What I Heard This Week 12-07-2023

What I Heard This Week December 6, 2023

After several years of listening to George Santos (who is now describing himself as Former Congressional Icon), even fellow Republicans grew weary of the absolute embarrassment, finally agreeing to expel him from Congress. The SNL Weekend Update farewell skit was pretty funny this week – well worth watching. Now HBO confirmed that it has optioned the rights to author Mark Chiusano’s (November 28th, 2023) nonfiction book, “The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos.” I hope Santos doesn’t make money off of this. Santos has set up an account on Cameo, a website that allows users to purchase personalized videos from celebrities, so that is his money-making job now. Stay tuned…

HOLIDAY EATING TIPS – it’s the time of year that every magazine or cooking show has the most delicious recipes (all variations of butter) just waiting for us to pull it all together and start cooking for our guests and friends. So, I was searching for Holiday Eating Tips and found this. It was on Joke Budda and is funny. A lot funnier than if I told you what it said, so here it is:

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly, it’s rare. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It’s a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert, Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights. – Maya Angelou

The band KISS exited the stage for the last time as a real life, in the flesh band … then announcing their new era as a Digital Avatar Band … basically a hologram tour. Their avatars – Demon, the Starchild, Catman, and Spaceman will take over with a combination of LED screen projection, lasers, heavy metal smoke and pyrotechnics…larger than life. Just like the ABBA Voyage show did a few years back. Wonder if I can do that when AARP calls for my retirement at The Source Weekly. There is also some speculation that they may recruit new people to put on the make-up, then tour, like Blue Man Group. Hmmm.

Oh, Christmas isn’t just a day. It’s a frame of mind. – Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Think about this: When the women of the Golden Girls TV show – Blanche, Dorothy, and Rose – first began the show about old women, they were actually playing women in their 50’s, the same age the women – Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte are in the Sex and the City sequel series, And Just Like That. Hmmm.

People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. – Unknown

If you want to be a really cool person, read this, but then you must practice using it in a sentence. Rizz is the 2023 Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year. It is style, charm, or attractiveness… the ability to attract another person, as in cha-ris-ma. If you possess lots of rizz, then you just might be called a rizzler.  But, Tom Hanks and George Clooney both insist that if you claim to, or just think you have rizz, then you don’t. “It’s gotta be placed upon you,” said Hanks. Those two would definitely know. Just one of 690 new words to get added to the dictionary.

The U.S. just set a record for mass shootings and deaths in a single year. The owners of a Colorado funeral home where 190 decomposing bodies were found, are set to appear in court facing allegations that they abused corpses, stole, laundered money and forged documents. The 3-year cruise ship that was canceled… one woman sold her home to make the trip and paid $562,000 for a 7th floor balcony cabin on the ship. Brenda Lee first released Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree in 1958. It just hit No.1 on the Hot 100. So at 78 years of age, Brenda Lee became the oldest person to top the U.S. chart. The 65-year gap between the song being released and hitting No. 1 is the longest for any artist, a record previously set by Mariah Carey in 2019, when All I Want For Christmas Is You reached No. 1 after 25 years. The world’s largest iceberg, A23a, is moving into open waters near Antarctica after being stuck in place for 40 years. It measures 40 by 32 nautical miles (roughly 3x’s the size of New York City) and was at one time part of an ice shelf in West Antarctica.

Two bloody leather swatches from the 1961 presidential limousine that John F. Kennedy was assassinated in, on November 23, 1963 in Dallas, have sold for $46,865. The limo was refurbished after the assassination, then used by Lyndon B. Johnson.

There are so many celebrity liquor/booze brands. Three new ones are Frasher & Thompson whiskey by Michael Bublé, named after two rivers in British Columbia. Guy Fieri has Flavortown Spiked, a fruit-punch flavored malt beverage, described as adult Kool-Aid, but not as sweet. Pantalones Organic Tequila by Matthew and Camila McConaughey. Their advertising video shows them motorcycling pant-less… pantalones is Spanish for trousers.

Have a great week. Please sell something! Thank you for reading us.

What I Heard This Week! 01-14-2021

What I Heard This Week January 14, 2021

Quebec has a new imposed curfew to help slow the spread of coronavirus that will remain in place until February 8.  There are quite a few exceptions including walking your dog. You must stay within a half a mile of your home in order to allow your dog to do his/her business.  About an hour after the curfew went in effect, a woman was seen walking alongside her husband…on a leash. Yes, she was walking her husband. They were each fined $1500 for breaking the rules. Police said the couple did not cooperate with officers at all and insisted they were following the rules, despite not having a real dog with them. The woman vowed not to pay for the ticket and said she would just let them accumulate. The fines start at $1,000 and can get as high as $6,000 for repeat offenders.

Wait and prune your crepe myrtles around Valentine’s Day. Any earlier than that and they may put out new growth and a freeze would kill all the new delicate growth. Do not prune azaleas or hydrangeas now because you will be cutting off all your spring blooms. Do not prune hibiscus yet because the freeze-damaged wood will protect the green wood farther down the branches. You can prune to green wood when the danger of frost is past.

Think before you speak. Read before you think.” Fran Lebowitz

According to a survey by the government sponsored mortgage-finance company Freddie Mac, the average rate for a 30-year mortgage fell to 2.65 percent for the week ending Jan. 7, down .99 percentage points from the year before. The average rate for a 15-year mortgage fell to 2.16 percent, down .91 percentage points.

Several gorillas at San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California have tested positive for the virus in what is believed to be the first known cases among primates in the US and possibly the world. It is believed that the infection came from a member of the park’s wildlife care team who also tested positive for the virus but was asymptomatic but always wore a mask around the gorillas. The gorillas routinely get flu vaccines, and it is possible one day they could be vaccinated against COVID, but there are no plans for that at this moment.

It is time to start thinking about gardening.  To tell you the truth, I think about it all the time.  We have made one trip to Buchanan’s, then Lowe’s this past Saturday to get a few more plants to fill in the blanks. I dug out all the puny annuals in my front yard, then placed the new flowers like pieces in a puzzle before I ran out of daylight and it got cold. I am super wimpy about the cold. It rained all day Sunday, so all those pots are still out there, scattered here and there in their little black pots, just waiting for warmer, drier weather. Sigh. I hope they live. I ended up with yellow-peach pansies, white alyssum, Dusty Miller, and ornamental cabbage that is a very pretty shade of purple, very lacy looking. I also bought a flat of Snapdragons that are supposed to be coral colored, but none of them were flowering so I bet they will be a different color when they bloom. Does not matter, it should all be pretty together, for the bees and the butterflies. Just wish I could have found a few petunias. Those always do well in our area. The poppies are already coming up in the backyard (I planted three new varieties last year, some purple), the amaryllis haven’t died back (it’s been too hot), and the day lilies are growing like crazy. I will have some to share.  I found a 10-ft. red oak tree marked down to $40, along with two weeping red buds for $10 each that I will plant down on the creek. I took a little walk through my vegetable garden on Saturday (since I hadn’t been back there since my COVID-vacation), only to find the prettiest swiss chard ever. (Yes, I made soup.)  My cilantro has come up on its own, along with English and lemon thyme. There were quite enough sugar snap peas for quite a nice snack while I was dreaming about what I wanted to plant this year. There are not many garden plants available at the stores right now but soon, so prepare.

Thanks To:  Belinda at BC Truck Outfitters for taking time out of her day to make a sweet phone call just to say hello.  Kelly at CVS Pharmacy. That is where I’ve been going to get my COVID testing. She included personality, kindness and a terrific ‘car-side’ manner. Sticking an extra-large and long Q-tip up your nose is not much fun, but she was the best! Again, all my friends that provided food and love last month. You set new standards. To all the people that have checked up on Teller the Wonder Dog. He is simply great. A little hard-headed, but just as sweet as can be. I will never have clean carpet, but let’s face it, a clean house and clean carpet is overrated. My kids will not remember the dirt, but they will remember that we had a dog and three cats that they love.

There was a little brouhaha about Martha Stewart getting her COVID vaccine before front line and essential-type workers got theirs. Come on people. She looks great but she is 79, and for whatever reason, they qualify anyone over the age of 65, as old. Yes, it is offensive, but you get the vaccine before your best friend who is just 64. (If you’re not offended, then you’re probably only 40, but your time is coming.) So, Martha got on Instagram to defend herself explaining that she stood in line just like everyone else at the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Hmmm. Did you read that?  Martha Stewart Center for Living.  I think she deserves to get her vaccination anytime she feels like it.

Harris County confirmed their first case of the new COVID variant #B117. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo called the discovery disturbing. “Along with our recent trends, we could be on the road to a crisis if we don’t change our behavior now. Do your part.” The thing that puzzles me is that the testing we do now, does not test for the new strain, so how do they know that no one else has it. Just wondering so I Googled. It said that they take a percentage of sample tests and do deep genetic analysis (sequencing), so only around 51,000 of 17 million US cases have been sequenced. Also, it is much more expensive testing. That means if the new strain has not been found, they just might be missing it.

Life is like a book. Some chapters are sad, some are happy, and some are exciting. But if you never turn the page, you will never know what the next chapter holds. Facebook

Envoy Mortgage of Houston surprised a firefighter, a nursing home assistant, and a special education teacher – all frontline workers, by paying their mortgages until the end of 2021. Nice. Goodwill Industries received a $15 million donation from the MacKenzie Scott Foundation (former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.)

Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book, or for another book… The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better… Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.” – Annie Dillard

The Sex and the City revival is officially coming to HBO Max. It will be a 10-episode series and the new chapter is called “And just like that…” the story continues following Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes), and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York), as they pursue “love and friendship” during their 50s. Sorry, sounds like Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones) will not be a part of it.

In the history of our United States, January 6th, 2021 will be listed as a very dark day.  Five people died, at least 60 people were arrested, and over 50 police and security officers were hurt or injured (many hit in the head with metal pipes,) as mobs stormed the Capitol in Washington, DC. A 34-year-old Georgia woman, Rosanne Boyland, was, “potentially crushed to death” during the breach. Ben Phillips, 50, a trip organizer with a bus full of Trump supporters from Pennsylvania, suffered a stroke in the chaos. Ashli Babbitt, 35, and a 14-year-old Air Force veteran was shot by Capitol police as the rioters were forcing their way through doors in the Capitol. One man, Kevin Greeson, 55, of Alabama, died of a heart attack in the riot. Capitol Police officer, Brian Sicknick, died after being attacked by rioters, hitting him in the head with a fire extinguisher. He was 42.  Hmmm.

Scientists were surprised to learn that young alligators can grow back as much as 9 inches of a lost tail. Just like lizards. What makes the alligator interesting, apart from its size, is that the regrown tail exhibits signs of both regeneration and wound healing within the same structure, with regrowth of cartilage, blood vessels, nerves, and scales.

I just found something really interesting and FUNNY. I will work on that for next week because I want to share in more detail. Have a great week, wear your mask and be safe.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
