What I Heard This Week! 05-09-2019

What I Heard This Week May 9, 2019

A 33-year-old Pennsylvania man had been staying with his mother for a brief time when she decided that it was time for him to ‘re-locate.’ He didn’t care for that very much so before he left, he removed his grandparent’s ashes that were kept in a box in his mother’s bedroom and flushed them down the toilet. I’m speechless and have more of an understanding of why his mother kicked him out.

Mothers of teenagers know why animals eat their young.”  unknown

The owners of a NJ amusement park are saying that the Gale Force coaster ride at Playland’s Castaway Cove is still safe after a pair of water-filled test dummies fell from the ride during a routine safety check, hit a hotel next door damaging the building’s shingles and some wood siding. Park officials said that the dummies had undetected leaks that made them lose their mass and shape, causing them to fall. Hmmm.

Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, announced that his divorce settlement will leave him with 75 percent of their joint Amazon stock. His wife, MacKenzie, will be awarded 4 percent of the company, worth about $36 billion, which will make her one of the wealthiest women in the world.

You know the rock and stucco columns you pass when you go into a storefront that look like they’re holding up the front of the building? Well, one burglar at a CVS store in Wharton actually barricaded himself, along with three of his best burglar friends, in the false ceiling of the store, then dropped down into one of those columns and couldn’t get out. I’m laughing. The want-a-be thieves damaged the security gate to the pharmacy, broke glass, made a mess of items in the store and damaged an ATM. And did I mention…got caught. I’m still laughing.

The royal baby name is officially Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Harrison is a patronymic surname meaning ‘son of Harry.’ But, Archie? It seems that Archie is a derivative or short form of Archibald or Arthur. First thing I thought of was Jughead. Shame on me.

The 2019 Met Gala’s theme for this year was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Hmmm. What does that mean? Camp. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming spring exhibition, “Notes on Camp will examine how the elements of irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration are expressed in fashion.” Hmmm. I still don’t know what it means. The Met Gala was chaired by Gucci, Anna Wintour, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga and Serena Williams who said, “this year’s benefit gave attendees a chance to break free from the bland, predictable gowns we usually see on the red carpet.” But even the red carpet wasn’t red this year, it was pink. In other words, if it’s normal, it’s not camp. But according to Wikipedia, “camp is an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value.”  I’m sure you have seen some of the outfits from the event. Lady Gaga started out with a hot pink parachute dress and three outfits later, ended up in black underwear and boots. Cardi B wore what looked like a red bedspreadKaty Perry wore a crystal chandelier. Jared Leto was holding a wax replica of his own head. Tracee Ellis Ross had a giant picture frame attached to her front.Lily Collins looked like Priscilla Presley in 1965. Kacey Musgraves had a purse that looked like a pink blow-dryer. Diane von Furstenberg was the Statue of Liberty. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were considered some of the worst-dressed…hers was a boob-popping, flesh-colored sheer that was really ugly; she said took 8 months to make and her hair looked sopping wet. Kanye wore a tracksuit. It looked like everyone was having a great time and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. Did we have fun today and does your underwear match your outfit?

“My mother’s menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.”Buddy Hackett

Blue Bell’s new Cookie Cake flavor is chocolate-chip cookie cake pieces and swirls of chocolate and vanilla icing. Or how about Raspberry Fudge Brownie with almond-flavored ice cream mixed with raspberry sauce and just the right amount of fudge brownie chunks and dark-chocolate flakes. Sigh. More flavors are expected to be released soon.

A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.”Tenneva Jordan

Toy Story 4 will be released on June 21. Bonnie (Andy’s little sister) adds a new arts-and-craft toy, a spork named Forky, who joins Sheriff Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang on a new road trip adventure. Woody has some challenging decisions to make and Bo Peep has come back into the picture with a new attitude. I just love these movies. The average Rotten Tomatoes score for this series is 99 percent. Big name voices are Christina Hendricks, Patricia Arquette, Keanu Reeves, and Tom Hanks.

More than 370 former federal prosecutors who worked in Republican and Democratic administrations have signed on to a statement asserting special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s findings would have produced obstruction charges against President Trump, if not for the office he held.

Mothers are fonder than fathers of their children because they are more certain they are their own.  Aristotle

In Arizona, a woman walked under a tree during 45-mph heavy winds, a bee hive fell from the tree and landed on her head. Unfortunately, she was stung 20-30 times, but was able to have her husband drive her to the hospital for evaluation.

In Houston, a pastor and his wife feared for their safety, shot and killed a man who was breaking into their home. They then called authorities, went outside, placed their guns on the ground and waited for officers to arrive.

The George and Barbara Bush Foundation, home of the late president’s library and museum at A&M University, wants to become the permanent home of the Air Force One plane that once transported Bush around the world. There will be two Boeing VC-25A planes that will be retired in 2025 and the museum has 90-acres available for the project. An artist’s rendering shows a building made largely of glass exhibiting the plane. It should be very pretty.

A kangaroo named Harry escaped from a Texas ranch near Wimberly. After being on the run for several days after his escape, he was spotted eating flowers and grass. His owners were able to capture him by using a tranquilizer dart. Harry now thinks it was just a crazy dream.

A movie theater in Tennessee that is across the street from a church and an elementary school, has changed the name of the ‘Hell Boy’ movie to ’Heck boy’ because the theater avoids putting up words on their sign that might be seen as profanity. The manager says, “We try to be respectful to everyone, including the hundreds of children who pass by every day.”

You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around – and why his parents will always wave back.”William D. Tammeus

It has been such a nice spring. Rain helped nurture wildflowers, which made a beautiful drive for me towards the Hill Country. The weather has been a little cooler which is unusual for us since spring is normally just 24-hours, so it feels nice to throw on a little sweater each morning as I leave the house to start my day. Have you ever seen prettier strawberries? They’re beautiful and just in time for Mother’s Day. Asparagus. I have had roasted asparagus almost every evening for the past month.  I like the big fat ones with a little olive oil and lemon pepper. One of our very kind customers (thank-you, Hayman) left us an overflowing box of grapefruit, so I squeezed fresh grapefruit juice. Twice. My daughter, home from college, informed me that fresh grapefruit juice should be a staple in everyone’s refrigerator, especially ours. My poppies have been just gorgeous, and amaryllis are still blooming red, apple blossom and white. Little green lizards are hanging around and I’ve seen three green tree frogs this week. The Farmer’s Markets in Downtown LJ and Peach St. Angleton is Saturday. No rain please.

Weekend Safety Brief: Don’t add to the population. Don’t subtract from the population. Stay out of the hospital, the newspaper and jail. If you do end up in jail, establish dominance quickly. (My son sent this.)

Happy Mother’s Day to all hard-working moms out there. Being a mom is the best thing ever and the hardest job I’ve ever had. I’m now getting to see my two kiddos grow into quite fine young adults. Such great payoff. Lisa

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
