What is wrong with people? We seem to live in a world of total rudeness now. Recently, an American Airlines flight from Phoenix to Austin was forced to return to the gate due to unexpected flatulence… yes, you heard me right. The extremely bad-mannered passenger was removed. But not before he made an abundance of new friends that wished him well when he departed. In addition to being gassy, the fart-man also had very foul manners, vulgar mouth and was a braggard… very proud of his abilities. While we are on this subject…in 2006, another American Airlines flight from Washington to Dallas was forced to land in Nashville after a passenger lit a match in the bathroom but would not admit she had done so. The passengers and crew were taken off the plane, luggage was searched, and the plane was examined for a fire. After a lengthy questioning by FBI, and a bomb sniffing dog finding her spent matches, the woman admitted to her mistake explaining she had a medical condition, but she was still not allowed back on the plane… and not charged since there was no malice involved. That was 17 years ago… today we have quite a bit more hostility and bitterness in the world. How did it happen?

On Dateline, it’s always the person who “lit up the room” that gets murdered. I’m glad I’m grouchy and unapproachable.
Chinese New Year is February 10th, Year of the Dragon. According to 1-800-Flowers, the 2024 Flower of the Year is the delicate and gorgeous peony. Forever chemicals that fall outside federal testing guidance are now in our drinking water and in all of our bodies. Lionel Richie and Earth Wind & Fire announced the next leg of their Sing a Song All Night Long tour will extend May to June (I bet that will be a good concert). The Rolling Stones Tour ’24 will be in Houston April 28. (I know that will be good.) A recent study is telling us that the moon’s core is getting colder, causing the moon, our closest neighbor in space, to shrink… as much as 150 feet in diameter. The LEGO Brick Fest Live in Houston Feb 3&4 at NRG Center. Over a million bricks on display, life-size models, hands-on, and hard-to-find LEGO merchandise. Amelia Earhart’s missing Lockheed 10-E Electra plane may have been located. Missing since 1937, the reason they believe this is the real thing is because of the shape of the plane. Many have tried to solve this mystery over the past… 80-something years.

The Julien’s Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion auction had an incredible day. A black velvet off-the-shoulder cocktail dress designed by Catherine Walker for Princess Diana sold for $325,000, three times its original estimate of $100,000. A couture Givenchy green wool suit worn by Princess Grace Kelly to meet Jackie Kennedy at the White House in 1961, sold for the same amount, $325,000. Audrey Hepburn’s white cotton Yves Saint Laurent dress that she wore to her son’s christening in 1970, sold for $13,000. Whitney Houston’s 2008 Burberry London cotton trench coat, sold for $4,550. Lynn Marta of Footloose and Young & the Restless died at 78. David Gail, Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, died at age 58 of sudden cardiac arrest. Bill Hayes, who originated the 1970 role of con artist and lounge singer Doug Williams on the soap opera, Days of Our Lives, died at 98. He met his wife of almost 50 years, Susan Seaforth Hayes, on the show, they married in 1974, then two years later their characters married. He said, “In 1974 Susan and I got married in my living room with 16 people. In 1976… we had 16 million.” A good back story… in 1955, Hayes scored a No. 1 hit with The Ballad of Davy Crockett. I guess I had always thought Fess Parker was the only one singing, Davy. Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. I even had a coonskin cap. The song has many different versions (French by Annie Cordy, Fess Parker, The Wellingtons, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Mac Wiseman, Sons of the Pioneers, Louis Armstrong, Max Bygraves, Hayes, and more) as Walt Disney launched a massive marketing campaign to make the country’s youth “Crockett conscious.” It is considered one of the Top 100 Western Songs of all time. Professionally known Chita Rivera, aka Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero Anderson, actress, singer, dancer, and legend of Broadway, died at 91. There are too many accomplishments to list them all here, but West Side Story is the role that made her a Broadway star. A few years back, my son and I saw Rivera and Tommy Tune at the Grand Opera House in Galveston. Great performers. They stayed at the stage door and signed autographs. Joyce Randolph, the actress who played Trixie Norton on The Honeymooners, died at 99.
A couple’s wedding was interrupted by the loud sounds of a cat coming from the woods behind them. The loud cat was drowning out the groom’s voice while reciting his vows. People were starting to laugh as the cat sat on a tree stump demanding to be heard. Luckily, this bride and groom were cat people. They even had cat toppers on their cake. It got quiet and the ceremony continued. Several weeks later, the venue called the couple to let them know they had caught the cat by feeding her shrimp. The staff had then taken the cat to an animal shelter where she was given medical attention. Daisy is now living ‘the life’ with the bride and groom. Their wedding video caption says, “Loud mouths get food. Loud mouths that interrupt weddings get new homes.” Isn’t that sweet.
Local Lions Club International is looking for the old Lions Club gumball machines that were used years ago as fundraisers. They want to try it again. Great idea. Contact Billy Gray Jr. at 979-415-4426 or billy_gray_jr@att.net
For Christmas I ordered a Texas Pecan Pie from Goode Company to be sent to a family in New Hampshire. A little pricy but packed so pretty in a wooden box that says Made in Texas. Then last week, I came across the copycat recipe for the pie. Here it is. I have not made it yet. The word PECAN comes from an Algonquian (original Indigenous people of southern Quebec and eastern Ontario in Canada) word meaning a nut requiring a stone to crack. Question: Is it puh-kahn or pee-can?
Goode Company Pecan Pie
3 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup White Karo
3 TBSP melted butter
1 tsp white vinegar
1 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp salt
1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions: Mix all ingredients together except the pecans. Mix in pecans. Pour mixture into unbaked pie shell. Preheat oven to 375 then bake for 25-30 minutes, testing for doneness with a knife inserted in the center that comes out clean. (I would use a really good crust…)
Remember groundhogs are the weathermen of Mother Nature, and Punxsutawney Phil is the king of winter forecasting, without a shadow of a doubt. Happy Groundhog Day!
I’ll leave you with the thought that is lingering in everyone’s mind this week: Can Taylor Swift actually make it to the Super Bowl in time… LISA
