sending her a case number by email and hung up abruptly. Within seconds, her husband received a text from their bank notifying him that almost all their money had been transferred elsewhere. $10,000. There is more to this story for next week and it is not good. Enjoy the beautiful sunshine, and please do not forget to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

What I Heard This Week! 12-10-2020

What I Heard This Week December 9, 2020

Organization does not seem to come easily right now. I never seem to have any extra time, so things build up around me. In order to conquer my junk, my friends and I are having little garage sales in front of our offices. I am cleaning out closets and drawers and touching a lot of memories in the process. Today I came across a book, “A Bouquet of Flowers,” that Adelaide Thorpe (‘the purple lady’) had given to me “with love 1995” signed in purple ink, of course. The book was “sweet thoughts, recipes and gifts from the garden with the language of flowers.” Many years ago, Mrs. Thorpe and I bonded over our love of flowers. She would arrive at my office (in her purple car with flowers on the hood ornament) with a sweet card, a word of praise, thanks, and always sincere appreciation for the way I was raising my children. She was kind, gracious and all that was good in the world. Today, I went back and reread her obituary, then took the book over to the new resident of her home and shared this sweet memory. I can only hope that at some point, I have done something  that will be a sweet remembrance that can be shared. That would be the sign of a very, successful life journey.

Note: Drought Contingency restrictions are still in place in LJ until December 15th, but my water started smelling much better last week.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. But most of all, reduce. Canada has a plan to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030. They plan to ban only six commonly used items in 2021; plastic checkout bags, plastic straws, stir sticks, six-pack rings, cutlery, and food-ware made from hard-to-recycle plastics.

Despite a heartbreaking early closure in 2020 and the difficult months that followed, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo remained committed to its mission of promoting agriculture and supporting Texas youth and education, and we hope today’s announcement is a bright spot in a challenging year,” said Chris Boleman, Rodeo president and CEO. “Thanks to the unwavering support from our community, and the resiliency of our dedicated 35,000 volunteers who share a passion for our charitable mission, we are able to reaffirm our promise to the youth of Texas and also lend support to charitable organizations that serve our great community and state.” The Rodeo’s 2021 educational commitment will award more than $14.1 million in scholarships, more than $5 million to junior show exhibitors, $2 million in educational program grants and more than $470,000 toward graduate assistantship programs.

“Dogs, for a reason that can only be described as divine, have the ability to forgive, let go of the past, and live each day joyously. It’s something the rest of us strive for.” Jennifer Skiff

Is an animal a thing or a person? It is a great question because we don’t normally think of animals as things. But if you are working within the context of grammar, then all animals are considered things or nouns. Therefore, dogs are possessions and are treated as property by the law. The following is a quote from Elizabeth Parker. “A dog is not a thing. A thing is replaceable. A dog is not. A thing is disposable. A dog is not. A thing does not have a heart. A dog’s heart is bigger than any “thing” you can ever own.”

Today, I put a note in the mail to my favorite Santa Claus, Mr. Ralph O’Henley. When my kids were little, Santa always showed up on Christmas Eve afternoon with his soft white beard, beautiful embroidered blouse, black belt, boots, and ‘shaking’ his sleigh bells. So much Christmas magic on that one evening. When Santa left to start his deliveries, they pressed their faces to the back window and listened for the bells, then looked up to the sky.  Amazingly enough, they always heard and saw Santa in the sky on his way to the next house. They could unwrap one package under the tree – always new pajamas, the one thing that had them looking their best on Christmas morning. Hmmm. Yes, Ralph O’Henley, friend, and Santa Claus Extraordinaire. Thank you! Readers start making your traditions right now. The years pass too quickly.

The story of Teller started in July, or August, I just do not remember exactly when. On several different occasions, leaving or coming to my office, I had seen a sweet looking, but terribly skinny and mangy dog hanging around downtown LJ. It was always from a distance, but I did not give it much thought, just huge amounts of sympathy for the way he appeared. He was so thin and sad looking. About the 4th or 5th time I spotted him, I decided to stop. He was close to the parking lot of Texas Gulf Bank and I needed to let him know that I was a friend. It was late afternoon, the 16th day of September, and he ended up following me down closer to Dollar General. I would drive my car a few feet, then get out and call, clap, and whistle for him to follow. He did, then we would do it all over again. He never got too close because you could tell he was scared. During this process, I met a young woman named Genesis, both of us bonding in the street over mutual concern for this sad little critter. She stayed with him on a grassy patch near the parking lot, keeping him in her sight while I went to the dollar store to buy treats and dog food. Genesis shared that she had called the city earlier to have him picked up. He ate chicken jerky out of my hand that night.
That evening when I left him on the street (with a water bottle in his mouth), I called my friend Cheryl that works with the SPCA and asked her what I should do. That was the start. It exploded from there. As it turned out the City of Lake Jackson had been trying to nab him for months with no success. He even had a name. He had been branded with the name Teller because…you guessed it, he hung around the banks, so the SPCA thought it was fitting. Cheryl told me to try and get a leash on him because there was a foster home available to take care of him. If we were able to catch him during the day, then we were to call the SPCA, and if it was at night, the police were willing to help us. Well, how hard could this be. He had just eaten chicken out of my hand.  Surely, I could get a leash around a skinny dog’s neck. ha-ha. This was one street smart dog.
Teller was nowhere to be found for three days. Reports came in from friends spotting the humane officer downtown or seeing Teller here and there. I drove around downtown three times a day with fresh packages of food setting on my front seat. Every once-in-a-while I would find and feed him, but he never allowed himself to get any closer than eating out of my hand. I purchased several rubber balls because I believed I could teach him to play, then he would trust me, and I could get him the help he needed. When I would find him, he almost always had either a plastic water bottle or a piece of cardboard in his mouth, like those were his toys. This always made me super sad. So, it was just me in parking lots at night, playing ball with myself, since he never participated…to be continued next week…

I am sorry, but I have been puny this week with a sinus infection. I am going to send this short column back to Tina, then go home and climb in bed. Thank you for reading this and sharing it. We do appreciate you. Remember to Christmas shop LOCAL. They need you.

What I Heard This Week! 01-23-2020

What I Heard This Week January 23, 2020

Borden Dairy (founded in 1857) has filed for bankruptcy, the second major U.S. dairy to do so lately. Dean Foods, America’s largest dairy producer filed in November 2019. People are now drinking almond, soy and oat milk. Protein bars and on-the-go breakfasts have replaced our morning bowl of cereal. Borden says 2,730 U.S. dairy farms have gone out of business in the last 18 months, meaning that the remaining farms can command higher prices. Poor Elsie.

Texans’ J.J.  Watt is scheduled to host Saturday Night Live on February 1, along with musical guest, country artist Luke Combs. Watt will be the 27th athlete to host and the 11th person with NFL experience. Some athletes included LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter, The Rock, John Madden, Wayne Gretzky,  Hulk Hogan, O.J. Simpson, Charles Barkley, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Bill Russell, George Foreman,  Fran Tarkenton, and Alex Karras. J.J. may be what it takes to get me to watch a whole show instead of just pulling up Eddie Murphy clips.

Northern Ireland has now recognized same-sex marriages, but couples reportedly must give 28 days’ notice of their plan to marry, so the first same-sex weddings are expected during the week of Valentine’s Day.

To determine if a coffee pod (think Keurig) is recyclable, look on the packaging for the plastic number. Coffee pods that are recyclable are typically made out of plastic #5, where pods that are not recyclable are made out of plastic #7. Try to avoid purchasing #7 coffee pods since these end up in a landfill. Before tossing, be sure to peel off the aluminum top (trash) and empty the grounds (nature loves the grounds so dump them in your yard or flower bed). If you throw the pod inside a recycling bin before removing the top and coffee grounds, it may no longer be recyclable. This goes for anything you put into recycling. Clean it out first. It was reported that enough Keurig plastic pods were sold in 2014 to circle the world more than ten times. Since this way of drinking coffee has become so much more popular in the past few years, just think of how many pods are now in landfills. It’s estimated that one in three homes in the U.S. have a single-serve coffee maker. We do pour-overs at my house – unbleached paper filters, then we place the filter and spent coffee in our compost. Easy, affordable, Earth-friendly solution.

A woman with dementia survived for six days in her snowbound Suburban in Butte Meadows, California. She stayed warm by periodically turning on the car for heat and bundling up with moving blankets and floor mats.

Sometimes I don’t wear my glasses when I really should…obviously. After midnight last night, I was tidying up before I went to bed. I had been at the kitchen table working on tax stuff for several hours and getting tired, so I took my off glasses. Huge mistake. Anne-Elisabeth had been home for the weekend so there were a few things out of place.I unloaded lunch containers, placed them in the dishwasher along with a coffee cup, then grabbed a glass jar, unscrewed the lid (assuming it was dirty) and turned it upside down as I placed it in the dishwasher. Yikes. The jar had quite a few poppy seeds waiting to be planted in the garden. You know, the ‘tinier than a grain of salt’ seeds? They were scattered throughout the unsmooth bottom of my dishwasher. I could have used tape but then I couldn’t plant them.  I pulled a credit card from my purse and scraped up as many as I could and put them back in the jar. The others were wet (see above…coffee and lunch remains,)so I got as many as I could with wet paper towels and laid them on the cabinet to dry. This morning, I realized the seeds had stuck, so I tore the paper towels into pieces and threw them in my flower bed. Tonight, I will place a little potting soil over each piece and hope for the best. Who knows, they may stay in place and grow even better this year. Last year the rains washed the seeds into the edges of the flower beds. I may be on to ‘something.’

There is a couple getting married in April, I don’t know who they are, but they are asking Habitat for Humanity of Southern Brazoria County to provide a Wedding Registry so their friends and family can contribute to the building of a Habitat home rather than traditional gifts. I LOVE it. Habitat is now working on House #113 in Brazoria County. 113 people are lucky to have all those volunteers build them new homes. If you want to help, call them. They need volunteers and will find you a job that’s perfect for YOU.

Recently I wrote about, “it being time for my kids to go back to school after winter break,”meaning, I love to see them come, I love to see them go. A friend read the column and shared something that one of her friends said years ago. “The best holiday lights were the ones that she saw on back of her kid’s cars as they drove away from the house and back to school.” I just had to repeat this, it’s too funny. Thank you, Emily.

A customer came in today and I was rewriting his pre-written ad for a rental house on the intercoastal canal and it mentioned crabbing. Except he had spelled it with just one ‘b’. After he left, I looked up the word just to be sure I was right. The Urban Dictionary definition for crabbing came up as: “When a man is urinating in a public urinal on his own and he attempts to urinate an equal amount in each urinal by sidestepping like a crab while using hands to control urine distribution.Such asI went into the urinals and there was no one there so I did a bit of crabbing.” We live in a weird world now.

A teenage kid from NY was interning at NASA. Just three days into the job, he discovered a brand-new planet. The old Randalls/Albertsons grocery store (that takes you a tad bit further back in time) will be re-modeled by Olin to use as administrative offices. It’s time. Macy’s was founded 162 years ago in NY and are closing 28 namesake stores and one Bloomingdale’s store. Pier 1 Imports will close 450 of its 936 stores.

Monster Jam is Jan. 25th& Feb. 8-9th in Houston. Brazosport Symphony is Jan. 25th called Covering all Basses. I went to the Hotel California Symphony concert in Oct. and it was great. The symphony is having so much fun this year. Nunsense at The Center for the Arts and Sciences is showing Feb. 21 – March 1.

There is a u-pick tulip farm in San Antonio just south of I-10 that you can visit, but just for a short time because there’s such a short bloom time. There is also a maze for the kids and another tulip farm in Dallas.Texas-tulips.com. Great idea for a Valentines getaway, just pretend it’s Amsterdam.

In case you haven’t already heard, it’s official. 2019 was the second hottest year worldwide in recorded history.  What year was the hottest?  Globally, was 2016. Which brings us to the fact that the past decade was the hottest ever recorded on the planet, driven by an acceleration of temperature increases in the past five years, according to data released ‘jointly’ by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Perhaps releasing information jointly will make a bigger difference to people understanding the problem. Global average surface temperatures last year were 1.8 degrees higher than the average from the middle of last century.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will have Willie Nelson on March 4th. Midland will open on March 3 and Luke Bryan will close the final show. No George Strait this year.

In North Houston, a couple took their 8-year-old cat in for her check-up and rabies vaccine. Because of a mix-up on syringes, Sophie was mistakenly euthanized.  When the mistake was realized, the vet gave her oxygen, fluids to try and flush out her system and epinephrine to get her heart going again but she died. Her cat momma says, “When you take your animal to any vet, not just this particular office, but any Veterinary office, be vigilant, ask questions, ask what their protocols and procedures are.” I can’t even imagine losing any of mine.

Many thoughts have gone through my head as I tried to decide whether to share this story or not. I’m not a fan of The Bachelor, but Hoda and Jenna were discussing a clip from the show this morning. I think it’s funny. OK. You decide. One of the female contestants (Kelsey, 2017 Miss Iowa, 28,) brought a bottle of champagne “all the way from Des Moines, Iowa.” One of the other contestants (Hanna, Alabama model, 23) opened that‘special’bottle of champagne and Kelsey exploded as she confronted the accused contestant, who said, “I’m sorry, I’ll get you another bottle of champagne.” (Surely, we all believe that.) Fast forward and the Bachelor (Peter Weber) offered Miss Iowa a brand-new bottle of champagne with Miss Iowa sitting very, very close to him. She accepts the bottle from him, picks it up and chug-a-lugs straight from the bottle (as she quietly mentions, “I’m not always a classy b****.”  Uhhh, we noticed. I think the proper word for this is a swig. She took a big swig from the bottle. As she prepared to lower the bottle, all those bubbles just gasp to be released, explode, geyser up and spew champagne ALL OVER HER FACE and hair. Hmmm. I’m glad that I can only afford champagne on special occasions because I could be such an embarrassment to my children. 😊

A judge has ordered Google to turn over a year’s worth of Jussie Smollett’s emails, private messages, photographs and location data. A special prosecutor is trying to find out why 16 counts of disorderly conduct charges were abruptly dismissed against the actor after he allegedly staged an attack in downtown Chicago and then lied to police. Smollett maintains his innocence. I’m interested.

On the front page of The Chronicle was a picture of a mother and her 15-year-old son who has been suspended multiple times and she says “there must be a better way” to discipline students in Beaumont ISD.  Students were suspended at a rate more than six times the state average and far more than any other district last year, 46 suspensions per 100 students. Well, you want to know what I think…if that had been me at age 15, I wouldn’t have been able to ‘stand’ next to my mother after the first suspension. Raise your children at home, which is your job, then the teachers can spend their whole class-time teaching, which is their job. It’s disruptive to constantly discipline in the classroom. That’s what I think. Thanks for reading us this week. Be sure to let us know how we are doing.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
