What I Heard This Week 01-26-2023

What I Heard This Week January 25, 2023

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine’s Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his “personal romantic relationships” by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin.Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, Tang sucks.

Let’s talk about weddings. Did you know: the average cost of a wedding in 2021 was $28,000 according to The Knot. A separate study from The Wedding Report says that after surveying 1,699 individuals, it was determined that the average cost of a wedding last year was $27,000. There is now a financial services platform called Maroo that gives couples the option of a buy-now – pay-later program, like putting your wedding on lay-a-way or an installment plan. Then the vendors pay a fee of a percentage of the total wedding cost. Personally, I don’t really believe people should go into debt for a wedding, but many do. Aren’t we supposed to be aware of the dangers of spending before earning?

I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together. Marilyn Monroe

As you may remember, I live with Teller the Wonder Dog who sheds red hair by the bucket-full. Then there’s Sully, Winnie, and Oliver Twist, the cats. Sometimes I have to sticky-roller my sheets before I climb into bed at night (because I’m allergic to cats). The sweet babies wait until I lock the door behind me in the mornings, then they run straight for my bed. There was also a time when I wore black clothing almost every single day. Needless to say, I now shop for performance fabric and easy to clean clothing. Hailey and I were talking at the office, and she suggested I try the Bounce Pet Hair & Lint Guard Mega Dryer Sheets. They’re pet hair fighters. Now, it’s not perfect but it is certainly better than it was, making life a whole lot easier. The sheets really help. I just don’t know what my life would be without them, and my Roomba. If you have pets, try them. Target and Walmart have them.

After just three hours of deliberation, the January 6th rioter from Arkansas, Richard “Bigo” Barnett, was convicted of all eight charges he faced, including interfering with a police officer, obstructing an official proceeding, and remaining in a restricted building with a dangerous weapon. If you remember, he is the one that posed for photos with his feet on the desk of Nancy Pelosi, leaving her a note that stated, “Nancy, Bigo was here bitch.”  Hmmm. “That’s how I sit at my desk at home,” Mr. Barnett said of his famous photo of him in Mrs. Pelosi’s office. “It’s such a habit for me to do that…it’s not nearly as bad as it looked.” He also brought a Hike n’ Strike, a hiking stick containing a 950,000 Volt stun device with spike electrodes, which he said wasn’t working on the day of the riot. He will be sentenced in May.

Texas Children’s Hospital recently published a full-page advertisement in The Houston Chronicle to congratulate J.J. Watt on his retirement. It said: Texas Children’s Hospital is happy to congratulate J.J. Watt on retirement after a life-changing career on and off the field. Throughout the years, the former Houston Texan has provided more than just entertainment for our patients, he’s provided lifelong memories. From surprise visits dressed as Batman, to toys and tickets to games – J.J. Watt’s influence reaches far beyond the stadium. Congratulations, we can’t wait to see what you do next. Pepsi is replacing Sierra Mist with Starry, a new lemon-lime soda with a balanced, cleaner, crisp finish, designed to rival Sprite and win over the Gen Z market. It’s caffeine-free and available in regular and zero-sugar varieties, and with higher citrus flavors. I can honestly say that I have never had a Sierra Mist so I have no idea what we will be missing.

OOOh, I just read this. If you need a bigger Ziploc bag, then turn one inside out and connect it with the locking strips to another bag of the same size. Bingo, you just doubled the size of your bag.

About 21 years ago, Nick Day proposed to his girlfriend with a beautiful engagement ring, then she accidentally flushed it down the toilet the day before their wedding. The couple searched, even climbing into the septic tank, then pumping everything through a strainer, but still no ring. About two months ago, his mother hired a plumber to put in a new toilet and the plumber found the ring. That’s a nice ending to a fairytale.

Don’t forget the 50th anniversary of Brazoria County Day 2023 in Austin. Sponsors are still needed. debbiep@eda-bc.com or 979-848-0560. Since all events are underwritten, attendees do not have a fee. What a wonderful way to showcase your business or your community support.

The advertisement says: Like Chips & Queso, Beer & Barbecue and Burgers & Fries, we just belong together. Houston Boat Show & Houston Auto Show. 1 ticket gets you 2 shows. January 25th – 29th. NRG Center. autoboativeShow.com

As I said, I have three cats, two rescued from Harvey when they were almost 3 weeks, and the 6-month-old that was dumped in front of my office, after the driver knowingly carried him all the way over from Wild Peach in the engine of her SUV one evening. Anyway, I had experimented with every litter and litterbox I could find… I even mixed different litter, trying to find just the right combination that didn’t stink and wasn’t messy, and clumped properly. We even built our own litter box that used pressed wood pellets. When Oliver went through his recent UTI problems and then surgery, a friend let me borrow a Breeze Litter System by Tidy Cats. Pellets that don’t clump but absorb the odor and dry the poop out for easy scooping.  There is a pad at the bottom where the tinkle goes. I can’t say enough about this system, especially since I have three cats. As one cat parent to another… it’s terrific. No, I’m not being paid to tell you this.

The winner of the $1.35B Mega Millions ticket that sold in Maine has not come forward yet. Can you imagine? A friend and I were out to dinner the Friday 13th evening of the drawing, so when we left the restaurant, I drove us straight to Busy Bee and we threw away a $twenty, just in case the stars were lined up that evening. Note: My stars WERE NOT lined up properly that evening.  😊 But a Maryland woman won $25,000 from a Pick 5 Lottery drawing having won $25,000 with another Pick 5 game just last year. She said she had played Pick 3 and Pick 4 for several years, then decided to add Pick 5 into her routine. Her stars were lined up.

A mattress reviewing company, Sleep Junkie, is looking for five “Dairy Dreamers” for a $1000 paid study about consuming cheese products before going to sleep. They will be asked to track their sleep and provide written evaluations of their sleep quality, energy level throughout the day and reports on dreams and nightmares after consuming various cheese products before going to sleep. Applications are being accepted through Feb. 10th. $1000 and I know you like cheese.

A snake escaped from its terrarium home in a 6th grade classroom at a Kentucky school. The science teacher said he just didn’t put the lid on securely. Three months went by, and despite the discovery of a snakeskin in the classroom, there were no sightings of Gummy Worm until early January (three months) when they found the corn snake wrapped around a heater under a sink after students returned from the holiday break, just a few feet away from her former terrarium home. Gummy Worm now has a heavier lid.

Jeremy Renner says his snowplow injury resulted in 30 broken bones. Britney Spears announced she has changed her name to River Red. Hmmm. Rojo Rio. The Wiggles (Fruit Salad) have a hot new member named John Pearce that moms are swooning over. He’s the purple Wiggle, and now women across America are thinking about having more children or even buying concert tickets this Christmas for their adult children. He’s pretty cute. Exactly three years ago, the first known case of Covid-19 was reported in the US. In China there is a place widely known as China’s North Pole. Temperatures there on the first day of the Lunar New Year dropped to MINUS -53C – their coldest ever recorded. That temperature can cause frostbite in as little as five minutes. Have a great weekend and thanks for reading us. We appreciate you.

What I Heard This Week! 06-06-2019

What I Heard This Week June 6, 2019

In Honor of D-DayIt was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. With years of brilliant planning and heroic sacrifices, on June 6, 1944 more than 156,000 young American, British and Canadian soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, France in a bold strategy to push the Nazis out of Western Europe, which proved to be a critical turning point in WWII. There were 6,939 ships and landing vessels, 2,395 aircraft and 867 gliders that delivered airborne troops. The U.S. military shipped 7 million tons of supplies including 450,000 tons of ammunition. Troops and supplies were in place by May, but bad weather delayed the launch date of the invasion. On June 5th, General Dwight D. Eisenhower decided that the invasion would happen the next day.

“This operation is not being planned with any alternatives. This operation is planned as a victory, and that’s the way it’s going to be. We’re going down there, and we’re throwing everything we have into it, and we’re going to make it a success.” General Dwight D Eisenhower commenting on D-Day.

A Pasadena family is REALLY upset because the graduation cake that they picked up from Walmart was made from Styrofoam. The interview with the family showed the mother in tears because “it ruined the perfect graduation party that she had planned for her daughter.” I had just finished writing about D-Day where thousands upon thousands of men lost their lives, then to watch a woman cry over something as insignificant as a cake. I can’t imagine this being anything but an honest mistake on the part of Walmart. At my house, a Styrofoam cake would be celebrated. Wasn’t it awfully light when she picked it up?

Remains found in Arkansas have been positively identified as those of Maleah Davis, the 4-year-old Houston child that was reported missing on May 4th by her mother’s boyfriend, Derion Vence.  Vence told police that he, Maleah and his 2-year-old son were abducted by three men in a blue Chevy truck. He originally said he was knocked out and when he regained consciousness, Maleah and the family’s car were gone. Vence was arrested seven days later for tampering with evidence. There were reports of allegations of physical abuse last year after Maleah suffered a head injury, so she and her brother had been removed from the home and stayed in CPS Custody until February. Shame on the mother for allowing this to happen when she knew there was a problem. I hope she is charged, too.

Dear kids. Summer break is here. We all know that you only eat once or twice while you are in school. So, why do you act like you have to eat 4 to 5 times a day when you are home on break. Close the refrigerator and use your “in school” stomach. Love, your parents.

“Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing.Phyllis Diller

A man walked in the back door of his home in Massachusetts and smelled cleaning chemicals, then saw a normally open door, closed. When he realized that his son’s room was clean (this would be a dead giveaway at my house), he immediately called the police.Nothing was stolen.  Nothing was out of place. Someone had just come in and cleaned the house, made the beds, vacuumed, scrubbed the toilets and folded toilet paper roses and placed them on top of the roll. The homeowner now thinks that ‘perhaps’ he forgot to lock the back door and a cleaning service accidently went to the wrong address. Hey, I’ll cough up my address if it would mean that my house would be sparkling clean when I arrived home. No questions asked. 😊

“The French Fry did not become America’s most popular vegetable until industry took over the jobs of washing, peeling, cutting, and frying the potatoes – and cleaning up the mess.”  Michael Pollan

Singer songwriter Leon Redbone died at 69. He specialized in whimsical old-school vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley-style music. Remember Saturday Night Live, great suits, hats and whistling… ‘Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone’

When a mom couldn’t find an affordable pair of size-18 shoes for her 13-year-old son, she reached out on Instagram to Shaquille O’Neal (shoe size 23). He responded by enlisting the help of Friedman’s Shoes, a retailer specializing in large sizes, that had once given O’Neal shoes when he was a teen. He paid it forward and supplied the teen with 10 new pairs of shoes. What a great story.

Dollar Tree announced it will start selling alcohol at approximately 1,000 of its Family Dollar stores in the U.S. According to Wikipedia, there are 14,835 stores throughout 48 states and Canada. (Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar in 2015.) At Dollar Tree stores, they plan to expand freezers and coolers in 400 of the stores and will sell items that cost more than $1, part of a test called Dollar Tree Plus.

Interesting Father’s Day Gift Ideas: These are all real gifts, some strange, perhaps a little different because there are all kinds of dads out there…bouquets of Beef Jerky (it’s really cute), Unicorn Taco Holder (think ‘My Little Pony’ carrying a taco – definitely a winner for dads with daughters under the age of 5), 360-Degree Automotive Security Camera (pretty cool), Onesie Tuxedo (for dads that party in their sleep), Pokémon Ball Waffle Iron, Portable Pizza Oven, Preserved Poop from Silver Charm, the Hall of Fame thoroughbred that ran in the Kentucky Derby in 1997,Claritag Skin Tag Removal Device, Portable Solar Generator (great for campers), Darth Vader Blazer (for the dads that ‘think’ they are the Supreme Commanders of their Empires), and my very favorite…the Kangaroo Pouch Shirt (so cute, perfect for new dads-to-be). It may be easier to just Shop Local.

A 27-year-old Florida man was arrested after throwing an ear of corn at his mother. Hmmm.Dawn is betting that she gave him an earful. 😊

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, 54, has completed his prison sentence for illicit online contact with a 15-year-old girl. He was ordered to register as a sex offender but is considered to have a low risk of reoffending. He still faces three years of court supervision after pleading guilty in May 2017 to transferring obscene material to a minor.

I reminded you last week that J.J. Watt is engaged and ‘off the market,’ so today I’m letting you know that there is still hope, because Property Brothers star, Jonathan Scott, revealed that if he is still single at 45, he’ll adopt a child and raise it as a single dad.In a recent interview with Entrepreneur Magazine he stated,“I have said to myself that if I don’t find the right person, I think I would probably adopt on my own, because I think I would be a great dad.” Jonathan also said in the same article that he’d dated ‘every kind of person you can imagine’ but was now ready to settle down and find ‘the one’. Hmmm.

SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment is offering free admission for U.S. military veterans and their families at San Antonio, Orlando and San Diego parks as part of theWaves of Honor program which salutes active-duty military and veterans. You must redeem your complimentary single-day ticket before June 9th, which will be valid through July 15th, for military/veterans and up to three dependents. www.WavesofHonor.com.

Some churches asked congregations to ‘give up convenience’ this year for Lentsingle-use plastics such as shopping bags, drinking straws, water bottles, Styrofoam and food containers. I wonder how that turned out.

In North Carolina, someone stole a ‘unique’ van with the company logo that belonged to the Unknown Brewing Co. The smart people at the brewery didn’t waste any time before they posted this on Facebook, “(Three) fine individuals stole one of our vans early this AM. Please help us find it. Share with all of your friends. Whoever finds it, Brad (owner) will buy you a keg party. If you stole it and bring it back: You will also get a keg party. (Smile for the camera.)” Over 15 people called in with tips. It took 42 minutes before a woman posted a photo of the van on Instagram as proof that she had found it. Hmmm. A Shock Top Beer vehicle parks in front of my office quite often…but as I look out my front window, I see the Nestle “water” truck – I just don’t think it would have the same effect.

I made myself a note to mention this a couple of weeks ago before the celebratory releasing of balloons for graduation ceremonies, but I pulled it to decrease the size of my column.  Then today, I saw a post from Stephanie Jess about a turtle that was wrapped up in the strings of balloons and struggling on the beach when it was found. Mark balloons off your list of special things to do. We are wasting our short supply of helium and it’s not good for our Earth or the people or animals that live here. It’s like throwing trash out the window. They ARE NOT biodegradable and end up on the ocean floor or in the stomachs of hungry fish and mammals that believe they are delicious jelly fish.

Costco has 458 diamond rings listed on their site, costing between $99.99 to $419,999.99 for a 10-carat diamond platinum solitaire. It is reported that a shopper recently spent over $400,000.00 on a purchase of one of these rings. Wow. I shop for dishwashing soap, laundry soap, organic chicken and toilet paper. I never really think about diamond rings.

Stupidity is the same as evil if you judge by the results.” – Margaret Atwood

Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, suspended a fraternity after a video appeared on social media that showed some of its members forcing a dog to drink beer at an off-campus party. They took a small dog, turned it upside down over a keg as another person brought the tap to the dog’s mouth and sprayed the beer. Hmmm. You already know what I think.

“The two most common elements in the universe are Hydrogen and stupidity.” – Harlan Ellison

What I Heard This Week! 05-30-2019

What I Heard This Week May 30, 2019

Hurricane Harvey changed things for many of us emotionally and financially. Our recent flooding brought back many memories and thoughts about what we can do ‘next time’ because there will always be a next time. In researching, I came across a water barrier product called Noaq Boxwall, which claims to redirect floodwaters. The website says, “This is the most effective barrier on the market at stopping floodwaters that are already present. It is our fastest and easiest barrier to deploy which can easily be stored in your garage or the back of a truck for future deployment. It requires no fill material, is extremely lightweight, and massively popular. This product is easy to deploy and recover by a single person. If you only have a matter of minutes to react to incoming floodwaters, this product allows you to respond even when it would be too late for almost every other barrier on the market.” The NOAQ Boxwall is lightweight, easy to manage and is quickly assembled by one person. You simply snap the units together like Lego pieces, using the weight of the water, so it doesn’t move. The units are about 20 inches high and 3-feet wide and cost $125 per unit. The cost of a full pallet, which could surround an average home, would run about $3,200. My brain has worked overtime on this – it makes so much sense. If all it does is slow the water down, it would allow for pumps to keep up.  After flooding, units are easily detached and can be cleaned using a garden hose, then neatly stacked for storage and reuse.I watched the video and recommend that you do too. It may help someone in your life. It may help YOU.

Dreams without deadlines are dead in the water. Deadlines are really lifelines to achieving our goals.”
 Mark Batterson

A 62-year-old man that eluded the FBI for 23 years, turned himself into the Oregon City Police Department. He was wanted for multiple incidents of sexual assault in ‘95-’96 involving 8& 10year-old girls that he babysat for.Wayne Silsbee now faces charges of first-degree sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a minor and first-degree unlawful sexual penetration. One comment I read stated, “perhaps he quit running because he will now receive free taxpayer funding healthcare, which he will need when the rest of the prisoners learn what he’s done.”Yep.

“I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.”Douglas Adams

A group of more than a dozen teens showed up at a home in Houston armed with paint pellet guns (and possibly more because shell casings were also found.) The homeowner/father went outside to investigate and said he felt threatened, so he opened fire on the group, shooting and killing a19-year-old. Paintball or real gun, it all looks the same in the dark. Police found paintball shells and splattered paint on the outside of the house. Police believe the man’s 17-year-old son may have been the group’s intended target, and say they wanted to ‘fight him’.What happened to just toilet-papering houses?

Carrie Fisher died in 2016 after suffering a heart attack on a flight from London to LA.Filmmaker J.J. Abrams is incorporating unused footage of Fisher that was leftover from The Force Awakens. He began by writing scenes around the old footage so Leia’s dialogue will fit into the movie in new ways. Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, will also appear in the movie playing Lt. Kaydel Ko Connix, a Resistance officer. The Rise of Skywalker will be released December 20.

A thief grabbed the tip jar at a Houston business and was later seen on their surveillance video. The owner of The BEP  Restaurant says that “she doesn’t want anything bad to happen to the man,” and that if he will just come in sometime in the next month and sincerely apologize to her staff and tell her why he did it, then she would consider helping him to get a job so he doesn’t have to steal tip jars. Hmmm. She has also glued the new tip jar to the counter.

Talked to a friend last night that saw her recently in concert and said, “she’s still got it.”Priscilla Presley is 74.

Bart Starr died at 85. He was an ordinary quarterback until Vince Lombardi teamed with the Green Bay Packers in 1959.The Packers selected Starr from University of Alabama as the 200th pick in the 1956 draft. Over the years he led Green Bay to six division titles, five NFL championships and wins in the first two Super Bowls. But the play he was most famous for was a run on Dec. 31, 1967. It was the NFL championship and the Packers had spent $80,000 for a heating coil system that would keep the field soft and warm. Forecasters said the approaching cold front wouldn’t arrive until after the game but when the grounds crew rolled up the tarpaulin, condensation had formed underneath; 40 mph winds made the field freeze like an ice rink. With a temperature of minus-14 and a wind-chill of minus-49, it was the coldest NFL game ever recorded. The wind-chill dipped another 20 degrees by the time the Packers got the ball trailing 17-14 with five minutes left. Starr slipped into the end zone with 16 seconds left and beat Dallas 21-17 in what became known as the Ice Bowl. His family said, “While he may always be best known for his success as the Packers quarterback…his true legacy will always be the respectful manner in which he treated every person he met, his humble demeanor and his generous spirit.

It’s scorching hot outside so don’t forget to change the direction of your ceiling fans. Summer is counterclockwise,in order to pull the cold air up and winter is clockwise to push down the rising hot air. Just doing my part to keep you comfortable and help lower the thermostat.

OK, girls. I hate to tell you, but J.J. Watt is engaged to his soccer playing girlfriend, Kealia Ohai. She is captain of the Houston Dash soccer team and is super cute. Arnold Schwarzenegger has even offered to officiate their wedding. Looks like it will be Houston’s version of the royal wedding.

Tiger Woods moved from No. 6 to No. 5 in the latest Official World Golf Ranking.

According to the new American Kennel Club data, the top-10 most popular dogs:1. Labs (28th year in a row.) 2. German Shepherds 3. Golden Retrievers, 4. French Bulldogs 5. Bulldogs 6. Beagles 7. Poodles 8. Rottweilers 9. German Short haired Pointers 10. Yorkshire Terriers. A quick poll of my friends would find the #1 labeled“Rescue.”The SPCA needs you to adopt, bring supplies or donate when you can.

Here is a list of some weird jobs that I bet you did not know existed. Professional Sleepers to test mattresses. Professional Mourners who will show up (if you can’t attend) to a funeral and stage a believable session of mourning, complete with breaking down and wailing, if necessary. Iceberg Movers for serious water scarcity. Food Stylists for photography and videography. Lego Master Builders to create huge Lego structures. Shark Tank Cleaner is self-explanatory.  And an Odor Judge determines the best smell for particular products like soaps, deodorants (phew) and candles. Don’t you feel a little smarter now that you know you have job options? Thank you all for taking the time to read this.

  • What I Heard This Week 10-26-2023

    by on October 25, 2023 - 0 Comments

His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS.
