What I Heard This Week February 9, 2022

A 58-year-old Clear Lake woman died after falling 35 ft. from one of the masts of the historic 1877 Tall Ship Elissa, docked at Pier 22 in Galveston. The woman was a volunteer and part-time employee on the ship, had passed tests to climb rigging, and was wearing a double-click safety harness when she fell, but was not properly attached on either point of contact to the ship.  The Galveston Historical Foundation manages the ship they purchased from a Greek scrap yard in the late 1970s. In 1982, staff and volunteers completed restoration and transformed the vessel into a floating museum, one of only three ships of her kind in the world to still have the capability to actively sail. More than 40,000 people visit the ship each year along with those who help maintain and keep her seaworthy.

A woman was taking a nap on Valentine’s Day afternoon. After she awoke, she told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a gorgeous and expensive diamond necklace for Valentine’s Day! What do you think it means?”  He replied, “You’ll know tonight.” That evening, her husband came home with a small package for her. Thrilled, she opened it and found a book titled, “The Meaning of Dreams.”

During a recent episode of “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” Shaquille O’Neal explained that gorillas at every zoo he’s been to act up and are intimidated, wanting to fight him. Every zoo. All over the world. Shaq loves zoos. In case you haven’t seen him in a while, I will remind you that he is 7’ 1” and 324 pounds. An expert said that the gorillas are afraid that Shaq is going to take away their girls, so they have to stand up, then act and look as big as possible.

What is a vampire’s sweetheart called? His ghoul-friend.

A slot machine malfunctioned in Las Vegas, not notifying the Arizona gambler or the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino personnel, that he had won nearly $230,000. They were able to identify the man by combing through hours of surveillance videos from several casinos, interviewing witnesses, electronic purchase records, and ride share data. Since the man was already home, he will return to Las Vegas to collect his winnings.

Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love, and got married. Their wedding ceremony wasn’t fancy. The reception, however, was excellent.

A woman picked up her sweet, fluffy, white, curly-haired dog from the groomer. As Lucky was handed to her, he just didn’t seem the same. Maybe it was because they had cut his hair a little shorter this time, but she also thought his overall demeaner was different. After she took him to the car, she gave him a better look. The dog in the car gave her the same look right back, never even responding to his own name. Was this her dog or an imposter? As she walked back into the groomer to get further information, she met another woman going in who saw the dog she was carrying and said, “Hi, Bentley.” Yep, she had the wrong dog. I told this story to Teller, and he was appalled. I assured him that it wouldn’t take me more than three seconds to know he had been switched with another dog. Especially this morning when he disrespected me as we were loading up the car for work, rolling around on the ground, smearing ‘something’ on to his collar, his bandana, and his body that smelled distinctly like dead or worse… mostly worse than dead. Then he tried to jump in my car. I didn’t know the full extent of the situation until I discovered something stinky on my hand and on the back doorknob going into the kitchen. I shudder to think about it right now. Today the two of us had to stay in my office so no one would send us home to bathe. Teller, the Wonder Dog.

What did one boat say to the other? “Are you up for a little row-mance?”

A Sacramento Fire crew forgot to clean their boots before responding to a recent medical call and left muddy boot prints all over a couple’s white carpet. To make up for what they had done, they took up a collection of their own money, $175, and gave it to the couple. Wanting to highlight the fire crew’s kindness, the couple has decided to pay it forward and donate all of the money to The Firefighter’s Burn Institute along with a substantial sum they are adding to it. There is good in the world.

It seems that Hertz has been falsely reporting a huge number of customers for car theft, with them being arrested and thrown in jail on felony charges. Not just a few, more than 180 customers are mad enough to sue for a total of $529.7 million. Some people stayed in jail for four months (while his credit card was still being charged for the rental) and it is all blamed on Hertz’s cost cutting measures. It’s easier and less expensive to report a car as stolen when it is misplaced or missing. Hmmm.

It’s no secret that advertisers pay big money for their Super Bowl commercials. $6.5 million for a 30-second spot. Scarlet Johansson and Colin Jost imagining that Amazon’s Alexa as a mind reader. Cute. Planet Fitness with Lindsay Lohan, William Shatner, Dennis Rodman, and Danny Trejo. Forest animals including a sloth, eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos & Doritos. The Clydesdale’s (thank you) for Budweiser. You’ll love it! It’s so sweet. Mila Kunis and Demi Moore as attendees at an awards ceremony for their shared high school, for AT&T. Cute. Zac Efron fishing for AT&T. Cute. Arnold Schwarzenegger for BMW electric cars. Cute. Idris Elba for Booking.com, asking for advice from The Most Interesting Man in the World (Dos Equis beer) and The Man Your Man Could Smell Like (Old Spice). Guy Fieri as Mayor of Flavortown for Bud Light Seltzer. Cute. Kia, with Robo Dog and a Bonnie Tyler song. You’ll have tears. Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd reminisce while eating Lay’s Potato Chips. Peyton Manning and Steve Buscemi for Michelob Ultra. Then Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Jerome Bettis, Terry Bradshaw and Victor Cruz for PepsiCo. Planter’s Peanuts. Sam’s Club with Kevin Hart. Enfamil, Nissan, Hellmann’s. Irish Spring, and so many more. Between 80 and 90 commercials. Yikes. That’s big bucks.

It must be because Mardi Gras Day is coming March 1st that my thoughts have turned to gumbo. Yes, gumbo has been on my mind a lot lately. I know I have crab, oysters, and shrimp in the freezer just waiting for me to bring home okra. Most individuals have a love or hate relationship with okra. Don’t laugh, but I guess I always thought that the gumbo file you buy in the spice department was ground up okra. Nope, it is a delicious herbal powder made from the dried and ground leaves of the North American sassafras tree and is also used as a thickener.  The history of file powder can be traced back to the Choctaw Indians in the Southern U.S., around the same time that the Cajuns arrived in Louisiana, bringing their own range of spices. I’m not a big fan of dark roux so I basically start with just a rich brown gravy and fish stock which I make up and freeze after I fillet fish. Sure would be a great game day meal.

Poor Andrew. First the lawsuit by Virginia Guiffre, then we heard about the fits he would throw when his collection of 60 teddy bears were not put back in the correct place when his room was cleaned. There was even a laminated picture of how they were supposed to be placed in the room, in order to help eliminate his meltdowns. They never mentioned how old he was at the time. If he was three, maybe it’s a little more understandable than if he was 18.

Speaking of Andrew… Valentine’s Day is here and just in time, Build-a-Bear released a line of adult-themed bears called the After Dark collection. This collection requires visitors to ensure that they are 18 years or older before accessing their website. Like that does a lot of good. Upon reading a little further, I realized this might be pretty cute. It doesn’t cross over the line of inappropriate, it was just my mind that was thinking inappropriately. Most of the bears are holding wine, dressed in nothing but boxers or wearing shirts that declare “I Want to Take You Out.” If you move your curser over a bear, the outfit disappears, revealing a regular teddy bear without clothing. There are worse things than a naked bear.

What do you call two birds in love? Tweethearts!

A veteran used numbers from a fortune cookie to play the lottery. Now he’s $4 million richer. Johnson & Johnson has halted the manufacturing of their Covid vaccine.  Snoop Dogg’s French Bulldog, Frank, was missing but was found. Prosecutors asked a judge to bar the parents of the accused Michigan school shooter from making romantic gestures toward each other in court, saying they’re making a “mockery of the crimes they’re accused of committing.” Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook) plunged 26% after 4th quarter earnings were announced and set the record for the biggest one-day drop in market history.  Mark Zuckerberg’s worth dropped by as much as $31 billion in one day. But it’s better…

Last week on Lake Texoma, a woman that had floated for two days on an air mattress was spotted by train engineers. She had found land, then made her way to the railroad tracks in 18-degree weather and snow. They stopped the train and radioed for help and emergency services, believing that the woman must be injured. The woman had been floating for two days, was freezing, cut up and bleeding. The woman, along with her boyfriend, had been trying to use the air mattress as a raft to get from the frozen shoreline to a boat. The man made it back to shore. Hmmm. This actually filled me with more questions than answers. Was alcohol involved at the moment they decided that an air mattress was capable of holding up the two of them as a raft in the middle of January? If the man made it to shore, why didn’t he report the accident and location, so she could be saved? Inquiring minds.

Are you wondering what to say to your sweetie for Valentine’s Day? I found this and thought it was pretty cute. Short. Sweet.
Will You Be My Valentine? By Karl Fuchs
For months I’ve sat and held it in,
It choked inside and hurt like sin.
It made me sweat and steam and stew,
Whenever I caught sight of you.
Thank goodness Valentine’s Day has come;
If I held it longer, it would strike me dumb.
This day I’ll say it, come rain or shine…
Will you be my Valentine?

Have a great weekend. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of your day. If you are having problems finding a paper, let us know. Thanks to all the people that have helped us for the past few weeks and been so patient while we work to get more locations. It is so appreciated.

What I Heard This Week! 07-29-2021

What I Heard This Week July 28, 2021

Today, I used the word lollygagging in a text to a friend. Then I started second-guessing myself, wondering if I had actually used the word properly. I continued to question how that word had even come to mind as I sent him the text. Lollygag: verb, spend time aimlessly; idle, or to dawdle. Yep, I had used it properly. Just one of those words from childhood that you pull from the far reaches of the very dated hard drives, that we carry, stuck between our shoulders. My grandmother would be proud.

I had my Olympic gold medal cut up into eleven pieces. Gave all eleven of my kids a piece. It’ll come together again when they put me down. Joe Frazier

The news feed said that there is one important toilet cleaning mistake we are probably making. Hmmm. I needed to know, especially since I clean five of them each week, three at the office, two at home. What could I be doing wrong? It is just a toilet. So, I Googled How to Properly Clean Toilets, studied it, and compiled my own list for Toilet Bowl Olympics. Hope you find it interesting. Maybe you can earn a GOLD, I did NOT.
1. Use gloves. Check. An easy 10.
2.
Do not rush. It takes time to insure all the nooks and crannies are clean. Hmmm. I could always do better, and sometimes I get a little cranky. I will give myself a 6-7.
3. Do not mix cleansers
. It can make the cleanser less effective, create adverse reactions, and harm your toilet bowl. Sometimes I dump some cleaner in at night, then come back the next day to actually clean. Then I might even add another cleaner like Lime-A-Way to clean the scale and hard water buildup. I shouldn’t do that, I guess. I give myself a 7.
4.
Clean your toilets every day or two. Hmmm. I lost points here. I will never clean more than once a week, but I do wipe-downs when needed.
5.
Disinfectant spray must sit on the surface for at least 10 minutes. Oops. See #2. No points.
6.
Clean your toilet brush with hydrogen peroxide after each use. Oh, my gosh. I have never done this, not one single time in my whole life. And I am probably not going to start now.
Dang. I just lost at my own game, but I never did look good in metallics.

A couple of weeks ago, there was a fishy story floating around that no tuna DNA could be found in tuna sandwiches at Subway. Subway responded with, “DNA testing is simply not a reliable way to identify denatured proteins, like Subway’s tuna, which was cooked before it was tested.” Now Subway has announced they are changing most of their menu – actually, the biggest menu change in Subway history. Everything will have some kind of change except for…drumroll please… the tuna sandwich. Subwaytunafacts.com.  Connie and I picked up sandwiches last week, and our Subway store is no longer carrying rotisserie chicken, my favorite. Some things are just too good to change.

If I bring back only one gold, people are going to say it’s a disappointment. But not too many of them own an Olympic gold medal, so if I get one, I’m going to be happy. Michael Phelps

There is a new strain of a succulent red marine algae called dulse that grows extraordinarily quickly, is packed full of protein, and tastes like bacon when it is cooked. Dulse grows in the wild along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines and is now sold at Whole Foods. I will let you know.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes and his soccer-star fiancée, are getting married. All of the groomsmen received a silver Rolex watch ($8000 and up), a flask, and a bottle of Fireball. The gifts came with a note saying to set your Rolex to island time. The bridesmaids were presented with Cartier Love bracelets ($8000 and up) and personalized robes.  I need to find me some new friends. 😊

Summer of Soul: New documentary. If you like music, you will love this. Just go ahead now and classify it as Must Watch. I promise. It was released this month in theaters and on Hulu (you can get a 30-day trial subscription). It’s the long-lost footage, filmed, but never seen, of 1969’s (same summer as Woodstock) Harlem Cultural Festival aka Black Woodstock. The 40-hours of footage sat in a basement, largely unseen, for five decades. It is now the winner of Sundance Film Festival 2021 Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, with some saying it is a strong contender for the best documentary of the year. I was dancing in the kitchen while Gage and I watched it. Great music. The Black Panthers provided security, Maxwell House Coffee sponsored, and General Foods commissioned Hal Tulchin to film the festival. Money was short so they faced the stage west to save on lighting. Gladys Knight & The Pips, Stevie Wonder, Sly & The Family Stone, B.B. King, the 5th Dimension, and more, entertained about 300,000 people. The documentary was directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson from late night TV and the Roots, in his directorial debut. Four stars out of four.

Vehicle prices are being driven up by more people wanting cars, but there is a limited supply due to a shortage of computer chips needed to build the cars. Rental car companies, a key provider of used cars, sold off much of their fleet last year to raise cash during the pandemic, and now they do not even have enough cars to rent. Some year-old cars are being sold for more than they did new, during the height of the pandemic. Sounds like the stories of people paying over asking price for houses. GM will either halt or reduce operations at three plants across North America because of the global semiconductor chip shortage. Honda, too. According to Intel, the shortage could last until the middle of 2023.

The Lake Jackson Historical Museum will accept your worn out, tattered, or faded American flags. They will be held in safekeeping until the Boy Scouts conduct another retirement ceremony. Drop off Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 979-297-1570. I had my own ceremony at the fire pit recently.

This is déjà vu. The stock market has had some less than perfect days lately, but we might be just a little spoiled. Truth is… investors are scared of the Delta variant and what it may mean for global economy. Rightfully so. It has been stated that most Americans who have not previously been infected or received vaccinations, will likely contract the Delta variant, the most transmissible Covid-19 strain yet. In other words, it sounds like you have two choices now, get the vaccine or get Covid. This week’s headline said, “Four months ago they were celebrating. Now doctors are once again preparing for the worst.  Inside the state’s biggest hospitals, doctors say a surge of unvaccinated COVID patients is almost too bewildering to believe.”  My personal feelings are, if you cannot find a way to do it for yourself, now we need to do it for the kids 12 and under that do not have access to the vaccine yet. You do NOT want to infect a child. Your child. Your grandchild. Any child.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…”  Peter Benchley, Jaws

This is Groundhog Day: Yes, 57% of Texans are still unvaccinated, and 99.5 % of those who have died of COVID in Texas since February, were unvaccinatedOn May 16, our state recorded its first day without a COVID death in more than a year. Here we are two months later, and Texas’s seven-day average for new cases was just over 4,500 – 177 % increase over the past two weeks – and recording 25 deaths per day.

This is a Flashback: Public health officials in Austin have raised the city’s COVID threat level, advising even vaccinated residents to now wear masks. Hospitalizations doubled in July in Williamson County, which is home to Georgetown and Round Rock, and in Dallas County, while quadrupling in Tarrant County, whose seat is Fort Worth. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo this week upgraded the county’s threat level as public health officials began to issue stark warnings about the possibility of hospitals becoming overwhelmed by COVID patients. Please take this seriously.

Roundup: Studies have found that Roundup can alter the normal bacterial content of soil, as well as organisms such as earthworms, monarch butterflies, and honeybees. Even where Roundup is fully allowed, it is recommended that contingency plans be formulated, beginning now. Even without limitations, the growing resistance of weeds to glyphosate, will likely result in the need for alternative methods of weed control in the near future. verywell health

For athletes, the Olympics are the ultimate test of their worth.  Mary Lou Retton

An enormous 1,174-carat diamond has been unearthed in Botswana. It is unofficially the world’s third-largest diamond, and so pretty. It fits in the palm of a man’s hand. I wonder if they cut up diamonds that are huge or leave it as is. President Biden says that the federal government is considering making vaccines mandatory for all federal employees. The Department of Veterans Affairs, which runs hospitals and clinics around the country, announced that it would mandate coronavirus vaccines for more than 100,000 frontline healthcare workers, making it the first federal agency to do so. Snoring, “unless all bedroom windows are closed and securely locked,” is prohibited in this state of Massachusetts, by an old law still technically on the books. Tokyo set a daily record for Covid cases just days after the Olympics opening. Bruce Springsteen’s 29-year-old daughter, Jessica, is competing in the 2020 Olympics as a member of the US Equestrian Team. Jessica is ranked 27 in the world in show jumping.

Arguing is the Olympics of talkingStewart Stafford

For those of you that care, World Emoji Day just occurred.  The laugh out loud face is officially the world’s most popular emoji, the thumbs up emoji came in second, followed by the red heart emoji. The flirtatious wink and kiss and sad face with a tear emojis respectively rounded out the top five.

I wouldn’t say that there’s ever been an Olympic champion that didn’t deserve to win an Olympic Gold Medal. Dorothy Hamill

Johnson & Johnson is voluntarily recalling five of their sunscreens after internal testing identified low levels of benzene in some samples of the products. An independent lab tested 294 samples from 69 brands of sprays, lotions, gels, and creams designed to protect the skin from the sun or care for the skin after sun. Of those, 78 samples tested positive for benzene. Benzene is a carcinogen, a widely used industrial chemical found in crude oil, and is a major part of gasoline. It is used to make plastics, resins, synthetic fibers, rubber lubricants, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides, but it is important to note that it is NOT an ingredient in sunscreen and never has been. These benzene levels are likely due to contamination. I could not find out what kind of contamination. Benzene is also found in nail polishes, nail polish removers, nail hardeners, and fingernail glue. Manicure, anyone?

The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, died at age 73 on Christmas Day 2006. His family just settled their 15-year battle over his estate. There was a former partner claiming to be his wife, more than a dozen lawsuits by people trying to lay claim to his assets, even a fight over what to do with his body, which remained inside his gold casket in cold storage in a funeral home, for several months, before eventually being buried in South Carolina, at a daughter’s home. Justices ordered a circuit court to “promptly proceed with probate of Brown’s estate in accordance with his estate plan,” which outlined creation of a trust that would use his music royalties to fund educational expenses for children in South Carolina and Georgia.

Thanks for taking the time to read us. We do SO appreciate you. Be sure to place an ad, sell something, buy something, so we can all add to our economy. I found the following, decided not to use it, then changed my mind. The virus will not go away because you want it to or because you are tired of it. Get the vaccine, wear a mask, have a clue, give a damn.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
