What I Heard This Week 03-23-2023

What I Heard This Week March 22, 2023

Last week, I was asked how do you decide what to write about? Well. Stuff in the news. It could be a magazine or book that I read, or something I cooked or ate. Perhaps it was something I found funny. You will find that I don’t often take a real position on an issue unless it involves stupidity, food, or our wonderful Earth (see stupidity “a man sues Buffalo Wild Wings – end of column). Some weeks it’s hard to find something that I think will hold your interest because it doesn’t even hold my interest. At times I can spend an hour writing a paragraph (you must fact-check most information you read with at least two other sources because some news sources are less than truthful), then I’ve been known to turn around and delete the whole thing. Hope you enjoy what I found this week. Especially about Mr. & Mrs. Pickles.

This is the best story. At the Houston Zoo, Mr. Pickles, 90-years-old and the most genetically valuable radiated tortoise in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, just became a father to three baby tortoises. Mr. Pickles is the oldest animal at the Houston Zoo. He and his longtime partner, Mrs. Pickles, are new parents to Dill, Gherkin and Jalapeno, all doing well and quite beautiful little tortoises. Mr. Pickles has been at the zoo for 36 years and has been with Mrs. Pickles since she arrived in 1996. The Pickles had another little Pickle in 1997. Zoo officials say the hatchlings were definitely a surprise. Luckily, someone saw Mrs. Pickles as she was laying her eggs at closing time and since the soil in Houston isn’t like it is in Madagascar, it’s unlikely the eggs would have hatched on their own. That’s definitely being at the right place at the right time. They’re so cute, too. It is a species with recorded lifespans of up to 188 years, so Mr. Pickles may just now be hitting his prime. These tortoises are classified as critically endangered because of the destruction of their habitat and because of poaching.

There was a young belle of old Natchez
Whose garments were always in patchez.
When comments arose
On the state of her clothes,
She replied, ‘When Ah itchez, Ah scratchez. – Ogden Nash

Actor Ryan Reynolds group sold Mint Mobile to T-Mobile for $1.35 BILLION. That means his roughly 25% of Mint Mobile will have him rolling in more than $300 million in cash and stock from the transaction. The Houston Astros are without star second baseman Jose Altuve for a while after he fractured his right thumb in a game which will require surgery. Yosemite has reopened from sunrise to sunset with limited access after their historic snowfall, up to 15 feet in some areas, 40” in just one day.

My pet mouse “Elvis” died last night. He was caught in a trap. (Thanks to Emily for that laugh.)

Investigation into the 2015 hit-and-run accident of Buster Murdaugh’s classmate and friend, Stephen Smith, is being reopened based on new evidence. The Smith family began raising money for an independent exhumation and autopsy to get an unbiased look at his body and an accurate determination of his cause of death. As of Monday, the family had raised $67,265 (as of the day I wrote this) of a $15,000 goal. I would say people are supporting new evidence. What about the housekeeper?

Items belonging to the once prominent SC Murdaugh family, are set to be auctioned this week by Liberty Auction House. No online or absentee bids. The 1,700-acre hunting estate is under contract, listed in February for $3.9 million. It includes a 5,275-sq-ft home, guest cottage, equipment shed, fishpond, kennels and shooting range.

Murdaugh is now living in a single cell, separated from other prison inmates due to concerns that he might be a target for other inmates, given his legal presence in the state. Never thought about that…

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Musician Elton John is 76. Sex symbol Ursula Andress of Dr. No, & Casino Royale is 87. Remember Honey Ryder emerging from the sea in that white bikini? Actor and stuntman Paul Grant, 56, died this past week. He was best known as an Ewok in Return of the Jedi, and a goblin in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Actor and musician Lance Solomon Reddick, died at 60. He was Charon in the John Wick franchise. Hall of Famer & New York Knicks legend, Willis Reed died at 80.

A police recruit was asked during the exam, “What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?” He said, “Call for backup.” (This could be a big problem in our world right now, no one is afraid of their mother.)

Rupert Murdoch, 92-years old (Fox News and many more news companies) is getting married again, just seven months after divorcing supermodel Jerry Hall (after he broke up with her by email.) The 5th time may be a charm. The new bride is Ann Lesley Smith, a 66-year-old former model, singer-songwriter, radio talk-show host and police chaplain. The couple said, they are “looking forward to spending the second half of our lives together”. Hmmm. I wonder if they are aware that the average life expectancy dropped to 76.1 years for males. Living on love. Murdoch’s Fox Corp. is currently facing a 1.6 billion lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems, alleging Fox News hosts and guests defamed it by falsely tying it to efforts to cheat Trump out of an election victory in 2020. Murdoch acknowledged in a deposition that he had the power to stop the false narrative but declined to step in.

Taylor Swift’s new Era Tour has her belting out 44 songs from all of her albums, about a dozen costume changes, all in a span of three hours and 15 minutes. No intermission. Seriously impressive. Police arrested a 32-year-old man who pleaded guilty to an attempt to seize 200,000 Cadbury Crème Eggs loaded in a semi-truck in central England. A woman had never taken her 2007 iPhone out of the box, and it just recently auctioned/sold for $63,000.

Remember me telling you about the invasive snails in Florida that were first spotted in 2004? The Everglade Kite (it gets its name because it seems to float in the air) is similar to a hawk that eats just one thing…snails. Over the last century, as much of the Everglades was drained, the population of this bird declined and was one of the first birds put on the endangered species list in the 60’s but has bounced back recently because of this invasive species. Bonner General Health, the only hospital in Sandpoint, Idaho, announced on Friday that it would no longer provide labor, delivery, and a host of other obstetrical services due to the political climate in Idaho.

Based on new facts (actually, recently disclosed facts… swabs taken from market stalls in and around the pandemic’s ground zero in January 2020), show a cute, dog-like animal called a racoon-dog (looks like a cross between a fox and a racoon) has emerged as possibly the culprit for the first transmission of the COVID virus to humans, since they have long been known to naturally carry coronaviruses. Evidence emerged in 2020 revealing the animals were illegally kept at the marketplace.

Eric Kilburn Jr. is 14 years old, 6’10”, a high school freshman JV football player with a size 23 shoe, but for the past year he has been wearing his “too small” size 22 shoes because no one could find him a shoe in a 23. Now, Under Armour and PUMA both have representatives flying to Michigan to fit Eric for new custom shoes, preparing to scan the biggest pair of feet the company has ever made shoes for. Sounds like Cinderella to me.

Through MacKenzie Scott’s organization Yield Giving, she plans to select and make donations of $1 million each to 250 different nonprofits, which she calls a “new pathway to support for organizations making positive change in their communities.” To apply, the nonprofits must have annual operating budgets larger than $1 million, but less than $5 million for at least two of the past five years. “Teams on the front lines of challenges have insights no one else can offer,” Scott said, “So there are three big headlines here in my heart: Community changemakers can nominate themselves. Community changemakers get feedback from their peers. Community changemakers have a powerful role in funding decisions.”  Lever for Change will manage the process to find community-focused organizations; registration by May 5, and applications completed by June 12. What are you waiting for?

There is a great big giant blob of sargassum seaweed measuring 5,000 miles long, with some headed for the Florida coast. It can be seen from space, from tropical Atlantic, from West Africa to the Caribbean, and they believe it could weigh more than 11 million tons. It can be good for the fish to hide while traveling in the ocean, but when it washes up on beaches the turtles can’t escape it, then it starts to rot and it is one bad stinky mess. Google 2023 Sargassum Seaweed Map if you want to see where it’s going.

The Supreme Court finally has something worthy of their abilities. Jack Daniel’s, the famous Tennessee whiskey company is not amused and is trying to stop the production of a chewy dog toy called Bad Spaniels, a toy that looks just like a Jack Daniel’s bottle with the alcohol content changed from 40% by volume to 43% poo by volume, 100% smelly. It’s called Silly Squeakers and is now the company’s best-selling product. Jack Daniel’s doesn’t want their customers associating a fine whiskey with dog poop.

Don’t forget that PetSupermarket provides a 10% discount on regular and sale priced merchandise the last Tuesday of the month, for military or seniors over the age of 55. Ten percent is huge. I set an alarm each week to remind me when to head that way for Teller’s food and salmon chewies. Last Tuesday!

A man is suing Buffalo Wild Wings claiming that their boneless wings are not wings at all, but more like a chicken nugget. Buffalo Wild Wings tweeted in response: “It’s true. Our boneless wings are all white meat chicken. Our hamburgers contain no ham. Our buffalo wings are 0% buffalo.” The same man has filed at least three other class-action lawsuits; claiming that the “natural” label on Tom’s Wicked Fresh Mouthwash and the “high in fiber” label on Kind granola are inaccurate and that Hefty (case dismissed) shouldn’t label its bags as “recycling bags” because they are not recyclable.

Why did the frog take the bus to work today? His car got toad away. Coming soon, so start collecting your box of shredding. April 15 – Shred Day with Texas Gulf Bank – L J Rec Center Parking Lot.

What I Heard This Week 03-31-2022

What I Heard This Week March 30, 2022

Billionaire philanthropist, MacKenzie Scott, has donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity, a global organization that partners with communities to build or improve housing. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $2.7 billion last year (2021) to 286 groups supporting a variety of causes. In July 2020, she donated more than $1.7 billion to diverse organizations including historically Black colleges and universities. Brazosport College received one of her gifts. Later in 2020, Scott announced she donated an additional $4.2 billion to 384 organizations including food banks, emergency relief funds, and debt relief. What a woman.

“Good Food. Good Life.” Russia is being punished by taking away their chocolate. Facing growing pressure from critics to exit Russia, Swiss food company Nestle is suspending sales of Kit Kat bars, Nespresso pods, and San Pellegrino bottled water in Russia, but will continue to sell essential items like infant food and medical nutrition. Yogurt maker Danone and Pepsi said that they will suspend some business but will continue to sell essential products like milk and baby formula in Russia. Food companies are having a tough time as they weigh access to food as a basic human right, but respond to pressure from critics who say pulling out completely is necessary for sanctions against the Russian economy to succeed. It could have a real impact on how their brands are now perceived, and their bottom lines. Staying in that country and paying taxes to the budget of a terrorist country is perceived as killing defenseless children & mothers in other countries. Hmmm. It is up to us.

Humans are so reliant on technology now. Laptops, computers, smart phones. Some of us… hmmm, I wonder who they’re talking about… have not developed particularly good back-up habits to ensure that information and personal data, pictures, and videos, are secure and safe. When my son was young, I lost years of pictures when I handed him one of my old phones, and he immediately wiped it clean. Could you call any of your family if your phone died? In 1998, before the release of Toy Story 2, someone entered a command on the drives where Pixar stores the film’s files, deleting 90% of the film. Broken hard drives, hacked computers, erratic phones, we have all had it happen at least once. March 31st is National World Backup Day. In 1956, an IBM engineer came up with the idea of the external hard drive and in the 1960’s a computer scientist is believed to have invented cloud storage.

Most all of our personal information is already out there on the web, so our job is to prevent criminals from using it for their own benefit. And they will, it is just a matter of time. One step you can take is to change your passwords often. Set aside a couple of hours at least once a year, to change all your passwords on your accounts… do it more often for critical accounts like banks or health care providers. Yes, then do it again in 6 months. If you have accounts like retailers and restaurants that make you set up an account in order to purchase from them, and they now email you constantly, then close them out. Remember to upgrade the quality of your password, and never, never, never use the same password twice. One article said that if the world stopped reusing passwords for multiple sites, we would cut cybercrime in half overnight. Don’t just change one letter or number. That makes it way too easy for the bad guys. The longer and more random the password, the more power is required to hack it. If you use passphrases, use words that don’t seem to make sense together. The example they used was RedEnginesEatPurpleDust%!*. Get you a password journal – I use an address book – then print the name of the account, the login, the password, and the date you created it. Do it for every account, then put your journal in a safe place. Or you can get an online password manager. They store the information in the cloud so all you have to do is change the master password about every 6 months. There is more. Just remember that there are so many evils out there right now.

Madeleine Albright, American politician and diplomat who served as the 64th United States Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton, died of cancer at the age of 85. She was the first female secretary of state in U.S. history. Taylor Hawkins, drummer for Foo Fighters died at 50. According to a forensic report, his heart weighed double the average for a man his age. They think that this may have played a part in his death, along with a cocktail of 10 drugs found in his system.

On Google Earth, someone spotted a mountain of stolen bikes in a man’s backyard. I saw the picture and bikes were stacked high and covered the entire backyard property. Hundreds of bikes. The neighbors said the bikes had been there for years. Did the neighbors not scratch their heads and wonder why?

It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis,” Phil Collins told the concert crowd. “After tonight we all have to get real jobs.” The Genesis drummer has suffered from poor health since 2007 when he dislocated the vertebra in his upper neck during a concert. The 71-year-old began using a cane to walk in 2017 and performed all of the tour’s gigs seated in a chair.

Former President Donald Trump released an official statement announcing that he had a hole-in-one at his golf course. He said, “It took place at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on the 7th hole, which was playing 181-yards into a slight wind. I hit a 5-iron, which sailed magnificently into a rather strong wind, with approximately 5 feet of cut, whereupon it bounced twice and then went clank, into the hole.” “I won’t tell you who won because I am a very modest individual, and you will then say I was bragging – and I don’t like people who brag!” I bet Saturday Night Live has already written a skit about it for this weekend.

The safety harness and seat of the 14-year-old boy who fell to his death from an amusement park ride in Florida last week, were still locked at the end of the ride that is described as the world’s tallest free-standing drop tower, where 30 riders rise to the top, tilt forward and plunge nearly 400 feet at speeds reaching over 75 mph. There is speculation that the teen may have been too heavy for the ride. He was only 14 years old but already 6 feet, 5 inches tall, 340 pounds, with aspirations to make it to the NFL, but had been turned away from other rides because of his size. Dollywood has temporarily closed their drop tower ride that was made by the same manufacturer.

This is a story that needs to be shared. All Chick-fil-A locations throughout the US and Canada are partnering with DAR PRO Solutions, a Texas-based manufacturing company that will convert all the fast-food restaurant’s used cooking oil into cleaner burning renewable transportation fuel. More than 700 million gallons of renewable diesel are expected to be produced in 2022 as a result of the companies’ joint venture.

The University of Houston announced that it has created the Energy Transition Institute after receiving a $10 million gift from oil giant Shell. The institute will focus on production and use of reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy for all and will focus on three core areas: hydrogen, carbon management and circular plastics. The iconic koalas are now listed as endangered in several states and territories in Australia. Climate change and habitat loss had led to dramatic declines in their population. This comes after the black summer fires of 2019 and 2021, which some estimate may have left as many as 60,000 koalas dead or injured. A sad day for their nation.

Shanghai is beginning China’s largest and most extensive Covid lockdown in two years, to conduct mass testing and to control a growing outbreak. Blue Origin is set for their 4th crewed sub-orbital space flight on Thursday, two days later than planned because of expected high winds. One of Blue Origin’s first employees and architect of the New Shepard program, was added to the crew, replacing comedian Pete Davidson. Blue Origin and its customers do not discuss the cost of a New Shepard seat, but prices are thought to be in the half-million-dollar range or more. An Indiana man was arrested after murdering his wife by striking her in the face with a gallon-sized cement flowerpot after having fought about divorce because he was having an affair. The woman had just finished chemotherapy for breast cancer just days before the murder. Two teenage girls in New England were fortunate because their mothers loved them enough to turn them in to police after they assaulted, by kicking and punching, homeless people on the streets. The two girls are 14 and 16, as well as a 15-year-old boy who filmed the incident while egging on the attack. There are other videos circulating that appear to be the same situation.

Last night while I was making ramen soup, I watched the movie, Rescued by Ruby on Netflix, a real-life true story about an Australian shepherd/border collie mix rescue dog with behavioral problems (clever but naughty), trained by a state trooper who dreams of joining the K-9 Search & Rescue team. It was so good… and sweet. It is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and nothing gets 100%.

Will Smith and Chris Rock. Sigh. It is always a bad sign when you have to announce at the Academy Awards or family reunions that we do not condone violence. What we really want to see in our society, are good, positive role models from our athletics, politicians, actors, parents, school officials… you know what I’m saying. I always told my children that some individuals are put on this Earth and in their lives, not as a good example, but as a healthy guide or blueprint of what NOT to do. This gets to be a harder sell as human behavior seems to get more hostile and frightening.

On Sunday, I had the opportunity (thanks to Bonnie & David Novosad) to take my daughter to see Come From Away at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston. The story is so incredibly good. On September 11th, 2001, 7000 people are stranded in the tiny, charming town of Gander, Newfoundland after all flights into the US are grounded. While stranded, the people of Gander house, feed and entertain the “come from aways” as they find love, loss, and hope in the aftermath of terror. I have to say that it is one of the BEST musicals I have ever seen. I cried and I laughed. I bet there are still tickets left for this weekend. You have to mask which is fortunate because it helps catch the water from your eyes.

On the way to the office this morning, the bumper sticker on the car in front of me said, “I brake for Frogs.” The light took a long time to change but gave me time to think. I pivoted from thinking how silly it was to wondering about what kind of world would it be if everyone braked for frogs! I decided that it is definitely a world I want to live in.

What I Heard This Week! 06-17-2021

What I Heard This Week June 17, 2021

MacKenzie Scott, bless her heart, is troubled by increasing concentration of wealth, so she has given away another $2.7 billion of her fortune to 286 non-profits. In her divorce from Jeff Bezos, Scott received a 4% stake in Amazon. Shares of the stock rose during the pandemic, so despite giving away billions since, her wealth continues to grow. What a lovely problem. Her net worth estimated at $36.1 billion in October 2019, has increased by some $23 billion since then. The really great part of this story is that she just gave $3 million to Brazosport College, one of the largest donations in the college’s history. Yeah, to a woman that will leave a legacy like no other…education for all.

“The only Father’s Day tradition in my family is the annual conversation he and I have where I say, ‘Hey, Dad, what do you want for Father’s Day this year?’ and he says, ‘Nothing.’ Then I ask my mom what I should get him, and she says, ‘He likes sandalwood soap, dangly jewelry and Chanel No. 5 perfume.’”
Michael Showalter

Harvey Weinstein is serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual sex act convictions in NY State, in a medical unit dealing with his cardiac, back, eyesight, and dental problems. His latest request to delay extradition to California was denied this week. Weinstein’s lawyers feel that he needs to stay where he is for treatments. “They don’t get to pick when and where they get the treatment,” the assistant District attorney argued. “It’s Los Angeles. It’s not some remote outpost that doesn’t have any sort of medical care.” In California, Weinstein is facing 11 counts of sexual assault. Some people create their own storms and then get mad when it rains.

“We wondered why when a child laughed, he belonged to Daddy, and when he had a sagging diaper that smelled like a landfill, ‘He wants his mother.’” Erma Bombeck

This was taken from a Newsweek feed (because I could not figure out how to repeat it).People have tried to auction their souls on eBay. The e-commerce website promptly shut down those attempts because the sellers can’t deliver what they are promising. eBay also explained another reason why it forbids soul selling, stating “if the soul does exist then, in accordance with eBay’s policy on human parts and remains, we would not allow the auctioning of human souls.” Huh. This sounds way too much like National Inquirer.

Which leads me to this. An Italian visual artist recently sold an invisible sculpture for over $18,000. In other words, an artist sold something that does not exist, for real money. What? Do auction houses actually allow people to sell something that does not exist. Hey, it says it even comes with a certificate of authenticity. Am I just not keeping up or is our society getting a little weird?

Attn: Texans: The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a conservation alert citing “tight grid conditions” amid potential record electricity demand. ERCOT operates separately in Texas from the rest of the country. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas is asking residents to reduce their electric use as  temperatures rise, only four months after Texas plunged into a freezing blackout that left millions without power. With a fireplace and gas stove, I can live through a freeze. I cannot do, no AC.

I’ve been to war. I’ve raised twins. If I had a choice, I’d rather go to war. George W. Bush

FOOD: After 60 years on the McDonald’s menus, non-carbonated Hi-C Orange Lava Burst went away. Fans petitioned, and now it’s back! Sonic has new Cheesecake Blasts. It says, Real cheesecake. Real ice cream. Real delicious. Creamy cheesecake swirled with real ice cream & buttery graham cracker pieces, topped with real cheesecake plus more graham cracker pieces. Only 940 calories. Hmmm. And it comes in strawberry, too. Starbucks now has Honey Almondmilk Cold Brew, a cold non-dairy coffee.

Ned Beatty died at 83. In 1972, he made his film debut in Deliverance, starring Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds.Network, Superman; the list of great movies is long.  He also voiced the villainous tortoise mayor in Rango, and Lotso the Huggin’ strawberry-scented teddy bear who ruled Sunnyside Daycare like a prison in Toy Story 3.

To mark the 40th anniversary of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Steven Spielberg’s 1981 masterpiece is being re-released July 9, 2021, for a one-week special engagement in theaters across the country. It will have to keep you satisfied until July 29, 2022, when “Indiana Jones 5” starring Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Mads Mikkelsen, is released.

Dr. Bronner’s, a popular natural soap brand that I love, especially the peppermint and eucalyptus, is sharing Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate and will sell online by fall. It is dairy-free chocolate and will come in six different flavors: roasted whole hazelnuts, crunchy hazelnut butter, salted whole almonds, salted almond butter, salted dark chocolate and smooth coconut praline. The bars are made from cocoa grown through regenerative organic practices, and are made with lower-glycemic coconut sugar. Organic, vegan, and certified Fairtrade product. (And did I mention it is chocolate.)

Just in time for July 4th, a second bronze statue of the Statue of Liberty is leaving France for the US, more than a century after the larger version made the same journey.  “The statue symbolizes freedom and the light around all the world,” said the administrator of the National Museum of Arts and Crafts in central Paris, where it has been installed since 2011 in the museum’s garden. “We want to send a very simple message: Our friendship with the United States is very important, particularly at this moment. We have to conserve and defend our friendship.” The statue, 992 pounds, and just shy of 10 feet tall, was first made in 2009, an exact replica of the original 1878 plaster model preserved by CNAM. Destination is Washington, DC, where it will be displayed for 10 years at the French ambassador’s residence. Merci.

The Senate unanimously passed a bill to make Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the US, a public holiday. Kelly Clarkson is set to take over Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime slot.Covid-19U.S.death toll is approaching 600,000. Wow. A Texas family welcomed their third child with the same birthday. A Goliath grouper, a species at one point near extinction, was caught in South Carolina. The homemade sign said “My cat is a thief. Please take these items if they are yours.” Next to the sign is a small clothesline with 12 gloves and a face mask. I bet that cat was so proud. A very muscular, and tattooed man was tired of seeing the wedding dress of his ex-fiancée hanging in his closet, so he decided to sell it. A buyer wanted to see what it looked like on, so the guy with muscles and a ton of tattoos wore it himself, sharing the snaps in a Tik Tok video. She did not buy the dress.

My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, “You’re tearing up the grass.” “We’re not raising grass,” Dad would reply. “We’re raising boys.” Harmon Killebrew

A North Dakota man skipped his niece’s wedding for a Las Vegas poker tournament, coming home with $367,800 in winnings. “I just had a really strong feeling about this tournament,” he said. “I had to go. I don’t really know what it was, but I thought I could take it down, or get real close to it. I can get (Macie) a better wedding present now.” Miller has been playing poker for about 15 years and has won more than $500,000.

You can tell what the best year of your dad’s life was because they (dads) seem to freeze that clothing style and ride it out. Jerry Seinfeld

You have heard the story…Jeff Bezos, one of the world’s richest people, is going to travel into space. His brother, Mark, will join him on a Blue Origin flight, the rocket company that he owns. They will launch 62 miles above the Earth’s surface aboard the company’s first human flight on July 20th, just 15 days after Bezos steps down as Amazon’s CEO, a role he has served in for 27 years.  A mystery person paid $28 million at an auction that attracted interest from more than 140 countries, just to travel with them. They will have to endure up to 5.5 gigs of force during the ascent but will return to Earth in just 11 minutes. But that is old news. A man named Jose Ortiz set up a petition on Change.org titled “Petition to Not Allow Jeff Bezos Re-Entry to Earth.” He jokingly said, “Jeff Bezos is actually Lex Luthor (evil DC Comics character that Bezos looks like), disguised as the supposed owner of a super successful online retail store.” “However, he’s actually an evil overlord hell bent on global domination.” Ortiz concluded. “Sign the petition. Share with your friends and family. The fate of humanity is in your hands.” Hmmm. Read on.

If you asked me if I would like to sit and have a meal with Jeff Bezos, I would not get really excited. I personally think that at some point we (you, me, your neighbors) will be paying $11 for a loaf of bread, and we will ONLY be able to order it from Amazon. But here is another goofy story, so I will finish. There is another petition with thousands of signatures, again on change.org.  They are calling on Bezos to do something that would change the course of culture and civilization forever…buy and eat the Mona Lisa. Yes, the painting, which, by the way, is not even for sale. 😊 Obviously, there are people out there that need to get back to work and apply their brilliant skills elsewhere. Thank you so much for reading us this week. Thank you for getting vaccinated.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
