What I Heard This Week 08-17-2023

What I Heard This Week August 16, 2023

Let’s face it. It’s too hot to even get the mail. I’m walking Teller late at night so his little paws don’t get burned. We are such wimps that none of us can do without AC right now. I just heard my third story about friends having their plane departures changed from the middle of the day to early morning. What’s up? Is it related to the heat? Hmmm. I Googled it. Flying when it’s too hot outside can cause performance problems with the planes. Some planes have a maximum operating temperature of 118 degrees, while others can handle 126 degrees. Sometimes it’s not just dangerous, but physically impossible for the plane to take off because of the air density. When the temperatures rise, air density decreases because gas expands and increases the volume of the air. Less density equals less lift. Unfortunately, runways are only so long, usually not long enough for high-temperature take-offs. Just part of our new normal that some people don’t care enough to fix.

We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the Earth as its other creatures do. – Barbara Ward

Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii: As I write this the death toll from the surprise fire is at 106 deaths (and only 5 of those identified because remains are unrecognizable), but according to Hawaii Governor Green, the death toll could double or even triple in the next ten days. With 81 mph winds, it is the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century, over 2,700 structures destroyed and over 1,000 people still missing. Families were burned alive in their cars trying to escape. Water pressure faded and fire hydrants became useless as they ran dry. They are calling it a “Fire Hurricane,” – something new in the age of global warming. Cadaver-sniffing dogs are working where they are allowed after assessing structures and hot spots are cooled down, but the dogs can only work so long because of the heat. Developers (predators) are already trying to buy the damaged fire-ravaged property from the poor people that just lost everything. Talk about evil opportunists.

Have you ever read the Hunger Games novels, considered some of the best apocalyptic (resembling the end of the world; momentous or catastrophic) and dystopian (relating to or denoting an imagined state or society where there is great suffering or injustice) young adult novels? You should read them.

Dear Parent: If you promise not to believe everything your child says happened at school, I’ll promise not to believe everything he says happened at home. Signed, The Teacher

With kids leaving for college, here are a few important questions you should always ask a potential roommate. Do you foresee any time during our lease that you might have trouble paying your part? Will we split the cost of food, or each be responsible for our own? Are you allergic to any food? How much time do you like to be in shared space? Sleep schedule? How often do you clean and how/what do you clean? How often will you want to have your friends and others over? Are they going to sleep over? (Very important question.)  Do you think you’ll want a pet in the future? Are you allergic to any animals? How do you relax after a hard day or week of studying? How do you feel about borrowing each other’s clothes? What is your modesty level? Do you mind if someone stays in their pajamas all day or walks around in a robe? Or less? What temperature do you like to keep the thermostat? After having two kids and ten years of their roommates, believe me, all questions are necessary.

Darling, put the martini down and stop high-fiving the other mothers. Some people are actually sad to see their kids go back to school.

A ten-year-old boy was found concealed inside a garbage can in the garage of his mother’s home in Illinois. He had been dead since around December 2022. A preliminary autopsy revealed the boy died from a gunshot wound. The boy’s 37-year-old mother was arrested.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Blues guitarist Buddy Guy is 87. Singer Paul Anka is 82. Diana, Lonely Boy, Put Your Head on My Shoulder, and (You’re) Having My Baby. FACEBOOK:
I was in Walmart using the restroom and just as I closed my stall door, a voice from the next stall said, “Hi! How are you?”
Embarrassed… I said, “I’m ok!”
The voice said, “So what are you up to?”
I said, “Ummm… just trying to handle a little private business over here!”
Then I hear, “Can I come over?”
Annoyed… I said, “Excuse me?!?!.”
Then the voice said, “Listen, I will have to call you back, there’s an idiot in the next stall answering all my questions!
(Sorry, but I have heard people talking with earbuds in, and thought they were speaking to me…)

A mother of four (a nice positive momma, not a slacker) was called to jury duty in Utah. Her babysitter was on vacation, so she explained that to the court, but they wanted her to show up anyway, or there would be a $1,000 fine. Hmmm. So, she did! In order to participate in her civic duties while lacking childcare, she arrived with her 18-month-old TRIPLETS and her 5-year-old daughter. Torry Scow said, “I told my husband, ‘Don’t worry about it. I bet if I just take them, they’ll probably see me and send me right home. It’ll be fine.’ ” They kept her for two and a half more hours, then dismissed her to go home.

It’s so hot you can wash and dry your clothes at the same time.

One day while shopping, I came across some really pretty felt coasters marked down to $5.00 for four. I threw them in the basket because I hate sweaty glasses on my table. When I got home, I opened the “almost-naked” packaging that stated they’re recyclable, moisture resistant, thermos protective to 400F, protects surfaces and is made of vegan felt. Whoa. Vegan felt? Felt is made from wool and wool comes from sheep. I realize that no animals were harmed in the making this felt, but why do companies now throw around words that make us feel like we are saving the Earth. Natural, sustainable, biodegradable, eco-friendly, the list of words is plenty. Upon closer examination, I saw Made in China, 100% Polyester printed on the skinny packaging. I had been HAD. Read packaging before placing in basket.

There’s a new COVID strain and his/her/their name is Eris aka EG.5, and this subvariant is dominating the U.S. at the moment, expecting to increase around Sept. or Oct. A Burn Ban was issued for Brazoria County on August 10th. It’s time. PLEASE don’t do anything stupid where we end up running for Surfside. Thank you to Ruth, Lancome Sale Associate at Dillard’s. Sweet lady. Nancy for the It Was Always a Cape coffee cup. Love it. Mary for the lemon pasta. Hayman for the okra. Aunt Tina for babysitting Teller. Great people in my life.
Remember: Kindness matters.

What I Heard This Week 08-25-2022

What I Heard This Week August 24, 2022

Only 10% of people are left-handed. The uniqueness is believed to be determined from the mother’s womb, where testosterone levels play a vital role. Some advantages of being left-handed are: 1. Better multitasking skills because both sides of the brain are used to adjust in a right-handed world. 2. Higher Prodigies’ Percentage, meaning they are smarter, there again because they use both sides of their brains, which makes them smarter. 3. Higher Vision Adjustability Underwater. I don’t know how that helps except maybe as their eyes adjust, they can see the sharks coming faster than their fellow swimmers. 4. Earn more. Research has proven that most left-handed males who have enrolled in college earn about 13% more than their right-hand friends. 5. Better in sports because of the added benefit of people not accustomed to their different ways/techniques of playing. 6. Better at video games and can type faster. 7. Enhanced memory. Hmmm. You can definitely tell that I’m right-handed. 8. Lefties are much better in driving school despite the fact that every car design is for right-handers. 9. They recover faster from strokes because their non-dominant hand is better than their right-handed friends. Sounds like we need to do brain exercises where we use our left hand all day long no matter how bad our writing looks (and it does look bad.) What were we talking about?

Some of the world’s super-rich are funding a massive treasure hunt (helicopters and transmitters) on the west coast of Greenland since the ice is melting at a very rapid rate, exposing ground that has been concealed under the ice for as long as millennia (1000 years) and could now serve as a site for mineral exploration… precious metals copper, gold, rare-earth elements, and zinc, necessary for electric cars.

Viola Davis is set to play a warped villain in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the Hunger Games prequel. She will star as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, Head Gamemaker of the 10th Annual Hunger Games. It will be based on Suzanne Collins’ 2020 novel and will arrive in theaters November 17, 2023. I loved reading those books and then watching the movies with my kids. That was the rule with my kids… read the book, then we went to opening night at the movie theater, standing in line for hours with the other fans. It was fun. For those that enjoyed the books or movies, the official synopsis reads, “Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor.”

Starbucks has a replacement in Russia – it’s called Stars Coffee and the logo looks just like Starbucks. Hmmm.  In place of the Starbucks mermaid, Stars Coffee’s logo is using a woman wearing a traditional Russian headdress called a kokoshnik. Starbucks closed 130 stores following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, then pulled out completely in May, selling all 130 Starbucks to a group of three that includes a Russian rapper known as Timati. Russia’s rebranded McDonald’s, which is running out of Coke (because Coca-Cola also left the country) and can’t use the words Happy Meal, is trademarking TochkaCola and Kids Combo as replacements. Nine miles off the coast of Italy, a video showed a 131-foot superyacht sinking in the Mediterranean Sea. All passengers and crew members were saved. There have always been giant dinosaur prints (dating back just 113 million years) in the riverbed of the Paluxy River at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas. When I lived there, we had great parties on those riverbanks. So many tracks that have normally been hidden under water and mud, are now exposed in the new drought-dry riverbank. Really good ones. What a great week-end trip to take your children or grandchildren. The Dallas Cowboys became the first NFL franchise to receive a valuation of $8 billion.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Singer Jackie DeShannon is 81. One of the leading pop composers of the 1960s, her signature tune was “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.” Newsman Harry Smith is 71. Singer Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple & Black Sabbath is 70. Actor Kim Cattrall of Sex and the City is 66. Actor Cindy Williams of Laverne and Shirley is 75. Guitarist David Marks of The Beach Boys is 74. Singer Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys is 49. Actor Ann Archer is 73. Actor Vera Miles is 90. Psycho. Actor Tom Skerritt is 89. Singer Rob Halford of Judas Priest is 71. Keyboardist Geoff Downes of Asia is 70. Discovered by Sammy Davis Jr., he is best known for his 1965 recording of Red Roses for a Blue Lady. Director Tim Burton is 64.

Singer Valerie Simpson of Ashford and Simpson is 77. Singer Bob Cowsill of The Cowsills is 73. Bandleader Branford Marsalis is 62. Guitarist Jimmy Olander of Diamond Rio is 61. Actor Macaulay Culkin is 42. Home Alone. Actor Tuesday Weld is 79. Actor Paul Reubens of Pee-Wee Herman is 70. Guitarist Alex Lifeson of Rush is 69. Singer Ian Gillan of Deep Purple is 77. John Deacon of Queen is 71. Actor Adam Arkin is 66. Singer-songwriter Gary Chapman is 65. Guitarist James Burton who played with Elvis Presley is 83. Musician Elvis Costello is 68. Singer Vic Dana is 82. Newsman Morton Dean is 87.

Poor Bed Bath & Beyond. Shares sank 16% on reports that some suppliers have stopped shipping products because of late payments, just days after one of its largest shareholders dumped his entire stake. My daughter and I shopped there for college because her dad had given her a gift certificate. We got some great deals – even better than advertised when we got to the register. Isn’t it interesting how some super successful businesses have made a complete turnaround in the past five years. Don’t you ever wonder how the small family-owned businesses are making it when even the BIG stores are struggling right now? The next time you get ready to order a gift on Amazon (yes, I know you order from Amazon), why don’t you try Grapevine Gifts or Forever Treasures in LJ, or how about Lady Bug and Carta Valley in WC. I dare you to tell me that you can’t find something awesome when you SHOP LOCAL and help these small businesses stay in business. It’s up to you. Please read on.

Amazon’s acquisition of businesses continues. On August 5th, the company announced they will purchase (for $1.7 billion) iRobot, the manufacturer of Roomba, the popular robotic vacuum cleaner that wanders around my house sucking up dirt and scaring the cats and dog. Hmmm. Now why does Jeff Bezos need to own Roomba. Was he tired of walking on dirty floors. Nah. Now Amazon has a detailed map of everyone’s home that owns a Roomba. I have one and I love it! His name is Cousin Greg and I adore him. Millions of homes have them. But it’s a company built on mapping the inside of people’s homes. Now if you don’t think that’s a little creepy…  data-privacy experts say it is the most dangerous, threatening acquisition in the company’s history. Oh, and by the way, Amazon also owns my doorway at my home because I have a Ring doorbell, too. Do you have Alexa? Yep, Amazon owns her, too.

The historic Battleship Texas will sail from its La Porte home to the Gulf Copper Shipyard in Galveston for necessary repairs on August 31. The Battleship Texas Foundation is working on a plan so visitors can still see the ship while it is dry-docked at pier 21. Pumps were installed that will be used during towing to limit the ship’s water intake from leaks, and in May crews removed about 23,000 cubic yards of mud from the stern around the ship to clear a path for towing into the Houston Ship Channel. There is not a permanent home planned after the repairs, but they know it won’t be returned to LaPorte where it called home since 1948.

The first news article said a giant slide in Detroit closed the same day it opened, after children were getting a little too much air-time and bounce as they came down the slide. The news report the next day, said the children were catapulted into the air while attempting to slide down. The video showed some very happy, laughing children that when asked if they wanted to go again, said NO. The word catapulted seems so much different than too much air-time.

Denial must be my middle name, and I seem to use it often when I start thinking about storm season. Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, but historically, most storms occur between August and October when the Atlantic Ocean is at its warmest, therefore creating the most perfect conditions. There are two systems that forecasters are watching this week in the Atlantic, but if they do nothing, then this could be just the third August since 1961, and the first August since 1997, without a named storm. Dry air, Saharan dust and wind shear are the main reasons no named storms have developed recently, and only three, Alex, Bonnie and Colin, have developed so far this season.

I cannot continue to be a part of a political party that is okay with a violent attempt to overturn a free and fair election and continues to peddle claims that the 2020 election was stolen.” Colorado State Senator Kevin Priola announcing he is leaving the Republican Party and becoming a Democrat.

Somehow, through some crazy sort of thought process (yes, sometimes I scare myself), I Googled Leon Russell and listened to his, A Song for You. It’s so beautiful, slow, grieving pleas for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover. The words are everything you always wanted to hear from the person that has pained you or ‘done you wrong’ in a relationship, but you didn’t get. I guess I was surprised to find out that the song has been covered by more than 200 artists including Andy Williams, The Carpenters, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Ray Charles & Willie Nelson & Leon Russell together, Herbie Hancock & Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and even Amy Winehouse, a soulful version that was released after her death. If you get a chance, pull it up on YouTube. Sometimes we forget that the most magical music was recorded in the 1970’s.

Ford is cutting 3,000 jobs as it prepares to shift from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. Ethan, a little 1-1/2-year-old boy was chasing and playing with drifting bubbles when he found a missing 82-year-old woman with early-stage Alzheimer’s. He told his momma, “Feet,” after spotting the woman in the woods nearby. His mom looked but couldn’t see anything until she crouched down to Ethan’s level, and it was then that she saw a pair of feet poking out from the overgrown trees. Nina Lipscomb had been missing for 4-days. Dr. Fauci is retiring! I can’t wait to see what wonderful things he does in this new chapter of his life. Bet it’s fabulous. In celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 96th birthday, Mattel released the limited-edition Platinum Jubilee Doll (Barbie), which sold out in a day. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park announced the birth of a southern white rhino. His first-time mother is Livia, and he was conceived through natural breeding. He really is so ugly, he’s cute.

The mailman said, “My doctor asked me if I had any symptoms of Mailman’s Disease. I told him, no, I’m just a carrier.”

Scientists have discovered that dogs cry tears of joy when reunited with their owners. Victoria’s has a new first male celebrity brand ambassador. His name is Darren Barnet, and he will promote Pink’s Gender Free collection. The Biden administration has proposed to standardize about 500,000 electric vehicle chargers across the US so they can work with any electric vehicle, similar to the way a gas pump works with any car or truck.  On my way to work today, I noticed that Oyster Creek is already rising, and it looks like we have quite a few days of rain ahead of us, so be sure to read a good book or cook a great meal. Remember life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Have a great week.

What I Heard This Week! 07-04-2019

What I Heard This Week July 4, 2019

In Marietta, Georgia, more than 300 families decorated their mailboxes then had a block party in honor of their mailman’s retirement. Floyd Martin, 61, had been delivering their mail for 35 years. They said that Mr. Floyd always had lollipops for their kids and treats for the cats and dogs, along with a smile and a wave for the homeowners. He even brought newspapers to the front doors of the elderly.  One preschooler dressed up like Mr. Floyd on career day. Oh, yes. This appreciative neighborhood also started a Go Fund Me page that to date has raised over $32,000 so they can send their mailman to Hawaii on his dream vacation. After Delta Airlines heard about this hometown hero, they decided to fly him to Hawaii for free. See, it does pay to be nice. Mr. Floyd says, “Continue to take care of each other, and smile when you think of me.” Nice story.

Use your imagination here…Snoopy is sitting on top of his doghouse with his typewriter. He smiles and the thought bubble says, “What a great title for my new book…” Next thought bubble says, “Things I’ve learned after it was too late.”  Readers…the story of our lives…things we’ve learned after it was too late.

Last year 2018, donations and charitable giving by individuals in America suffered the biggest drop in ten years. I know it hasn’t been a good situation in our own community for non-profits since Harvey, but I didn’t realize it was across the United States. Give when you can…your time or your money.

Tim McGraw and Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential biographer Jon Meacham, have together, written a book, “Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest and The Music That Made a Nation.” Their current book tour is a mixture of songs and lectures on American history, culture and the impact that music has had on American politics.

I am a devoted fan of the first three “Hunger Games” books – ‘The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay’ have sold more than 100 million copies and have been translated into more than 50 languages. When my kids were younger, I always pre-read their teen and pre-teen books, so I could first determine if they were age appropriate and second, so I would have something in common with them for conversation. After the books, Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland and others helped bring the movies to life. We saw all four movies, sometimes standing in line for hours at midnight releases. Today I read that a decade after wrapping it all up, author Suzanne Collins is now working on a prequel, set 64 years before the beginning of her multi-million-selling trilogy and the book is to be published May 19, 2020. No word yet on whether an agreement for film rights has been reached but I would bet an absolute YES.

Miss Everdeen. It’s the things we love most that destroy us.” President Snow in Hunger Games

Recently, Target had a weekend register glitch. Super long checkout lines formed, and some customers had to either pay with cash or leave without their purchases.  Frustration, chaos, venting on social media, abandoned shopping carts and apologies ensued. Everything was ok until a few days later when Target experienced another credit card/register outage that lasted about 90 minutes, which was reported to be unrelated to the previous problem. It was the day before Father’s Day, and you know what last minute shopping is like before those occasions. The impact won’t show up until the retailer discloses quarterly revenue in August, but it could cost Target as much as $50 million in lost sales. It’s sad that we have become a society of impatience which is a major cause of unhappiness in our world.

When we get impatient because something is taking too long, we should remember that Life waits on us a thousand times more than we wait on Life.”  Laura Teresa Marquez

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Actress June Lockhart is 94. Lassie and Lost in Space. TV personality Phyllis George is 70. Miss America 1971. Movie producer Robert Evans is 89. He was married to Phyllis George for a year, Catherine Oxenberg for less than that…also Ali MacGraw and so many other beautiful women.

Former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos is 90. About 260 people were sent to the hospital vomiting and dizzy from food poisoning during her lavish 90th birthday celebration. Rock musician David Paich is 65. Toto. Actor Gary Busey is 75. The Buddy Holly Story. Rock singer Colin Hay is 66. Men at Work. Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of former President Lyndon B. Johnson is 72. Rock musician Roy Bittan is 70. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band.

Lee Iacocca  was an American automobile executive best known for the development of Ford Mustang and Pinto cars while at the Ford Motor Company in the 1960s, and then later for reviving the Chrysler Corporation with the minivan as he served as President and CEO from 1978 until his retirement at the end of 1992. He was a marketing genius that died this week at 94.

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” Robert Brault

Joe Perricone missed his own graduation from high school when he was called up to serve in WWII. So, this year his grandson secretly arranged for the 95-year-old to not only get his diploma but to march with the other graduates at graduation. He said, “I started to make some calls, and the stars just aligned. It was great seeing him grin when he walked across the stage. He was very happy.” So much nice in the world.

If this doesn’t scare you, then you can’t be scared. Just north of Mexico City, there was a freak hailstorm that dropped several feet of ice pellets. Not just a storm, but in some areas as much as 6 FEET of hail came down. In Mexico. Where the daytime temperature that day was 88. Homes and cars were damaged. Climate change? Nah…

If you don’t talk to your cat about catnip. Who will?

Winners of the 2019 Tony Awards were announced at Radio City Music Hall last month. The awards are named after Antoinette “Tony” Perry, co-founder of the American Theatre Wing. Top prizes went to Hadestown with eight wins including Best Musical and The Ferryman with four wins including Best Play. Lead acting winners included Stephanie J. Block for The Cher Show, Santino Fontana for Tootsie, Elaine May for The Waverly Gallery and Bryan Cranston for Network.

There have been quite a few movies made about musicians. ‘Walk the Line’ starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as Johnny Cash and June Carter. ‘Love & Mercy’ with Paul Dano and John Cusack as Brian Wilson. ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ with Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner and Angela Bassett as Tina Turner.  Then there is Michael Douglas as Liberace in ‘Behind the Candelabra.’  One of my favorites, Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles. I loved Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn in ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter.’ ‘I’m Not There’ with Cate Blanchett portraying Bob Dylan at one point in his life. There was a lot of discussion since she was a woman and Bob Dylan is not. Which brings me to the story I heard today…a Boy George biopic is in the works and the singer would love it if Sophie Turner would play him. You know the beautiful blond that just finished in Game of Thrones and has married Joe Jonas twice. Yep, I looked at a picture of her and it could work. Turner wrote on Twitter, “I’m SO down.” Interesting.

Did you see the video of the young woman opening a half-gallon container of Blue Bell Ice Cream, licking the contents, replacing the lid then putting it back on the store freezer shelf, laughing the whole time. Then she walked away. Hmmm. You already know what I think. I sure hope they find the licker and the camera person that was filming the video. Some things are just hard to believe. I don’t even know what punishment would/should be in a situation like this – one person stated that they both need to eat a half gallon in a very short period of time and experience brain freeze. Nah. I’m meaner than that. I bet her mother never took a wooden spoon to her backside when she was growing up. Blue Bell says that during production, the half gallons are flipped upside-down and sent to a hardening room where the ice cream freezes to the lid creating a natural seal.

A sequel to ‘The Bodyguard’ almost happened. Kevin Costner says that he received the script for the film the day before Princess Diana was killed in a car wreck in Paris. Yes, Princess Diana was very interested in taking on her first acting role.  Hmmm.

Human Resources: Did you call an employee here stupid? Me: Of course not. I ASKED if she WAS stupid?

Longhorn Steakhouse is now serving Steak and Bourbon Ice Cream. Steak infused ice cream with Longhorn’s Char seasoning spice blend, ribbons of bourbon caramel, whipped cream and steak sprinkles along with what looked like a little piece of beef jerky stuck on top for decoration. $3.99 at select locations including Houston. Sounds delicious to me.

Sotheby’s auction house has been purchased by French Israeli telecommunications entrepreneur Patrick Drahi for a reported $3.7 billion. This acquisition returns the only publicly traded major auction house to private ownership after 31 years on the NY Stock Exchange.

A Hawaiian company is hoping to build an underwater farm a mile from shore and in depths between 600 to 2,000 feet.  They believe that with the nutrient-rich water they can produce large quantities of edible seaweed called Limu which is used in poke, a traditional Hawaiian dish of diced raw fish which is very delicious. Try Seaside Poke in Houston. Anne-Elisabeth and I ate there last week and it’s so good.

In the past few weeks, our community has lost quite a few genuinely good and inspiring people, best citizens and caregivers of our lovely community. Alan Miller (60) was a hairdresser, delightful friend to many, amazing dad, and business owner of Cut-Ups for the past 23 years. He was a kind, first-rate individual and will be missed by many. Now, If I was told I could only use one word to describe Claire Nichols, it would be ‘cute.’ Claire was the busiest of business owners, starting with Claire’s Cross-Stitch Cottage in Jones Creek, then she opened Claire’s Place in Angleton, where she specialized in snow cones and good food. Most recently she and her husband sold Cook’s portable buildings, where Claire was awarded the ‘state-wide highest sales in Texas’ along with special recognition for $1 million in sales. Yep. She was cute. Lucilla Henderson was a terrific mom. Over the years, when we met, our discussions seemed to gravitate towards our children. One of us usually had at least one kid that we were dragging along behind us whether it was business or pleasure. She was a busy employee with Brazos Mall and TDECU, and tremendous volunteer who helped willingly with Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Brazosport College and so much more. Simply put, I admired her and always walked away thinking to myself, “what a lovely person Lucilla Henderson is.”  I didn’t even know she was sick, so it came as quite a surprise. My thoughts and prayers are with these families during this difficult time.

If you have the power to make someone happy, do it. The world needs more of that. Happy 4th. Lisa

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
