What I Heard This Week 02-23-2023

What I Heard This Week February 22, 2023

Tina just informed me that Sonic has a new BBQ Chip Seasoned Tots. Yes, warm, and crispy tots (just like the potato kind) tossed in sweet and savory BBQ Chip seasoning. Ore-Ida has the trademark ‘Tator Tots’ so we shouldn’t call them that.  You can also add sliced cheese, chili, onions, jalapenos, or shredded cheddar, when you place your order. Get early access to this new dish when you order on the app. I’m so hungry. While I was looking this up, I came across a recipe for Dirty Tots. I won’t bore you with the whole recipe, but it sounded fantastic. Dry-rub a pork shoulder, sear it in olive oil, cook on high in crock pot for 8 hours, make a homemade (or your favorite) BBQ sauce, shred the meat. Then cook your tots flipping them halfway through, adding shredded Mexican cheese the last two minutes of cooking time. Spread the shredded pork on top of tots, drizzle with chipotle aioli and garnish with chopped green onions. Yikes. I’m starving. This would be great party food. Bet you could add sour cream, or unflavored Greek yogurt if you want to put a tiny bit of a healthy spin on it. hah. Now file this away for later and read the following paragraph.

Now we are going to talk about pooping, so if you are sensitive to this subject then you need to skip to the next paragraph. A doctor is saying if you’re not having a successful BM then there are three things to do that are non-negotiable. #1 is positioning. Decrease the angle between your torso and thighs by leaning forward or using a stool under your feet. This relaxes your puborectalis muscle and straightens the rectum. #2 Each day eat at least 30g of fiber (non-digestible carbohydrate found in foods) – a mix of soluble (helps to bulk and soften) and insoluble (acts like a rake to sweep your intestines). Some fiber is both soluble and insoluble. #3 Activate the gastrocolic reflexeat something in the morning… which triggers the release of hormones, which then stimulates intestinal contractions, which gives you the urge to empty your bowels 20 to 30 minutes after eating. There you have it. Now, I didn’t know this, so that’s why I’m going a little further with the information for you.
• Soluble and insoluble fibers each have distinctive benefits. I didn’t know this so that’s why I’m going a little further with the information.

• When soluble fiber dissolves, it creates a gel that can improve digestion, reduce blood cholesterol and sugar. It helps your body improve blood glucose control, which can help reduce your risk for diabetes. Black beans, lima beans, Brussels sprouts, avocados, sweet potatoes (skins on), broccoli, turnips, pears, kidney beans, figs, nectarines, apricots, carrots, apples (skins on), guavas, flaxseed, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, oats, and barley are all good.

• Insoluble fiber attracts water into your stool, making it softer and easier to pass with less strain on your bowel, promotes regularity, supports insulin sensitivity, and may also help reduce your risk for diabetes. Wheat bran and wheat germ, oat bran, beans, lentils and legumes of all kinds (kidney, black, garbanzo, edamame, split peas, lima, navy, white, etc.), berries, (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc.), whole grains, (especially barley, quinoa, sorghum, millet, amaranth, oatmeal and rye), turnips, green peas, okra, spinach, radishes, rutabaga, coconut (flakes or flour), cocoa, apples (skins on), pears (skins on), flaxseed, avocados (Florida avocados have more fiber than California avocados), sunflower seeds, potatoes and sweet potatoes (skins on), dried apricots, prunes, raisins, date, figs, and almonds are all good.

Remember that bacteria lives on our skin, in the nose, but mostly in our gut, in our digestive system. Your body provides food, shelter and a safe habitat for this good bacteria, and in return the bacteria takes care of some of the things that the human body cannot do on its own. Most carbs, proteins and fats are absorbed into the bloodstream before they make it to the large intestine, leaving nothing much for your gut. Human cells don’t have the enzymes to digest many fibers, so they feed the good bacteria. And as always, ask your doctor. Now go prepare for a good healthy poop, and a much healthier lifestyle.

Italian actor Gina Lollobrigida died at 95. Richard Belzer, stand-up comedian, detective John Munch in Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: SVU, died at 78.

About a year ago, the family of actor Bruce Willis announced that he had been diagnosed with aphasia. His condition has progressed, and a more specific diagnosis is frontotemporal dementia aka FTD, and as we all know this is a very cruel disease which has no cure at the moment. Perhaps media attention will help bring attention to research needed to find out more about a disease that has affected at least one person we know.

President Jimmy Carter, the oldest at 98, longest living, and in my mind, probably the best past-President we have ever had, has decided rather than seek further medical treatments, he will receive hospice care at home so he can spend time with his family.

We should live our lives as though Christ were coming this afternoon. President Jimmy Carter

Happy News: Well… Mick Jagger (age 79) and Keith Richards (age 79) have teased in the past few months that they have new music coming… Now the word on the street is that Paul McCartney (age 80) and Ringo Starr (age 82), the last two surviving members of the Beatles, will be playing on the new (yet to be announced) album from the last surviving members of The Rolling Stones. What a story. When? How many songs? Tell us more. These guys are still so fabulous, they make age just a silly number. Inquiring minds want to know

Last Words: Murderer James W. Rodgers was put in front of a firing squad in Utah in 1960 and asked if he had a last request. He replied, “Bring me a bullet-proof vest.” Drummer Buddy Rich died after surgery in 1987. As he was being prepped for surgery, a nurse asked him, “Is there anything you can’t take?” Rich replied, “Yeah, country music.” Johnny Ace, a R&B singer, died in 1954 while playing with a pistol during a break in his concert set. His last words were, “I’ll show you that it won’t shoot.” Richard Feynman, a physicist, author, musician, professor, and traveler, died in Los Angeles in 1988. His last words? “This dying is boring.”

Against the wishes of secret service and the Pentagon, President Biden made a surprise, unannounced, and historic visit to Kyiv in show of U.S. support for Ukraine just days before the anniversary of the Russian invasion. “One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands,” Biden said. “For all the disagreement we have in our Congress on some issues, there is significant agreement on support for Ukraine.” This marks the first time an American president entered a warzone with no active U.S. military presence. Since news of Biden’s trip broke, Japan has offered new financial support to Ukraine worth $5.5 billion.

What I Heard This Week! 06-13-2019

What I Heard This Week June 13, 2019

Former President Jimmy Carter, only 94, broke his hip last month at his home as he left to go turkey hunting. He had hip replacement surgery and is now back teaching Sunday school in Plains, Georgia. The former first lady, Rosalynn, was hospitalized around the same time for what was thought to be a stroke, but they found that it was something less serious. They are amazing people showing us how to live.

“A family stitched together with love seldom unravels.”Letty Cottin Pogrebin

This one made my head hurt: A 42-year-old woman was struggling with insomnia, nightmares and hallucinations, then she started having problems holding things, texting and much confusion. Doctors found a lesion on her left frontal lobe and decided it was brain cancer, but after they opened her skull, removed the lesion, sliced and placed it under a microscope, they discovered a tapeworm. The good part is that she requires no further treatment. There are two kinds of tapeworm Taenia solium. One form is the adult tapeworm which is ingested from undercooked pork and lives in your gut. BUT the other less common way to get the parasite is when someone has the adult form, they shed microscopic eggs in their stool and if they do NOT properly wash their hands, they can pass the tapeworm on to others. (At this point, I’m totally grossed out. FYI.)  So, let’s just say that ‘these people’ prepare your food, then you unknowingly eat the eggs which then travel to your small intestine, hatch into larvae, penetrate your bowel wall and get into your bloodstream, where they migrate throughout the entire body. I’m never eating out again. Treatment for the adult form is with an antiparasitic medication but treatment for the larval form can be complex, depending on the location and stage of infection. What a nice, happy ending.

Sports Illustrated magazine sold for $10 million to the Authentic Brands Group which also owns Nautica, Jones New York, Juicy Couture, Frye, Frederick’s of Hollywood, Bandolino, Aeropostale, Drexel and more. SI has an audience of more than 120 million people online and in print but has struggled recently as print advertisers opt for the internet.

‘El Chapo’ aka Joaquin Guzman has lived in solitary confinement for the past two and half years. His defense team says he is now showing symptoms of distress and sleep deprivation and are asking for him to be allowed two hours of exercise every week, the same food and drink as other inmates, permission to buy six bottles of water a week and earplugs. Feds says, hmmm, maybe this is a ploy to make another daring prison escape. I say he buried people alive, tortured others, ordered mass killings, escaped from two maximum-security prisons – once with assistance from prison guards and once through a tunnel underneath the shower in his jail cell. There was one unsuccessful jail break in 1981 where an inmate arranged a helicopter escape for him. I think he’s lucky to have air to breathe. Guzman faces multiple life sentences when he is sentenced in federal court on June 25th.

A United Nations report from climate scientists now says that 1 million of the Earth’s 8 million species of plants and animals, are at risk of extinction. They are issuing a global distress warning. (If you think that I’m ever going to back down about telling you this…I’m not.) Humans are destroying our world and unless we take major steps now to curb consumption and reduce our footprints, we are basically cooked. We must eliminate overfishing, habitat destruction, burning of fossil fuels, pollution and invasive species. Thousands of tufted puffins, the cute little birds with the large orange beaks, starved to death on the Bering Sea. Scientists now say that climate change is the cause. The fish population which puffins rely on for food has declined in warmer water. The zooplankton which fish feed on has also declined. Listening? Polar bears are starving to death because the Earth is too hot, and they can’t find food. Are you paying attention to our weather?Pull up pictures of the polar bears and the puffins.

Dr. John, New Orleans singer-pianist, died at 77. His Top 10 hit, “Right Place, Wrong Time,” was the first single from his sixth album and in 1973, became his greatest hit. His words describe where all of us have been.

A Florida woman was arrested on felony neglect charges after a school worker said that the woman’s second grade daughter had hundreds of bugs crawl out of her backpack in the lunchroom. The little girl didn’t know when she had last had a bath. When a sheriff’s deputy checked the family home it was infested with roaches, cat feces and there was no food in the cabinet. How very sad. I’m not sure I could be a lunch lady because it would break my heart.

If you thought that’s it’s too far to drive all the way to Brenham to eat at Truth BBQ, then you’ll be happy to know that the second location at 110 S. “Why hope to live a long life if we’re only going to fill it with self-absorption, body maintenance and image repair? When we die, do we want people to exclaim ‘She looked ten years younger,’ or do we want them to say, ‘She lived a great life’?”Letty Cottin Pogrebin

It’s that time of year again where most people pull out the Round-Up and start spraying. A better, safer alternative is vinegar, water and Dawn dish soap sprayed after the dew is dry in the morning. Within hours you will love the look of ‘weed-death’. Yes, you may have to spray more often but it’s so much better for our environment. Or you could quit whining, reach down and pull them out…not an alternative that I’m terribly fond of. In the past, I have used the mixture with salt added but now I’m reading that the run-off with salt can do some damage to your surrounding plants. Try it.

The American Bald Eagle is a national symbol in the United States. Celebrated annually on June 20th, the observance commemorates the day in 1782, when the bird was added to the Official Seal of the U.S.

Two South Carolina men were fishing about 70 miles SE of Charleston when they happened upon a bunch of debris along with a bag floating in the water. They were interested in the bag because a school of mahi-mahi were jumping around it. Every time they passed by, they caught a fish, so curious, they pulled the bag aboard and discovered 30 bricks of cocaine. The men turned the drugs over to the Coast Guard and it was estimated to have a street value of $1 million. All I ever get is sun perch.

Medical testing company Quest Diagnostics said a data breach on May 14th, has affected about 11.9 million patients after an unauthorized user gained access to social security numbers, medical data and financial data, but not laboratory test results. Hmmm.

“If the family were a fruit, it would be an orange, a circle of sections, held together but separable – each segment distinct. If the family were a boat, it would be a canoe that makes no progress unless everyone paddles.”

A truck driver in California swerved to avoid a little white mound in the middle of the road and kept driving. When he saw the vehicle behind him swerve to avoid the same mound, he decided to turn around to investigate. He found an unidentifiable animal – maybe a goat or a lamb, but it meowed like a cat. He wasn’t sure what he had. It had big ears, white hooves, red eyes and super-soft short fur. It ended up being a 3-week-old albino fawn. The picture of this baby is precious. She is now being bottle-fed by a rescue group and will later be released on a private ranch where hunting is prohibited.

California Governor Gavin Newsom overruled a parole board’s decision to free Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, 69. Governor Jerry Brown has denied her release on two other occasions. Hooten (then age 19) and other cult members stabbed to death and carved up the bodies of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the day after other Manson followers killed Sharon Tate and four others. No one who took part in the Tate-LaBianca murders has been released from prison.

Remember the beehives that were knocked over and burned near Alvin? Well, the nitwits killed about a half-million bees. BASF has donated $5,000 to help towards the $20,000 damages so the bee yard can be rebuilt. The beekeeper’s association is offering a $6,000 reward.  ANY information?Brazoria County Sheriff’s @ 979-849-2441. To remain anonymous, Brazoria County Crime Stoppers @ 800-460-2222.

When you’re at The Galleria, remember the purple Zoned’Erotica sign (adult boutique)that has welcomed you into Dillard’s parking lot for quite a few years? It was built in 1979 and over the years has been a smoke shop, a Luke’s Hamburgers and a Roy Rogers Restaurant. Recently, the building was sold to Velvet Taco and they have some delicious tacos. Gage and I visited their Montrose location last week and what a treat. Four tacos and a very nice margarita for $24.00. The Cuban Pig taco has gruyere cheese, slow roasted pulled pork, shaved ham, peppered bacon, mustard, and house brined pickles on a homemade corn tortilla. Korean Pork taco. Slow-Roasted Angustaco. Shrimp & Grits taco.  So good.

Walmart, famous for their blue vests that say,How May I Help You? are getting a redesign. Later this year, employees will receive new vests of a neutral blue/gray with a pop of color on the trim and spark logo. The nice part is each vest is made from 15 recycled plastic bottles which makes it lighter, more breathable and more stain resistant. Definitely an upgrade.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. It’s so appreciated.

What I Heard This Week! 05-23-2019

What I Heard This Week May 23, 2019

Former President Jimmy Carter fell at his home in Plains, Georgia while preparing to leave to go turkey hunting. He had successful surgery to repair his broken hip, but stressed that his main concern was that turkey season was ending soon and he had ‘not yet reached his limit.’ Cute.

I couldn’t have said this any better…  “Dress like Coco. Live like Jackie. Act like Audrey. Laugh like Lucy. Love like Liz. Garden like Martha.”

Since 80% of the North Atlantic Hurricanes form from June through October, hurricane season is declared in Texas from June 1 to November 30. That is now HALF THE YEAR in case you haven’t noticed. Storms are most frequent on the Texas coast in August and September. There will be a Hurricane & Disaster Preparedness Expo on Sat. June 22, at the Brazoria County Fairgrounds, Angleton. 10am to 2pm. Free admission, Free hot dogs and drinks, door prizes, goodie bags, activities for kids and lots of INFORMATION. Event is sponsored by Walmart, HEB and CAER.  We all should go.

A 610-foot warship, the last in a class of three ships that are the largest and most technologically sophisticated destroyers built for the Navy, were christened. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson’s daughters, Lynda Bird Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson, smashed bottles of champagne against a metal star symbolizing Texas on the warship bearing their father’s name.

Robert Pattinson as Batman? Hmmm. Not everyone loves the thought of the Twilight actor putting on the iconic suit. One person said, “Don’t make the Batfleck mistake again,” referring to Ben Affleck. No decision has been made and “The Batman” isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until June 2021.

After Mother’s Day I saw all sorts of cute and/or emotional postings. Here is one that begged to be shared with you: “One day, when my children are grown, I hope that they still come through the front door without knocking. I hope they head to the kitchen for a snack, and slump on the sofa to watch TV. I hope they come in and feel the weight of adulthood leave them, for they are home. For my children, my door will forever be open.”

Last weekend I tried to save the life of a gecko, the little green lizards in abundance right now. I found him sitting in the middle of my open porch during one of our terrible rainstorms. I told my son that I needed to go out and save him. He put his arm around me and reminded me of ‘the circle of life.’ Gage said, “Some live and some don’t, Mom.  Go to bed.” Well, the little lizard was still there the next morning, so I gently picked him up and took him to my flower bed, where he immediately crawled to the porch. So, I placed him back in the flower bed and again he found the porch. He was molting, super skinny and looked like he was blind in both eyes, so I went out and dug up baby earthworms and fed him with tweezers. (I explained to the worms that I had been told that it was the circle of life, so some sacrifice must be made.) I placed water on a leaf for him to drink and again put him back in the flower bed. He was nowhere to be found an hour later. Then I Googled and found out that lizards are very territorial and will fight to the end if another lizard comes into their area. Sigh. I tried, little lizard. I tried.

Cinderella is proof that a pair of shoes can change your life.

Parents of a 21-year-old West Point cadet, Peter Zhu, that died after a ski accident in February, received court permission then to have his sperm retrieved and frozen at the same time he underwent organ donation surgery. The judge now says, “At this time, the court will place no restrictions on the use to which Peter’s parents may ultimately put their son’s sperm, including its potential use for procreative purposes.” His parents have not decided whether they will use the sperm to produce his child. Hmmm.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Actor Peter Mark Richman is 92. Singer Bobby Vinton is 84. His most popular song was “Blue Velvet”, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963 and number two in the UK in 1990. It also served as inspiration for the film of the same name. Basketball Hall of Fame Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is 72. Actress Ellen Barkin is 65. Actress Claire Foy is 35. The Crown.

Author Barbara Taylor Bradford is 86.  Her debut novel, A Woman of Substance, was published in 1979 and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. I.M. Pei, designer and architect of the glass pyramid entrance at the Louvre in Paris, died at age 102. Other notable projects include the renovation of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the John F. Kennedy Library in Massachusetts, the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, & the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods. They have not forgotten this. Unknown.

Grumpy Cat, the world-famous kitty whose signature frown is known around the world, died at age 7. Her real name was Tartar Sauce when she became the 2012 internet sensation. Her grumpy frown ended up on t-shirts, calendars, gift wrap, socks and a best-selling book available in 14 languages. She even had an agent. In 2014 she starred in a TV movie called Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. Madame Tussauds in San Francisco put together a Grumpy Cat animatronic waxwork with five different movements.

If a dog jumps in your lap, it is because he is fond of you; but if a cat does the same thing, it is because your lap is warmer. –  Alfred North Whitehead

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, and his wife, are now expecting their third child. This child will join Boomer (2) and Beckett (13 months.)

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian welcomed 4th child, Psalm West. Siblings are North, Saint and Chicago.

Aretha Franklin died of pancreatic cancer last August at age 76 and lawyers reported that she did not leave a will. In the past 30 days, three hand-written wills have been found in her Detroit home, including one that was discovered inside a spiral notebook under the couch cushions in the living room and is dated March 2014. Two from 2010 were found in a locked cabinet. It is reported that the singer, songwriter and musician had a net worth of $80 million. She gave birth to the first two of her four sons when she was only 12 and 14 years old.  They are all involved in the music business.

Please don’t say “Happy Memorial Day.” The reason for this holiday is anything but happy. Take this time to pay your respects to the soldiers who fearlessly fought and died for us and our country. They fought for our freedom. They fought for our rights. Put out your flags. Honor. Respect. Thanks.

  • What I Heard This Week 10-26-2023

    by on October 25, 2023 - 0 Comments

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
