What I Heard This Week 03-31-2022

What I Heard This Week March 30, 2022

Billionaire philanthropist, MacKenzie Scott, has donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity, a global organization that partners with communities to build or improve housing. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $2.7 billion last year (2021) to 286 groups supporting a variety of causes. In July 2020, she donated more than $1.7 billion to diverse organizations including historically Black colleges and universities. Brazosport College received one of her gifts. Later in 2020, Scott announced she donated an additional $4.2 billion to 384 organizations including food banks, emergency relief funds, and debt relief. What a woman.

“Good Food. Good Life.” Russia is being punished by taking away their chocolate. Facing growing pressure from critics to exit Russia, Swiss food company Nestle is suspending sales of Kit Kat bars, Nespresso pods, and San Pellegrino bottled water in Russia, but will continue to sell essential items like infant food and medical nutrition. Yogurt maker Danone and Pepsi said that they will suspend some business but will continue to sell essential products like milk and baby formula in Russia. Food companies are having a tough time as they weigh access to food as a basic human right, but respond to pressure from critics who say pulling out completely is necessary for sanctions against the Russian economy to succeed. It could have a real impact on how their brands are now perceived, and their bottom lines. Staying in that country and paying taxes to the budget of a terrorist country is perceived as killing defenseless children & mothers in other countries. Hmmm. It is up to us.

Humans are so reliant on technology now. Laptops, computers, smart phones. Some of us… hmmm, I wonder who they’re talking about… have not developed particularly good back-up habits to ensure that information and personal data, pictures, and videos, are secure and safe. When my son was young, I lost years of pictures when I handed him one of my old phones, and he immediately wiped it clean. Could you call any of your family if your phone died? In 1998, before the release of Toy Story 2, someone entered a command on the drives where Pixar stores the film’s files, deleting 90% of the film. Broken hard drives, hacked computers, erratic phones, we have all had it happen at least once. March 31st is National World Backup Day. In 1956, an IBM engineer came up with the idea of the external hard drive and in the 1960’s a computer scientist is believed to have invented cloud storage.

Most all of our personal information is already out there on the web, so our job is to prevent criminals from using it for their own benefit. And they will, it is just a matter of time. One step you can take is to change your passwords often. Set aside a couple of hours at least once a year, to change all your passwords on your accounts… do it more often for critical accounts like banks or health care providers. Yes, then do it again in 6 months. If you have accounts like retailers and restaurants that make you set up an account in order to purchase from them, and they now email you constantly, then close them out. Remember to upgrade the quality of your password, and never, never, never use the same password twice. One article said that if the world stopped reusing passwords for multiple sites, we would cut cybercrime in half overnight. Don’t just change one letter or number. That makes it way too easy for the bad guys. The longer and more random the password, the more power is required to hack it. If you use passphrases, use words that don’t seem to make sense together. The example they used was RedEnginesEatPurpleDust%!*. Get you a password journal – I use an address book – then print the name of the account, the login, the password, and the date you created it. Do it for every account, then put your journal in a safe place. Or you can get an online password manager. They store the information in the cloud so all you have to do is change the master password about every 6 months. There is more. Just remember that there are so many evils out there right now.

Madeleine Albright, American politician and diplomat who served as the 64th United States Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton, died of cancer at the age of 85. She was the first female secretary of state in U.S. history. Taylor Hawkins, drummer for Foo Fighters died at 50. According to a forensic report, his heart weighed double the average for a man his age. They think that this may have played a part in his death, along with a cocktail of 10 drugs found in his system.

On Google Earth, someone spotted a mountain of stolen bikes in a man’s backyard. I saw the picture and bikes were stacked high and covered the entire backyard property. Hundreds of bikes. The neighbors said the bikes had been there for years. Did the neighbors not scratch their heads and wonder why?

It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis,” Phil Collins told the concert crowd. “After tonight we all have to get real jobs.” The Genesis drummer has suffered from poor health since 2007 when he dislocated the vertebra in his upper neck during a concert. The 71-year-old began using a cane to walk in 2017 and performed all of the tour’s gigs seated in a chair.

Former President Donald Trump released an official statement announcing that he had a hole-in-one at his golf course. He said, “It took place at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on the 7th hole, which was playing 181-yards into a slight wind. I hit a 5-iron, which sailed magnificently into a rather strong wind, with approximately 5 feet of cut, whereupon it bounced twice and then went clank, into the hole.” “I won’t tell you who won because I am a very modest individual, and you will then say I was bragging – and I don’t like people who brag!” I bet Saturday Night Live has already written a skit about it for this weekend.

The safety harness and seat of the 14-year-old boy who fell to his death from an amusement park ride in Florida last week, were still locked at the end of the ride that is described as the world’s tallest free-standing drop tower, where 30 riders rise to the top, tilt forward and plunge nearly 400 feet at speeds reaching over 75 mph. There is speculation that the teen may have been too heavy for the ride. He was only 14 years old but already 6 feet, 5 inches tall, 340 pounds, with aspirations to make it to the NFL, but had been turned away from other rides because of his size. Dollywood has temporarily closed their drop tower ride that was made by the same manufacturer.

This is a story that needs to be shared. All Chick-fil-A locations throughout the US and Canada are partnering with DAR PRO Solutions, a Texas-based manufacturing company that will convert all the fast-food restaurant’s used cooking oil into cleaner burning renewable transportation fuel. More than 700 million gallons of renewable diesel are expected to be produced in 2022 as a result of the companies’ joint venture.

The University of Houston announced that it has created the Energy Transition Institute after receiving a $10 million gift from oil giant Shell. The institute will focus on production and use of reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy for all and will focus on three core areas: hydrogen, carbon management and circular plastics. The iconic koalas are now listed as endangered in several states and territories in Australia. Climate change and habitat loss had led to dramatic declines in their population. This comes after the black summer fires of 2019 and 2021, which some estimate may have left as many as 60,000 koalas dead or injured. A sad day for their nation.

Shanghai is beginning China’s largest and most extensive Covid lockdown in two years, to conduct mass testing and to control a growing outbreak. Blue Origin is set for their 4th crewed sub-orbital space flight on Thursday, two days later than planned because of expected high winds. One of Blue Origin’s first employees and architect of the New Shepard program, was added to the crew, replacing comedian Pete Davidson. Blue Origin and its customers do not discuss the cost of a New Shepard seat, but prices are thought to be in the half-million-dollar range or more. An Indiana man was arrested after murdering his wife by striking her in the face with a gallon-sized cement flowerpot after having fought about divorce because he was having an affair. The woman had just finished chemotherapy for breast cancer just days before the murder. Two teenage girls in New England were fortunate because their mothers loved them enough to turn them in to police after they assaulted, by kicking and punching, homeless people on the streets. The two girls are 14 and 16, as well as a 15-year-old boy who filmed the incident while egging on the attack. There are other videos circulating that appear to be the same situation.

Last night while I was making ramen soup, I watched the movie, Rescued by Ruby on Netflix, a real-life true story about an Australian shepherd/border collie mix rescue dog with behavioral problems (clever but naughty), trained by a state trooper who dreams of joining the K-9 Search & Rescue team. It was so good… and sweet. It is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and nothing gets 100%.

Will Smith and Chris Rock. Sigh. It is always a bad sign when you have to announce at the Academy Awards or family reunions that we do not condone violence. What we really want to see in our society, are good, positive role models from our athletics, politicians, actors, parents, school officials… you know what I’m saying. I always told my children that some individuals are put on this Earth and in their lives, not as a good example, but as a healthy guide or blueprint of what NOT to do. This gets to be a harder sell as human behavior seems to get more hostile and frightening.

On Sunday, I had the opportunity (thanks to Bonnie & David Novosad) to take my daughter to see Come From Away at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston. The story is so incredibly good. On September 11th, 2001, 7000 people are stranded in the tiny, charming town of Gander, Newfoundland after all flights into the US are grounded. While stranded, the people of Gander house, feed and entertain the “come from aways” as they find love, loss, and hope in the aftermath of terror. I have to say that it is one of the BEST musicals I have ever seen. I cried and I laughed. I bet there are still tickets left for this weekend. You have to mask which is fortunate because it helps catch the water from your eyes.

On the way to the office this morning, the bumper sticker on the car in front of me said, “I brake for Frogs.” The light took a long time to change but gave me time to think. I pivoted from thinking how silly it was to wondering about what kind of world would it be if everyone braked for frogs! I decided that it is definitely a world I want to live in.

What I Heard This Week 11-11-2021

What I Heard This Week November 10, 2021

When I came to work on Friday, I noticed a bunch of leaves cluttered around the front office door, so I put Teller inside and grabbed my broom. I swept in the direction that the wind was blowing, then about the time I got all the leaves swept up, the wind would change direction, blow them right back at me, into my shoes, and clinging to my hair. There is a love/hate relationship with leaves, but you must appreciate and respect them because leaves are so good for our world, providing food for the worms, compost, along with protection and natural fertilizer for our lawns and gardens. The wind is our true problem. 😊 So, as I swept, I happened to look down into the pots that I have on my front porch. Someone had gifted me with quite a few dirty paper plates and bowls with what looked like remains of spinach dip, candy wrappers, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, and cigarette butts… nine of them to be exact. I have benches out front meant to encourage people to grab a Source Weekly and stay for a while, but I never intended for that area to be the garbage collection location that it seems to be becoming. Since our little downtown has more established restaurants and bars, other businesses along with me, tend to pick up several beer bottles, cans, and trash, on most mornings. I do not expect putting these words on paper will make a difference, but it makes me feel better, so thanks for listening. Oh, did I mention the wads of chewing gum on the concrete out front. That was such a nice touch and so easy to scrape up, too. If every single day, EVERYONE picked up one piece of litter and said one kind thing to each person, our world would have to be a better place. Now, I am off to clean the toilets, sinks, floors, and kitchen here at the office, because it also puts me in such a good mindset.

OK, I admit that I am pretty whiny this week. Yesterday, I saw three different vehicles at three different intersections, all run red lights. That was just between my house and the office, which takes only eight minutes total travel time… and I actually stop for all the red lights. One SUV had a bunch of kids in the car. Little kids. Are you in such a hurry that you are willing to sacrifice yourself, your children, and the person that is trying to continue their journey and cross the intersection because their light has actually turned green? In most languages, green means you have approval to move ahead and proceed with your project or task at hand. Like driving to your intended destination. Unless, of course, you are in Japan where their green lights are actually blue. Slow down and enjoy this noticeably short life that we have.

Walking is the speed we were created to use when traveling through life. Jorgen Johansson

As a 30-year-old father, Benjamin Franklin lost his son to smallpox on November 21, 1736. Franklin later wrote this about this personal tragedy. “In 1736 I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the small-pox, taken in the common way. I long regretted bitterly, and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation. This I mention for the sake of parents who omit that operation, on the supposition that they should never forgive themselves if a child died under it, my example showing that the regret may be the same either way and that, therefore, the safer should be chosen.” I am telling you this just in case you need some sobering advice about your own children and the Covid vaccine. Hesitancy about medical interventions to resist infectious disease is nothing new in the United States and can be traced back as far as the nation’s earliest days. Vaccinations were not available yet, so physicians offered inoculations, a dangerous procedure in which doctors filled a deep incision in the arm with pus from a smallpox patient. Those that survived were immune, but then there were 15% to 20% that got active smallpox and died. We have come a long way and have MUCH better odds.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Pianist Yanni is 67. Singer Petula Clark is 89. Downtown. Don’t Sleep in the Subway. Actor Beverly D’Angelo of National Lampoon’s Vacation is 70. Singer Gordon Lightfoot is 83. If You Could Read My Mind. Rainy Day People. Movie director Martin Scorsese is 79. Actor Lauren Hutton is 78. Actor Meg Ryan is 60. Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels is 77. Singer-songwriter Bob Gaudio of The Four Seasons is 80.

This great story was found on This Day in History: Happy 70th Birthday to Lou Ferrigno, the body builder who became a household name for starring in The Incredible Hulk television series in the 1970s and 1980s. But the two-time Mr. Universe and fitness icon always had one weakness – his hearing. After ear infections as a toddler left him with major hearing loss, Ferrigno spent years wearing bulky hearing aids. Along with a speech impediment, he was often bullied by other children, and he began reading Hulk and Spider-Man comic books and dreamed of being strong enough to defend himself. He started weight training at age 13 using a broomstick and pails filled with cement because he couldn’t afford to buy weights. But, Ferrigno says his hearing loss gave him a determination that served him well. “I think that if I wasn’t hard of hearing I wouldn’t be where I am now… It gave me a certain strength of character.” Last year, at 69, he underwent cochlear implant surgery, and the results brought the still-muscular man to tears.

A New Zealand couple dug up a potato the size of a small animal from their backyard. They say it weighs 17-pounds and they have applied for recognition from Guinness World Records. They have named the potato Doug because they dug it up. Doug is not very pretty but would sure make plenty of potato salad.

Aaron Rodgers was asked a direct question back in August about whether he was or was not vaccinated. He replied, “Yeah, I’ve been immunized. There’s a lot of conversation around it, around the league, and a lot of guys who have made statements and not made statements, owners who have made statements. There’s guys on the team that haven’t been vaccinated. I think it’s a personal decision. I’m not going to judge those guys. He added, “It’s an interesting issue that I think we’re going to see played out the entire season.” Why didn’t he just say that he was not vaccinated? Why pretend to your teammates and friends? Right now, he has a $134-million contract with Green Bay including all sorts of monetary extras, so the fine of $14,650 is nothing but a drop in the bucket. But go on the field, locker room, fly with fellow players and staff, all the time putting their grandmas and families in harm’s way. Over the weekend, he was roasted by Saturday Night Live, portrayed in a skit by Pete Davidson. On the show’s opening, SNL’s version of Rodgers appears on Fox News defending his unvaccinated status. “It’s my body and my COVID,” Davidson/Rodgers said. “I can give it to whoever I want.” Such a reckless waste of a celebrated football superstar role model.

Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution was guillotined in Paris at age 37, in 1793. Two diamond bracelets once belonging to her, “imbued with her glamour, glory and drama,” sold for more than $8 million this week. The bracelets were commissioned in 1776 and made of 112 old-cut diamonds. And they are gorgeous.

Tyson, the meatpacking giant, was criticized for failing to do enough to protect their workers from Covid-19 last year. All together 151 employees have died of Covid. So, in August, they announced that all of its 120,000 workers would need to be vaccinated or lose their jobs. Some workers were angry at first, but some are now saying that they are relieved that Tyson made the decision for them and now feel selfish for the resistance. That is an interesting way to look at it. They are at 96% now.

Life is like a ten-speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use. Charles M. Schulz

Kristen Stewart is now engaged, and she said that it was her dream to have the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives star, Guy Fieri, to preside at her wedding. The spikey-headed man gave an enthusiastic yes! Bet the food at the reception will be good. Have you seen the new Kia logo? I was in traffic last week and saw it on a car. It took me a second to figure out what it was, but it looks good.

Cardiac arrest simply means the heart stops beating. When the lungs are squeezed like they were in the crowds at the Travis Scott concert, oxygen levels drop very quickly, the person loses consciousness, and the heart is not able to function like it should. Underlying conditions like asthma can make the situation more dangerous. Warning: When the gates opened that evening, there was a brief stampede of people trying to get into the sold-out venue. Warning: At previous concerts in 2015 and 2017, Travis Scott had pleaded guilty to encouraging fans to bypass security, rush stages, vault security barricades, and participate in violence. People were hurt at these concerts. This week, fans arrived unruly and aggressive, and eight concertgoers died. Travis Scott responded, “be safe rage hard.” (I wonder if he was grabbing his crotch while he said that.) One nine-year old was riding on his dad’s shoulders through the crowd, when the dad passed out. It is believed that the boy was then trampled, is now on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. Why would anyone bring a child to a concert where people encourage other people to break the rules? On Saturday afternoon, I was in line at Chipotle in Pearland when the woman in front of me asked her daughter if she had heard about what happened the night before, and how tragic it was. The high-schooler responded with, “But the people that go to his concerts are crazy!”  Out of the mouth of babes. The young and innocent are often unexpectedly wiser than the adults that are supposed to take care of them. They are saying that there was not enough security… good grief, there were 528 HPD Police and 750 Live Nation security personnel there, along with 50,000 fans. That should be plenty for a group of well-behaved individuals, but probably not enough for this group.

Two women with their husbands went to a fertility clinic and underwent IVF to conceive. Each of the women went home pregnant and nine months later gave birth just a week apart… but not to their own babies. The clinic had switched embryos, so each woman gave birth to the other one’s baby. It was pretty obvious to the couple from birth that the child might not belong to them, but months went by before testing was done that determined they did actually have the wrong children. I cannot even imagine… bonding with your newborn, then having to trade it in for your own baby.

This morning I happened to see that People Magazine announced their 2021 Sexiest Man Alive. I immediately sent the article to my daughter who agrees, it is about time. 52-year-old Paul Rudd has it all. He is cute, sweet, humble, a great actor, and he’s hoping the new title will grant him an invitation to “those sexy dinners” with George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Michael B Jordan – all recent winners. “I figure I’ll be on a lot more yachts,” Rudd said. “I’m excited to expand my yachting life. And I’ll probably try to get better at brooding in really soft light. I like to ponder. I think this is going to help me become more inward and mysterious. And I’m looking forward to that.” Sigh. I rest my case. He IS totally perfect. Have a great weekend and thanks for reading us. We appreciate it. Please sell something.

What I Heard This Week! 04-30-2020

What I Heard This Week April 29, 2020

Morning inmates! Anyone know how much vodka goes in scrambled eggs? We have been so serious lately with this virus stuff. Prepare to smile, in a smug, conceited or silly way. Eye-rolling accepted.

OK, singles. It’s time to start dating the older guys because they can get you in the grocery store earlier.

The Rolling Stones had been in the recording studio working on new music before our quarantine and decided to share one particular track they have been working on, Living in a Ghost Town, since everyone is living it right now. It was recorded in LA, London and in isolation, and is their first new original release since 2012. It has a little coronavirus vibe to it. Within days it secured the Stones’ first ever #1 on iTunes (which was, sigh, only created in 2001). Not bad for four guys that have been making music together since 1962. For the math-challenged, that’s about 58 years. Mick Jagger is 76, lead guitarist Keith Richards is 76, Drummer Charlie Watts is 78 and the baby, guitarist Ronnie Wood is only 72. Just when we need it, they are throwing more great rock-n-roll our direction.

To the people who bought 20 bottles of soap leaving none on the shelves for others, you do realize that to stop getting Coronavirus, you need other people washing their hands too.

A reporter appeared live on GMA to speak about CVS and UPS working to deliver prescriptions by drones in Florida. The reporter was onscreen for 30 seconds or so, which was time enough to see that a button-down shirt, jacket and beautiful background were not the only thing viewers saw. He did not have on his pants. He says he was trying to be efficient while getting ready for his workout and had on shorts. I wonder how my office would feel if I wore my nightgown to the office so I would be more efficient at bedtime. Some people were meant to work from home…and some were not.

They said that a mask and gloves were enough to go to the grocery store. They lied, everyone else had clothes on.

Just finished weed pulling in the garden, then I came in to work on this column. As I sat down and pulled the keyboard towards me, I felt a tickle on the inside of my elbow. You know, where the skin is soft and sensitive. I reached down to brush it off and saw a forgotten watermelon radish in my jean’s pocket with the long skinny 4-inch root sticking out. I meant to wash and eat it. Yes, the life of a week-end farmer is nice. By the way, I only harvested two pathetic radishes out of the whole package of seeds that I planted. Rule #1: Sometimes your harvest is good, more often your harvest is not good, so please remember to plant some for you, then more for the bugs, rabbits and the days that you forget to water.

For the second part of this quarantine, do we have to stay with the same family or are they going to relocate us? Just asking for a friend.

Sweeny Residents:A concerned citizen contacted City Hall about a suspicious interaction they had with two individuals attempting to gain access to the resident’s home to test their water for COVID-19. These individuals reportedly stated that they were contracted by the City to do this. The resident did not let them in to their home and instead offered them a sample through other means. They then proceeded to tell the resident that their water was contaminated, and a form needed to be filled out which included personal information including their Social Security Number. The individuals were driving a grey Mercedes.”  Beware and be smart, especially now. There are people that prey on disasters.

I used to spin that toilet paper roll like I was on The Wheel of Fortune, now I turn it like I am cracking a safe.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Talk show host Conan O’Brien is 57. Actress Andie MacDowell is 62. Four Weddings and a Funeral. Guitarist-songwriter Duane Eddy is 82. Singer Maurice Williams is 82. Maurice and the Zodiacs. Actor Channing Tatum is 40. Singer Robert Smith is 61. Actress Food Personality Valerie Bertinelli is 60. (how the heck did that happen?) TV personalities Drew & Jonathan Scott are 42. Talk-show host Jay Leno is 70. Actress Ann-Margaret is 79. First Lady Melania Trump is 50.

Tom Lester, the last surviving cast member of Green Acres, died at 81 of Parkinson’s. He played farmhand, Eb Dawson, one of Hooterville’s favorites, and was an evangelist. Dr. Lorna Breen, the NY Presbyterian Allen Hospital Emergency Room director, died at age 49 of suicide. She is being hailed as a hero and ‘casualty of war’ who witnessed death, horror and trauma as New York City and hospitals tended to a massive influx of patients they could not always save. NY Presbyterian Allen is a 200-bed hospital that at one time was treating 170 patients with COVID-19. Breen tested positive but recovered and had gone back to work, before going to stay with family. Philip Kahn, a decorated WWII veteran, died at age 100 of COVID-19, 100 years after his twin brother died from the Spanish Flu. He said, “…history is repeating itself. I lived a long time, 100 years, but 100 years is not a long time for history. We could have been better prepared for this.'”

How long is this social distancing supposed to last? My husband keeps trying to get into the house.

File this under “Things That You Should NOT Ever Consider Doing…Ever.” Do not drink bleach or disinfectants. Do not even think about placing disinfectants directly inside the body to treat infection. President Donald Trump said he was being sarcastic when he stated that perhaps the virus could be cured/killed with injecting disinfectants. Saturday Night Live loved it, so dreamy Brad Pitt opened the show playing Dr. Anthony Fauci, trying to explain what Trump really meant, then pulled off his wig and glasses and thanked everyone that is working so hard to protect us, including Dr. Fauci.

Corona Precautions: I went to the bathroom. I washed my hands. Opened the door with my elbow. Raised the toilet seat with my foot. I turned on the water faucet with a tissue. Opened the bathroom door to leave with my elbow. And when I returned to my table, I realized…I forgot to pull up my pants.

During this time when cities are closing urban parks because of overcrowding fears, a new design has been proposed for a vacant lot in the city of Vienna. The park is called Park de la Distance and will guide visitors on a solitary walk around a maze-like path on parallel lanes separated by hedges. Only one person can enter each lane at a time with each walk taking about 20 minutes. “Sometimes visitors are fully immersed by nature, other times they emerge over the hedge and can see across the garden,” the designers wrote in a project description. “But at all times, they keep a safe physical distance from each other.” Hmmm.  As a very practical woman, all I could think about was “who will trim all those hedges?”

People with a cold:I just want to stay in bed and do nothing, I feel terrible.” People with COVID-19:I feel terrible, I think I will go skiing in Austria, visit the Eiffel Tower and perhaps do some white-water rafting in Camino de Santiago

The LJ Intermediate School Choir program had another remarkable performance at this year’s UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contest. Congratulations again, David Hill. One of the movie’s that we have re-watched during this crazy time, was Pride & Prejudice (2005) with Keira Knightley. All three of us loved it. The WWI movie 1917 was great. Acetic acid, aka white vinegar, can act as a disinfectant that can destroy some bacteria and viruses, but it has NOT been found to be effective against COVID-19. Before COVID-19, there were more than 5 million borrowers in default on federal or private student loans. The U.S. Department of Education announced a 60-day suspension of collection actions and wage garnishment. Private collection agencies were instructed to halt all student loan collection activities. In less than 3-months, the pandemic has killed more Americans than the two decades of the Vietnam War. The U.S. hit one million cases, that’s one-third of all the world’s cases.

An employee at Wyoming Behavioral Institute, home to one of the largest clusters of cases in Wyoming, had tested positive for the virus. So, on the same day, his roommate (who was a health-care worker) sought to obtain a covid-19 test. It was suggested at testing time that the roommate self-quarantine for three days until the test results were back, but instead, the roommate decided to go to a party that night…and another party the next night. This worker received his test results: positive for coronavirus. 90% of us are doing what we are supposed to do, but it’s the 10% that there’s no control over. Easing restrictions will work if everyone does their part or it is two steps forward, ten steps back.

COVID-19 achieved what no female has ever been able to achieve. It canceled sports, closed bars and kept guys at home!

Today, I thought of more good things that have happened because of our shutdown. When I get ready to leave for the office each of my three mornings a week now, I go kiss each of my kids and tell them that I love them. This morning my daughter was having a meeting with one of her professors online and she mouthed to me what was going on as I walked in to her room, probably so I wouldn’t say something stupid…so I kissed her on top of the head and told her that I loved her, bent down to the computer, said hello to Professor George and left. What a great way to start the morning. Another day I sat on the back porch and drank coffee in my pj’s. That was great! Today I was opening mail and paying bills, but I stopped. Instead I took out two big green envelopes, put packages of flower seeds in each, decorated and colored them with pictures of flowers, sunshine, watering can, and a little girl holding flowers. Then got them ready to mail to Lydia, our office baby who is now a preschooler. We miss seeing her. Now she can plant some flowers and think of us when they sprout. The post office made $1.10. On a normal day I would not have taken the time to do this…

My body has absorbed so much soap and disinfectant lately, now when I pee, I clean the toilet.

It is May and for the most part, people are still making good choices, but we are now restless and poor. Gov. Abbott announced a partial reopening “because the COVID-19 infection rate has been on the decline over the past seventeen days.”  Well, I have no idea where that information came from because I cannot locate a decline. He said that businesses will be allowed to open-up in phases so that Texas is not forced to close businesses again after a second wave of outbreak. WHAT? Second wave! I absolutely do not want to start this process over from the beginning. If you personally feel the need to go out, I understand, but please wear a mask for those of us that have had punctured lungs, asthma and are over 60. We want to last for a little bit longer, and in all fairness, we need your help to do so. The CDC says that seven (7!) models anticipate a rise in cases depending on how much ‘contact reduction’ we practice. Please continue making good choices. Abbott also said, “It’s hard to get rid of this virus because it is so contagious. So, we’re not just going to open up and hope for the best.”  I hope that is true. As of 04-28-20, 476 cases reported, 6 deaths, 257 recovered and 1,578 tested in Brazoria Co.

What I understand about alcohol: 70% Isopropyl alcohol should kill 99.99% of everything on the skin. From what I could find, the reason to go with 91% is if you are cleaning something that should not get wet because it evaporates faster. 70% isopropyl is a better disinfectant because it works by denaturing proteins (penetrating the cell wall of a virus) with a small amount of water making it more efficient because it slows down evaporation, therefore increasing surface contact time, enhancing effectiveness.

To those who are complaining about a quarantine period and curfews, just remember that your grandparents were called to war, you are being called to sit on a couch and watch Netflix. You can do it.

Thank you to KeepLaughingForever.com for some of the jokes, along with lovely friends that continue to have a great sense of humor during all this. Be sure to find something to sell. We need ads.

What I Heard This Week! 01-23-2020

What I Heard This Week January 23, 2020

Borden Dairy (founded in 1857) has filed for bankruptcy, the second major U.S. dairy to do so lately. Dean Foods, America’s largest dairy producer filed in November 2019. People are now drinking almond, soy and oat milk. Protein bars and on-the-go breakfasts have replaced our morning bowl of cereal. Borden says 2,730 U.S. dairy farms have gone out of business in the last 18 months, meaning that the remaining farms can command higher prices. Poor Elsie.

Texans’ J.J.  Watt is scheduled to host Saturday Night Live on February 1, along with musical guest, country artist Luke Combs. Watt will be the 27th athlete to host and the 11th person with NFL experience. Some athletes included LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter, The Rock, John Madden, Wayne Gretzky,  Hulk Hogan, O.J. Simpson, Charles Barkley, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Bill Russell, George Foreman,  Fran Tarkenton, and Alex Karras. J.J. may be what it takes to get me to watch a whole show instead of just pulling up Eddie Murphy clips.

Northern Ireland has now recognized same-sex marriages, but couples reportedly must give 28 days’ notice of their plan to marry, so the first same-sex weddings are expected during the week of Valentine’s Day.

To determine if a coffee pod (think Keurig) is recyclable, look on the packaging for the plastic number. Coffee pods that are recyclable are typically made out of plastic #5, where pods that are not recyclable are made out of plastic #7. Try to avoid purchasing #7 coffee pods since these end up in a landfill. Before tossing, be sure to peel off the aluminum top (trash) and empty the grounds (nature loves the grounds so dump them in your yard or flower bed). If you throw the pod inside a recycling bin before removing the top and coffee grounds, it may no longer be recyclable. This goes for anything you put into recycling. Clean it out first. It was reported that enough Keurig plastic pods were sold in 2014 to circle the world more than ten times. Since this way of drinking coffee has become so much more popular in the past few years, just think of how many pods are now in landfills. It’s estimated that one in three homes in the U.S. have a single-serve coffee maker. We do pour-overs at my house – unbleached paper filters, then we place the filter and spent coffee in our compost. Easy, affordable, Earth-friendly solution.

A woman with dementia survived for six days in her snowbound Suburban in Butte Meadows, California. She stayed warm by periodically turning on the car for heat and bundling up with moving blankets and floor mats.

Sometimes I don’t wear my glasses when I really should…obviously. After midnight last night, I was tidying up before I went to bed. I had been at the kitchen table working on tax stuff for several hours and getting tired, so I took my off glasses. Huge mistake. Anne-Elisabeth had been home for the weekend so there were a few things out of place.I unloaded lunch containers, placed them in the dishwasher along with a coffee cup, then grabbed a glass jar, unscrewed the lid (assuming it was dirty) and turned it upside down as I placed it in the dishwasher. Yikes. The jar had quite a few poppy seeds waiting to be planted in the garden. You know, the ‘tinier than a grain of salt’ seeds? They were scattered throughout the unsmooth bottom of my dishwasher. I could have used tape but then I couldn’t plant them.  I pulled a credit card from my purse and scraped up as many as I could and put them back in the jar. The others were wet (see above…coffee and lunch remains,)so I got as many as I could with wet paper towels and laid them on the cabinet to dry. This morning, I realized the seeds had stuck, so I tore the paper towels into pieces and threw them in my flower bed. Tonight, I will place a little potting soil over each piece and hope for the best. Who knows, they may stay in place and grow even better this year. Last year the rains washed the seeds into the edges of the flower beds. I may be on to ‘something.’

There is a couple getting married in April, I don’t know who they are, but they are asking Habitat for Humanity of Southern Brazoria County to provide a Wedding Registry so their friends and family can contribute to the building of a Habitat home rather than traditional gifts. I LOVE it. Habitat is now working on House #113 in Brazoria County. 113 people are lucky to have all those volunteers build them new homes. If you want to help, call them. They need volunteers and will find you a job that’s perfect for YOU.

There will be a Chocolate Bay Watershed Public Meeting to discuss Chocolate, Halls and Mustang bayous water quality issues due to high levels of bacteria, on January 30th at the Alvin Public Library. For more information call Steven Johnston 832-681-2579. We need to know that we have a clean, safe community.

Recently I wrote about, “it being time for my kids to go back to school after winter break,”meaning, I love to see them come, I love to see them go. A friend read the column and shared something that one of her friends said years ago. “The best holiday lights were the ones that she saw on back of her kid’s cars as they drove away from the house and back to school.” I just had to repeat this, it’s too funny. Thank you, Emily.

A customer came in today and I was rewriting his pre-written ad for a rental house on the intercoastal canal and it mentioned crabbing. Except he had spelled it with just one ‘b’. After he left, I looked up the word just to be sure I was right. The Urban Dictionary definition for crabbing came up as: “When a man is urinating in a public urinal on his own and he attempts to urinate an equal amount in each urinal by sidestepping like a crab while using hands to control urine distribution.Such asI went into the urinals and there was no one there so I did a bit of crabbing.” We live in a weird world now.

A teenage kid from NY was interning at NASA. Just three days into the job, he discovered a brand-new planet. The old Randalls/Albertsons grocery store (that takes you a tad bit further back in time) will be re-modeled by Olin to use as administrative offices. It’s time. Macy’s was founded 162 years ago in NY and are closing 28 namesake stores and one Bloomingdale’s store. Pier 1 Imports will close 450 of its 936 stores.

Monster Jam is Jan. 25th& Feb. 8-9th in Houston. Brazosport Symphony is Jan. 25th called Covering all Basses. I went to the Hotel California Symphony concert in Oct. and it was great. The symphony is having so much fun this year. Nunsense at The Center for the Arts and Sciences is showing Feb. 21 – March 1.

There is a u-pick tulip farm in San Antonio just south of I-10 that you can visit, but just for a short time because there’s such a short bloom time. There is also a maze for the kids and another tulip farm in Dallas.Texas-tulips.com. Great idea for a Valentines getaway, just pretend it’s Amsterdam.

In case you haven’t already heard, it’s official. 2019 was the second hottest year worldwide in recorded history.  What year was the hottest?  Globally, was 2016. Which brings us to the fact that the past decade was the hottest ever recorded on the planet, driven by an acceleration of temperature increases in the past five years, according to data released ‘jointly’ by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Perhaps releasing information jointly will make a bigger difference to people understanding the problem. Global average surface temperatures last year were 1.8 degrees higher than the average from the middle of last century.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will have Willie Nelson on March 4th. Midland will open on March 3 and Luke Bryan will close the final show. No George Strait this year.

In North Houston, a couple took their 8-year-old cat in for her check-up and rabies vaccine. Because of a mix-up on syringes, Sophie was mistakenly euthanized.  When the mistake was realized, the vet gave her oxygen, fluids to try and flush out her system and epinephrine to get her heart going again but she died. Her cat momma says, “When you take your animal to any vet, not just this particular office, but any Veterinary office, be vigilant, ask questions, ask what their protocols and procedures are.” I can’t even imagine losing any of mine.

Many thoughts have gone through my head as I tried to decide whether to share this story or not. I’m not a fan of The Bachelor, but Hoda and Jenna were discussing a clip from the show this morning. I think it’s funny. OK. You decide. One of the female contestants (Kelsey, 2017 Miss Iowa, 28,) brought a bottle of champagne “all the way from Des Moines, Iowa.” One of the other contestants (Hanna, Alabama model, 23) opened that‘special’bottle of champagne and Kelsey exploded as she confronted the accused contestant, who said, “I’m sorry, I’ll get you another bottle of champagne.” (Surely, we all believe that.) Fast forward and the Bachelor (Peter Weber) offered Miss Iowa a brand-new bottle of champagne with Miss Iowa sitting very, very close to him. She accepts the bottle from him, picks it up and chug-a-lugs straight from the bottle (as she quietly mentions, “I’m not always a classy b****.”  Uhhh, we noticed. I think the proper word for this is a swig. She took a big swig from the bottle. As she prepared to lower the bottle, all those bubbles just gasp to be released, explode, geyser up and spew champagne ALL OVER HER FACE and hair. Hmmm. I’m glad that I can only afford champagne on special occasions because I could be such an embarrassment to my children. 😊

A judge has ordered Google to turn over a year’s worth of Jussie Smollett’s emails, private messages, photographs and location data. A special prosecutor is trying to find out why 16 counts of disorderly conduct charges were abruptly dismissed against the actor after he allegedly staged an attack in downtown Chicago and then lied to police. Smollett maintains his innocence. I’m interested.

On the front page of The Chronicle was a picture of a mother and her 15-year-old son who has been suspended multiple times and she says “there must be a better way” to discipline students in Beaumont ISD.  Students were suspended at a rate more than six times the state average and far more than any other district last year, 46 suspensions per 100 students. Well, you want to know what I think…if that had been me at age 15, I wouldn’t have been able to ‘stand’ next to my mother after the first suspension. Raise your children at home, which is your job, then the teachers can spend their whole class-time teaching, which is their job. It’s disruptive to constantly discipline in the classroom. That’s what I think. Thanks for reading us this week. Be sure to let us know how we are doing.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
