What I Heard This Week 08-25-2022

What I Heard This Week August 24, 2022

Only 10% of people are left-handed. The uniqueness is believed to be determined from the mother’s womb, where testosterone levels play a vital role. Some advantages of being left-handed are: 1. Better multitasking skills because both sides of the brain are used to adjust in a right-handed world. 2. Higher Prodigies’ Percentage, meaning they are smarter, there again because they use both sides of their brains, which makes them smarter. 3. Higher Vision Adjustability Underwater. I don’t know how that helps except maybe as their eyes adjust, they can see the sharks coming faster than their fellow swimmers. 4. Earn more. Research has proven that most left-handed males who have enrolled in college earn about 13% more than their right-hand friends. 5. Better in sports because of the added benefit of people not accustomed to their different ways/techniques of playing. 6. Better at video games and can type faster. 7. Enhanced memory. Hmmm. You can definitely tell that I’m right-handed. 8. Lefties are much better in driving school despite the fact that every car design is for right-handers. 9. They recover faster from strokes because their non-dominant hand is better than their right-handed friends. Sounds like we need to do brain exercises where we use our left hand all day long no matter how bad our writing looks (and it does look bad.) What were we talking about?

Some of the world’s super-rich are funding a massive treasure hunt (helicopters and transmitters) on the west coast of Greenland since the ice is melting at a very rapid rate, exposing ground that has been concealed under the ice for as long as millennia (1000 years) and could now serve as a site for mineral exploration… precious metals copper, gold, rare-earth elements, and zinc, necessary for electric cars.

Viola Davis is set to play a warped villain in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the Hunger Games prequel. She will star as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, Head Gamemaker of the 10th Annual Hunger Games. It will be based on Suzanne Collins’ 2020 novel and will arrive in theaters November 17, 2023. I loved reading those books and then watching the movies with my kids. That was the rule with my kids… read the book, then we went to opening night at the movie theater, standing in line for hours with the other fans. It was fun. For those that enjoyed the books or movies, the official synopsis reads, “Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor.”

Starbucks has a replacement in Russia – it’s called Stars Coffee and the logo looks just like Starbucks. Hmmm.  In place of the Starbucks mermaid, Stars Coffee’s logo is using a woman wearing a traditional Russian headdress called a kokoshnik. Starbucks closed 130 stores following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, then pulled out completely in May, selling all 130 Starbucks to a group of three that includes a Russian rapper known as Timati. Russia’s rebranded McDonald’s, which is running out of Coke (because Coca-Cola also left the country) and can’t use the words Happy Meal, is trademarking TochkaCola and Kids Combo as replacements. Nine miles off the coast of Italy, a video showed a 131-foot superyacht sinking in the Mediterranean Sea. All passengers and crew members were saved. There have always been giant dinosaur prints (dating back just 113 million years) in the riverbed of the Paluxy River at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas. When I lived there, we had great parties on those riverbanks. So many tracks that have normally been hidden under water and mud, are now exposed in the new drought-dry riverbank. Really good ones. What a great week-end trip to take your children or grandchildren. The Dallas Cowboys became the first NFL franchise to receive a valuation of $8 billion.

Poor Bed Bath & Beyond. Shares sank 16% on reports that some suppliers have stopped shipping products because of late payments, just days after one of its largest shareholders dumped his entire stake. My daughter and I shopped there for college because her dad had given her a gift certificate. We got some great deals – even better than advertised when we got to the register. Isn’t it interesting how some super successful businesses have made a complete turnaround in the past five years. Don’t you ever wonder how the small family-owned businesses are making it when even the BIG stores are struggling right now? The next time you get ready to order a gift on Amazon (yes, I know you order from Amazon), why don’t you try Grapevine Gifts or Forever Treasures in LJ, or how about Lady Bug and Carta Valley in WC. I dare you to tell me that you can’t find something awesome when you SHOP LOCAL and help these small businesses stay in business. It’s up to you. Please read on.

Amazon’s acquisition of businesses continues. On August 5th, the company announced they will purchase (for $1.7 billion) iRobot, the manufacturer of Roomba, the popular robotic vacuum cleaner that wanders around my house sucking up dirt and scaring the cats and dog. Hmmm. Now why does Jeff Bezos need to own Roomba. Was he tired of walking on dirty floors. Nah. Now Amazon has a detailed map of everyone’s home that owns a Roomba. I have one and I love it! His name is Cousin Greg and I adore him. Millions of homes have them. But it’s a company built on mapping the inside of people’s homes. Now if you don’t think that’s a little creepy…  data-privacy experts say it is the most dangerous, threatening acquisition in the company’s history. Oh, and by the way, Amazon also owns my doorway at my home because I have a Ring doorbell, too. Do you have Alexa? Yep, Amazon owns her, too.

The historic Battleship Texas will sail from its La Porte home to the Gulf Copper Shipyard in Galveston for necessary repairs on August 31. The Battleship Texas Foundation is working on a plan so visitors can still see the ship while it is dry-docked at pier 21. Pumps were installed that will be used during towing to limit the ship’s water intake from leaks, and in May crews removed about 23,000 cubic yards of mud from the stern around the ship to clear a path for towing into the Houston Ship Channel. There is not a permanent home planned after the repairs, but they know it won’t be returned to LaPorte where it called home since 1948.

The first news article said a giant slide in Detroit closed the same day it opened, after children were getting a little too much air-time and bounce as they came down the slide. The news report the next day, said the children were catapulted into the air while attempting to slide down. The video showed some very happy, laughing children that when asked if they wanted to go again, said NO. The word catapulted seems so much different than too much air-time.

Denial must be my middle name, and I seem to use it often when I start thinking about storm season. Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, but historically, most storms occur between August and October when the Atlantic Ocean is at its warmest, therefore creating the most perfect conditions. There are two systems that forecasters are watching this week in the Atlantic, but if they do nothing, then this could be just the third August since 1961, and the first August since 1997, without a named storm. Dry air, Saharan dust and wind shear are the main reasons no named storms have developed recently, and only three, Alex, Bonnie and Colin, have developed so far this season.

I cannot continue to be a part of a political party that is okay with a violent attempt to overturn a free and fair election and continues to peddle claims that the 2020 election was stolen.” Colorado State Senator Kevin Priola announcing he is leaving the Republican Party and becoming a Democrat.

Somehow, through some crazy sort of thought process (yes, sometimes I scare myself), I Googled Leon Russell and listened to his, A Song for You. It’s so beautiful, slow, grieving pleas for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover. The words are everything you always wanted to hear from the person that has pained you or ‘done you wrong’ in a relationship, but you didn’t get. I guess I was surprised to find out that the song has been covered by more than 200 artists including Andy Williams, The Carpenters, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Ray Charles & Willie Nelson & Leon Russell together, Herbie Hancock & Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and even Amy Winehouse, a soulful version that was released after her death. If you get a chance, pull it up on YouTube. Sometimes we forget that the most magical music was recorded in the 1970’s.

Ford is cutting 3,000 jobs as it prepares to shift from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. Ethan, a little 1-1/2-year-old boy was chasing and playing with drifting bubbles when he found a missing 82-year-old woman with early-stage Alzheimer’s. He told his momma, “Feet,” after spotting the woman in the woods nearby. His mom looked but couldn’t see anything until she crouched down to Ethan’s level, and it was then that she saw a pair of feet poking out from the overgrown trees. Nina Lipscomb had been missing for 4-days. Dr. Fauci is retiring! I can’t wait to see what wonderful things he does in this new chapter of his life. Bet it’s fabulous. In celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 96th birthday, Mattel released the limited-edition Platinum Jubilee Doll (Barbie), which sold out in a day. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park announced the birth of a southern white rhino. His first-time mother is Livia, and he was conceived through natural breeding. He really is so ugly, he’s cute.

The mailman said, “My doctor asked me if I had any symptoms of Mailman’s Disease. I told him, no, I’m just a carrier.”

Scientists have discovered that dogs cry tears of joy when reunited with their owners. Victoria’s has a new first male celebrity brand ambassador. His name is Darren Barnet, and he will promote Pink’s Gender Free collection. The Biden administration has proposed to standardize about 500,000 electric vehicle chargers across the US so they can work with any electric vehicle, similar to the way a gas pump works with any car or truck.  On my way to work today, I noticed that Oyster Creek is already rising, and it looks like we have quite a few days of rain ahead of us, so be sure to read a good book or cook a great meal. Remember life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Have a great week.

What I Heard This Week 01-27-2022

What I Heard This Week January 26, 2022

Recently, while my kids were home on break, I served as the innkeeper at my own bed & breakfast (lunch & dinner) establishment.  It was so nice to have them ‘in and out’ as they made room for me in their ever so busy lives. It’s so different to have them back at home now, me trying to remember to give them their own space and allowing for all our crazy schedules. I did hear, “There’s nothing in the refrigerator to eat.” But when I checked, there wasn’t a square inch left to put in even one more slice of cheese and still get the door closed. At that point, there was a whole ham, containers of homemade Italian Wedding soup, and three casserole dishes of lasagna waiting for them. As a woman that loves to cook, it was a dream come true to accommodate them. They were just never there at the same time. What I don’t enjoy doing is vacuuming. Together, they bought me a Roomba Robot vacuum cleaner for Christmas that we named Cousin Greg (from HBO’s Succession). It is actually the happiest thing to ever happen to me involving home appliances. Cousin Greg just wakes up and starts vacuuming every single morning at 8:45. I clean him out before I start to the office, and he finishes up the floors before I get home at night. It couldn’t be any nicer. Well, except when he gets stuck under the middle of the king size bed. Thank you to my kids.

The cast and crew of Harry Potter reunited to celebrate the 20th-anniversary release of their first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, for an HBO Max special. Secrets were exposed. Emma Watson almost quit the series halfway through. Daniel Radcliffe had a crush on Helena Bonham Carter. Julie Walters who played Molly Weasley was absent. Most likely because she has semiretired from acting since successful treatment of stage three bowel cancer. It was fun to see them as adult real people.

A Boston hospital is the latest to deny an organ transplant to a patient who has refused to be vaccinated against Covid. “Post any transplant – kidney, heart, whatever – your immune system is shut off,” said Arthur Caplan, the head of medical ethics at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine. The flu could kill you, a cold could kill you, COVID could kill you. The organs are scarce. We’re not going to distribute them to someone who has a very poor chance of living, when others who are vaccinated have a much better chance post-surgery of surviving.

With just 24-hours’ notice, Adele canceled a series of shows at Caesars Palace following a disagreement over a set design of an onstage pool that was intended to fill with water as she was lifted up on a crane-type mechanism, creating the illusion she was floating on water. Rumor has it that some top tickets sold for as much as $30,000 each, and people were flying in from all over the world. Yikes.

On the Ohio Turnpike, a snowplow was running one side of the turnpike clearing the road, all the while blowing massive amounts of snow, road dirt, slush, and debris out of the snowplow into a perfect rainbow shaped arch that sprayed all three lanes of vehicles on the other side. It was quite pretty but over 40 unsuspecting vehicles were blinded with damage of broken windshields and destruction to their cars, as they swerved, hitting other cars and guardrails, and sending at least 12 people to the hospital. The snowplow operator was on administrative leave after mandatory alcohol and drug testing.

A woman moving with her family from Colorado to New York, took an Apple AirTag that her son had been wearing to school, and dropped into a box of toys that were about to be loaded up with their other furniture and goods on the moving truck. The delivery date passed with no sign of their personal possessions arriving, so she checked the location and called the moving company driver who lied to her about the whereabouts of her belongings. Finally, the driver admitted that he had stopped to see his girlfriend and if he hustled, he could be in her driveway the next day. Good idea! So, AirTags can be used for evil (stealing cars) and good (finding your stuff). They’re $29 or 4 for $99. I have one on my keyring.

The four-legged Hollywood star that played Seabiscuit in the 2003 movie has died at 24. His horse-name was Popcorn Deelites aka Pop’s, and he had retired to Old Friends Thoroughbred Farms in 2005. He had a modest racing career before he became a movie star.

Fred Parris died at 85. He was the lead singer for the doo-wop group the Five Satins, writing their hit song, In the Still of the Night, which he wrote while he was serving on night guard duty in the army, then recording it when he was home on leave. I think the theatre is as essential to civilization as safe, pure water. Vanessa Redgrave

An international flight was diverted after two unruly Israeli passengers decided to move to empty seats in business class after the plane had departed for Tel Aviv from New York. They then refused to prove that they had tickets in business class, so approximately 90 minutes into the flight the pilot turned the plane around and took them back to NY, where police were waiting to arrest them. Go United! On a Delta flight from Dublin to New York, a man refused to wear a mask, got up to complain about the food, then dropped his pants and mooned the attendant and the passengers. He put his own cap on the pilot’s head and refused to sit down during the final approach to JFK. Authorities took him into custody when the plane landed. Consequences. We need more of them.

Integrity is so perishable in the summer months of success. Vanessa Redgrave.

In winter, fall and spring… plus occasionally in the summertime, I love making soup. It’s relaxing to cut and chop, taste, add a dash of this and that, until it’s just perfect. Like painting a picture except you get to eat it when you’re finished. Connie brought the Olive Garden Zuppa Toscana copycat Soup one day for a birthday luncheon, and it is just the best. We will be forever indebted to her for showing us this lovely dish. I went to the grocery store last night, picked up all the ingredients, then made it when I got home. Today happens to be Tina’s non-birthday that she decided not to celebrate. If you don’t celebrate it, it really doesn’t really count. The ingredients in this soup are pretty basic… Italian sausage, onion, potatoes, and kale. We all agree that you don’t eat it because you’re hungry, you eat it because it becomes addictive when you stir all those flavors together. Hope you enjoy. 6 servings.

1.5 pounds spicy Italian ground sausage (I used mild but added more Italian seasoning) 6 tablespoons butter
one white onion diced
1.5 tablespoon minced garlic
9 cups chicken broth
3 cups water (I used all chicken broth)
6 or 7 yellow potatoes cut into 1-inch pieces
4+ teaspoons salt or to taste (this depends on whether you used unsalted broth or not)
1.5 teaspoon black pepper (I added a little red pepper flakes when I put the potatoes in)
3 cups heavy cream
6 cups chopped kale (I like a heavy kale but Connie uses spinach)
Chopped bacon bits and grated parmesan cheese for topping optional

Directions: In a large pot brown sausage 5-6 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer sausage to a plate and set aside. In the same pot, add butter, cook onions until translucent. Add garlic and cook for another minute or two, or until the garlic makes your house smell like Heaven. Add chicken broth, water, potatoes, salt, and pepper and slow boil until potatoes are tender. Turn off the heat, stir in kale, and heavy cream. Add sausage.  Salt and pepper to taste if needed. Serve garnished with grated parmesan cheese and bacon bits. When I prepared it last night, I made tiny little meat balls from the pork, sprinkled more Italian seasoning over those, then roasted and browned them in the oven. I also added more kale and put the chopped bacon straight into the soup. I think you’re going to like it.

Prince Andrew has been stripped of all his military titles and royal patronages because he will need to defend himself of sexual-assault allegations as a private citizen instead of a royal, which also means he may also lose his 24-hour police security and bodyguards. He became colonel-in-chief of the Grenadier Guards in 2017 after inheriting the position that his father, the Duke of Edinburgh held for 42 years before he retired. There are reports that Kate Middleton could replace Prince Andrew and make royal history as the second female appointed to this position in its 366-year history.

A Crockett woman standing in line at the self-checkout at Walmart, offered another woman $500,000 to buy her baby. That’s a no-no. Now, I believe in full disclosure. Anything less is a lie. I was shopping at Walmart this past weekend and saw the most beautiful baby in a woman’s basket, so I asked the mom what aisle I could find “one of those” on?  Please let it be known that I never offered her money, I just needed directions to the correct aisle. 😊 Thank you so much for reading us. If you are still looking for a copy of The Source Weekly since Buc-ee’s has decided not to carry any newsprint, please look on page 5. Most, but not all of our many locations are listed. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.

What I Heard This Week! 06-20-2019

What I Heard This Week June 20, 2019

Former President George H.W. Bush (41) was a prolific letter-writer, considered by some to be the “World’s Best Letter Writer.” Over the years, he wrote several hundred letters a month marking military retirements, approximately 149,700 congratulatory letters to Eagle Scouts, roughly 43,500 letters for births, weddings, birthday and anniversaries along with countless letters sent to family, friends and others that he met.  Wow. The U.S. Postal Service has now issued a postage stamp to honor him. His wife, Barbara, chose the portrait before she died. The first day of issue was what would have been his 95th birthday. What a great birthday gift.

Canada joined a growing global movement with a plan to ban single-use plastics. Trudeau said he plans to “reduce pollution, create 42,000 jobs and protect the environment” with this move. Some retailers in Canada have become creative in encouraging shoppers to bring their own bags. Not only will they charge you for your bag, but written on the front of the bags will be embarrassing logos like “Into the Weird Adult Video Emporium,” or “Dr. Toews Wart Ointment Wholesale” or “The Colon Care Co-Op.” In 2015, the British Government introduced a charge for most plastic bags when it was announced that it could take 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose.

In Alabama, a bill has been signed that will require people convicted of certain sex offenses after September 1st, to undergo chemical castration (testosterone-suppressing drugs) as a condition of parole. Offenders can choose at any time to stop getting the medication and return to prison to serve the remainder of their term. Hmmm. I wonder if this will make a difference. I would bet if they announced plans to surgically castrate the individual in these same situations, it might actually make a difference as to whether these people ever even become perpetrators.

The California National Guard has announced the appointment of Brig. General Laura Yeager who will take command of the 40th Infantry Division on June 29th and will be the first woman to lead a U.S. Army infantry division.

A former minister at First Baptist Church in Houston was sentenced to 10 years in prison after stealing at least $823,937 over a 6-year period. The 40-year-old minister used the money for overseas trips, groceries and a doctorate degree in divinity from a bible church. Hmmm.

If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere. – Vincent Van Gogh

A study announced by the Houston-Galveston Area Council Clean Rivers Program, states that fecal bacteria (poop) levels in Chocolate Bayou need to be reduced to make it safe for recreational use and to provide a healthy ecosystem for those that rely on it for habitat. Hmmm. Chocolate Bayou runs through Houston, Fort Bend county and central Brazoria county in a 174-square mile watershed.  It empties into Chocolate Bay to the east of the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. I’m sure that the fish enjoy this.

Quote:When your founder doesn’t have one, it kinda says a lot of what people can do without a college education.” Apple CEO discussing the fact that about half of the company’s 2018 hires did not have a four-year college degree.

Quote:Deniers of climate change, I want them to go to the Antarctic where the sea ice is melting faster than ever before and dump them in the middle of it.” Jane Goodall, 85-year-old conservationist challenging people to use their ability to think big to come up with a bold plan to conserve the earth’s limited resources and species – and fast.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS: Actor Harvey Keitel is 80. Taxi Driver. Late Show host Stephen Colbert is 55. Actor Robert Pattinson is 33. He IS the next Batman with 42 percent of those in the 18-29 age bracket in favor of the casting.  International Motorsports Hall of Fame Jackie Stewart is 80. The “Flying Scot.” Actor Roscoe Orman is 75. Since 1974, he’s been Gordon Robinson on Sesame Street.

Rock musician Frank Beard is 70. ZZ Top. Songwriter Richard M. Sherman is 91. Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Parent Trap, The Aristocats, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Happiest Millionaire and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Magician Siegfried is 80. Siegfried & Roy. Singer Dennis Locorriere is 70. Dr. Hook. Actresses Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen are 33.

Pop artist Peter Max was married to Mary Max in 1997. Mary (52) was found dead last week in a suspected suicide. For the past several years, she has been involved in disputes with her stepson over her husband’s art, wealth and legacy. Peter Max (81) lives with dementia. There are even allegations that art signed by Peter Max in recent years was actually a team of artists – art that was sold through a cruise line and in galleries around the country, raking in millions of dollars. I would hate to be THAT art collector that finds he has a fake Peter Max.

Gloria Vanderbilt “poor little rich girl” died. The first thing I thought of was my jeans – there’s not a woman out there, over the age of 50, that hasn’t turned around in front of a mirror wearing her white swan labeled jeans and think to herself. “Dang, these jeans sure make my rear-end look good.”

I would rather have 30 minutes of ‘wonderful’ than a lifetime of nothing special.” Julia Roberts

I called my ‘almost’ 84-year-old Mom to check on her, so she was telling me all about her boyfriend having to help her get up off the ground so she wouldn’t fall, after she had planted some flowers. During this conversation, a long-ago memory flooded into my little brain. “Weebles Wobble but They Don’t’ Fall Down.” My little brother played with tiny egg-shaped, bottom-heavy toys. I told Mom what I was thinking, but she couldn’t remember the toys. I googled it. Weebles are now 48 years old. It’s official. I’m old. But, not so old that I couldn’t pull a Weebles memory from my old harddrive. 😊

Maine has become the 8th state to allow terminally ill people to end their lives with prescribed medication.

Last week my daughter and I wanted to sit outside to eat while the humidity was still low, so we headed over to Wursthaus after the flood zone meeting. Wednesday evening wasn’t very busy, and the weather was beyond perfect. While we sat there, I remembered seeing a gift card the last time I cleaned out my purse, so I searched and sure enough, there it was. ‘Happy Birthday to Lisa, from Tom.’ As you may recall, Tom Aucoin died a few months ago after being a part our Source Weekly family for over 19 years. So, Tom…we had a super nice waitress, a delicious meal and a lovely evening, along with a toast to YOU. We miss you.

According to Earth Day Network: Wildlife populations living on land have fallen by 40% since 1970.

Starbucks will introduce a first-of-its-kind trial of reusable cups in London’s Gatwick airport. If just 250 customers a day opt for a reusable cup, more than 7,000 cups will be saved in the month-long trial.

We are used to cleaning the outside house, but the most important house to clean is yourself – your own house – which we never do.”  Marina Abramovic

Twenty-five years ago, O.J. Simpson went from Hall of Fame football hero to murder suspect the night that his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were stabbed to death.  Simpson was acquitted of the crime in what was called “The Trial of the Century.” Last week, Simpson was interviewed and said he is happy and healthy, lives in Las Vegas, and plays golf nearly every day. Hmmm. This morning on the news, they said  he now has launched a Twitter account and his posts have been quite controversial. Knife emojis and threatening messages. According to the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Simpson is still on parole and the Division of Parole and Probation “takes threats or acts of violence against public safety very seriously and is looking into the alleged complaints.”  Grow up.

“It’s unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don’t even give themselves a chance to see what they’ll look like as older persons. I want to have some idea of what I’ll look like before I start cleaning the slates.” Julia Roberts

For the second time in recent weeks, I have found a receipt left at the drive-thru ATM at FSB. Yikes. I think that’s a bad idea, but I decided that I should look it up and know for sure. Well, it’s not just bad, it’s super bad. Your receipt can include the last four digits of your account number and your account balance.  Adam Levin, author of Swiped: How to Protect Yourself in a World Full of Scammers, Phishers and Identity Thieves, describes it as “dropping breadcrumbs that can lead back to you. Thieves are experts at piecing together seemingly small bits of info. Why let them know an account ending in these four digits has $10,000 in it?”  ($10,000. Hmmm. Immediately, that took me away from any life-threatening thoughts about my own account, ha-ha) So, remember to take your receipt with you when you leave your bank, rip it up, cross-shred it and always make sure you use two trash receptacles when you throw away items like this.

You don’t have to be self-sufficient in everything. Just be self-sufficient in something…

New Jersey became the first state to mandate that hotels provide their room cleaning people with wearable panic buttons to help protect workers from sexual harassment and other dangers.

Did you know if you Google, “Chernobyl Tours,” TripAdvisor has ten tours listed on their site from $88 to $797? Yikes. After a fire, explosion and reactor meltdown destroyed the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in June 1986, more than 100,000 people were permanently evacuated. It killed 50 people and another 4,000 deaths have since been linked to radiation exposure from the site. Radioactive fallout from the plant spread across Europe because the explosion released radioactivity high into the atmosphere where it was spread by the wind. Is it safe now? I guess it just depends on your definition of safe. (It is still a question whether humans cause more environmental damage than a nuclear disaster.) China is now planning to build a huge solar park inside the Chernobyl nuclear exclusion zone which would be a source of clean, renewable energy. One-gigawatt which would light 100-million LED bulbs.

We should get a Roomba for our Roomba. I feel bad for it because it works tirelessly, and at night I can hear it cleaning, and I just feel bad for it.”  Ryan Gosling

  • What I Heard This Week 10-26-2023

    by on October 25, 2023 - 0 Comments

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
