What I Heard This Week 06-20-2024

What I Heard This Week June 19, 2024

An Oregon man drugged three of his daughter’s preteen 12-year-old friends with insomnia medication mixed into mango fruit smoothies because he wanted them to go to sleep, so he could go to sleep. The 4th girl only sipped her beverage because she didn’t like the taste. She then became suspicious when the man returned to make sure the girls were really asleep by moving the arm of one girl and putting his finger under another girl’s nose. The 4th girl then sent a text to a family friend to pick her up. The man pled guilty and has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Pete, a beloved peacock who had lived at the San Marcos City Cemetery since 2006 died recently. He kept watch over those at rest, often perched on a headstone or in a tree. Pete is survived by his family in Parks & Recreation and Cemetery Maintenance, past and present Cemetery members, residents from nearby neighborhoods and the San Marcos community. A celebration of life will be scheduled. No cause of death is known at this time.

My friends Jack and Laura sent this to me a while back, and I can’t remember if I shared it with you or not, so here it is. It’s cute enough to share twice. They found this sign in front of the fire station in Brazoria, Texas. Who says there is no truth in advertising.
HELP WANTED.
Odd Hours.
No Pay.
Cool Hat.

Several years ago, I read that when you’re shaving your legs in the shower, just use the conditioner left on your hands (I add a little more) instead of shaving cream. I’ve been doing that ever since and it works great… except for the winter when I just braid it . Honestly, I hardly ever cut myself. So, this morning I was in the shower thinking that I should print this helpful hint in this very column, because someone, somewhere, will find it interesting as well. Then as I stepped out of the shower, I see blood, lots of it. I have cut my knee to the point where I have to hold pressure on it before I can even dry off and band-aid it. Sigh. I think I just got overly confident. It’s still a good idea.

South Korean civilian activists continuing their long-running campaigns, launched helium-filled balloons in order to drop anti-Pyongyang leaflets, one-dollar bills, and USB sticks with South Korean dramas, K-pop songs and world news in North Korea. Most of North Korea’s 26 million people have no official access to foreign news. North Korea showed their displeasure by floating over 1,000 balloons loaded with manure, cigarette butts, scraps of cloth, wasted batteries, even dirty diapers, into South Korea. In retaliation for the trash balloons, South Korea restarted anti-Pyongyang broadcasts in border areas which caused the very powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to warn that this could lead to a very dangerous situation, threatening an unspecified new response from North Korea if the broadcasts continue. Whew. North Korea also boosts of invincible ties with Russia, with Putin visiting for the first time in 24 years, stating praise for Kim Jong Un’s support of the Ukraine war. Those are two selfish, self-important and dangerous, narcissistic guys that have huge egos. Our future world needs to be very careful.

Pyongyang is the capital and largest city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea, where it is sometimes labeled as the “Capital of the Revolution.”

RECENT BIRTHDAYS:  Actor Michael J. Fox is 63. Donald Trump is 78. Writer producer Aaron Sorkin is 63. Actor Johnny Depp is 61. Country singer Billy “Crash” Craddock is 86. Remember the song Boom, Boom, Baby and One Last Kiss? He was popular as a pop singer in the 60’s, then worked in a cigarette factory and hung drywall, later deciding to become a country singer with a cover of Knock Three Times. In 1974, Rub It In was a Top 20, then became a feature song for Glade Plug-In products.

Everything will be alright in the end, so if it is not alright then it is not the end. Deborah Moggach (I’m not sure if I like that or not…)

The Biden – Trump debate scheduled for June 27th will include microphone muting unless it is their turn to speak… therefore no interruptions, a coin flip to determine who stands at which podium, and no live audience. Sounds a lot like kindergarten. The debate will be moderated by CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, will run for approximately 90 minutes with two commercial breaks. A couple left a bad review of the photographer from their wedding… so the photographer deleted the gallery of photos where they cannot be recovered. End of conversation.

Joey Chestnut has been banned from the July 4th 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest at Nathan’s Famous original, and best-known restaurant in Brooklyn, New York City. Nathan’s Famous says Chestnut is considered ineligible after he agreed to become a spokesperson for Impossible Food’s vegan hot dogs. Joey Chestnut has been competing in the contest since 2007, only losing one time in his almost 20-year run. (Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs in the 2023 contest… defending women’s champion is Miki Sudo, ate 39.5 hot dogs in 2023.) Chestnut says that he doesn’t have a contract with either Major League Eating or Nathan’s Famous, and that they are changing the rules from past years as to who he can work with. Hmmm. Sounds like Nathan’s Famous should have provided a contract with Joey…  Impossible Foods jumped right in and supplied one. Just saying… is there really such a thing as bad publicity?

The more I know about men, the more I like dogs. Gloria Allred

The names for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season are: Alberto (One), Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Francine, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Milton, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie and William. As this paper is delivered, Alberto (One) should be visiting Mexico, which is really late in the season for a first storm. The name lists repeat every six years, unless one storm is so destructive and/or deadly that a committee of the World Meteorological Organization votes to retire it from future lists. This year’s list is the same one that was used in 2018, except for the addition of Francine and Milton; with Valerie and William having never been used before. When we ran out of names as we did in 2005, then again in 2020, letters of the Greek alphabet were used. In 2021, the WMO voted to just have two supplemental lists of names, one for the Atlantic Ocean and one for the Pacific Ocean. From 2015 to 2021, a storm was recorded before the official start of the season on June 1. NOAA is predicting 17 to 25 total names storms, with around 4 to 7 becoming major hurricanes. For us, it looks like from Sabine Pass, south to Sargent, the storm surge could be 2ft. to 4ft. Could be…

Lief was a 7-year-old sitatunga, a rare type of antelope who lived at Brights Zoo in Tennessee. Lief choked on a plastic cap from an applesauce pouch which are banned at the zoo. In fact, the zoo searches bags when people go in, but people find ways to sneak things in. Rules are normally in place for a reason… and not just at the zoo.

Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready fell off the concert stage while playing an impressive solo to a huge audience, ending up on the floor, his Gibson Les Paul guitar held way up over his head and over the bobbing heads of the audience. He hardly missed a note and continued playing the song. Security rushed to help. Isn’t rock-n-roll great?

June 21st is Make Music Day. Experts are warning that air turbulence during flights is getting more frequent because of our warming planet. Makes sense. A Russian military expert is suggesting that the government of Russia is planning nuclear strikes on U.S. ships. Pat Sajak (77) made his final turn as host of Wheel of Fortune at the season 41 Finale, which was called “Thanks for the memories,” which included a clip from his first show in 1981, and a farewell message thanking the audience for the “incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes, night after night, year after year, decade after decade.” Mexico has a new, first female, Jewish, president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum. Brooke Shields wore her comfortable Big Bird yellow Crocs on the red carpet at The Tony awards, which matched her canary yellow evening dress perfectly. She had foot surgery days before the event and refused to make apologies for her footwear. It was kind of cute. We should all learn to be less critical of ourselves (and others.)

I will put you in the trunk and help people look for you. Don’t test me.

Fifty-three years after a private jet carrying five men disappeared on a snowy Vermont night, experts believe they have found the wreckage in Lake Champlain, VT. The corporate jet disappeared shortly after departing for Providence, RI, on Jan. 27, 1971. The lake froze over just four days after the plane was lost. At least 17 searches have happened since.

A non-profit charity called Modest Needs, intended to help low-income families and individuals pay for expenses like medical bills and other unexpected expenses was actually being robbed by its founder, Keith Taylor, of more than $2.5 million… expenses for cosmetic surgery, $300,000 rent for a Manhattan high-rise, $320,000 for expensive restaurants and more. Personal friends were listed falsely as the charity’s fake board of directors, who by the way had all approved his expenses. What a shame to take donated money away from people that really need it.

Have a great weekend. LISA

What I Heard This Week 07-06-2023

What I Heard This Week July 5, 2023

A watermelon is 92% water so 1-cup of cubed watermelon contains more than ½ cup of water. I bought two watermelons yesterday on my way back from The Woodlands. I love chunks of watermelon with big plump blueberries, mint leaves or basil, and feta cheese. Such a great mixture of flavors, so easy to make and pretty, too.

Emerald Downs, a horse racing track in Washington, held its first “grandparents’ race” as part of Grandparents Weekend. Grandparents had free entry with over 20 ‘mature’ participants taking to the tracks for a 40-yard dash. Yes, horse races are fun, but speedy seniors are the best. The video showed two runners tumbling to the ground, but no serious injuries. It was cute. Earth saw its hottest global temperature ever recorded this week, and experts believe that the record will be broken again this year.

Did you know that you shouldn’t store fruits and vegetables in the same fridge drawer? Well, I didn’t know that. I’m doing well just to find a little bit of space anywhere in my frig to stuff anything. I’ve always had a second frig but the one in my garage is now old and tired, great for drinks but not for food, and I refuse to spend the money on a new one because that’s just laziness on my part. Anyway, I just read that some produce, including fruits such as pears, give off ethylene gases that make produce like broccoli spoil faster if they are kept close together. Consumer Report also said that fruit lasts longer in low-humidity while many vegetables last longer in high humidity. For fruits, your vent should be more open to allow for airflow, and for vegetables, the vent should be closed for higher humidity. Hmmm.

Aimen Halim, the man who sued Buffalo Wild Wings over its boneless wings (saying they are more like chicken nuggets), is now suing a home-goods company over a blanket that sells at Costco and Walmart for $20, saying that the product is not as green or sustainable as represented. Halim has filed at least three other class-action suits against companies he has accused of using deceptive marketing practices. He has sued over Tom’s Wicked Fresh Mouthwash (allegations of falsely marketing products as natural when they contain synthetic chemicals), KIND granola (definition of All Natural), and Hefty Recycling bags (actually made from low-density polyethylene plastic, or No. 4 plastic, which is not recyclable). I think I’m warming up to this guy. He’s just trying to make corporations and human beings accountable, which they ARE NOT.

Pepsi celebrated the 4th of July by releasing ‘Pepsi Colachup” – described as swagged out bar-b-que sauce. It is actually ketchup infused with Pepsi, supposedly great on hot dogs. Not available in stores, just certain baseball stadiums. Oh, darn. Speaking of hot dogs, Joey Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes to win the men’s division of the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest for a record 16th time, and Miki Sudo downed 39.5 dogs (smaller tummy) to win the women’s competition for the 9th straight time, at the July 4th event on Coney Island, NY.

At my house with four animals, I seem to go through paper towels very quickly, so I buy bar mops and bleach them quite often. But today I bought a box of 20 reusable kitchen towels made out of cotton flannel that are supposed to be a great alternative to paper towels. They’re about the size of a washcloth and shrink to fit a paper towel roll. I just folded mine and put them in a drawer. It will just take a little time to remember to use them instead of paper towels, but they sure work well.

Joseph Pedott, advertising exec, entrepreneur, and marketing whiz, the man who made ch-ch-ch-Chia Pets and The Clapper lightswitch famous, has died at 91. At 16, he left an abusive father and lived at the YMCA. With the help of a non-profit, he was able to attend college and went on to start his own advertising firm. Pedott was committed to giving back to the social services that supported him growing up, donating to student assistance programs, and funding for low-income, first-generation college students. When my son was little, he knew all the infomercials by heart, probably because that was one of the few channels he was allowed to watch on TV. And when I say he knew them by heart, he could repeat them word-for-word with all the necessary actions. Actress Glenda Jackson died at 87. Frederick Forrest, known for Apocalypse Now and The Rose, died at 86. Soap opera legend, Nicolas Coster of Santa Barbara fame, died at 89. Alan Arkin?????

As a Star Wars fan, this was so much fun to read. I was ready to sell everything and go have some real fun. Not too long ago in a galaxy in Florida, Disney designed a Star Wars themed hotel. The Galactic Starcruiser took five years to imagine and build, opening in March 2022. It is nothing you’ve ever experienced especially if you are a Star Wars fan, part live immersive theater, part themed environment, part culinary extravaganza, part real-life role-playing game, and so much more. The cabins resemble starship cabins. The restaurant (breakfast and lunch spot by day, supper club by night), is complete with the same entertainment that performed at Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi. The restaurant design is totally futuristic with unbelievably imagined food (delicious and fun), along with a Wookie, a Sullustan, a Zabrak and other familiar aliens to serve and entertain you. Disney invested hundreds of millions in this fully immersive experience with the starting price for a two-night experience per couple, about $4,800; $6,000 for a family of four. Disney had a really strong start but quickly used up all their die-hard super-fans that could afford the spectacular experience, along with corporate restructuring intended to cut costs by $5.5 billion and changing business plans. The last reservations for the Galactic Starcruiser will be those that reserved until the end of September. Oh, no.

The Freeport Historical Museum has a Shark Exhibit right now. Perfect for Shark Week July 11-18 on Discovery Channel, but you can make it last all summer

Interesting Facts about Sharks:

* There are around 500 known species of sharks.

* Sharks are cartilaginous, meaning their difference from fish is their skeletons are made of cartilage instead of bone.

* Sharks are also different from bony fish because they have eyelids.

* Sharks have placoid scales, which are smooth, helping move quickly. Fish have flat, rough scales.

* Sharks can only swim forward. That is because their fins are stiff and cannot be controlled by muscles.

* Sharks stay buoyant because of their light-weight cartilage skeletons. They also have really oily livers which helps them stay balanced in deeper waters.

* An average shark has 40-45 teeth in up to seven rows. Sharks lose teeth regularly and can go through 30,000 teeth in their lifetime.

* Sharks have been living in Earth’s oceans for 450 million years.

* The smallest shark is the Dwarf Lantern that grows to six inches, the largest is the Whale Shark at 41.5 feet in length.

* The largest shark to ever live was the massive Megalodon that averaged 50 feet in length, which has been extinct for 16 million years.

* You can measure the age of a shark by counting the rings on its vertebrae.

* Most sharks never sleep because they have to constantly pump water through their mouth over their gills to breathe or they will die.

* Sharks have amazing sense of hearing and can hear prey up to 3000 feet away. Their ears are actually located inside of their heads.

* Scientists think sharks may be color blind. Their eyes are similar to cats and can see better in dark and murky waters than other fish.

* Sharks’ eyes are located on the sides of their heads to give them a wider view of their surroundings.

* Some sharks living in cold waters can heat their eyes with a special organ in their eye socket.

* Sharks living in deep water tend to have light colored eyes to help attract more light, while sharks living closer to the surface have darker colored eyes to shield them from the light.

* Sharks can move both their lower and upper jaws.

* Sharks whip their prey around back and forth to break off large chunks of meat.

* Sharks have the thickest skin of any animal species; some with skin 6-in. thick.

* Sharks have the largest brains of any fish.

* Sharks communicate through body language, like zigzag swimming, head shaking, hunched backs, and head butts.

* Sharks do not have vocal cords, so they make no sounds, known as the silent killers.

* Sharks have few natural predators. Killer whales, seals, crocodiles, and larger sharks occasionally eat sharks. The biggest threat to sharks is humans.

* Sharks have been known to reproduce asexually (requires only one parent organism and results in genetically identical offspring, like a clone). This is known as parthenogenesis and has been documented in different species.

* Some sharks are carnivorous in the womb. The first tiger shark pup to hatch will eat its siblings.

* Most female sharks lose their appetites before giving birth as a biological trigger to prevent them from eating their own pups.

* Great White Sharks eat an average of 11 tons of food a year but can go as long as three months without eating.

* Blue Sharks are most endangered species on the planet, highly coveted for fins used in shark fin soup.

* Angel Sharks can ambush their prey in one-tenth of one second. Thresher Sharks use their tails to slap their prey to death. Bamboo Sharks don’t swim but use four different fins to walk across the ocean floor. Sixgill Sharks can have a litter of 100 pups. Bull Sharks can live in both fresh and saltwater.

* Shark attacks are extremely rare and usually account for four fatalities every single year worldwide.

* Humans kill 100 million sharks a year. That means for every single person killed by a shark, humans kill 25 million sharks.

* Most sharks do not like the taste of humans, so often they just take a bite then swim off. Reassuring thought. 😊

Happy Shark Week. Thanks for shopping and reading with us. We appreciate you!

What I Heard This Week 07-07-2022

What I Heard This Week July 6, 2022

Every once in a while, I read something that makes me laugh out loud. This did, so I’m going to share it. Basketball great Shaquille O’Neal (7 ft. 1 in. tall and size 22 shoes), has built a business empire worth about $400 million thanks to endorsements, franchises, car washes, restaurants, and everything else. He always encourages his six kids to focus on their educations, to learn to support themselves, and not rely on his fortune. He says, “I tell them all the time, ‘WE ain’t rich. I’m rich.’” I always tell my own children that I’m worth more to them dead, than alive.

A documentary called Ghislaine, Prince Andrew, and the Pedophile, suggests that Prince Andrew and Ghislaine Maxwell may have dated in the past. A timeline of their friendship shows Prince Andrew and Maxwell were frequently spotted together in the late ’90’s and early 2000’s, often with Jeffrey Epstein. An image introduced at Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial included a photograph of Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein relaxing at what appears to be Balmoral, Queen Elizabeth’s royal residence in the Scottish Highlands. A former Buckingham Palace royal protection officer says Maxwell visited so often that he suspected she and Prince Andrew were dating… sometimes Maxwell came and left several times during a day. Hmmm. I hadn’t thought about them dating.

I like to help people find things by pointing out that it’s gotta be around here somewhere.

Forever is a very long time. In April 2022, The United States Postal Service filed a notice of change in rates with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC). On July 10, 2022 (for the date-challenged that is this weekend), First Class Mail (1 oz.) letter rate for postage purchased at the Post Office will increase two cents to $0.60, from $0.58. So basically, it will now cost you 60 cents plus your envelope or card to mail something all the way across the US. That really seems like a terrific deal to me. Be sure to pick up some Forever stamps and greeting cards by Saturday, so you can save a little. I will remind you that stamps and cards are a great gift for the retired, or even the younger generation, reminding them to mail something, because receiving mail with your name on it is still the greatest thrill. Except bills.

Just saw an editorial cartoon with a man dragging a female while toting a gun. It said: This is my woman; this is my gun. One has gained rights, the other has none!

This is the way I understand it. Back in 2013, polite and clean-cut, leading scorer Steph Curry left Nike (he had been wearing the brand since college) for Under Armour. Why?  His dad says he was lined up to sign with Nike whose offer was worth $2.5 million per year, when Nike declined to match the $4 million offer of Under Armour. First, during the pitch meeting, Nike mispronounced Stephen as “Steph-on” (like Steve Urkel’s alter ego in Family Matters), not correcting the mistake, then the PowerPoint slide featured Kevin Durant’s name by accident, probably because they recycled presentation material. Under Armour was willing and eager to give what Nike did not want to. Furthermore, the Curry’s felt respected by Under Armour. I hope he continues to be such a positive influence for kids.

I always felt thrilled and amazed that I could put actor on my tax form. Geoffrey Rush

The Academy of Pediatrics is now suggesting that children are best breastfed for at least the first 6 months of their lives, then encouraged support for those that can continue for two years or more, along with suggesting nonjudgmental support to whatever a mother decides to do, or in some cases has no choice because of adoption, medical reasons, or personal decisions.

To my cousin Elaine who finished her last chemotherapy treatment this week for breast cancer. Congratulations! Afterwards, Elaine got to ring the bell. Cancer is so ugly. Those that have finished cancer treatment or have someone they love that finished, understand the ringing of the bell. It’s just a tiny hurrah.  Ring this bell, three times well, its toll to clearly say, my treatment’s done, this course is run, and I’m on my way. Thanks to R.J. for sending me the cute quilting stuff.

The city of Lake Jackson now asks even numbered homes to water on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. Odd numbered homes should water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, because the city has now moved to Stage 1 of its drought contingency program.

It’s so hot outside, the government is thinking about imposing a water pistol buy-back program.

Reigning hot dog champ Joey Chestnut was all prepared to win the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest again this 4th of July, when about halfway through the contest a guy in a Darth Vader mask made his way onstage and made ‘contact’ with the champ. Rather than wait for security, Joey Chestnut put the overly confident guy in a headlock, then yanked him around a tiny bit. Then immediately and calmly, Joey went back to eating/stuffing hot dogs down his throat – ultimately 63 of those dogs. He won again! But wait, last year he was able to put away 76 dogs. Could it have been that Darth Vader slowed him down? Good story. May the force be with you!

It’s so dry that the rivers are only running twice a week.

Betty White’s beloved treasures could soon be yours. Julien’s Auctions will have a three-day “LIFESTYLE” event starting September 23rd, that will have 1,500 unique items and personal mementos from the icon’s life and career. Items include her wedding ring (estimated starting bid. $600 – $800), special scripts (esb $3,000 – $5,000 each), a vintage Van Cleef diamond and sapphire brooch (esb $14,000 – $16,000), her on-set director’s chair from Golden Girls (esb $3,000 – $5,000), clothing, gowns, artwork, awards and household and personal items from her home will be auctioned. The collection will be displayed in various countries around the world before ending up at Julien’s … countries like Chile and Ireland. The collection will also make its way aboard the Queen Mary 2’s Transatlantic Voyage. Betty White had the longest-running career of any woman in television.

Dippity-Do. Several of us were sitting around the office debating on what could be done with an abundance of mint that needed to be removed from a friend’s flower bed. Such a waste but how can you use it? Mint pesto? Nah. You only need so much to muddle for Mojito’s. I was reminded of a very sweet, retired neighbor that lived in the same apartment complex with me when I was in my 20’s. She made jelly often. Most of the time she used various leftover jars because she was thrifty as we all should be, and because she didn’t have the money to buy new jars. Once it was plum jelly in a Dippity-Do jar, in case you are old enough to remember the amazing jell-like hair placement product. I could not bring myself to open that jar, but I told her it was delicious. Some of my friend’s mint is now stuffed in a trash bag in my car, and I want you to know that my car smells SOOOOO good. That’s what we should do, just carry around a bag in our hot cars. My friend ended up making mint jelly and gave me a portion. She did not use a Dippity-Do jar. I just happened to have two lamb steaks in the freezer and served them along with the mint jelly and a pasta salad. Great meal. Thank you, friend.

Tweet of the week: Wow, so glad they finally banned Juuls, I can’t think of anything else that has killed more kids in schools. Anderson .Paak

The FDA banned Juul, the popular electronic cigarette, from selling any more e-cigarettes in the US. The brand already halted selling its fruity flavors in 2019. Then Juul Labs won a last-minute reprieve from a federal ban. While e-cigarettes and other vaping products were billed as a healthier alternative to traditional tobacco products, hundreds of people have died or been hospitalized nationwide for lung ailments associated with the trend.

Costco has sold their $4.99 Kirkland rotisserie chicken for more than a decade. It’s hard to find a lower price because they use them as loss leaders to draw customers into stores. In 2019, Costco opened a $450 million poultry processing plant in order to produce millions of chickens, especially since they sold 106 million of the cooked birds just last year. But now Costco faces a lawsuit from two shareholders claiming Costco violated animal welfare laws in order to keep the chickens ‘cheap’, neglecting, mistreating, and abandoning their chickens. Hmmm.

Airbnb just made its ban on parties, implemented in the early months of the pandemic, permanent. Maria Shriver and her son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, started a company MOSH, a protein bar made for brain health. A worker in Chile submitted his resignation and could not be found after his company accidently paid him 330 times his regular salary due to a payroll error. Taco Bell is testing a new menu item featuring a giant Cheez-it cracker that is 16 times larger than a normal cracker. Hmmm. A Texas inmate set to be put to death July 13th has asked that the execution be delayed so he can donate a kidney.   Congratulations to Dr. Rachel Becker, Under 40 Brazoria County Leaders 2022. She’s our vet, and she and her staff are the best!

This is supposedly a quote by a forest ranger at Yosemite National Park on why it is hard to design the perfect garbage bin to keep bears from breaking into it: “There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears, and the dumbest tourists.” Love it and know it’s the truth.

As I left my neighborhood one day this week, there was a lone buzzard standing in front of a neighbor’s house like he was waiting for something. Teller and I stopped the car, looked, talked and growled at him. The bird was totally unfazed by our appearance, just quietly continuing his wait. My phone was dead (of course), so after I charged it, I took a picture of him and sent it to another neighbor who sent it directly to the neighbor along with a message, “Are you guys feeling ok?”  We are so easily amused. Thanks for reading us. Have a great week and hope you don’t find buzzards waiting for you on your driveway.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
