What I Heard This Week 01-26-2023

What I Heard This Week January 25, 2023

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine’s Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his “personal romantic relationships” by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin.Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, Tang sucks.

Let’s talk about weddings. Did you know: the average cost of a wedding in 2021 was $28,000 according to The Knot. A separate study from The Wedding Report says that after surveying 1,699 individuals, it was determined that the average cost of a wedding last year was $27,000. There is now a financial services platform called Maroo that gives couples the option of a buy-now – pay-later program, like putting your wedding on lay-a-way or an installment plan. Then the vendors pay a fee of a percentage of the total wedding cost. Personally, I don’t really believe people should go into debt for a wedding, but many do. Aren’t we supposed to be aware of the dangers of spending before earning?

I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together. Marilyn Monroe

As you may remember, I live with Teller the Wonder Dog who sheds red hair by the bucket-full. Then there’s Sully, Winnie, and Oliver Twist, the cats. Sometimes I have to sticky-roller my sheets before I climb into bed at night (because I’m allergic to cats). The sweet babies wait until I lock the door behind me in the mornings, then they run straight for my bed. There was also a time when I wore black clothing almost every single day. Needless to say, I now shop for performance fabric and easy to clean clothing. Hailey and I were talking at the office, and she suggested I try the Bounce Pet Hair & Lint Guard Mega Dryer Sheets. They’re pet hair fighters. Now, it’s not perfect but it is certainly better than it was, making life a whole lot easier. The sheets really help. I just don’t know what my life would be without them, and my Roomba. If you have pets, try them. Target and Walmart have them.

After just three hours of deliberation, the January 6th rioter from Arkansas, Richard “Bigo” Barnett, was convicted of all eight charges he faced, including interfering with a police officer, obstructing an official proceeding, and remaining in a restricted building with a dangerous weapon. If you remember, he is the one that posed for photos with his feet on the desk of Nancy Pelosi, leaving her a note that stated, “Nancy, Bigo was here bitch.”  Hmmm. “That’s how I sit at my desk at home,” Mr. Barnett said of his famous photo of him in Mrs. Pelosi’s office. “It’s such a habit for me to do that…it’s not nearly as bad as it looked.” He also brought a Hike n’ Strike, a hiking stick containing a 950,000 Volt stun device with spike electrodes, which he said wasn’t working on the day of the riot. He will be sentenced in May.

Texas Children’s Hospital recently published a full-page advertisement in The Houston Chronicle to congratulate J.J. Watt on his retirement. It said: Texas Children’s Hospital is happy to congratulate J.J. Watt on retirement after a life-changing career on and off the field. Throughout the years, the former Houston Texan has provided more than just entertainment for our patients, he’s provided lifelong memories. From surprise visits dressed as Batman, to toys and tickets to games – J.J. Watt’s influence reaches far beyond the stadium. Congratulations, we can’t wait to see what you do next. The difference is life changing. Did you know that J.J. Watt and his wife, soccer star Kealia Ohai Watt, welcomed their first child, a son, Koa James Watt.

Pepsi is replacing Sierra Mist with Starry, a new lemon-lime soda with a balanced, cleaner, crisp finish, designed to rival Sprite and win over the Gen Z market. It’s caffeine-free and available in regular and zero-sugar varieties, and with higher citrus flavors. I can honestly say that I have never had a Sierra Mist so I have no idea what we will be missing.

OOOh, I just read this. If you need a bigger Ziploc bag, then turn one inside out and connect it with the locking strips to another bag of the same size. Bingo, you just doubled the size of your bag.

About 21 years ago, Nick Day proposed to his girlfriend with a beautiful engagement ring, then she accidentally flushed it down the toilet the day before their wedding. The couple searched, even climbing into the septic tank, then pumping everything through a strainer, but still no ring. About two months ago, his mother hired a plumber to put in a new toilet and the plumber found the ring. That’s a nice ending to a fairytale.

Don’t forget the 50th anniversary of Brazoria County Day 2023 in Austin. Sponsors are still needed. debbiep@eda-bc.com or 979-848-0560. Since all events are underwritten, attendees do not have a fee. What a wonderful way to showcase your business or your community support.

The advertisement says: Like Chips & Queso, Beer & Barbecue and Burgers & Fries, we just belong together. Houston Boat Show & Houston Auto Show. 1 ticket gets you 2 shows. January 25th – 29th. NRG Center. autoboativeShow.com

As I said, I have three cats, two rescued from Harvey when they were almost 3 weeks, and the 6-month-old that was dumped in front of my office, after the driver knowingly carried him all the way over from Wild Peach in the engine of her SUV one evening. Anyway, I had experimented with every litter and litterbox I could find… I even mixed different litter, trying to find just the right combination that didn’t stink and wasn’t messy, and clumped properly. We even built our own litter box that used pressed wood pellets. When Oliver went through his recent UTI problems and then surgery, a friend let me borrow a Breeze Litter System by Tidy Cats. Pellets that don’t clump but absorb the odor and dry the poop out for easy scooping.  There is a pad at the bottom where the tinkle goes. I can’t say enough about this system, especially since I have three cats. As one cat parent to another… it’s terrific. No, I’m not being paid to tell you this.

The winner of the $1.35B Mega Millions ticket that sold in Maine has not come forward yet. Can you imagine? A friend and I were out to dinner the Friday 13th evening of the drawing, so when we left the restaurant, I drove us straight to Busy Bee and we threw away a $twenty, just in case the stars were lined up that evening. Note: My stars WERE NOT lined up properly that evening.  😊 But a Maryland woman won $25,000 from a Pick 5 Lottery drawing having won $25,000 with another Pick 5 game just last year. She said she had played Pick 3 and Pick 4 for several years, then decided to add Pick 5 into her routine. Her stars were lined up.

A mattress reviewing company, Sleep Junkie, is looking for five “Dairy Dreamers” for a $1000 paid study about consuming cheese products before going to sleep. They will be asked to track their sleep and provide written evaluations of their sleep quality, energy level throughout the day and reports on dreams and nightmares after consuming various cheese products before going to sleep. Applications are being accepted through Feb. 10th. $1000 and I know you like cheese.

A snake escaped from its terrarium home in a 6th grade classroom at a Kentucky school. The science teacher said he just didn’t put the lid on securely. Three months went by, and despite the discovery of a snakeskin in the classroom, there were no sightings of Gummy Worm until early January (three months) when they found the corn snake wrapped around a heater under a sink after students returned from the holiday break, just a few feet away from her former terrarium home. Gummy Worm now has a heavier lid.

Jeremy Renner says his snowplow injury resulted in 30 broken bones. Britney Spears announced she has changed her name to River Red. Hmmm. Rojo Rio. The Wiggles (Fruit Salad) have a hot new member named John Pearce that moms are swooning over. He’s the purple Wiggle, and now women across America are thinking about having more children or even buying concert tickets this Christmas for their adult children. He’s pretty cute. Exactly three years ago, the first known case of Covid-19 was reported in the US. In China there is a place widely known as China’s North Pole. Temperatures there on the first day of the Lunar New Year dropped to MINUS -53C – their coldest ever recorded. That temperature can cause frostbite in as little as five minutes. Have a great weekend and thanks for reading us. We appreciate you.

What I Heard This Week 12-01-2022

What I Heard This Week November 30, 2022

Today I walked into my office and found the evil ants… again. So, I put out a little ant appetizer, then watched them march from all over the office to devour it. The ants will be gone in the morning; I will vacuum, and all will be well. Then I read this story about a man in India sitting down to a dinner that his wife had just prepared and found ants in his rice, so he demanded an explanation. An altercation occurred and she strangled him with her scarf. Gentlemen, if you find any ants in your rice, first off, hide all the scarves, then try Terro Ant Bait before you mention anything at all to your partner.

The ants and the bees are, in many ways, far more intelligent and ingenious; they manage their government with vastly less quarreling, wastefulness and imbecility.  H. L. Mencken

Most of us know that we need to minimize our exposure to Teflon. Yeesss, you do. I was texting a friend today about the carbon steel pan that I just ordered for my son for Christmas. My son’s request. He wants a carbon steel pan, an air-fryer, and boots. My own carbon-steel pan is fantastic. I seasoned it once per the instructions it came with. Just like an iron skillet except you use salt and high heat, and I haven’t had to season it again in the past year and half. Nothing really sticks. I wash it out by hand each time I use it using just a little soap and a swish of a sink brush, then dry it out with paper towels. So easy. It’s light weight (that was so important to me) and I wouldn’t trade it. So, if you’re looking for a great Christmas gift… there you go. Just like in a restaurant, so don’t expect it to be pretty and shiny, but it won’t expose you to health issues like testicular cancer, low birth weight, infertility, liver disease, kidney issues and thyroid disorders. Look up Teflon Coating Health Risks.

Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason. Mark Twain

General Motors revealed a new electric SUV that is expected to be the cheapest compact electric SUV on the market. The Chevrolet Equinox EV will have a starting price around $30,000 which will make it among the cheapest electric vehicles of its kind. The average electric vehicle available today has a base sticker price of about $47,500, according to Edmunds.com.

Experts estimate you can reduce up to 15% of electricity used by your refrigerator by cleaning off the dust. When I read this, I immediately pulled the front panel off my kitchen fridge, and I was surprised to learn that I’m a super nasty person. Most of the time I only look behind my old appliances when they have to install a new appliance, or when I move to another house. There before me the nicest collection of dog hair, cat hair, dust, and dog & cat treats, but it’s clean now. Dust buildup makes the fridge use more energy to cool your food. In case you missed it, November 15th was National Clean Out Your Fridge Day, just in case you need more encouragement to get out the Windex and paper towels.

The great thing about getting older is that you don’t lose all the other ages you’ve been. Madeleine L’Engle

Sigh. A Florida woman (yep, Florida again) has filed a lawsuit (asking for up to $5 million) against Kraft Heinz’s for their Velveeta Shells & Cheese instant macaroni product, saying that it is not the easy, cheesy macaroni that it is advertised as. It takes too much time and too many steps to prepare. If you include ripping off the lid, adding water, and stirring in the prepackaged cheese sauce, then it takes longer than the 3-1/2 minutes advertised as the cooking time in the microwave. I say, what kind of attorney would take on a case like this. Then I answer myself with, “the kind of attorney that you probably wouldn’t want to represent you.”

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: TV personality Bill Nye (“Bill Nye the Science Guy”) is 67. Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. is 93. Singer Randy Newman is 79. Country singer Kristine Arnold of Sweethearts of the Rodeo is 66. Musician Paul Shaffer of Late Show with David Letterman is 73. Singer Gilbert O’Sullivan is 76. Actor Judd Nelson is 63. Blues musician John Mayall is 89. One of my all-time favorites. Actor Diane Ladd is 87. Musician Chuck Mangione is 82. Director Joel Coen is 68. Actor Brendan Fraser is 54.

Actor director Woody Allen is 87. Singer Dianne Lennon of the Lennon Sisters is 83. Singer-guitarist Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult is 78. Drummer John Densmore of The Doors is 78. Actor-singer Bette Midler is 77. Actor Treat Williams is 71. Actor Charlene Tilton is 64. News anchor Stone Phillips is 68. Singer Ozzy Osbourne is 74. Actor Daryl Hannah is 62. Actor Julianne Moore is 62. Actor Cathy Lee Crosby is 78.

Singer and actor Irene Cara, best known as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 musical Fame, and was the voice behind Flashback… What a Feeling, which she co-wrote, has died at 63. Actor Clarence Gilyard of Walker, Texas Ranger, died at 66. French-American actor Robert Clary died at 96. He was a survivor of the Nazi death camp during WWII. What I found most interesting was that he was most famous for his role as a feisty prisoner of war Corporal Louis LeBeau in the unlikely 1960s sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. Before 1980, he remained silent about his true wartime experiences. He also had recurring roles in the soap operas Days of Our Lives, and The Bold and the Beautiful, along with live theater performances and was a wonderful artist.

Businessman and politician, governor of Kentucky (1979 – 1983) John Y. Brown Jr., died at 88 from complications of Covid. Brown established Kentucky Fried Chicken as a worldwide name and global corporation after he bought it from Harland Sanders in 1964. He also owned three basketball clubs, including the Boston Celtics. In 2009, Harvard Business School honored Brown as one of the top American Business Leaders of 20th century, along with Ray Kroc, Sam Walton, Walt Disney, and Bill Gates. Brown married three times, once to former Miss America Phyllis George and once to a former Mrs. America.

Lauri Cherian is a local actor, teacher, volunteer, mother, wife, great friend, and is now a writer of poetry. Lauri will be holding a poetry reading open to the public at the Lake Jackson Library on Friday, December 2nd from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Congratulations Lauri and thank you for your hard work in the kitchen at Madrigal Feast. Madrigal Feast is now at The Center for the Arts and Sciences. The meal, dessert, and show are absolutely fantastic. You should try to come. It’s a great memorable way to start the Season. 979-265-7661. A Night of Worship W/ Justin Gambino + Friends is planned for Saturday, December 10th at 5pm, at the Brazoria County Courthouse. Everyone loves Justin. Congratulations Brazoswood Water Polo teams, (boys earned in the very first Class UIL 6A State Championship and the girls are the Texas UIL 6A State Runner-Up). Most of all, congratulations to Coach Robert Brown, the man who worked so hard in past years for my own child, for my friend’s children, and for continuing his tradition of being one of the most beloved and respected coaches at BISD. Hard-working assistant coach is Kiel Haner.

A new Alzheimer’s drug shows promise for slowing the disease but may contain significant risks such as brain bleeds, swelling and other side effects. A Buddhist temple in central Thailand has been left without a single monk when they all tested positive for methamphetamine. Oh, dear. Two never-before seen ‘alien’ minerals were found in a 2.5-ounce slice of a gigantic meteorite weighing 16.5 tons, discovered in 2020. Meteorites are meteors that survive traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere and land on the ground. A third mineral may have been identified, but it is still being reviewed. What will they find if they look through all 16.5 tons?

This one is fun. A man posted a TikTok video that showed him cutting off the zip-ties where a neighbor had attached her snow fence to the man’s guttering on his house. The next video he posted said, Update: this morning the neighbor put these two things in her window facing our house where the snow fence is. People responded saying that the two objects were motion detectors. Along with this information came ideas and encouragement to trigger the motion detectors 100% of the time… so the words I should use would be constant motion. Hmmm. How about a bird feeder that you never let go empty. How about a perpetual motion waving cat or an inflatable lawn decoration, then pray for wind. It’s my new favorite show. Who is bringing the popcorn?

A 1969 orange Dodge Charger, one of four built and previously owned by John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, recently sold at auction for $194,400. A Harley-Davidson FLH Electra-Glide motorcycle purchased by Marlon Brando in 1970, just sold for $216,000. Do you remember the Gianni Versace dress that Princess Diana wore in a photo shoot in 1991, that was used on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Tribute to a Princess issue in 1997. It was figure-hugging shimmering blue-green, and her hair was slicked back where it looked almost wet. Well, that dress just sold for $172,800.  A Marilyn Monroe worn dress from her final film in 1962, Something’s Got to Give, recently sold for $313,200. The figure-hugging silk crepe dress is printed with scattered painterly roses in shades of persimmon and deep cherry with a plunging V back. Very pretty.

Teller the Wonder Dog loves to chew on things, so I bought some bones with yummy centers. You know, very expensive fake marrow. He loved them, but I discovered that they shed crumbs of fake marrow and attracted many of our very dependable office ants, so I decided to take the bones to the SPCA for the outside dogs to chew on. Teller just doesn’t go outside during the day unless he is on a leash, so I loaded up the bones in a plastic bag with Teller very curiously watching me as I took them to the car, constantly giving me the look that was supposed to remind me that they belonged to HIM. Just imagine the longing look on a baby’s face when you take away their pacifier or bottle for the last time. That’s the look that was on his sweet little face when we dropped the bag off at the door of the SPCA. I had rolled down the window on his side and he kept looking back at the bones, then looking back at me like saying, “Wait, you forgot something, the bones, you forgot MY bones.” They grow up so fast.

Tom Cruise is set to become the first actor to shoot a movie in outer space. Yep. Plans are to take a rocket up to the Space Station and shoot part of a movie, but most of it would be shot on Earth. Does Tom realize that he just turned 60? I bet it’s hard to get him insured on a set.  James Cameron’s sequel to Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, is expected to be a huge box office hit. It opens on December 16th. Avatar made history 13 years ago by becoming the top-grossing film of all time with $2.92 BILLION in ticket sales. The Way of Water is three hours and 14 minutes long. It stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang. Newcomers are Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet. I just loved the first Avatar. Taylor Lautner is an actor best known for playing shapeshifter Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga film series. He just married and his new wife, also named Taylor, was Team Edward before they started dating, not Team Jacob. Silly girl.

In a symbolic break from the Middle Ages, Camilla, Queen Consort, has dispensed with the title of ladies-in-waiting, instead appointing a group of five personal assistants who will be known as Queen’s Companions. Queen Elizabeth’s remaining ladies-in-waiting will stay on, helping King Charles host events at Buckingham Palace. They will now be called “ladies of the household.” A name all working women share. Have a great shopping week. Remember, memories are the best gift.

What I Heard This Week 05-12-2022

What I Heard This Week May 11, 2022

The overhead aerial shot that was used on the replay of the (80-1 longshot) Rich Strike’s run to win the Kentucky Derby was just incredible! Supposedly it was taken from a plane. I could watch it over and over again. In fact, I did watch it over and over again. The leader horses came out really fast. In fact, the opening quarter mile time of 21.78 seconds was the fastest ever recorded in Derby history. The first seven horses to hit the quarter-mile mark finished: 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 18th, and 20th. They were dead tired by the time Rich Strike tossed his cigarette butt, and huskily stated under his breath, “I can take this,” starting his charge from the end of a 20-horse pack, straight to the win. Rich Strike’s original owners sold him for just $30,000 back in September. He wasn’t even in the race until Friday about 30 seconds before the deadline, when another horse dropped out. Rich Strike earned $1.86 million for just his second career victory.

An Austin woman who has been reselling antiques for 11 years, got a pretty good deal on her purchase of a 52lb., $34.99 marble bust from a Goodwill thrift store in 2018. Years later, Sotheby’s eventually confirmed that the bust was estimated to be about 2,000 years old, came from ancient Rome, and likely belonged to Roman military leader Sextus Pompey. Pompey’s father was Pompey the Great, a political ally turned enemy of Julius Caesar. Germany technically still owns the bust and anticipates getting it back in May of next year and displaying it in the Pompejanum, a replica of a Roman house based on excavations, located in Bavaria, Germany.

Never miss a good chance to shut up.” – Will Rogers

Today, someone posted a video of a dumpster outside Target ‘somewhere’ full of brand-new bikes. There were even unopened boxes of new bikes not yet put together. Their comment was “maddening, shameful and disgusting waste.” I would have to hear the rest of the story before I cast blame. Isn’t there a bike shortage right now? One article said it was because of tax reasons. Wasteful.

After just four minutes of bidding, one of Andy Warhol’s famed portraits of Marilyn Monroe sold for a record $195 million to an art dealer known as Go-Go. The pop art piece, “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” is now the most expensive 20th century artwork ever sold. Warhol painted the piece in 1964. The previous record for a 20th-century artwork was set in 2015, when Pablo Picasso’sLes Femmes d ‘Alger (Version O)” sold for $179.4 million. This is a perfect example of Blue Chip art, which is any art that’s expected to reliably increase in economic value regardless of the general economic conditions. Artists like Picasso, Warhol, Rothko and Pollock are Blue Chip. The article I read said that since 2000, the top of the art market has appreciated at an average annual rate of 8.9%, while the stock market has trailed it significantly, growing at a rate of 3.4% in the same time-frame.

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.”- Billy Sunday

A couple of months ago I thought of something that I needed to ‘remember’ while I was in my bathroom at the office, so instead of walking to my desk and getting a pen, I took an eyebrow pencil and tried to write myself a message on the mirror. The only problem was the pencil didn’t want to mark on the slick mirror so there was quite a bit of skipping on the letters. Like a bunch of skipping. No problem. I told myself that it didn’t matter because there was just enough of the letters there to remind me of what I needed to do. Well, it’s been months and every single time I go into the bathroom, I look at the mirror and try to figure out what I wrote. I still don’t have a clue.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Actor Buck Taylor is 84. He was gunsmith-turned-deputy Newly O’Brian in the CBS television series Gunsmoke. Actor Harvey Keitel is 83. Actor Frances Fisher is 70. Comedian and former U.S. Senator Al Franken is 71. Actor Mr. T is 70. Country singer George Strait is 70. Comedian Stephen Colbert is 58.

Last week country music lost legends Mickey Gilley and Naomi Judd. Gilley died at 86 after being diagnosed with bone cancer. Gilley’s great career in country music included 39 Top-10 hits and 17 Number-1 songs. He was a cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart and had survived car and plane crashes. His life and career changed in 1980 when he teamed with Johnny Lee to provide the music and setting for Urban Cowboy with John Travolta.  The movie was partially filmed at Gilley’s famous nightclub in Pasadena, Texas, and started a new popularity for country music and bars that offered line dancing and mechanical bulls. Quite a change from disco balls and Saturday Night Fever, which was popular at the time. Gilley sold his namesake theater in Branson, Mo. a few years back, but was still scheduled to perform this past weekend with Johnny Lee for their Urban Cowboys Ride Again show.

Mike Hagerty, the building superintendent Mr. Treeger on Friends and Seinfeld, died at 67.

It’s the largest single-day food drive in the nation. Every second Saturday in May (that’s this Saturday so don’t forget!), letter carriers collect goodness and compassion of their postal customers (that’s YOU), who simply leave non-perishable food items next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes, and distribute them to local food banks, pantries, shelters, and churches. It’s so EASY. Go ahead and put your sack or box out so you don’t forget to fill it for Saturday morning.

It’s been so hot that the trees are bribing the dogs.

This is from an old post but since I had never thought about it, so maybe you need to know too… some parents woke when their young son came running in screaming that his 3-year-old sister had somehow locked herself inside their new front-loading washing machine, and it was filling up with water and tumbling. A sibling had turned on the washer after closing the door. I knew that abandoned refrigerators pose a risk, but front-loading washers, and especially dryers, also pose a safety risk for children due to the potential for accidental entrapment, which occurs when a small child climbs into an open washer or dryer and the door is closed. A sibling unaware of the hazard or even an unsuspecting adult may then turn on the appliance with the child inside. Yes, there are safety locks you can install. Sometimes when I am folding clothes, my most curious cat Sully, quietly jumps into the dryer. I never thought about the cat getting hurt.

In the middle of a funeral procession in Peru, mourners carrying a coffin heard a strange knocking sound from inside the coffin, which was placed on the ground and opened. The recent car-wreck victim was alive and gasping for air. She was rushed to the hospital, put on life support, but died a few hours later. Some family members believe a coma may have been improperly diagnosed as a death.

Actor Bill Murray said his behavior, “I did something I thought was funny,” but it “wasn’t taken that way,” on the set of a new film, which led to a film shoot shutdown. The comedian said his actions resulted in a complaint from an unnamed woman. Dave Chappelle says he refuses to let the onstage attack overshadow his comedy shows. Local sweetheart, talented singer, actor, dancer and very first winner of “Models of the RunwayKalyn Hemphill, is expecting twins. Reese Witherspoon has written a children’s book based on her adventures from her childhood, about being a busy kid with a million ideas and lots of energy. The book, Busy Betty will be released in the fall. Dolly Parton stated earlier that she doesn’t feel she earned the right to be nominated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. BUT she has now reconsidered. “I am honored and humbled by the fact that I have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Parton wrote. “Of course, I will accept it gracefully. Thanks to everyone that voted for me and to everyone at the @rockhall. I will continue to work hard and try to live up to the honor.”

A Lubbock man was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which happened in 2021.  The day it happened, the child’s mother called 911 saying she had just found her (29-year-old) boyfriend naked, in bed with her 7-year-old daughter, and that she needed an officer quickly because the man was running away. (I’m taking out the profanity, but the story is one that all parents will understand.) The dispatcher asked, “And he’s your boyfriend?” The mother responded, “He’s supposed to be, but you hurry up or I’m going to kill him. I’m going to ******* kill him. Please hurry, please hurry. I’m fixing to kill him, hurry please, please hurry, please ******* hurry. He’s jumping the fence. He’s ******* jumping the fence. Hurry.” Then 911 heard the woman tell the child to get in the car. The dispatcher asked if the child was ok. The mother said, “Yes, I got home just on time.” She continued following him in her car. There was a loud sound and 911 said, “Did you just hit him?” The woman said, “Yes, he jumped right in front of my car, he jumped right in front of my car, sir.” At this point, I was laughing so hard and rooting for that mom. The child was later able to give specific details about the assault which led to his arrest.

Still hard-working 100-year-old style maven, Iris Apfel, quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed, a woman who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades, is launching an H&M collection of playful, festive, and fun clothing. There is a 2014 documentary about this amazing and talented woman. It’s a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes if that’s any indication of the appeal, and well worth a watch. She has style and knows how to use it, dressing herself each day like she is painting a picture.  Her costume jewelry collection is one of the best.  “A woman is as old as she looks, but a man is never old until he stops looking.” A quote from Iris’s grandfather. So true.

This is just a little FYI for you. As you know, Connie and I have been delivering papers the past few months. It’s not a bad job, but sometimes it takes you away from something you really like, like going home or eating. During our travels, I discovered a little place called Gaspachos El Charro, located in the former French bakery building in Richwood. They have a fruit cup that is fantastic, finished off with a little salt and lime. I’ll miss picking up a cup while I’m delivering, BECAUSE someone else has taken over the route for now… I hope. Have a great weekend and thank you for reading us.

His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
