What I Heard This Week 05-12-2022

What I Heard This Week May 11, 2022

The overhead aerial shot that was used on the replay of the (80-1 longshot) Rich Strike’s run to win the Kentucky Derby was just incredible! Supposedly it was taken from a plane. I could watch it over and over again. In fact, I did watch it over and over again. The leader horses came out really fast. In fact, the opening quarter mile time of 21.78 seconds was the fastest ever recorded in Derby history. The first seven horses to hit the quarter-mile mark finished: 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 18th, and 20th. They were dead tired by the time Rich Strike tossed his cigarette butt, and huskily stated under his breath, “I can take this,” starting his charge from the end of a 20-horse pack, straight to the win. Rich Strike’s original owners sold him for just $30,000 back in September. He wasn’t even in the race until Friday about 30 seconds before the deadline, when another horse dropped out. Rich Strike earned $1.86 million for just his second career victory.

An Austin woman who has been reselling antiques for 11 years, got a pretty good deal on her purchase of a 52lb., $34.99 marble bust from a Goodwill thrift store in 2018. Years later, Sotheby’s eventually confirmed that the bust was estimated to be about 2,000 years old, came from ancient Rome, and likely belonged to Roman military leader Sextus Pompey. Pompey’s father was Pompey the Great, a political ally turned enemy of Julius Caesar. Germany technically still owns the bust and anticipates getting it back in May of next year and displaying it in the Pompejanum, a replica of a Roman house based on excavations, located in Bavaria, Germany.

Never miss a good chance to shut up.” – Will Rogers

Today, someone posted a video of a dumpster outside Target ‘somewhere’ full of brand-new bikes. There were even unopened boxes of new bikes not yet put together. Their comment was “maddening, shameful and disgusting waste.” I would have to hear the rest of the story before I cast blame. Isn’t there a bike shortage right now? One article said it was because of tax reasons. Wasteful.

After just four minutes of bidding, one of Andy Warhol’s famed portraits of Marilyn Monroe sold for a record $195 million to an art dealer known as Go-Go. The pop art piece, “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” is now the most expensive 20th century artwork ever sold. Warhol painted the piece in 1964. The previous record for a 20th-century artwork was set in 2015, when Pablo Picasso’sLes Femmes d ‘Alger (Version O)” sold for $179.4 million. This is a perfect example of Blue Chip art, which is any art that’s expected to reliably increase in economic value regardless of the general economic conditions. Artists like Picasso, Warhol, Rothko and Pollock are Blue Chip. The article I read said that since 2000, the top of the art market has appreciated at an average annual rate of 8.9%, while the stock market has trailed it significantly, growing at a rate of 3.4% in the same time-frame.

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.”- Billy Sunday

A couple of months ago I thought of something that I needed to ‘remember’ while I was in my bathroom at the office, so instead of walking to my desk and getting a pen, I took an eyebrow pencil and tried to write myself a message on the mirror. The only problem was the pencil didn’t want to mark on the slick mirror so there was quite a bit of skipping on the letters. Like a bunch of skipping. No problem. I told myself that it didn’t matter because there was just enough of the letters there to remind me of what I needed to do. Well, it’s been months and every single time I go into the bathroom, I look at the mirror and try to figure out what I wrote. I still don’t have a clue.

Last week country music lost legends Mickey Gilley and Naomi Judd. Gilley died at 86 after being diagnosed with bone cancer. Gilley’s great career in country music included 39 Top-10 hits and 17 Number-1 songs. He was a cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart and had survived car and plane crashes. His life and career changed in 1980 when he teamed with Johnny Lee to provide the music and setting for Urban Cowboy with John Travolta.  The movie was partially filmed at Gilley’s famous nightclub in Pasadena, Texas, and started a new popularity for country music and bars that offered line dancing and mechanical bulls. Quite a change from disco balls and Saturday Night Fever, which was popular at the time. Gilley sold his namesake theater in Branson, Mo. a few years back, but was still scheduled to perform this past weekend with Johnny Lee for their Urban Cowboys Ride Again show.

Mike Hagerty, the building superintendent Mr. Treeger on Friends and Seinfeld, died at 67.

It’s the largest single-day food drive in the nation. Every second Saturday in May (that’s this Saturday so don’t forget!), letter carriers collect goodness and compassion of their postal customers (that’s YOU), who simply leave non-perishable food items next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes, and distribute them to local food banks, pantries, shelters, and churches. It’s so EASY. Go ahead and put your sack or box out so you don’t forget to fill it for Saturday morning.

It’s been so hot that the trees are bribing the dogs.

This is from an old post but since I had never thought about it, so maybe you need to know too… some parents woke when their young son came running in screaming that his 3-year-old sister had somehow locked herself inside their new front-loading washing machine, and it was filling up with water and tumbling. A sibling had turned on the washer after closing the door. I knew that abandoned refrigerators pose a risk, but front-loading washers, and especially dryers, also pose a safety risk for children due to the potential for accidental entrapment, which occurs when a small child climbs into an open washer or dryer and the door is closed. A sibling unaware of the hazard or even an unsuspecting adult may then turn on the appliance with the child inside. Yes, there are safety locks you can install. Sometimes when I am folding clothes, my most curious cat Sully, quietly jumps into the dryer. I never thought about the cat getting hurt.

In the middle of a funeral procession in Peru, mourners carrying a coffin heard a strange knocking sound from inside the coffin, which was placed on the ground and opened. The recent car-wreck victim was alive and gasping for air. She was rushed to the hospital, put on life support, but died a few hours later. Some family members believe a coma may have been improperly diagnosed as a death.

Actor Bill Murray said his behavior, “I did something I thought was funny,” but it “wasn’t taken that way,” on the set of a new film, which led to a film shoot shutdown. The comedian said his actions resulted in a complaint from an unnamed woman. Dave Chappelle says he refuses to let the onstage attack overshadow his comedy shows. Local sweetheart, talented singer, actor, dancer and very first winner of “Models of the RunwayKalyn Hemphill, is expecting twins. Reese Witherspoon has written a children’s book based on her adventures from her childhood, about being a busy kid with a million ideas and lots of energy. The book, Busy Betty will be released in the fall. Dolly Parton stated earlier that she doesn’t feel she earned the right to be nominated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. BUT she has now reconsidered. “I am honored and humbled by the fact that I have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Parton wrote. “Of course, I will accept it gracefully. Thanks to everyone that voted for me and to everyone at the @rockhall. I will continue to work hard and try to live up to the honor.”

A Lubbock man was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which happened in 2021.  The day it happened, the child’s mother called 911 saying she had just found her (29-year-old) boyfriend naked, in bed with her 7-year-old daughter, and that she needed an officer quickly because the man was running away. (I’m taking out the profanity, but the story is one that all parents will understand.) The dispatcher asked, “And he’s your boyfriend?” The mother responded, “He’s supposed to be, but you hurry up or I’m going to kill him. I’m going to ******* kill him. Please hurry, please hurry. I’m fixing to kill him, hurry please, please hurry, please ******* hurry. He’s jumping the fence. He’s ******* jumping the fence. Hurry.” Then 911 heard the woman tell the child to get in the car. The dispatcher asked if the child was ok. The mother said, “Yes, I got home just on time.” She continued following him in her car. There was a loud sound and 911 said, “Did you just hit him?” The woman said, “Yes, he jumped right in front of my car, he jumped right in front of my car, sir.” At this point, I was laughing so hard and rooting for that mom. The child was later able to give specific details about the assault which led to his arrest.

Still hard-working 100-year-old style maven, Iris Apfel, quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed, a woman who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades, is launching an H&M collection of playful, festive, and fun clothing. There is a 2014 documentary about this amazing and talented woman. It’s a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes if that’s any indication of the appeal, and well worth a watch. She has style and knows how to use it, dressing herself each day like she is painting a picture.  Her costume jewelry collection is one of the best.  “A woman is as old as she looks, but a man is never old until he stops looking.” A quote from Iris’s grandfather. So true.

This is just a little FYI for you. As you know, Connie and I have been delivering papers the past few months. It’s not a bad job, but sometimes it takes you away from something you really like, like going home or eating. During our travels, I discovered a little place called Gaspachos El Charro, located in the former French bakery building in Richwood. They have a fruit cup that is fantastic, finished off with a little salt and lime. I’ll miss picking up a cup while I’m delivering, BECAUSE someone else has taken over the route for now… I hope. Have a great weekend and thank you for reading us.

What I Heard This Week! 06-11-2020

What I Heard This Week June 10, 2020

Good news: In the wake of the devastating brush fires where so much wildlife was lost, the Australian Reptile Park in New South Wales, has welcomed its first baby koala of the season, baby girl named Ash. The video is super sweet.

New Zealand has now moved to level one, the lowest of a four-tier alert system for COVID-19. Social distancing is now not required, there are no limits on public gatherings, but it is still encouraged, and their borders will remain closed to foreigners. They have not reported a new case for 7 days.

If I remember correctly, I may have mentioned that the kids and I have eaten a lot of potatoes during the past 3 months. Mostly mashed, with lots of real butter and real cream, then we take the leftovers and make potato cakes, which was a staple in my family when I was growing up. Add an egg, a little flour, some baking powder if you want, some corn and chopped green onions, then place scoops in a greased pan. Flip when brown. Delicious. You can also scrub potatoes (because you’ll want to eat the skins), slice them in half, add a pad of butter with a big slice of fresh onion, some garlic, a little lemon pepper with salt, inside and out, then wrap them in foil and bake. Make sure you place them so the butter doesn’t drip out or it messes up your oven – yes, I know this from experience. You can also place them on your grill before you cook your meats. Easy, and I promise you will love them this way.

When I was a kid, the Crayola box had flesh (later renamed peach) and a brown color in it. The flesh wasn’t used often because it didn’t show up very well on white paper. Last month, Crayola announced they will have a new set of hues representing over 40 global skin tones that “authentically reflects the full spectrum of human complexions,” in both 24 and 32-crayon packs. For the project, Crayola brought in the CEO of cosmetics line MOB Beauty, Victor Casale. He said, “I have spent my life trying to create truly global shade palettes because I know what it’s like to be with a person who has finally found their exact match…Growing up, I remember mixing the pink and dark brown crayons to try and make my shade, so I was thrilled when Crayola asked for my help to create the Colors of the World crayons.” It will be available in July. A different Crayola set, called Multicultural, came out 20-years ago with colors of black, sepia, peach, apricot, white, tan, mahogany, and burnt sienna.

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one. Jane Howard

Flashback to your Childhood: Summer is around the corner and it is nearly time for the cicadas to emerge for their once-in-17-year mating season. Parts of Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia could see as many as 1.5 million cicadas emerging PER ACRE. It is an amazing event, but noisy. The males are trying to find a mate and try to out-noise each other. I watched a YouTube video (Return of the Cicadas) and the sounds that filled the trees brought back childhood memories of playing outside way past dark…until our moms made us come in. Researchers say the breeding cycle is still something of a mystery. Could it be tied to avoiding predators (nah, a bunch still get eaten.) Climate change was listed a possible cause. They are truly, beautiful creatures, and sadly, only live for about 6 weeks.

ActionS is packing boxes for homebound senior citizens throughout the county. Inexpensive cleaning products, small bottles of water, coffee, soup, Boost, oatmeal, canned milk, non-refrigerated juice, canned meats, and non-perishable snacks.  Any non-perishable food item is great. Also, any donations of money can be sent to ActionS, 1524 E. Mulberry, Suite 135, Angleton, Texas. This will be spent on specialty items that are requested.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Singer Janet Jackson is 54. Actor Rami Malek is 39. Actress Tina Fey is 50. Actress Barbara Barrie is 89. Actress Joan Collins is 87.

Found on Facebook: People are still shocked Texas wants to open back up. Let me try to explain it. Five years ago, Blue Bell literally killed us with contaminated ice cream and all we cared about was when we would get our next half-gallon. It’s what we do.

Oops. I spelled ‘Legally Blonde’ wrong, a few weeks back. My son noticed that I left off the ‘e’ on the end of Blonde. Sorry, Reese. Congratulations to Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne, who is retiring. She became an assistant DA 32 years ago, then was elected DA in 1999. Thank you. A community midwife, a train driver and a supermarket worker are British Vogue’s latest cover stars…true beauties inside and out. If by chance, we must evacuate for a future storm (thank you for leaving us alone, Cristobal), don’t forget to put disinfectant, face coverings and gloves in your to-go bag.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard became famous in 2015 when she, along with her then-boyfriend, planned the murder of her mother, after years of medical child abuse. She became the subject of an HBO documentary titled Mommy Dead and Dearest and a HULU miniseries called The Act. Her parole hearing is scheduled for 2024. Gypsy admits to experiencing more freedom in prison than she ever did in real-life with her mother. Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a mental health problem in which a caregiver makes up or causes an illness or injury in a person under their care. Her mother had over 100 doctors that had provided consultations and treatments – organizations like Make-a-Wish Foundation and even Gypsy’s own father, believed that she was a paraplegic battling muscular dystrophy, leukemia, epilepsy, and had a history of mental retardation, operating at the same level as a 7-year-old. Her mother controlled everything. I find it hard to believe that she was given 10 years in prison after that kind of abuse. It’s hard to realize that she never had a normal family day in her life. Was she the victim or the villain? Watch the shows. They are intriguing.

Tuesday Morning was calling my name, so I put on my garden gloves and mask, and ventured out for the first time, ‘for fun’ instead of groceries, bird seed or cat litter. Tuesday Morning stores have been so good to me. My current dishes came from every Tuesday Morning store within a 60-mile radius. I love the chase. I adore the Peacock Alley bedding (the softest cotton ever) and waited for over a year for them to mark down a Coursistan rug that I was in love with. I am very patient when there is a deal involved. Well, on this day, very few people were obeying the direction arrows on the floor and even fewer were wearing masks. I shopped in record time and informed two individuals along the way, that they were going the wrong direction. Hmmm. Sorry, but this isn’t rocket science. The rules are in place and the stickers are on the floor for all of us, not just me. Then on Sunday, I ventured to Costco because I was out of all the BIG things. My last trip there was three months ago, and I needed laundry soap, paper plates for the office, toilet paper, paper towels and wine. Yes, wine. I was relieved when I got there, to see that EVERYONE had on a mask and they were kind and friendly, spraying, then wiping down the carts. Everyone there was behaving like we were having a pandemic and they were still happy. (There were two individuals that were cruising through the store without masks and without baskets, looking like they were daring someone to call them down, but I did not.  My basket was like a puzzle. I could not have fit in one more item.  It was great. Yes, I am good for another 2-3 months but everyone in my office may have to ration their toilet paper use. As Dr. Oz says, “2-3 squares because you’re going to wash your hands afterwards anyway, aren’t you?”

In the mid-20th century, our hygiene changed because of access to clean water. The average life expectancy a hundred years ago was mid-40’s, and today it is 78.6 years as an average, with women (81.1) living about five years longer than men (76.1). Our homes now all have indoor bathrooms with running water to wash our hands. Miryam Z. Wahman has written a book about handwashing called “The Hand Book: Surviving in a Germ-filled World,” where she explains because of world travel, we need to learn how to live in a germ-filled world because it is here to stay, and we need to do a much better job than we have in the past.

Families are about love overcoming emotional torture. Matt Groening

As I trudged through another pile at my office that I had not touched or seen in a while, I came across something that the late Mike Lowrey once said. These words of wisdom were given to me when I helped with his funeral, after his unexpected death on August 31, 2014. It has always spoken to my heart, more so now, than ever. “We are who/what we are. We are gifted for something…and we must identify and pursue this gift…so…start where you are…use what you have…do what you can…Now!  Mike Lowrey

In two local neighborhoods that I am aware of, uninvited strangers have been making the rounds of the houses, knocking on doors, selling webworm/caterpillar cocoon removal and pesticide control. Lucky for us, we all talk. These guys (and girls) gather information from each house that they visit, then casually drop bits of that information in conversation, making the person think that they know more than they rightfully should. They remember your name, your children’s names and then they make use of that information at the next house. They also tell you that “everyone in the neighborhood is doing this.”  Then they get your payment information. Watch out. Scammers everywhere now.

It is a disgrace to grow old through sheer carelessness. Socrates

I have run this before, but it is so funny, so here it is again.
Doug Smith is on his deathbed and knows the end is near.  His nurse, his wife, daughter and 2 sons are with him. He asks for 2 witnesses to be present and a camcorder be in place to record his last wishes, and when all is ready, he begins to speak:
“My son, Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses.”
“My daughter Sybil, you take the apartments over in the east end.”
“My son, Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the City Center.”
“Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the river.”

The nurse and witnesses are blown away as they did not realize his extensive holdings, and as Doug slips away, the nurse says, “Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have accumulated all this property”. The wife rolls her eyes and replies, “The old goat has a paper route.”

Readers: after 21 plus years together, we still think the world of you. Help us… Small businesses need your help. We need your help. Sell something. Give something away. Buy something that someone is selling in this paper today. It will take more than a village to pull some of us out of the great, big, dark hole that we are in. Thank you.

What I Heard This Week! 07-18-2019

What I Heard This Week July 18, 2019

Warren Buffett started giving his fortune away in 2006. $34 BILLION so far. Last week, he disclosed a donation of $3.6 BILLION in Berkshire Hathaway stock to five foundations. Home Depot co-founder, Bernie Marcus, says he’s planning to donate almost his entire $4.5 billion fortune before he dies. Walmart heir Jim Walton gave away $1.2 billion of the retailer’s shares two weeks ago. Talk show host and comedian, Steve Harvey, has committed to covering the college costs for eight in-coming freshmen at his alma mater, Kent State University. The scholarships provide about $23,000 per student and the students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average for the scholarships to be renewed each semester.

Best-selling novelist David Baldacci (who has published 38 books) and his wife, have given $1 million to the historic home in Hartford where Mark Twain and his family once lived from 1874 to 1891. Baldacci says that he’s a huge fan of Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Clemens, and has read everything he ever wrote…the famed author not only made a huge impression on Baldacci through his writing, but how he conducted his life. The Mark Twain House & Museum says that the gift is expected to support new initiatives including writing programs and appearances by authors. What a nice story.

Serena Williams has been chosen to have her own Wheaties box. She says, “I have dreamt of this since I was a young woman and it’s an honor to join the ranks.”

Those of you that read this column know we have beer tastings at my house when my kids are home from college. We use my PawPaw’s little beer glasses and split interesting beers between the three of us. This week I picked up the 25th anniversary Grand Cru from Saint Arnold. Gage was with me at the grocery store and when he saw that it was over $9 a bottle, he told me to put it back. Nope, I put it back into the basket. You only live once. We tried it and let me tell you, it’s rich and dark, with an amazing smell. It’s a blend of three bourbon barrel aged beers: 50% Belgian-Style Quadrupel, 25% Russian Imperial Stout, and 25% English-Style Barleywine.  On the Saint Arnold website, it says, “Our 25th Anniversary Grand Cru is a full bodied, complex, yet balanced barrel aged beer. The Quad presents character of plums and dried cherries, followed by bitter dark chocolate, lavender, and subtle roast bitterness from the Stout. The Barley wine provides a backbone of toffee/caramel sweetness balanced by a soft hop bitter finish. The bourbon is delicately laced throughout, uniting all the components of the blend.” Saint Arnold Brewery just gets better and better. I recommend it, especially when you get to share it with the people that you love most in the world.

Director will be Rob Marshall. Alan Menken will team with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the music. And rumored today,Harry Styles may be in the running as Prince Eric joining Awkwafina as Scuttle & Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.

Some of the best memories are made in flip flops

When I think of Costco, I drift to thoughts of laundry detergent, cheese, toilet paper and olive oil, just to name a few of my long-standing purchases. What’s surprising is that Costco has emerged as an unlikely success story by offering some of the best deals in the clothing industry. North Face, Adidas, Tommy Hilfiger, Eddie Bauer, Calvin Klein and more. Their prices are great, and Costco is now generating more than $7 billion a year in clothing sales. I just wish they had dressing rooms.

Sixteen years ago, Reese Witherspoon was pregnant (with her now 15-year-old son) and was filming Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. There’s good news for fans (me). Sorority girl turned attorney, Elle Woods, is back. Legally Blond 3 is due for release in 2020. My stepfather would be so happy. He loved Reese Witherspoon, calling me once to say I HAD to watch Sweet-Home Alabama.

They’re awfully cute but right now they’re making an absolute mess underneath my bird feeders…the grass won’t grow, and I usually end up either replacing or improving/repairing a bird feeder every few weeks. This last weekend I had to superglue the plastic plate on the raccoon/squirrel-proof feeder that I had just put a new roof on…because they pulled the roof off. I’m talking about raccoons. There was a fascinating article about these masked creatures in Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine last month. Did you know that most animals use either sight, sound or smell to hunt, but raccoons rely on their sense of touch to locate food. Their front paws contain four times more sensory receptors than their back paws. This allows them to differentiate between objects in the dark. They heighten their sense of touch through dousing which looks like food washing, but they’re actually wetting their paws to stimulate the nerve endings. Did NOT know that. A mother raccoon raises her babies by herself, keeping the family unit together long after weaning. Calvin Coolidge had a raccoon that was planned for Thanksgiving dinner (yum) but decided to adopt her instead. Rebecca became part of the family, wore an engraved collar, took part in the annual Easter egg roll and even accompanied the president on walks on the White House grounds. Coolidge also had a bobcat, a goose, a donkey, two lion cubs, an antelope and a wallaby as pets. Ok. You don’t have to read the Texas Parks & Wildlife article. I’ve told you almost everything that I read. Think of the time I have saved you.

“Children have this amazing way of becoming exactly who we tell them they are. If we tell them they are strong, they become strong. If we tell them they are kind, they become kind. If we tell them they are capable, they become capable. Speak life into your kids, so they will have what it takes to tackle their own life one day”.Amy Weatherly

You know the Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes.  If you like them, you’re in luck.  Little Debbie launched a Christmas in July edition of the tree cakes at Walmart.

American lawyer, Jaime Alvarez (46), wanted the ultimate selfie souvenir from “the running of the bulls” in Spain, but now instead has the memory of the bull’s horn when it went deep into his neck and fractured part of his cheekbone. He said, “The joy and the excitement of being in the bullring quickly turned into a scare, into real fear for my life”. Really.

English singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and actor Ed Sherran, loves ketchup so much that he teamed with Heinz on National Ketchup Day (June 5) to release Tomato EdChup, which is the regular variety of ketchup with a limited-edition label.(The Heinz Ketchup logo is tattooed on his bicep.)

Now Blue Bell has copycat lickers. A man (age 36, name not important, but age should be a factor) found an ice cream container, peeled back the lid, took two licks, stuck his finger into the ice cream then returned the container to the store shelf. He then posted the video on Facebook so he could be famous. Isn’t that the reason that people post stuff like this? The difference here is that he eventually went back and paid for the tub of ice cream. Hmmm. He was still charged with criminal mischief and unlawful posting of criminal activity. The young girl that started these crazy-ice-cream-licking-videos was not charged with an adult crime and name has not been released because she is under 17. Too bad.

We cannot waste time. We can only waste ourselves.” George M. Adams

Donald Trump’s most recent proposed tariff on Chinese imports could result in a Bible shortage because approximately 150 million bibles are printed in China each year. The Bible is the top-selling book in the US.

The important thing is not how many years in your life but how much life in your years.” Edward Stieglitz

An appeals court in Washington state has ordered a man to pay $40,000 to a piano teacher for emotional distress. The man would park his diesel truck next to the piano teacher’s home and remotely race the engine to drown out the sound of her lessons, setting off the vehicle’s alarm when students arrived for their lessons. Shame, shame, shame.

The Busy Bee convenience store and gas station in downtown LJ decided (after making some well-deserved renovations) that they would eliminate The Source Weekly as one of our over 600 locations for picking up a copy of the paper. We tried to explain to them that customers will ‘stop and shop’ when they get a new copy each week, but they weren’t convinced. So, to those that miss your paper pick-up location, remember there are 650 papers waiting for you at H.E.B. each week. Stands at each entrance.

On the 4th of July weekend, Gage (almost 23), Anne-Elisabeth (almost 20), and I (age not disclosed) went to see Toy Story 4. It doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s a great movie. Woody and the gang enjoy a road trip with Bonnie and new toy, Forky, where they meet long-lost friend, Bo-Peep. FYI. It’s still showing.

Have a great week and thanks for reading this…Lisa

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
