What I Heard This Week 08-29-2024

What I Heard This Week August 28, 2024

Oh, NO! This thing you are reading right now is our last publication! I have so much more information and so many stories left that I haven’t had time to tell you. The top of my desk is still FULL of notes, sections of newspapers, all with great ideas…just in case there was a struggle to pull together something really interesting for you to read each week. It just doesn’t seem fair that now I’m going to have the time to tell you, but… oh, well. Kay always said “It is what it is.”
Today, I am going to give you tiny bits of information from some of these ideas, so you can pull up the rest of the story if you think it might interest you.

Drinking tea daily may reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes by 47 percent. Autopia, part of Walt Disney’s Tomorrowland where young kids are able to experience driving for the first time, says that the polluting gasoline motors are on their way out and either electric or hybrids are on their way in. Yep, clean energy and sustainability at Tomorrowland. (If you have ever been in line there, you know the gasoline fumes are pretty stinky.) Arion Press is one of the worlds’ great printing centers, located in San Francisco, the last vertically integrated printing facility in the U.S. to make books entirely by hand, from start to finish, under one roof. Everything that is printed in their books was from a piece of metal they cast on-site. A collector’s treasure. DreamWorks Land is open at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida…splash in Shrek’s Swamp, scream loud on the Trolls Trollercoaster, learn new moves with Kung Fu Panda’s Po. OK, there is more but I’m out of time. You can figure it out.

Did you know that in order to study diseases, scientists grow human brain cells in rats? Dolly Parton has a new four-lipstick collection called Jolene Red, Honey Plum, Rosebud, and Birthday Suit. Hmmm. Mattel has a new line of dolls inspired by Wicked (the movie comes out 11/22/24.) There will be Ariana Grande’s Glinda, Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Marissa Bode’s Nessarose.

Have you ever sat down with a bunch of friends and suddenly everyone is talking about their aches and pains? I read in a magazine that is called and an “Organ Recital.” Love it. I’m repeating it.

The caretakers of the Alamo want/need to replace the century-old concrete roof which is deteriorating on the 300-year-old structure. If it happens, they plan to build a giant hangar-like shelter around the Alamo with complicated scaffolding at all levels, then the site would be closed to visitors for over two years to do the work. The existing concrete roof, which is up to five inches thick in places, is full of corrosion in its steel rebar. The Daughters of the Republic installed the existing roof in 1920, the U.S. Army had installed a gabled wooden roof in 1851. Architect George Skarmeas who has studied the Alamo Church in detail, has warned that efforts to save the church, “may have some of the greatest complications of any project in the world.” Hmmm.

When my kids were growing up, we had museum day – all three of us picked a museum to visit on a Saturday. (We had grocery store days, too) Think Children’s Museum, Space Center, Museum of Fine Arts, Art Car Museum, The Health Museum, the list is endless. Did you know that there is a Funeral History Museum (very nice and not morbid at all), a printing museum (very interesting for ME and older kids), the Holocaust Museum (so important that we let our children know the story), and now I just read about the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office History Museum.  It includes several patrol cars, a motorcycle, and donated memorabilia from collectors. Every little (or big) boy’s dream. 2359 Holloman in Conroe near the sheriff’s office administration building. Tues/Thurs 10am to 4pm.

Totus porcus aut nihil is a classical Latin phrase for “All or Nothing…

It was my mother’s 89th birthday. Because my car has some age, I rent a car when I go to see her, because I know you don’t want me calling you to come save me on the side of the road. So, I went to rent my car. We are sorry but you can’t rent a car because your license expired 20-something days ago ON YOUR BIRTHDAY. Yikes. I remember receiving a letter but that was in February or so, and that was way too early. I take care of things when they catch on fire. I told the car rental that I would be right back. Yes, I ran to get that new license. Now, I might mention at this point that because of a minor emergency at the office, I had left the house that morning without any make-up or doing my hair, I had on jeans and a favorite t-shirt that I wear to work in the yard that has a permanent stain on it, and flip-flops… BUT I WAS WILLING TO HAVE MY DRIVERS LICENSE PICTURE TAKEN AT THAT EXACT MOMENT, A PICTURE THAT WOULD BE IN MY WALLET FOR SHOW AND TELL FOR THE NEXT EIGHT YEARS. I found the new DPS location in Angleton, and jumped right into line. Whoops. No appointment…no service. Plus you must bring your birth certificate this time. Sigh. I was pretty pouty when I left. I went back to my office to look for my birth certificate but I couldn’t find the keys to the fire safe. Of course. So I got online and ordered a copy of the birth certificate ($22) plus $16 extra for Express Mail… only to be told at the end of the ordering process that processing could take 20 days. ☹ So much for Express Mail. The next morning I went to the East Annex and received a copy of my birth certificate ($23) that spelled my mother’s name wrong. Sigh. I headed right back to DPS with three magazines, my phone and my giant water cup, telling them that I was willing to sit on the floor and wait until someone missed their appointment And I had washed my hair. No go! But I believe they enjoyed my enthusiasm and confidence… at least I think that’s what they were whispering about. I finally have an appointment this week and I’m going with a friend that also forgot that it was her DPS time. My sister, whose birthday is a few days after mine, was able to do hers online, since she also forgot. I guess this is my purpose in life right now – to set a good example for others… is your license getting ready to expire? I care.

This was the title of a magazine article I saved: Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Funny. I just love this title.

The Purple Rain house in Minneapolis is really nothing special to look at unless you are a Prince fan. It’s the house where Prince filmed part of the 1984 movie and wrote the soundtrack. It is quite a tourist attraction and is supposedly still owned by the late musician’s estate. It is now listed as a Special Experimental Stay on Airbnb, called an ICON, extraordinary experiences from the world’s greatest icons… which includes 11 listings requiring an application, and a random lottery pick. The first Icons included a house suspended by 8,000 balloons, one of Disney and Pixar’s most iconic homes called The UP House located in New Mexico, a night at the Ferrari Museum in a bed made from the same leather as Ferrari seats, located in Maranello, Italy, a re-creation of X-Men ’97 X-Mansion in Westchester NY, a Secret Speakeasy Chill Session and live stand-up with Kevin Hart, A Living Room Session with Doja Cat, and more, including Core Memories with Inside Out 2 with an overnight stay at Headquarters, the control center of Riley’s emotions. (I think some of these occasions may have already happened so there’s sure to be new ones added.)

Climate change is no longer some far-off problem; it is happening here; it is happening now. – Barack Obama

A recent obituary noted that the deceased Houston attorney always believed there was good in everyone, saying, “You can be a buzzard or a bee: you can look for the rotten in life, or you can look for the flowers and honey; and you will find what you look for.” I liked that.

There are MANY different blood types … A, B, 0 and AB, plus so many more that the average person has probably never ever heard of. Scientists recently discovered an extremely rare new blood group called Er, the result of an interaction between two existing blood groups… and if I could understand it, I would tell you all about it… but I can’t.

Have you seen the new video of the Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga duet, Die with a Smile. It’s a pretty nice little love song from two of the greatest voices. Putting those voices together made magic. I just listened to it over and over again while I was working on this column. You can pull it up on your phone. It’s really nice.

Word of the Moment: Demuremeaning reserved, modest, coy or shy (typically used of a woman). Supposedly it’s now a social media trend that means cutesy, clean and mindful, not messy or loud. Which is the opposite of most of our world. Hope it catches on… intended as a compliment word.

First it was the 40-oz. supersize Stanley Quencher Tumbler flying off the shelves during 2022 and on into the holiday season of 2024. They retailed for $45 IF you could find one. It was released in crazy new colors, and everyone had to have at least one. Sorry, Yeti. Remember Beanie Babies. Now Buc-ee’s shoppers are going crazy over their new glow in the dark Halloween Yukon tumblers in 32 or 40-oz. Such a one-of-a-kind gift idea. Demand is high. I mean really high. They’re big re-sale items, which means is if you have money, you can find one. If that’s not your thing, then they have plenty more Halloween merchandise just waiting for your debit card.

Thank you to Janette at Animal Control, for sending pictures of Teller when he was still on the streets. Just looking at my poor baby with all the missing fur, especially his naked tail, made me sad… and happy. He is just the best… and so are you, Janette. Thank you for the love.

Aren’t security cameras great! Two suspected arsonists in Bakersfield, California, set themselves on fire attempting to burn down an immigration center. In Australia, the same thing happened to a beautiful barber shop. They shattered the glass, entered the shop, poured accelerant all over everything including their clothes and hands, then lit it. In Canada, two men smashed a window then hurled something into the building, there was an explosion, and they ran away with at least one foot on fire, as the guy’s mask fell off. Darn. Then, that led me to a video of a man that set himself on fire while trying to burn down his ex-wife’s home with her and their kids inside. Karma. I wondered if a woman would ever be so messy that she would do the same thing. Hmmm.

SPCA is celebrating 50 years of love and care in our county. The Julie Baron Memorial Fur Ball will be held October 24, 2024. I’m telling you now because I won’t be back to remind you, so go put it on your calendar right now. For more information:  renee@spca.org  The kitties and the puppies need you to be there. Please spay and neuter ALL your pets, so these great folks don’t have to work so hard with so little. BACH… Brazoria County Association for Children’s Habilitation needs your help so they can continue providing ongoing life changing services. A little bit goes a long way in a child’s life. ashleyf@bacheci.org or 979-849-2447.

As I am cleaning out my office, I am also trying to read The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning. How to free yourself from a lifetime of clutter…or in my words, get rid of your stuff before you die because they’re going to throw it all away, anyway. At least this way, it can be my idea. I’m going to miss this.

The Source Weekly isn’t (wasn’t) just a newspaper. We also tried to provide education, convenience, affordability, and love. Over the years (25 years in case you forgot), we produced many different ideas to share with our friends and customers; thousands of different bookmarkers for the schools, several years of laminated maps of downtown LJ with all the businesses and phone numbers because downtown is so darned confusing for people. We used the heck out of those maps, handing them out to all the downtown merchants so they could keep them on their counters. We used one of our old maps just today to help a man find his way. There were yearly calendars honoring local artists that we passed out to customers and the Art League. Those were fun. A Prayer for Our Nation bookmarkers National Day of Prayer. We always handed out flags on 4th of July, Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. After I recovered from my breast cancer diagnosis, I started painting pink ribbons downtown, then donated the money to The Mermaid Project. Eventually we used cling-on ribbons (easier) and if I remember right, over the years we were able to donate over $12,000 so women without insurance could afford a mammogram. The downtown car show with State Farm where we raised over $4000 for the Military Moms and Wives of Brazoria County, thanks to Debra and Karla. Santa at the Gazebo with State Farm, PCCare, and other fabulous, caring neighbors… the trolley rides, games and a night of family fun. Coloring contests on Halloween and Thanksgiving. Paint a nutcracker at Christmas or Build-a-Snowman contest. Koozies. Jumping Beans. They made a lot of noise in the back of the office. Personalized Fortune Cookies for the Chinese New Year. The LJ Enchanted Oak Witness to History contest. We ordered thousands of paper covered hangers with our logo on them, then handed them out to all the dry cleaners in town. We won $75 for that idea at conference. Seed packets in the spring… Forget-Me-Nots. Listen, when we had money, we had fun and shared it with the community.

Oh, and have I mentioned how many First Place awards we won for years and years with The Community Newspaper Association… we won them all, each year. We were so proud!

This is where I’m going to get in trouble, naming names, because there are too many to remember, but know you are always in my heart. Thanks to every employee through the years that allowed me to raise my children at the office. Gage was two and I was three months pregnant the day we started. Anne-Elisabeth was born Thursday after the paper came out, then the following Tuesday, the two of us were back at work. I believe my kids became the wonderful adults that they are, because the village we called this office, with so many positive role models that helped raise them to adulthood. Even when Gage would call the office and pretend to be someone from a foreign land… Connie still loved him. I can still hear her when she figured it out saying, ‘Oh, GAGE BAKER.” The discipline, care and love that everyone gave them, the attention that they were provided when they were required to ask everyone in the office, “How is your day going?” on their way in from school each day. It helped teach them to be good people, to care for others, and to listen. Thanks everyone for allowing this office to adopt Teller the Wonder Dog who has come to work here every day since his adoption. It provided a way to socialize him after abuse on the streets. Thank you all for knowing this was a small “family” business and not a corporation. Thanks to Kevin for believing in me at that time. He came home one evening, said that The Bargains had closed, and I said very naively, “Well, I could do that!” And The Bargain Source was born. Beth Corbett for spending the night under the folding table with me as we struggled to go from a cut-and-paste newspaper world to everything done on a computer. We WOULD NOT have made it without her. Helen (1999) who brought years of newspaper experience to the table. She sold outside, did reports, kept up with it all and still went home on time. Amazing. Lucinda for sharing the bathroom with Gage while I was potty-training him. Gage thought everyone should talk to him while he was on the job.  Accountant Martha, and Lena; they keep me honest. Tom, for making sure that no napping babies were left behind in case of fire when I scooted off to meetings or to customers. Many thanks to the people (almost everyone) that came to work here and didn’t leave until they were ready to retire.  Tina (1999)  arrived, then encouraged her sister Connie (2007), to come play with us. Both ladies are still here and such an important part of this family. Kay started in 2003, then her daughter, Ashley, came to work in 2010. Ashley got married and then our office baby, Lydia, arrived in 2015. Thank you Ashley for making us an office baby of our very own. Three generations, and we desperately NEEDED a baby here at the office. “Hou-Bobby” Payne (1999), a part-time magician who showed us a new trick every Wednesday afternoon while the paper cooked, before we rushed to Texas City for printing. Red was one of our first delivery people in 1999 along with his daughter Novellia, then another daughter, Losha (2004) joined delivery, and over the years, Losha’s daughters, and now her granddaughters help her deliver. That’s 4 generations. Hailey joined our delivery when she first moved to town and is now doing most of our routes. Noel, our delivery driver and friend that brings all the newspapers to us on Wednesday afternoon. Blue Star Printing in Houston along with Ana.  Laura, Dawn, Janice, Michelle, Patricia, Deborah, Rachelle, Troy, Cindy B., Cole & Kayla, Cathy, Bonnie, Cindy S., Grady, Kelly, Nancy, Lisa B., Tommy, Sara, Sandra, Pam (2017), Hailey (2018), Thomas (2019). All of our downtown neighbors and friends that we see almost every day on walks or to pick up the mail, who always have time for a chat or a dog treat. Thank you all.

Customers… you’re all our favorites… but Wally Johnson and Ralph O’Henley, both newspaper men for years and years, read The Source letter-by-letter, paragraph by paragraph, each week. Mark, for his Thursday morning calls adding fun information. Hayman, with God and his garden as his witness, made sure we never went hungry. Mr. Corder, you’re the best!

I should have done this sooner, but emotionally I wasn’t ready to leave people that have been with me and been so good to me… for so many years… without a job. But it’s time to call it quits. Hurricanes, freezing storms, Covid… they have taken their toll. We are so appreciative and grateful for your business and your loyalty.  Thank You for supporting us the past 25 years and seven months!

With Lots of Love, Connie, Tina, Ashley, Hailey, Pam, Thomas, Losha, Hailey, Lisa and Teller.

What I Heard This Week 10-19-2023

What I Heard This Week October 18, 2023

According to folklore, Farmers’ Almanac, and Melissa Bunker aka The Persimmon Lady (who reads persimmons and has been making predictions for years); if you split open the seeds of locally grown persimmon fruit slice through the seed, look at the pattern that the seed makes inside, it will tell you everything you need to know to predict the winter. Now, mind you, The Persimmon Lady lives in North Carolina not Texas, but her prediction is that 2023-2024 will be very cold and bitter. To make a persimmon forecast, one source said to take 10 persimmons, split the seeds and see what pattern you find the most of. A fork shape indicates a mild winter, a spoon shape stands for snow that will need shoveling, and a knife shape means a bitter cold icy winter where wind will cut you like a knife. Or you can just watch your local weather or the weather app on your phone.

Thou shall not try me. Mom 24:7

National Make a Dog’s Day is October 22nd. Hmmm. What can you do? Adopt a dog. Take a dog walking at local shelters or donate supplies. Visit a dog park with your own pooch or take her on an extra lap around the block, or just spend time with the loving animal that creates so much happiness throughout the year.

Don’t Drink and Drive! Your dog would never understand why you didn’t come home.

Speaking of man’s best friend, I just received the nicest newsletter from the SPCA along with pictures of some of the sweet babies that were loved, are now healthy and were adopted over the summer. They welcomed so many incredible animals into the shelter. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, 360 dogs and 480 cats came into their care – that’s a total of 840 animals – (wow), and 794 animals were adopted, along with vaccinating hundreds of pets in our community. Support them when you can. Spay and neuter.

The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in Dolly Parton as their Thanksgiving Day halftime show. Dallas will play the Washington Commanders. WOW. Janet Jackson is returning to Houston on December 1st, to celebrate AIDS Day at NRG Arena. Houston native Debbie Allen who starred with Jackson in Fame, will speak. Actor Blair Underwood will receive the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

When Teller and I opened our first fortune cookie this weekend, it was blank. Hmmm. No fortune. I didn’t take it personally. The second cookie said, “Some folks dream of fortune, others dream of cookies.” Teller says he dreams of dog biscuits.

The Brazoria County Beekeepers Association presents their Bee Expo at Wild Peach Market 21155 North Hwy 36 Brazoria, Sat. October 28th from 5:30 – 9:30PM. Yes, it’s Saturday evening now that the weather is cooler. There will be live music and food, shopping, local honey, baked goods, desserts, décor, kid crafts, classes, an observation hive, face-painting and more. Vendor space available. For further info: 979-480-3223 or facebook.com/WildPeachMarket. Costumes are welcome! BEE there. I went to the most fun class on mushrooms at this place last Saturday morning. I’ll tell you all about it next week. I’m growing two containers of mushrooms in my kitchen right now and should see results beginning in about 10-days.

Sir Ian Wilmut, British embryologist best known as the leader of the research group that in 1996 first cloned a mammal from an adult somatic cell, a lamb named Dolly, who died of a respiratory disease in 2003. In 1966, Wilmut spent eight weeks working in the laboratory of Christopher Polge, who is credited with developing the technique of cryopreservation in 1949. The following year Wilmut joined Polge’s laboratory to undertake a PhD with a thesis on semen cryopreservation. In 1996, he was the leader of the research group that first cloned a mammal, a lamb named Dolly, who died of a respiratory disease in 2003.

Rudolph Isley, founding member of the Isley Brothers who performed R&B classics, Shout, Twist and Shout, That Lady, It’s Your Thing, Lonely Teardrops, and so much more, died at 84. Rudolph Isley left the group in 1989 to become a Christian minister but was still inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

Suzanne Somers of Three’s Company fame died at 76. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 during a routine mammogram, receiving a lumpectomy and radiation as well as alternative therapies, but continued to battle cancer multiple times throughout her life. She said, “every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down.” If you haven’t made your mammogram appointment, then do it right now!

Nobel prize winning poet Louise Gluck, died at 80. When she received the literature prize in 2020, it was the first time an American poet had been honored since T.S. Eliot in 1948.

Bruce Weaver, the photographer who was able to capture the unbelievable images of space shuttle Challenger breaking apart into smoke and fire after lift-off on January 28, 1986, has died at 77. Eroded O-ring seals in the right booster failed, causing the explosion. In 1986, actual film was still used, and Weaver had not yet filled up 36 frames of his roll while photographing the launch when the Challenger began breaking apart. Other photographers had finished their rolls and needed to rewind before replacement with a new roll.

Joanna Merlin, who created the role of Tzeitel in the original production of Fiddler on the Roof, died at 92.

Piper Laurie, nominated nine times for an Emmy and three times for an Academy Award, best known for Carrie (Sissy Spacek’s ultra-religious mother) and The Hustler (love interest of Paul Newman), died at 91.

Gail O’Neill, supermodel, and journalist, died at 61.

While filling up my car with gas the other day, I could hear the truck beside me topping off his tank. You know, when the pump stops, and you try to get a little bit more in the tank. Klunk. I just read that doing this can damage a piece of your gas tank called the onboard refueling vapor recovery system. This part collects harmful fuel vapors and emits them into the outside air. It can cost several hundred dollars to repair this part. Gas also needs room to expand and packing the tank with gas prevents it from expanding. FYI.

They say everything looks better with odd numbers of things. But sometimes I put even numbers – just to upset the critics.” Bob Ross

A 91-year-old Wisconsin man, tired of retirement, opened a new barber shop called Bob’s Old Fashioned Barber Shop. Bob Rohloff said he has followed in his father’s footsteps and had been cutting hair since 1948, while he was still in high school. He said that he doesn’t have arthritis, so why not continue to work… but he didn’t tell his family what he was doing because they wouldn’t have understood. (Everyone is going to get old, but you don’t have to act old…)

This week was my regularly scheduled dental appointment. I love going for cleanings. My hygienist is going to become a first-time grandmother, so we discussed grandma names. Just in case you’re in need of a cool name, a recent survey says the most-used alternate names for grandmother or grandma are Gigi, Nana, Mimi, Gran, Bibi, & Momo. The most used-alternate names for Grandfather or Grandpa are Poppy, Pops, Papi, G-Pa, GranDude, & Papa.

There is a disturbance in the Atlantic, named at this time AL94, that the National Hurricane Center is monitoring. Hurricane season ends November 30th but that doesn’t really matter because all the rules have changed on what the weather is going to do.

Bobby Flay has restaurants, cookbooks, television shows, and surprise, a premium cat food brand Made by Nacho, named after his Maine Coon, Nacho and sister, Stella. Nine-year-old Nacho died this week. My cats love this brand, so I mix it with the stuff they’re not so fond of…  Reportedly, prosecutors are planning to recharge Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter over the fatal shooting on the 2021 movie set of Rust ...  The Los Angeles Olympic Committee has released new sports for the 2028 games, Baseball/Softball, Flag Football, Lacrosse, Squash, & Cricket… The state of Arkansas ordered Chinese owned company, Syngenta, to sell 160 acres of farmland in the U.S. that they own, within two years. The same company owns about 1,500 acres of U.S. agricultural land for research, development and regulatory trials on products used by U.S. farmers. Arkansas also fined Syngenta $280,000 for failure to report foreign ownership in a timely manner. Sigh… Vladimir Putin‘s arrival in Beijing this week received the red-carpet treatment. The visit was Putin’s first trip outside countries of the former Soviet Union since the International Criminal Court, of which China is not a member, issued a warrant for his arrest in March … Apple has unveiled a brand-new affordable third-gen Apple Pencil that costs $79 and has a USC-C port.

So far, we have 34 Garage Sales listed on page 6. It should be a great weekend for shopping! Thanks for reading us this week. We appreciate you.

What I Heard This Week 12-01-2022

What I Heard This Week November 30, 2022

Today I walked into my office and found the evil ants… again. So, I put out a little ant appetizer, then watched them march from all over the office to devour it. The ants will be gone in the morning; I will vacuum, and all will be well. Then I read this story about a man in India sitting down to a dinner that his wife had just prepared and found ants in his rice, so he demanded an explanation. An altercation occurred and she strangled him with her scarf. Gentlemen, if you find any ants in your rice, first off, hide all the scarves, then try Terro Ant Bait before you mention anything at all to your partner.

The ants and the bees are, in many ways, far more intelligent and ingenious; they manage their government with vastly less quarreling, wastefulness and imbecility.  H. L. Mencken

Most of us know that we need to minimize our exposure to Teflon. Yeesss, you do. I was texting a friend today about the carbon steel pan that I just ordered for my son for Christmas. My son’s request. He wants a carbon steel pan, an air-fryer, and boots. My own carbon-steel pan is fantastic. I seasoned it once per the instructions it came with. Just like an iron skillet except you use salt and high heat, and I haven’t had to season it again in the past year and half. Nothing really sticks. I wash it out by hand each time I use it using just a little soap and a swish of a sink brush, then dry it out with paper towels. So easy. It’s light weight (that was so important to me) and I wouldn’t trade it. So, if you’re looking for a great Christmas gift… there you go. Just like in a restaurant, so don’t expect it to be pretty and shiny, but it won’t expose you to health issues like testicular cancer, low birth weight, infertility, liver disease, kidney issues and thyroid disorders. Look up Teflon Coating Health Risks.

Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason. Mark Twain

General Motors revealed a new electric SUV that is expected to be the cheapest compact electric SUV on the market. The Chevrolet Equinox EV will have a starting price around $30,000 which will make it among the cheapest electric vehicles of its kind. The average electric vehicle available today has a base sticker price of about $47,500, according to Edmunds.com.

Experts estimate you can reduce up to 15% of electricity used by your refrigerator by cleaning off the dust. When I read this, I immediately pulled the front panel off my kitchen fridge, and I was surprised to learn that I’m a super nasty person. Most of the time I only look behind my old appliances when they have to install a new appliance, or when I move to another house. There before me the nicest collection of dog hair, cat hair, dust, and dog & cat treats, but it’s clean now. Dust buildup makes the fridge use more energy to cool your food. In case you missed it, November 15th was National Clean Out Your Fridge Day, just in case you need more encouragement to get out the Windex and paper towels.

The great thing about getting older is that you don’t lose all the other ages you’ve been. Madeleine L’Engle

Sigh. A Florida woman (yep, Florida again) has filed a lawsuit (asking for up to $5 million) against Kraft Heinz’s for their Velveeta Shells & Cheese instant macaroni product, saying that it is not the easy, cheesy macaroni that it is advertised as. It takes too much time and too many steps to prepare. If you include ripping off the lid, adding water, and stirring in the prepackaged cheese sauce, then it takes longer than the 3-1/2 minutes advertised as the cooking time in the microwave. I say, what kind of attorney would take on a case like this. Then I answer myself with, “the kind of attorney that you probably wouldn’t want to represent you.”

Singer and actor Irene Cara, best known as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 musical Fame, and was the voice behind Flashback… What a Feeling, which she co-wrote, has died at 63. Actor Clarence Gilyard of Walker, Texas Ranger, died at 66. French-American actor Robert Clary died at 96. He was a survivor of the Nazi death camp during WWII. What I found most interesting was that he was most famous for his role as a feisty prisoner of war Corporal Louis LeBeau in the unlikely 1960s sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. Before 1980, he remained silent about his true wartime experiences. He also had recurring roles in the soap operas Days of Our Lives, and The Bold and the Beautiful, along with live theater performances and was a wonderful artist.

Businessman and politician, governor of Kentucky (1979 – 1983) John Y. Brown Jr., died at 88 from complications of Covid. Brown established Kentucky Fried Chicken as a worldwide name and global corporation after he bought it from Harland Sanders in 1964. He also owned three basketball clubs, including the Boston Celtics. In 2009, Harvard Business School honored Brown as one of the top American Business Leaders of 20th century, along with Ray Kroc, Sam Walton, Walt Disney, and Bill Gates. Brown married three times, once to former Miss America Phyllis George and once to a former Mrs. America.

Lauri Cherian is a local actor, teacher, volunteer, mother, wife, great friend, and is now a writer of poetry. Lauri will be holding a poetry reading open to the public at the Lake Jackson Library on Friday, December 2nd from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Congratulations Lauri and thank you for your hard work in the kitchen at Madrigal Feast. Madrigal Feast is now at The Center for the Arts and Sciences. The meal, dessert, and show are absolutely fantastic. You should try to come. It’s a great memorable way to start the Season. 979-265-7661. A Night of Worship W/ Justin Gambino + Friends is planned for Saturday, December 10th at 5pm, at the Brazoria County Courthouse. Everyone loves Justin. Congratulations Brazoswood Water Polo teams, (boys earned in the very first Class UIL 6A State Championship and the girls are the Texas UIL 6A State Runner-Up). Most of all, congratulations to Coach Robert Brown, the man who worked so hard in past years for my own child, for my friend’s children, and for continuing his tradition of being one of the most beloved and respected coaches at BISD. Hard-working assistant coach is Kiel Haner.

A new Alzheimer’s drug shows promise for slowing the disease but may contain significant risks such as brain bleeds, swelling and other side effects. A Buddhist temple in central Thailand has been left without a single monk when they all tested positive for methamphetamine. Oh, dear. Two never-before seen ‘alien’ minerals were found in a 2.5-ounce slice of a gigantic meteorite weighing 16.5 tons, discovered in 2020. Meteorites are meteors that survive traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere and land on the ground. A third mineral may have been identified, but it is still being reviewed. What will they find if they look through all 16.5 tons?

This one is fun. A man posted a TikTok video that showed him cutting off the zip-ties where a neighbor had attached her snow fence to the man’s guttering on his house. The next video he posted said, Update: this morning the neighbor put these two things in her window facing our house where the snow fence is. People responded saying that the two objects were motion detectors. Along with this information came ideas and encouragement to trigger the motion detectors 100% of the time… so the words I should use would be constant motion. Hmmm. How about a bird feeder that you never let go empty. How about a perpetual motion waving cat or an inflatable lawn decoration, then pray for wind. It’s my new favorite show. Who is bringing the popcorn?

A 1969 orange Dodge Charger, one of four built and previously owned by John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, recently sold at auction for $194,400. A Harley-Davidson FLH Electra-Glide motorcycle purchased by Marlon Brando in 1970, just sold for $216,000. Do you remember the Gianni Versace dress that Princess Diana wore in a photo shoot in 1991, that was used on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Tribute to a Princess issue in 1997. It was figure-hugging shimmering blue-green, and her hair was slicked back where it looked almost wet. Well, that dress just sold for $172,800.  A Marilyn Monroe worn dress from her final film in 1962, Something’s Got to Give, recently sold for $313,200. The figure-hugging silk crepe dress is printed with scattered painterly roses in shades of persimmon and deep cherry with a plunging V back. Very pretty.

Teller the Wonder Dog loves to chew on things, so I bought some bones with yummy centers. You know, very expensive fake marrow. He loved them, but I discovered that they shed crumbs of fake marrow and attracted many of our very dependable office ants, so I decided to take the bones to the SPCA for the outside dogs to chew on. Teller just doesn’t go outside during the day unless he is on a leash, so I loaded up the bones in a plastic bag with Teller very curiously watching me as I took them to the car, constantly giving me the look that was supposed to remind me that they belonged to HIM. Just imagine the longing look on a baby’s face when you take away their pacifier or bottle for the last time. That’s the look that was on his sweet little face when we dropped the bag off at the door of the SPCA. I had rolled down the window on his side and he kept looking back at the bones, then looking back at me like saying, “Wait, you forgot something, the bones, you forgot MY bones.” They grow up so fast.

Tom Cruise is set to become the first actor to shoot a movie in outer space. Yep. Plans are to take a rocket up to the Space Station and shoot part of a movie, but most of it would be shot on Earth. Does Tom realize that he just turned 60? I bet it’s hard to get him insured on a set.  James Cameron’s sequel to Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, is expected to be a huge box office hit. It opens on December 16th. Avatar made history 13 years ago by becoming the top-grossing film of all time with $2.92 BILLION in ticket sales. The Way of Water is three hours and 14 minutes long. It stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang. Newcomers are Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet. I just loved the first Avatar. Taylor Lautner is an actor best known for playing shapeshifter Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga film series. He just married and his new wife, also named Taylor, was Team Edward before they started dating, not Team Jacob. Silly girl.

In a symbolic break from the Middle Ages, Camilla, Queen Consort, has dispensed with the title of ladies-in-waiting, instead appointing a group of five personal assistants who will be known as Queen’s Companions. Queen Elizabeth’s remaining ladies-in-waiting will stay on, helping King Charles host events at Buckingham Palace. They will now be called “ladies of the household.” A name all working women share. Have a great shopping week. Remember, memories are the best gift.

Lost Cat

Much Ado About Nothing August 3, 2017

Buster Ciampi

Much Ado About Nothing by Jan Ciampi

Filling in this week for Jean Ciampi who thinks it’s too stinkin’ hot to work is Guest Columnist Buster. A distinguished and grateful alumni of the Brazoria County SPCA, Buster currently advocates for animal rights (with the exclusion of squirrels because he believes they get exactly what they deserve).

Recently, I was out patrolling the neighborhood as any good and respectable dog does, sniffing mailboxes, trees, bushes. You know, checking the pee mail. That’s when I saw that someone had stuck a paper on a pole with the picture of a lost cat and the ridiculous claim of a $500 reward. My first thought was that this cat must have swallowed an expensive pair of diamond earrings before it ran away. Because unless the cat is actually a dog, there’s no cat worth that!

Who would pay $500 to have a cat given back? Just speaking from the dog’s perspective, I’d pay twice that for someone to load up a whole litter of cats and haul them off. But that’s just me and I’m a dog. Besides, why would you want a cat that, at best, has zero sense of loyalty and, at worst, has a miserable sense of direction? I’m thinking this cat got fed up with that family and moved in with someone on the other side of the neighborhood that has a bigger food bowl. Face it, that’s how cats are.

Of course, there’s a family that’s obviously upset. No one wants to see a helpless animal suffer – even if that helpless animal is a human. Unfortunately, there are just misguided people who actually prefer cats to having a dog. Yes, that’s stupid and those people should have their trash dumped over and strewn across their front yard to mark them as stupid. But regardless of that, this family, sadly, has an attachment to the cat that probably hasn’t thought about them even once. Because, well, that’s how cats are.

The kindest thing to do in this situation, in my humble dog opinion, would be to gently let these caring though confused people know that, for a mere fraction of that reward, they could adopt a really nice, loyal dog who would be smart enough not to run away and be their lifelong best friend. It may just be time to puppy up!

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
