What I Heard This Week 09-01-2022

What I Heard This Week August 31, 2022

Last week, I stopped by Walmart after work to pick up a few groceries. It was just getting dark as I left the store and started loading up my car. Blackbirds, grackles, I guess, were flying into the parking lot with speed, like they had all been invited to a party and were encouraged to be on time. Suddenly more grackles were entering my space, and all the spaces around me. As I finished loading, a bit of broccoli had fallen out of a sack, so I threw it over to the birds. Peace offering. They thought it was great until discovering it was actually broccoli. Ahh, I had rice cakes in one of my sacks, so I opened a package, broke up a couple, and threw pieces to the birds, all the time thinking heavily about the movie, The Birds, which was partly inspired by true events of a mass bird attack in California in August 1961. Townspeople awoke to a scene straight out of a scary movie. Seabirds dive-bombing homes, crashing into cars, and spewing half-digested anchovies on their lawns. Alfred Hitchcock heard about it and used the idea for his movie which was already in progress. As it turned out, the real cause of the birds’ behavior was toxic algae, but how was I to know that when I was standing in the middle of the Walmart parking lot, with a broken rice cake in my hand?

Italian actor, sex symbol, photojournalist, and icon, Gina Lollobrigida, is going to run for the Senate in her country’s elections next month, standing as the candidate for the Sovereign and Popular Italy Party in the city of Latina. This will happen just weeks after celebrating her 95th birthday. “I was just tired of hearing politicians arguing with each other without ever getting to the point,” she offered. “I will fight for the people to decide, from health to justice. Italy is in bad shape. I want to do something good and positive.”

My kids loved the children’s author (over 150 books) and illustrator, Maurice Sendak. Who has not experienced the magic of reading Where the Wild Things Are to a 6-year-old? It is a classic that entertains both the reader and the listener. One day my Boston son called while walking to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which he frequents often. (That is the museum that had thirteen works of art stolen in 1990. Guards had admitted two men posing as police officers responding to a disturbance call, the thieves tied the guards up and looted the museum over the next hour. The case is unsolved; no arrests have been made and no works have been recovered. The stolen works have been valued at hundreds of millions of dollars by the FBI and art dealers. It is my understanding that the museum is still offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the art’s recovery, the largest bounty ever offered by a private institution.) How well I depart from the subject at hand. Anyway, Gage was on his way to see, “Drawing the Curtain: Maurice Sendak’s Designs for Opera and Ballet” because it seems that Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) was also an avid fan of music and had a successful ‘second act’ as a set and costume designer for opera and ballet. I know you don’t want to travel to Boston, but you can pull it up. It’s pretty fabulous. GarnerMuseum.org

Former Brazoswood High School pitcher and graduate, Blake Perry, is heading to Bluefield State University in West Virginia to continue playing baseball, and in the process, obtain his master’s degree in business administration. Way to go Blake. Everyone is enormously proud.

Former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman is denying allegations from two women who have accused him of sexually abusing them when they were minors in the 1970s. One of the women is described as the daughter of an adviser and manager to Foreman, while the second woman is the daughter of a boxer who trained with him. Foreman says, “I will work with my lawyers to fully and truthfully, expose my accusers’ scheme and defend myself in court. I don’t pick fights, but I don’t run away from them either.”

Mickey Mantle’s first baseball card, Commerce Comet’s 1952 Topps trading card in mint-condition, just sold for $12.6 million to an anonymous collector following a month-long auction. The price surpassed the card’s pre-sale estimate to make it the most valuable piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. The 1952 Mantle is one of the most coveted baseball cards of all time, often referred to as his rookie card.

Thoughts: Why do we have to wear seat belts, but the garbage collector hangs off the back of the truck?

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have written, produced and will star in a film about Nike’s quest to sign Michael Jordan. Damon will play executive Sonny Vaccaro (who actually signed Jordan), with Affleck as Phil Knight (co-founder of Nike). Affleck will also direct the film. Remember when the two of them did Good Will Hunting? They are a good team.

According to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, having a baby is pretty expensive now. Average cost of childbirth in the US is about $18,865 under large insurance plans, with insurance picking up the majority, leaving about $2,854. C-section births are a whopping average $26,280 with out-of-pocket expense at about $3,200. The US Department of Agriculture estimates that for children born in 2015, a family will spend on average $233,610 by the time that child is 17 years old, then you have to add college after that. I just moved my daughter (and the majority of my bank account) to graduate school. I believe they may be right.

Two of Paul Newman’s daughters are suing the Newman’s Own Foundation, a philanthropic endeavor founded by their late father, alleging that the charity has gone against their late father’s wishes by not giving enough funds to charitable organizations of their choosing. Newman granted the foundation rights to his name, image, and likeness – but not unconditionally. The one condition was that the foundation allocate $400,000 each year to each of his “Daughters’ Foundations.” “But mere days after his death, those Mr. Newman had entrusted with the stewardship of his legacy turned on him, made thinly-veiled threats of disinheritance to his daughters, and leveraged their control over his estate to set the stage for disenfranchisement of his family,” the suit reads. The daughters also say Newman’s will was changed about six months before his death, and Murphy and Forrester admitted that Newman did not remember the events of that day. “Mr. Newman’s wife and daughters were all shocked when his will was read to them because it was different in many important respects from what Mr. Newman and his advisors had explained to them and others many times over the years,” the suit reads.

Oscar Mayer is selling its first-ever hot dog popsicle. Yes, you heard me right. A hot dog flavored ice pop. It was described by some as a gelato-based treat with a lasting wiener aftertaste, which actually sounds better than ice pop. It even comes with a smear of what looks like mustard squeezed down the side, but surely not. The Weinermobile has been redecorated with cold dog written on the side – Oh, I’d love to be an Oscar Mayer wiener. That is what I’d truly like to be. ‘Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener, everyone would be in love with me. Maybe…

The international community is standing by helpless as we worry about the outcome of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine. The director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said,  “The world may be sleepwalking into a major disaster … even a nuclear war.”

My son was in Houston for a couple of weeks while he worked on a friend’s show at The Rec Room Theatre in Houston. I was excited just to give him multiple hugs because I do really miss him and our beer tastings. He doesn’t exactly come here to see me, I’m just an obligation attached to the trip, but I understand that and was thrilled to take him to the airport when he left to go back to Boston. I met him in the Heights at Truth Barbeque (#3 Best BBQ Joint in Texas according to Texas Monthly, but still not as good as Brian’s) and stood in line for about thirty minutes before we joyously amused ourselves with a ‘moist’ sauce-free brisket plate with sides of Brussel sprouts cooked to perfection, green beans still a little crunchy, and the most yummy corn pudding. We ended the meal with a huge piece of the most beautiful Tres Leches with one inch plus meringue on top, that literally melted on our tongues. It would have fed 4 people on a normal day. Then we headed to buy undershirts, stopped at Sonic and enjoyed a Dr. Pepper float, because we could. What a day! It is always hard to say good-bye, but he is happy and having a great time at school.

Miniature cattle aka Pasture Puppies aka Backyard Cows. I just read an article about these little guys. Cute, but not lap-cute. They are more pet-like than a cow, but still get to be around 800 pounds or more, which is, yes, quite a bit less than a mature real cow that gets to about 1,400 pounds. Their popularity has grown because of social media (of course), but they still require all the care of regular sized cattle; vaccinations, deworming and about two acres of land per animal, just less feed. Some people raise them for beef and milk, and for agricultural tax exemptions, as people do with bees. Hmmm. I did not know that. Pull up a picture. They are cute.

The Wireless Alliance is a company that recovers cell phones, smart phones, tablets, and other consumer recyclables. The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory is collecting these items to keep them out of landfills as well as raise money for conservation efforts. If you have old technology such as a phone, charger, tablet, or other accessories, please consider taking it to GCBO, or drop off at The Source Weekly office in LJ. We’ll make sure that they receive the items. Do your part for the birds and the bees.

My uncle died recently, and I was suddenly made aware of the cost of obituaries. My relatives have lived in Hot Springs Arkansas, but my aunt needed to run his obituary in the Waco paper where he had grown up and attended high school. It was over $600 for one obituary for a single day. She decided not to run the obit at all and just called most of his friends. What a shame, because people want to know when someone is not with us anymore, and they want to read their life story. Not everyone has social media, which some people depend on for all their information (right and wrong). I will remind you that The Source Weekly will place an announcement on the life story of your loved one for the same cost of any space we sell. That means a whole ¼ page space with a picture/s can be put on the pages of this paper for as little as $100. Less than that if you want a smaller space. Consider this information the next time you or your family has need of it.

My kids were worried about the fact that I misplace my phone all the time. An Apple watch took care of that problem with me now having the ability to touch my watch, and it beeps my phone. I might add, it is genuinely nice to have. I feel like Dick Tracy. Recently, a Tesla owner got tired of losing his car keys, so he had his Tesla key chip implanted onto the back of his hand for easy accessibility. Wait, it gets better. He implanted his house key on the other hand. He says, “I’m a huge tech nerd. I work in technology. You can’t lose your hand, so you always have a way of getting in your car.”  I say, hasn’t he ever heard of The Fugitive? It can happen. Have a fabulous day and stay tuned next week so I can tell you all I know about the benefits of body fat. Yep, I just pulled up the article. Hmmm. I have never seen the words benefit and body fat in the same sentence. 😊

What I Heard This Week! 08-13-2020

What I Heard This Week August 13, 2020

Did I mention the huge banana spider that had been hanging out over my patch of sweet potatoes? She was huge and quite beautiful, with a super-strong web that had captured quite a few unsuspecting guests. When I was in the garden working, I would tug at a bit of her web because I wanted to watch her re-make it. She never gave me the privilege because she just disappeared one day. Birds? Raccoons? As a very tiny, little girl, my family lived in Bryan-College Station while my dad worked for The City of Bryan and went to A&M. We lived in a small trailer park (I can remember tall pine trees everywhere), in a house trailer with huge windows that ran across the front of the kitchen. There was a ginormous spider that lived on that front window. My sister and I would get up on a cabinet next to it and were quite content to watch the spider for hours. My mother would go outside and mess up the web just a little, so we could watch her re-make it. When we moved back to Waco, mom put the spider in a canning jar and moved her with us, carefully placing her back on the window after movers had situated our little home in its new location, (which was real close to the old Elite Café, now Magnolia Table, by Chip and Joanna.) My parents had exactly zero money back then, so I guess it was the absolute cheapest form of entertainment. Pet spider. Nowadays, if a child needs entertaining, parents put iPhones in their hands.

Turning 65 is like turning 18 in Celsius. I am so old now, to find out my age you must cut me in half and count the rings. I am not 65, I am 18 with 47 years of experience. At 65, you can go to antique shops and visit your old furniture. Enjoy your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s because in your 60’s, your check engine light will start flashing. The first 64 years were rough, but I will never have to do them again.

If you have not filled out your 2020 Census, you can do so online at 2020Census.gov. Every response is crucial. So, step up and tell your friends and family about the impact that census responses will have on local funding over the next 10 years. Remind everyone that census data determines congressional representation and informs funding for health care, child care programs, libraries, public transportation, schools, job assistance, and other critical public services. We need all the help we can get right now.

They say that age is all in your mind. The trick is keeping it from creeping down into your body. Colonel Sanders started KFC when he was 65. Sir Ralph Fiennes climbed Mount Everest when he was 65.  Laura Ingalls Wilder started publishing at 64. Nelson Mandela was elected at age 77. Grandma Moses started painting at 78. It is kind of funny (not really funny, funny) how being old doesn’t seem so old now that I’m old, but I bet it’s easier to win anything in my age group. Awesome.

Several studies are showing that an experimental blood test is highly accurate at distinguishing people with Alzheimer’s disease from those without. It is not quite ready yet but is showing 89% to 98% accuracy. More than 5 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s. Current drugs ease symptoms temporarily but do not slow mental decline. The disease is usually diagnosed through memory tests and thinking skills but is imprecise and requires a neurologist. Spinal fluid and brain scans are invasive and expensive. A simple blood test at the family doctor would be such a blessing for this common form of dementia.

There are some things in this world more important than money – things like home and people’s feelings and where they grew up, and things like. ‘Do unto others.’ Aunt Bee

Congratulations to Howard Goe, owner and founder of Goe Harley-Davidson in Angleton. Mr. Goe will be closing his business and retiring on August 29th, after 46 years in the motorcycle business. He was known for the annual Toy Drive for the Salvation Army. There will be a special event and ride to celebrate his retirement.

He was mentored by Frank Sinatra and had hits,If I Had a Hammer, Lemon Tree, &This Land Is Your Land. He opened for the Beatles. His break came when Buddy Holly saw him perform. After Holly’s death in 1959, Lopez was asked to perform with the Crickets, so he moved to LA. There is a Lopez documentary to be released in 2021. It’s tragic that he won’t be able to see it. His last song If By Now was to be performed as a fundraiser next week for coronavirus.

On Saturday, I broke out of my mold, grabbed a couple of face masks, gloves (& threw in a cape), cranked up the old Buick and headed to Houston Garden Center near the beltway, to enjoy plants and the steamy outdoors. It poured down rain on the way there, but it was dry when I arrived. I bet there were only 10 people milling around and some of those were employees. It was hot but it just felt so good to be outside in a safe situation, just looking at flowers and not working for a change. Then, feeling like I could handle a little more of this ‘deserved’ independence, I headed towards Buchanan’s Nursery in the Heights. They were allowing in just a small number of people, so I stood patiently in line for my turn. It took 20-30 minutes, but there were big X’s marked on the sidewalk every 7-8 feet for those that needed to be reminded of your place. They had erected big canopies for shade, and everyone was masked, polite, happy, and properly distanced. As I watched, each and every person walking out, had either a full box or cart, and a huge smile. If you haven’t ever been to Buchanan’s, it’s just a happy place. I didn’t buy any plants, just new gloves because plants would have died in the heat while I went grocery shopping, but there was a boatload of pleasure in just walking and looking. I didn’t stay long because I knew there were anxious people waiting in line, but it was just enough to fill my tank…for now. Then I headed to Central Market where they limit the number of people going in, to fill my other tank, because nothing makes me happier than flowers and food on the same day.

Hurry to Krispy Kreme for Educator Appreciation Week and get one free glazed doughnut plus a coffee if you flash your teaching or school administrator badge. Limited time only. The parent company of Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A Bank filed for bankruptcy. So did Lord & Taylor. Polar bears may become nearly extinct by the end of the century, as a result of shrinking sea ice in the Arctic, if global warming continues. Zac Efron is going to star in the remake of Three Men and a Baby. The 1980’s comedy starred Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg as three swinging NY bachelors who live together and take in a baby left on their doorstep by one of their old relationships. At first, they are overwhelmed, but then they fall in love with her. One Georgia school district that reopened last week, has already ordered 925 students (08-12) to quarantine. Face masks were recommended but not required to be worn by either students or staff.

Songs of 1970. Yikes. Could these songs really be fifty years old? 1.Fire and Rain by James Taylor. Yes, I remember my friend Terrie, and I were at the A&W Root Beer in Shreveport, Louisiana., but she believes we were actually at Cobb’s BBQ. She is probably right. Either way, Terrie had a brand new gold and white Gran Torino and we had taken it out for the very first time, with the knowledge that both of our mothers had told us not to dare leave Bossier City, so what did we do? We headed straight to the bridge over to Shreveport and locked her keys in that beautiful car. A sweet young man took a coat hanger and popped the lock for us. I miss those days when you could unlock a car with a wire coat hanger. Carole King said that her hit, “You’ve Got a Friend” was her answer to JT’s lyric, “I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,” and, she played piano on Fire and Rain. 2. Your Song by Elton John. What a beautiful ballad. Have you seen Rocketman? We watched it last week and thought it was great.3. I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save, and I’ll Be There, by The Jackson 5Wow. Four No. 1 hits in a year. Baby brother Michael, had a voice that was way ahead of his years.4. Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head by B.J. Thomas. The song was written for the movie, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Paul Newman and Robert Redford, scoringthe Oscar for Best Original Song.5. Let It Be by the Beatles. The ‘Mother Mary’ in the lyrics referred to Paul McCartney’s mother who died of cancer when he was 14. 6. Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel. I babysat for a couple that owned this album, so I listened to it every single time they went out…over and over, again. It won Song and Record of the Year at the Grammy’s in 1971, but the duo had split by that time.7.O-O-H Child by The Five Stairsteps, a Chicago soul family. They got their name from Momma Stairsteps (as she was called) when she noticed that her kids looked like stair steps when they stood next to each other according to age. Remember, things ARE gonna get ea-si-er. 8. Maybe I’m Amazed by Paul McCartney. He released it in 1970, but not as a single until seven years later, then it made the Top Ten. 9. Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) by John Lennon. He wrote and recorded the song in one day with George Harrison on guitar.10. My Sweet Lord by George Harrison. His first single after the Beatles.11. Woodstock, by Joni Mitchell, made even more of a hit by Crosby, Stills Nash & Young.12. Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) by Melanie. She performed at Woodstock. 13. (They Long to Be) Close to You by The Carpenters. No. 1 for four weeks, then became the second-biggest selling song of 1970. The memories of this song had me at the skating rink on Friday and Saturday nights with friends, Jan and Roggie, working hard not to fall. I had my own skates, white leather that had to be polished every week to keep them spiffy looking. Oh, did we love The Carpenters! 14. Mama Told Me Not to Come by Three Dog Night. Randy Newman wrote the song that made fun of a square guy at a “Pot Party.” Three Dog Night’s version became their first No. 1 hit. OK, hope this is enough to trigger some sweet memories for you no matter your age. I may be 65, but at least I got to see all the cool bands and I saw many of them again with my two kids under the age of 23. That is way, way, better than seeing them the first time.

The Beatles sang, “Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64?Paul McCartney. What in the heck were you thinking about?!? I have never defined myself by age and I’m not about to start now. I just kept age to myself, but as impossible as it sounds, there are now only 1,825 days until I reach the next huge milestone b-day that could actually define me. The past 12 months have not been pleasant, just anticipating what was going to happen on this birthday.  Then COVID came into our lives and there was something else to worry about. It is weird. I was only one day older but now there is a label. I have run out of space to tell you what changed my negative attitude about this birthday but that means I still have stuff to tell you next week. Have a great day and stay safe. Wash your hands, wash & wear your mask, do not congregate, distance yourself preferably outside. We CAN do this. Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
