What I Heard This Week 12-01-2022

What I Heard This Week November 30, 2022

Today I walked into my office and found the evil ants… again. So, I put out a little ant appetizer, then watched them march from all over the office to devour it. The ants will be gone in the morning; I will vacuum, and all will be well. Then I read this story about a man in India sitting down to a dinner that his wife had just prepared and found ants in his rice, so he demanded an explanation. An altercation occurred and she strangled him with her scarf. Gentlemen, if you find any ants in your rice, first off, hide all the scarves, then try Terro Ant Bait before you mention anything at all to your partner.

The ants and the bees are, in many ways, far more intelligent and ingenious; they manage their government with vastly less quarreling, wastefulness and imbecility.  H. L. Mencken

Most of us know that we need to minimize our exposure to Teflon. Yeesss, you do. I was texting a friend today about the carbon steel pan that I just ordered for my son for Christmas. My son’s request. He wants a carbon steel pan, an air-fryer, and boots. My own carbon-steel pan is fantastic. I seasoned it once per the instructions it came with. Just like an iron skillet except you use salt and high heat, and I haven’t had to season it again in the past year and half. Nothing really sticks. I wash it out by hand each time I use it using just a little soap and a swish of a sink brush, then dry it out with paper towels. So easy. It’s light weight (that was so important to me) and I wouldn’t trade it. So, if you’re looking for a great Christmas gift… there you go. Just like in a restaurant, so don’t expect it to be pretty and shiny, but it won’t expose you to health issues like testicular cancer, low birth weight, infertility, liver disease, kidney issues and thyroid disorders. Look up Teflon Coating Health Risks.

Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason. Mark Twain

General Motors revealed a new electric SUV that is expected to be the cheapest compact electric SUV on the market. The Chevrolet Equinox EV will have a starting price around $30,000 which will make it among the cheapest electric vehicles of its kind. The average electric vehicle available today has a base sticker price of about $47,500, according to Edmunds.com.

Experts estimate you can reduce up to 15% of electricity used by your refrigerator by cleaning off the dust. When I read this, I immediately pulled the front panel off my kitchen fridge, and I was surprised to learn that I’m a super nasty person. Most of the time I only look behind my old appliances when they have to install a new appliance, or when I move to another house. There before me the nicest collection of dog hair, cat hair, dust, and dog & cat treats, but it’s clean now. Dust buildup makes the fridge use more energy to cool your food. In case you missed it, November 15th was National Clean Out Your Fridge Day, just in case you need more encouragement to get out the Windex and paper towels.

The great thing about getting older is that you don’t lose all the other ages you’ve been. Madeleine L’Engle

Sigh. A Florida woman (yep, Florida again) has filed a lawsuit (asking for up to $5 million) against Kraft Heinz’s for their Velveeta Shells & Cheese instant macaroni product, saying that it is not the easy, cheesy macaroni that it is advertised as. It takes too much time and too many steps to prepare. If you include ripping off the lid, adding water, and stirring in the prepackaged cheese sauce, then it takes longer than the 3-1/2 minutes advertised as the cooking time in the microwave. I say, what kind of attorney would take on a case like this. Then I answer myself with, “the kind of attorney that you probably wouldn’t want to represent you.”

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: TV personality Bill Nye (“Bill Nye the Science Guy”) is 67. Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. is 93. Singer Randy Newman is 79. Country singer Kristine Arnold of Sweethearts of the Rodeo is 66. Musician Paul Shaffer of Late Show with David Letterman is 73. Singer Gilbert O’Sullivan is 76. Actor Judd Nelson is 63. Blues musician John Mayall is 89. One of my all-time favorites. Actor Diane Ladd is 87. Musician Chuck Mangione is 82. Director Joel Coen is 68. Actor Brendan Fraser is 54.

Actor director Woody Allen is 87. Singer Dianne Lennon of the Lennon Sisters is 83. Singer-guitarist Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult is 78. Drummer John Densmore of The Doors is 78. Actor-singer Bette Midler is 77. Actor Treat Williams is 71. Actor Charlene Tilton is 64. News anchor Stone Phillips is 68. Singer Ozzy Osbourne is 74. Actor Daryl Hannah is 62. Actor Julianne Moore is 62. Actor Cathy Lee Crosby is 78.

Singer and actor Irene Cara, best known as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 musical Fame, and was the voice behind Flashback… What a Feeling, which she co-wrote, has died at 63. Actor Clarence Gilyard of Walker, Texas Ranger, died at 66. French-American actor Robert Clary died at 96. He was a survivor of the Nazi death camp during WWII. What I found most interesting was that he was most famous for his role as a feisty prisoner of war Corporal Louis LeBeau in the unlikely 1960s sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. Before 1980, he remained silent about his true wartime experiences. He also had recurring roles in the soap operas Days of Our Lives, and The Bold and the Beautiful, along with live theater performances and was a wonderful artist.

Businessman and politician, governor of Kentucky (1979 – 1983) John Y. Brown Jr., died at 88 from complications of Covid. Brown established Kentucky Fried Chicken as a worldwide name and global corporation after he bought it from Harland Sanders in 1964. He also owned three basketball clubs, including the Boston Celtics. In 2009, Harvard Business School honored Brown as one of the top American Business Leaders of 20th century, along with Ray Kroc, Sam Walton, Walt Disney, and Bill Gates. Brown married three times, once to former Miss America Phyllis George and once to a former Mrs. America.

Lauri Cherian is a local actor, teacher, volunteer, mother, wife, great friend, and is now a writer of poetry. Lauri will be holding a poetry reading open to the public at the Lake Jackson Library on Friday, December 2nd from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Congratulations Lauri and thank you for your hard work in the kitchen at Madrigal Feast. Madrigal Feast is now at The Center for the Arts and Sciences. The meal, dessert, and show are absolutely fantastic. You should try to come. It’s a great memorable way to start the Season. 979-265-7661. A Night of Worship W/ Justin Gambino + Friends is planned for Saturday, December 10th at 5pm, at the Brazoria County Courthouse. Everyone loves Justin. Congratulations Brazoswood Water Polo teams, (boys earned in the very first Class UIL 6A State Championship and the girls are the Texas UIL 6A State Runner-Up). Most of all, congratulations to Coach Robert Brown, the man who worked so hard in past years for my own child, for my friend’s children, and for continuing his tradition of being one of the most beloved and respected coaches at BISD. Hard-working assistant coach is Kiel Haner.

A new Alzheimer’s drug shows promise for slowing the disease but may contain significant risks such as brain bleeds, swelling and other side effects. A Buddhist temple in central Thailand has been left without a single monk when they all tested positive for methamphetamine. Oh, dear. Two never-before seen ‘alien’ minerals were found in a 2.5-ounce slice of a gigantic meteorite weighing 16.5 tons, discovered in 2020. Meteorites are meteors that survive traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere and land on the ground. A third mineral may have been identified, but it is still being reviewed. What will they find if they look through all 16.5 tons?

This one is fun. A man posted a TikTok video that showed him cutting off the zip-ties where a neighbor had attached her snow fence to the man’s guttering on his house. The next video he posted said, Update: this morning the neighbor put these two things in her window facing our house where the snow fence is. People responded saying that the two objects were motion detectors. Along with this information came ideas and encouragement to trigger the motion detectors 100% of the time… so the words I should use would be constant motion. Hmmm. How about a bird feeder that you never let go empty. How about a perpetual motion waving cat or an inflatable lawn decoration, then pray for wind. It’s my new favorite show. Who is bringing the popcorn?

A 1969 orange Dodge Charger, one of four built and previously owned by John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, recently sold at auction for $194,400. A Harley-Davidson FLH Electra-Glide motorcycle purchased by Marlon Brando in 1970, just sold for $216,000. Do you remember the Gianni Versace dress that Princess Diana wore in a photo shoot in 1991, that was used on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Tribute to a Princess issue in 1997. It was figure-hugging shimmering blue-green, and her hair was slicked back where it looked almost wet. Well, that dress just sold for $172,800.  A Marilyn Monroe worn dress from her final film in 1962, Something’s Got to Give, recently sold for $313,200. The figure-hugging silk crepe dress is printed with scattered painterly roses in shades of persimmon and deep cherry with a plunging V back. Very pretty.

Teller the Wonder Dog loves to chew on things, so I bought some bones with yummy centers. You know, very expensive fake marrow. He loved them, but I discovered that they shed crumbs of fake marrow and attracted many of our very dependable office ants, so I decided to take the bones to the SPCA for the outside dogs to chew on. Teller just doesn’t go outside during the day unless he is on a leash, so I loaded up the bones in a plastic bag with Teller very curiously watching me as I took them to the car, constantly giving me the look that was supposed to remind me that they belonged to HIM. Just imagine the longing look on a baby’s face when you take away their pacifier or bottle for the last time. That’s the look that was on his sweet little face when we dropped the bag off at the door of the SPCA. I had rolled down the window on his side and he kept looking back at the bones, then looking back at me like saying, “Wait, you forgot something, the bones, you forgot MY bones.” They grow up so fast.

Tom Cruise is set to become the first actor to shoot a movie in outer space. Yep. Plans are to take a rocket up to the Space Station and shoot part of a movie, but most of it would be shot on Earth. Does Tom realize that he just turned 60? I bet it’s hard to get him insured on a set.  James Cameron’s sequel to Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, is expected to be a huge box office hit. It opens on December 16th. Avatar made history 13 years ago by becoming the top-grossing film of all time with $2.92 BILLION in ticket sales. The Way of Water is three hours and 14 minutes long. It stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang. Newcomers are Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet. I just loved the first Avatar. Taylor Lautner is an actor best known for playing shapeshifter Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga film series. He just married and his new wife, also named Taylor, was Team Edward before they started dating, not Team Jacob. Silly girl.

In a symbolic break from the Middle Ages, Camilla, Queen Consort, has dispensed with the title of ladies-in-waiting, instead appointing a group of five personal assistants who will be known as Queen’s Companions. Queen Elizabeth’s remaining ladies-in-waiting will stay on, helping King Charles host events at Buckingham Palace. They will now be called “ladies of the household.” A name all working women share. Have a great shopping week. Remember, memories are the best gift.

What I Heard This Week! 07-09-2020

What I Heard This Week July 8, 2020

As I left the office today, to take the very puny bank deposit and to pick up some lunch, something great happened…besides Cane’s Chicken. (It is a luxury that I allow myself every month or so, then I consume all the fries before I even get back to the office.) As I walked to my car, which was parked under the only shade tree on Parking Way, a mature gentleman said something to me from his white Chevrolet PU. I had my mask on (which as crazy as it sounds, impairs my hearing) so I had to get a little closer to the truck and asked him to repeat himself. He said, “You sure look nice today.” WooHoo!!!! Party. Dance in the street. I did have on one of my favorite dresses, my new red bandana mask, and my hair was clean, but still. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. White Truck. I know I walked away feeling a little bit taller, with new spring in my step the rest of the day. Even after I ate four pieces of fried chicken and every single one of my fries. 😊

Disgraced 66-year-old Jeffrey Epstein died in jail by apparent suicide after more than a dozen lawsuits against his estate stating women and teen girls suffered sexual abuse from him and his enablers, at his homes in Manhattan, the Virgin Islands, Paris, New Mexico and Florida. Last week, Ghislaine Maxwell, 58, a British socialite, confidante, companion, and ex-girlfriend of Epstein, was arrested by the FBI and accused of overseeing his alleged sex trafficking ring. If convicted on the charges, Maxwell faces up to 35 years in prison. It was reported that she is ready to give the FBI some big names associated with crimes she is accused of, in order to save herself. Yikes. Prince Andrew. Bill Clinton. Shades of Heidi Fleiss and her “little black book.”

Did you watch the filmed version of Broadway’s Hamilton on July 3rd? For those of you that have lived in a cave for the past five years, Hamilton is a song-filled story of one of America’s foremost founding fathers that won 11 Tony’s, as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. They filmed it in only three days with the original Broadway cast, which consists mostly of Black, Latino and Asian American performers, including Lin-Manuel Miranda himself, who wrote and starred in the title role of Alexander Hamilton. Watching it filmed this way, means everyone gets the best seat in the house. Fantastic. It is on Disney+ and only on Disney+. Bribe a friend if you don’t have it. Definitely, worth it.

Now might be a good time to stock up on European chocolates, olives and beer made with malt, which could be hit with tariffs of as much as 100%. Do not hoard like toilet paper.  Kristen Stewart (Twilight) is playing Princess Diana in a new movie, about her divorce from Prince Charles… The female Fort Hood soldier missing since April, was bludgeoned with a hammer by another soldier on the base, dismembered and dumped near the Leon River about 20 miles away. The soldier killed himself, and a 22-year-old female civilian has been arrested and now faces one count of conspiracy to tamper with evidence… Are COVID Parties a real thing? Put your money in the kitty and the first one sick, rakes it all-in to help pay for medical or funeral expenses, I guess. I worked hard but could not find any hard evidence to back this up, so for now I would say it’s just a rumor. A very sick rumor.

When baseball returns, there will no longer be any spitting. What, no spitting? Why the heck do they spit so much, anyway. They spit in their gloves, they spit on the ball (spitballs), they spit sunflower seeds, they spit for no reason at all. Perhaps baseball pacifiers are needed to plug this problem.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Beatles legend Ringo Starr is 80. It Don’t Come Easy. Did you see his birthday special? Extremely hard to ‘imagine’ that he is 80.

Charlie Daniels, member of Country Music Hall of Fame who sang “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” recorded with Bob Dylan, died after suffering a stroke. He was 83. He was also an outspoken supporter of U.S. veterans. Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who married her former 6th grade student after she was convicted of raping him, died of cancer at 58. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental condition they say caused her reckless behavior, which did not gain her any sympathy.

On July 4th, Kayne West announced that he will be running for President in 2020. Hmmm. He has also (previously) claimed to be a billionaire. It was also announced on another day, that his clothing company, Yeezy, was granted between $2 million and $5 million from the Paycheck Protection Program meant to help small businesses keep workers employed during the COVID-19 induced shutdown.

Studies have found that people touch their faces 23 times or more in an hour. It is believed that wearing gloves can help break the habit of frequently touching your face. When I’m out, I wear gardening gloves because they can be thrown in the wash.  I am wearing my hair pulled back (makes it way easier to get a mask off/on, and less flyaway hairs to tend to), and no mascara. Even if this virus gets better, viruses like this are here to stay, so we need to create better habits for ourselves now. Washing your hands for 20 seconds will not help if you do not keep your hands off your face. End of sermon.

Corona-coaster (noun): The ups and downs of the pandemic. One day you are loving your bubble, doing workouts and baking sourdough, the next you’re crying, drinking wine for breakfast and missing people you don’t even like.

“If these projections are even halfway right, there’s no health system in the country that can accommodate this.” Dr. Peter Hotez, Immunologist at Baylor College of Medicine, commenting on a new Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania model predicting daily cases of coronavirus will more than triple in the largest counties within the next four weeks, if there is no change in social distancing practices. These are the same folks that several weeks back, predicted a spike in cases based on cellphone data, showing that without stay-at-home restrictions, most Texans were not social distancing.

So, you’re not too worried about bringing the virus home to your family, and you are sure not concerned about getting the virus yourself, because you are healthy and will be good-as-new in a couple of weeks, as you slip smoothly back into your old life…did you hear about healthy Broadway star Nick Cordero, 41, who died after battling COVID-19 for 95 long days. For the math-challenged, that’s three months. He endured a medically induced coma, ventilator, dialysis, a specialized heart-lung bypass machine, his heart stopped, he had minor heart attacks and sepsis, the amputation of his right leg, and a tracheotomy. Had he lived he would have needed a double lung transplant. Doctors are just now beginning to learn what the long-term damage will be to the survivors of COVID-19. Kidney damage may require dialysis, strokes and blood clots can lead to disability, and scarred lungs to permanently decreased lung function. You may go home with a walker and need to re-learn to walk, swallow, eat and talk. Practically every organ system can be affected, if not by the virus, then by the immune response.

Washing your face mask is as important as wearing it. One report says that a detectable level of the infectious virus could still be present on the outer layer of a mask for up to seven days, at room temperature. Homemade masks are more susceptible to viruses because they can actually carry the virus. (In a perfect, perfect, world we would all have N95 masks, but we do not.)  How many times a day do you touch your mask? I know I touch mine about once a minute. We are NOT supposed to touch the mask except to take it off and then you touch just the ear loops. Then wash your hands. Hmmm. I know you do not want to hear this, but up to 97% of the air’s virus particles can easily penetrate cloth masks. That is why they say that wearing a mask is to protect the other people, not yourself. What can we do?  Wash your mask every day! Put it directly into the washing machine or sink. In a perfect world, front line workers or people that spend their time in public places where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, like grocery store checkers, waiters and food service, all store clerks, etc., should not be wearing their masks for more than 2 hours because the dampness from our breath makes it less effective as a barrier against coronavirus transmission. How do we wash them? Heat. Washing machines are the best, with the type of fabric determining the temperature of the water. It needs to be the warmest possible water that the material will tolerate, preferably hot water. Detergents with heavy-duty-stain-removing or bleach-like compounds and active cleaning ingredients should be used. You can wash them with your other clothes. You can also disinfect your mask by ironing or putting in a dry-heat oven for 20 minutes at about 160 degrees. This would be good for an otherwise disposable mask that cannot be washed. My daughter believes that I should not tell you about the oven because someone might forget their mask and it would end up crispy…sounds like something that her mother would do. Better use that method as a last resort and be sure to set a timer. If hand washing is the only alternative, then lather with soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds with warm to hot water. Hot air drying or ironing should follow, provided it is safe for the fabric. Sometimes I leave my mask and gloves in my hot car. When temperatures outside range from 80 degrees to 100 degrees, the temperature inside a car can quickly climb to between 130 to 172 degrees.

In 1907, a Boston attorney created a cup made from paper, so it could be thrown away. At the time, there were no disposable paper tissues, paper towels, paper plates…nothing like it. He called it the “Health Kup” and in 1912, Smithsonian Magazine even called the cup a “life-saving technology,” that will help stop the spread of disease. For ten years the brand did NOT fly off the shelves. Then in 1918 the Spanish flu tore through the U.S., the Health Kup was rebranded to the Dixie Cup, an advertising campaign was launched, stressing that uncounted germs cluster and breed on glass…influenza, pneumonia, diphtheria and worse, and the rest is history.

Fourth of July – Flags were flying all over our small towns for the Fourth. The flags in the esplanade downtown LJ and in front of Walmart are sponsored by businesses associated with Brazosport Breakfast Lion’s Club. (See our Thank-You Sponsors ad on page 9. You can be a sponsor!) Castleberry Insurance, American Realty and State Farm had flags around the perimeters of their buildings. In my neighborhood, several of us lined our front yards and the entrance of the subdivision with flags, the same way we do our lights at Christmas. All over town, people were flying flags in their front yards. There was a small but mighty boat parade down Oyster Creek, blasting air horns and showing off creatively decorated boats. It was great. Had I known about it I would have joined them in my kayak. It was an inspiration, leaving me wondering if we really needed fireworks.  We celebrated the red, white, and blue in a different way this year, with sincere appreciation for the things we have.

Wash or wipe your groceries before you put them up. Just pretend that every item has been touched by someone with the virus. We set up a station on the kitchen table. Every sack is put on the floor, then groceries are placed on the table to dry before we put them up. Don’t forget your reusable sacks, too. It may not be a perfect solution, but it’s what we have. Remember that the virus remains in charge, we are just along for the ride. Hang in there, my friends. Thanks for reading us. Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
