What I Heard This Week! 06-10-2021

What I Heard This Week June 10, 2021

Serendipity. Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you’ve found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for. Lawrence Block

The Source Weekly has some of the sweetest, kindest, most delightful customers and readers you can imagine. (In all honesty, there are also some real toots, impatient, belligerent, and demanding, but enough about them.) One of our more charming readers sent me this story, and I have her permission to share it, word for word, with you today. Enjoy.

“My husband and I have two pecan trees in our backyard. Last summer, on a clear, sunny day, one of the trees dropped a limb. A very large limb. There wasn’t bad weather, the limb wasn’t bug-infested, it just fell off. It missed the fence and all the power lines, so it did no damage. My husband got busy over the next few days cutting it up into firewood. Even had to buy a new chainsaw as the one he had wasn’t up to the job. He couldn’t have told you why he was so gung-ho to get it cut up, but he just felt he had to take care of it.

We haven’t used our fireplace for its intended purpose in many years, so a decision had to be made about what to do with all that wood. He decided he’d take it to his sister in San Antonio. His sister lives with their 93-year-old father, and our daughter lives there, as well. Then over the next several months, he made three trips, hauling that wood in our SUV. His sister joked about what she was going to do with all that wood. They hadn’t used their fireplace more than a few times the past several winters.

Then came the winter of 2021. The freezing temps hit them before we got it and they lost power in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. With it, they lost heat and the ability to cook. And suddenly, they were dependent on the fireplace for heat and the ability to prepare hot food. My father-in-law is in ill health and has dementia, and they considered taking him to a hospital to ride out the weather, but the roads were too icy to make the trip into town. Without the wood from our tree, who knows what they would have done.

Being 200 miles away and dealing with our own freezing weather and power outage, we would have been unable to help them in any way, but because our perfectly healthy tree dropped a perfectly healthy limb in the summer, giving us time to cut it up and move it to San Antonio, a bad situation was prevented from becoming tragic.

Serendipity? Perhaps, but I prefer to think, ‘the Lord moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform’.”
– Tharon Tanner

SerendipityYou don’t have to understand it, you just have to have faith.

An Arkansas man arrested and charged in connection with the Capitol attack, is offering to let you help him financially to support his legal fight. In exchange for sending him just $100 or more, Richard “Bigo” Barnett will send you an autographed picture of him sitting with his feet propped on Nancy Pelosi’s desk. In addition to smiling for the picture, he carried a stun gun into the Capitol and later showed off a piece of stolen mail to reporters. Hmmm. But it is unclear whether he can actually sell the photo of himself because it was taken by a photographer, and the companies that the news photographers work for actually control copyright to their work.

Internet Explorer debuted 26 years ago, in 1995, as part of Windows 95 and we loved it. At its peak in 2002, it had 95% of the browser market. Now it is about 5%, so Microsoft is officially getting rid of Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022. In the obit, Microsoft says it is slow, no longer practical for, or compatible with many modern web tasks and is far less secure than modern browsers. RIP. We sure enjoyed our time together.

Doogie Howser, M.D. Singer Gino Vannelli is 69.I loved the Black Cars album. Vannelli and his brother moved to LA in ‘72. Desperate and broke, they waited for hours in the parking lot outside A&M Studios, hoping to get a record deal. When Herb Alpert, the co-owner of A&M Records, finally emerged, Vannelli ran toward him, handing him a demo tape while being chased by security guards.  Alpert signed Vannelli and released their debut album, Crazy Life, in the summer of ‘73.

Clarence Williams III, best known as Linc Hayes on TV’s Mod Squad, and Prince’s father in the movie Purple Rain, died at 81 of colon cancer. Eric Carle, who illustrated more than 70 children’s books over his long career but was best known for 1969’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, died at 91. He was one of my children’s favorite from a very early age. Felix Silla, a trained circus performer best known for portraying tiny Addams Family member Cousin Itt, died at 84 of pancreatic cancer.

Mattel, home to the ever-so-famous Barbie, Matchbox and MEGA toys, needs your old toys. The 76-year-old toy company has launched a pilot program to recover and recycle materials in certain old toys and make them into future Mattel products, creating circular sustainability. You know, fun coming full circle. The toy take back program is called Mattel PlayBack and will enable families to extend the life of their Mattel toys once they are finished playing with them. To print out a free shipping label, visit Mattel.com/PlayBack. They will sort, separate, process, recycle or down cycle into other plastic products, or convert from waste to energy. CNN reported, “that of all the plastic ever created, only 9 percent has been recycled. The majority ends up in landfills or in the natural environment like the ocean, where they can take hundreds of years or longer to break down.” Unfortunately, plastic toys are no different. A recent study found that LEGO bricks, which are made of plastic, can survive up to 1,300 years in the ocean. In that time, they cause much harm to marine life and fragile ecosystems.

Food: Burger King is bringing back crown-shaped chicken nuggets after a 10-year absence, the latest nostalgia play in the fiercely competitive fast-food industry. Those must come from Sussex chickens.

My Harley-riding brother sent me this: Motorcycles are vital for survival. Dinosaurs didn’t have them and look how that turned out. I am still wondering how to respond.

Monarch sequoia trees can live up to 3,000 years, are fire-adapted, having survived dozens of fires in their lifetimes, but not any like this fire. It was really bad for our world. The 2020 Castle Fire was probably the most destructive fire in 700 years, destroying between 7,500 to 10,000 monarch sequoias, which is about 10% to 14% of the world’s entire mature giant sequoia population. The land looks like the surface of the moon in pictures I saw. Just dust. The redwood forests are so efficient in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, providing critical wildlife habitat, and watershed protection for farmers and communities. Makes you want to cry. Conditions in the park remain so dry that a sequoia tree was discovered still burning in a remote area of the forest last month.

Joanna Gaines says that when Chip dies, she will have the number 16 tattooed on her wrist in honor of her husband. Or maybe she will do a squirrel…she is so funny. No. 16 is his lucky number, and the name of the new men’s store at the Silos. The Silos is expanding from 2-acres to more than 5-acres, a full city block. They will have Magnolia Market, the Silos Baking Co., Magnolia Table restaurant, the Seed & Supply Garden store, and a food truck park. They will add the Magnolia Press coffee shop, a furniture showroom, a Wiffle ball field, a historic church that the couple relocated to the site, and a miniature village of six new themed shops carrying everything from leather goods to women’s clothing and children’s toys. Joanna says that the next project is the silos themselves and then she is finished with that area. The Silos? I like them just the rusty way they are. There is also a hotel makeover in the works. The launch of the TV channel will be pushed to January 2022 after extensive Covid-19 related production delays on its slate of new series. They are launching Magnolia app on July 15, 2021, that will offer the complete first seasons of Fixer Upper: Welcome Home and Magnolia Table, the complete Fixer Upper library, and complete seasons of new shows, including Growing Floret, The Lost Kitchen, Homegrown, Family Dinner and Restoration Road with Clint Harp. Oh, and their 16-year-old son Drake, got his driver’s license. Whew. Looks like they have been really busy.

Since reminding you of really good things never seems to happen enough, I will tell you again that seniors, age 65 and older, are eligible to receive a discount on their Lake Jackson water bill equal to 40% of the base water and sewer bill. There is a form available at the water department. Bring your driver’s license for verification. What a deal. Another little something to help us get excited about aging. Right.

A 37-year-old woman has been charged with a 2018 murder, after fatally poisoning her 62-year-old friend by filling her water bottle with six bottles of Visine. She also defrauded her of nearly $300,000 which she spent on gambling, expensive gifts, and spa treatments for friends and acquaintances. Now the suspect is saying that she actually helped the woman die by suicide. In 2020, a SC woman pleaded guilty after she gave her husband drinks laced with eye drops that she fed him over the course of three consecutive days. In 2019, a paramedic in NC, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after an autopsy determined his wife, Stacy, was poisoned by eye drops. Eye drops, more than something just to get the red out!

It is called Joints for Jabs and will run until July 12. Washington State will now allow adults, 21 and older, to have one free pre-rolled marijuana joint with their first or second vaccine shot. A Dutch court has ruled that Shell must step up its climate change effort and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030. Trump has reportedly been telling people that he is going to be President again in August. Hmmm. Coup? Mutiny? The Food and Drug Administration approved a new drug for Alzheimer’s disease, the first such approval the agency has made since 2003.After arresting a flower delivery driver for DUI on Mother’s Day, California police stepped up and finished delivering the remaining arrangements. They say they hoped they got all the flowers to their destinations on time, because everybody in the world’s got a mom.

Most everyone knows that the creator of Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hat was Halston. Now, Netflix is streaming a drama about the most important American couturier of the 70’s as he lost artistic control of his name, did drugs, and partied too much. But let me tell you, the fashion in this show is fabulous, and they show it off perfectly. It is definitely an adult watch that took weeks to finish because the only time I watch is while I cook, but worth it just to see his clothing and the process of building his fashion house.

Almost every day, I bring my lunch. Today I had a beautifully ripened avocado that dropped out of my purse and on the sidewalk, on the way into the office. So, now I am having guacamole for lunch with my salmon salad. 😊 I know it is going to be a good day because I found $40 when I put my skirt on this morning. Hmmm. I may even consider buying a lottery ticket. Have a great week and as always, thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to read us.

What I Heard This Week! 06-03-2021

What I Heard This Week June 3, 2021

In 2019, Jeffrey Epstein died in prison after being found unresponsive, hanging in his jail cell about a month after his arrest on sex-trafficking charges. Now two prison guards have admitted they did not make the required checks, and falsified records to make it seem as if they had conducted the required checks, when in fact video coverage showed that Epstein had been left unwatched for eight hours, just 15 feet away from his cell. On that night, the guards shopped for furniture and motorcycles online, then napped. Both guards have cut a deal to avoid jail time, will undergo supervised release, and will be required to complete 100 hours of community service. Wow. That sounds like how they penalize teenagers when they drive too fast. There is still speculation that Epstein died due to strangulation instead of suicidal hanging, and since the two cameras in front of Epstein’s cell reportedly malfunctioned on the night of his death, we may not ever know.

First day of summer is June 20th. Yikes.

Royal Caribbean is the first cruise line to receive CDC approval for a test sailing in US waters. The cruise line’s Freedom of the Seas ship will be allowed to sail with volunteer passengers. “All volunteers for test cruises must be 18 years of age or older, but passengers aren’t required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, though if they aren’t, they must have written documentation from a health care provider or must self-certify that they aren’t at a heightened risk for COVID-19, according to the CDC. And all must agree to be evaluated for COVID-19 symptoms before embarking, and after disembarking along with an agreement to be tested for COVID-19 three to five days following the cruise.” Sometimes it is simply hard to be a volunteer.

In this country we have two kinds of people: Those who don’t need masks but wear them, and those who need masks but don’t wear them.” Binyamin Appelbaum The New York Times

The Most Magical Place on Earth is Disney World, isn’t it? Have you ever wondered why there are no mosquitoes there? It is, after all, in the middle of a swamp in Florida. They have a mosquito surveillance program that set carbon dioxide traps everywhere (that is one reason they like you, they are attracted to your breath, aka carbon dioxide), then freeze and analyze the insects, so they can determine the best way to eradicate them. Chickens. There are chickens living in coops all over Disney World. If they pick up the West Nile virus, the Disney team knows exactly where in the park it came from so they can get on it. Disney World. Another word for utopia.

Even though there are days I wish I could change some things that happened in the past, there is a reason the rearview mirror is so small, and the windshield is so big… where you’re headed is much more important than what you’ve left behind.

Mexico’s Andrea Meza was recently crowned Miss Universe, with Miss Brazil as first runner-up and Miss Peru as second runner-up. The contest was delayed last year due to Covid. Postage is going up to 58cents. Before you start screaming and hollering about it, just think about the fact that it costs ONLY 58 cents to mail something from here to New York or Seattle, or even California. That still seems cheap to me. Would you deliver something to even Angleton or Pearland for 58 cents? No, you would not. Darwin’s Arch, the famous natural rock formation off the coast of the Galapagos Islands, has taken on a new shape as two pillars, when the arch collapsed into the sea due to erosion. Texas Gulf Bank is excited to announce their recent groundbreaking for a brand-new building at 1400 Brazosport Boulevard, Freeport location. Completion for the branch is expected by year-end and Irene Ocañas, that we all know and love, will remain as Branch Manager and Lender.

Actress Adrienne Barbeau of Maude is 76.Talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz is 61.Actor Richard Thomas is 70.

Singer B.J. Thomas, 78, died of lung cancer. I remember watching the scene on the bike in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with the stunning Katherine Ross, and Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head playing in the background, thinking what a truly, perfect scene it was. What beautiful songs he left for us. Gavin MacLeod, the actor who starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and captained The Love Boat, has died at the age of 90.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly banned Chinese-made medicines at major hospitals in the country’s capital. This follows the death of a top-ranking government official who died earlier this month after receiving a dose of cocarboxylase, a Chinese-produced medicine typically used to treat fatigue. The ban includes all Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccines with research activities now focusing on producing the country’s own coronavirus vaccine.

The one-child policy was a program that was implemented nationwide by the Chinese government in 1979, in order to limit most Chinese families to one child each. The policy was enacted to address the growth rate of China ’s population, which government viewed as being too high. Couples who violated the one-child policy faced a variety of punishments; fines and the loss of employment, to forced abortions. In 2015, China ended the decades-long one-child policy, allowing couples to have two children. Now confronted with aging population, China is now allowing couples to have three children. It sounds like most couples have not responded to this offer in a positive way.

Food: There is a Bourbon Bacon Cheeseburger at Wendy’s now. The flyer has been staring at me from my desk for the past week. Oh, my, it looks good. Add a Dr. Pepper and you would have a feast. Wendy’s also has something called Frosty-Ccino. It is an iced coffee with Frosty creamer. Vanilla or Chocolate. A better idea would have been to offer a coffee-flavored Frosty. Just saying. Burger King is now offering frozen strawberry lemonade for $1.00. Ends on June 20, or while supplies last. There is a new Mexican restaurant close by, so one evening I ordered a Campechana (Mexican seafood cocktail) but was disappointed to find that they do not serve theirs with shrimp. One morning, my daughter and I tried Bodega downtown LJ. We had been told by many that the French toast was the best. We had four, right off the grill, pieces of the best… brioche bread lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar, a pile of cinnamon whipped cream, two slices of bacon cooked to perfection, fruit salad that tasted like someone actually cut up the fruit, slices of fresh banana, and a handful of walnuts, all beautifully placed on a paper lined tray, along with a little side of maple syrup. The avocado toast is yummy too. Their sandwiches are beauties, wine, and craft beer selection outstanding, and killer Crème Brulee. Plus, it is a market, so don’t forget to pick up toilet paper when you go shop for beer. 5 Circle Way.

It’s official. 50% of American adults are now vaccinated. Companies are still finding new ways to reward vaccinated customers. Krispy Kreme– a free glazed doughnut to anyone who flashes their vaccine card. MaineL.L. Bean gift certificates, and free fishing and hunting licenses. Now United Airlines is offering customers a chance to win free flights for a whole year. And they serve alcohol on flights. See below.

Airlines have reported around 2,500 incidents of bad behavior to the FAA so far this year. Most of the complaints involved unruly passengers that do not want to wear a mask, but not all. A Southwest Airlines passenger on a flight from Sacramento to San Diego was arrested and charged with assault, after she punched a flight attendant that resulted in injuries to her face and a loss of two teeth. A passenger on a Delta Air Lines flight from Honolulu to Seattle who tried to open the cockpit door and assaulted a flight attendant was fined $52,000. A JetBlue passenger traveling from Ft. Lauderdale to Las Vegas who brought his own alcohol onboard, refused to stop drinking it, and kept removing a facemask, also faced an FAA fine: $18,500. So, it may be difficult to find alcohol on Southwest and American Airlines flights now because they are holding off on resuming alcoholic beverage services right now because of this situation, but if you just cannot fly without alcohol, then try Delta or United.

Coronavirus variants will now be referred to by letters of the Greek alphabet instead of where they were first discovered, in an effort to prevent the stigmatization of entire communities.

The woman who falsely told police that a bird-watcher threatened her in NYC Central Park, has sued her former employer, saying they fired her without doing a fair investigation, therefore falsely portraying her as racist. She also said that their actions after the encounter substantially harmed her career and caused such severe emotional distress that she became suicidal. The video of the incident showing her calling the police saying, “There’s an African-American man threatening my life.” He was actually asking her to follow park rules and leash her dog, so he could bird watch. The video has been seen on Twitter more than 45 million times. She was dubbed the Central Park Karen which was not a compliment. Evidently there is an ongoing feud between dog owners that do not leash, and birdwatchers in the park.

Not to brag, but I used hand soap before it was trending.

Lake Jackson Historical Museum: Attention all chefs, caterers, grillers, family cooks, and wannabees. Apron Strings: Ties to the Past is coming to the History Museum June 16th – Aug. 11th. In this exhibit, aprons dating back to the early 1900s through present day will be on display. As a group, they chronicle changing attitudes toward women and domestic work. A wide range of design and craft techniques are highlighted.  The exhibit is organized into thematic groups focusing on design, historical context, use, decoration, and materials. Come visit, select one to try on, and take a selfie. I like it.

With India’s health care system failing because of the world’s worst coronavirus outbreak, illegal markets for hospital beds, oxygen, funeral services, and more have emerged. One article called them pandemic profiteers, preying on desperation and grief of families with members literally gasping for air. One scam showed a company repainting fire extinguishers and selling them as oxygen canisters. The less-sturdy fire extinguishers will explode if filled with high-pressure oxygen. One group was stealing used funeral shrouds from bodies and selling them as new. Sad.

A Michigan man said a store clerk had to talk him into buying the scratch-off lottery ticket that earned him a $300,000 jackpot. The clerk suggested a certain game because it was pretty simple to play and had been lucky lately. He told her that he didn’t play often. Sigh. Thanks for reading us this week. What I Heard This Week! 05-27-2021

What I Heard This Week May 27, 2021

The biggest insect emergence on the planet.  This is the short story. Many parts of the Midwest and eastern US will experience a 17-year Brood X Cicada emergence in May and June of 2021. Cicadas (suh-kaa-duh) are harmless to humans, arrive in huge numbers in parks, wooded areas, and neighborhoods, but only when the ground warms to 64 degrees. The cicada live underground for 17 years, emerging near the end of their life cycle. When they arrive in abundance, they fly, land, and crawl everywhere, including on a few humans. Just imagine one stuck in your hair. As they emerge from the ground, they head for something upright like trees, where they molt, assume adult wings, and become the greatest of yummy meals for birds, squirrels, and other wildlife.  The males that are left create a very loud noise (often up around 100 decibels), to attract a mate; loud because the males try to drown out all their rival’s songs. Then they mate. Within hours, the females lay as many as 400-600 eggs in small tree branches and the trunks of trees. Males can mate several times, but the female usually mates only once. (Where have I heard that before?) The eggs hatch in 6 to 10 weeks, then they fall to the ground and burrow into the soil, not to be seen again here until 2038. The adult cicada lives for two to four weeks longer, then dies. Some people say that if you deep-fry them like a potato chip, then smother them in salt and spices, they are delicious to eat. You must also consume at least 4 ounces of alcohol rapidly.

The New York Post stated that Martha Stewart has a ‘muster’ of 16 beautiful peacocks on her property. Martha shot back that this is ‘fake news’ since she actually owns 21 of the glorious birds. On her farm she has a menagerie of animals, including Friesian horses, canaries, geese, dogs, donkeys, and chickens.

George Strait will make his return to the stage to close out the 90th anniversary of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The King of Country Music is set to make his 31st RodeoHouston appearance during a special, concert-only event Sunday, March 20, 2022. Tickets for this performance will go on sale to the public Thursday, June 24, with a limit of four tickets per person. Tickets will be available at rodeohouston.com.

For those of you that missed Wednesday’s Super Flower Blood Moon eclipse (it was a full moon, a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse on the same night – a rare lunar trifecta), do not despair, you will be able to catch another eclipse on the night of November 18 to 19. Only the thinnest little, tiny sliver of the moon will remain, but it will be very much like a total eclipse.

Adam & Eve. First ones to ignore Apple terms and conditions.

With all the rain, my tomatoes plants are growing like crazy, but the ants are also looking for high ground. I was staking plants last week and got into an ant bed several times. My ankles and wrists look pretty bad right now but would have been worse, had I not rubbed toothpaste on most of the bites when I came inside. I was the kid that always had an ant farm while growing up, so I understand that ants do so much good in a garden to aerate soil, pollinate, and control pests. Typically, I just try to stay out of their way, but enough is enough. So, I Googledhow to get rid of ants in the garden naturally” and of course, all the common suggestions that I have tried in the past, came up. Cinnamon or cayenne pepper around your plants, diatomaceous earth, brewed coffee grounds, boric acid & sugar traps, and boiling water. I have tried them all, but one method was new to me. “Distribute artificial sweetener near the ants.” Reportedly this is fatal to ants. Hmmm. Don’t you think we might want to reconsider before adding this stuff to our coffee and tea every day? I will let you know.  Sweet’ N Low, here I come.

Do you know someone who is eligible for a vaccine but does not have internet access? Please let them know they can call (833) 832-7067 for referral to a local vaccine provider.

Johnny Crawford, one of the original Mouseketeers, died at 75. He had Alzheimer’s and had contracted both COVID-19 and pneumonia. He was best known as playing Mark McCain on The Rifleman for 5-seasons, which earned him Emmy nomination for best supporting actor at age 13. Samuel E. Wright, the voice of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid movie, died at 74. He was a seasoned Broadway actor but also played the purple bunch-of-grapes character in commercials for Fruit of the Loom underwear. Former Republican Sen. John Warner, who represented Virginia in the US Senate for three decades and was widely respected for his views on military affairs, died at 94. He was married and divorced from Elizabeth Taylor, remaining friends until her death in 2011.

Hurricane season officially starts June 1st and is expected to be an above average season this year. Subtropical storm Ana, formed in the Atlantic last Saturday and was the first named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. For the seventh year in a row, there has been a named storm that formed prior to the official start of hurricane season. A tropical disturbance off the coast of Texas resulted in flooding in parts of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, last week. A perfect example of when above average is definitely not a good thing. Heck, I never took down my storm shutters from last year.

Two fishermen spotted a large object floating in North Carolina’s Bogue Inlet between Emerald Isle and Hammocks Beach State Park (aka Bear Island) that turned out to be a very alive black bear. “When we first saw it, we thought it was a log or something floating in the water, but the closer we got, we decided it was some type of animal.” The fishermen were unable to get the struggling bear to turn back towards the mainland because they feared their help was “freaking” out the bear. “A lot of people are wondering why we didn’t try to help, but you just don’t put a wild bear in the boat and drop it off at the island.”

Speed up the ripening process of hard avocados by placing them in a paper bag with bananas. The gases emitted from the bananas will get those avocados soft and ready to use in no time.

You know I take every opportunity to discuss recycling. Yes, it IS work, but it is OUR responsibility. There is only one Earth, and we are leaving an absolute mess for children and grandchildren. I love the Stella Roberts Recycling Center in Pearland that recycles for all Brazoria County. My daughter is now on her way with a car full. Pre-sort clean paper, cardboard, glass, and plastics. No grocery sacks. You can use cardboard boxes, re-usable totes, or tote bags to deliver your recyclables. They ask that you separate colored glass from clear and break down cardboard. It is always best to call before you go, in case they are short-staffed. Current hours Tues. to Sat. 9-1, so, try to get there by 12:45. Stay in your car and get in line prepared to move very quickly, since they unload. There is a donation box if you are feeling courteous, kind, and gracious. Shredding – small fee. I discovered they even accept fluorescent bulbs.  Check website for details. The Earth is a really neat place. Let us work together to keep it that way. Recycle.

Lipstick sales have jumped more than 80% as everyone’s social calendars, meetings, and family events are filling back up. Federal officials from the US Secret Service have helped recover $2 billion in fraudulently obtained COVID-19 relief funds. Every new Lamborghini will have an electric motor by the end of 2024. Better get mine ordered fast. 😊 There will be a cat joining the White House soon. It is reported that Major Biden is back and doing fine after a short adjustment, and time-out period. Well, just wait until he hears about THE cat.  Atlantic City 1st quarter casino earnings have more than tripled. The FDA approved the Pfizer and Moderna Vaccines, safe and effective for ages 12 and up.  The world’s largest iceberg just broke off the Antarctica shelf, and measures a whooping 15.5 miles wide, roughly the shape of Manhattan (think ironing board) but about 80 times larger. If this does not scare you, then you are not scare-able. The goal to have at least one COVID vaccine in the arm of 70% of adults by July 4, would sure be nice for those of us that are waiting for the slackers to catch up. Delta Air Lines is requiring new employees to get the Covid-19 vaccine, making it one of the largest US companies to issue a mandate. Many celebrities are investing in a TikTok-like app for kids, called Zigazoo. Oh, good. MGM just sold to Amazon for $8.45 BILLION. That does NOT endear me to Amazon at all.

When I was a kid, people were told to use seat belts, so my mom had them installed in our bronze-colored 1960 Buick Electra. Not everyone shared the same beliefs as my mom. She said that she had a hard time finding someone that would install them, but finally, she was able to drag three kids to Sears & Roebuck to install. That was a few years ago, but I still remember it. My parents absolutely did not have money to spend on seat belts, so to me it said LOVE. In the 60’s, we were told to get a polio vaccine so we wouldn’t contract polio. Measures all meant to save lives, so why do humans challenge everything. There is so much, “I’m in charge now, so you can’t tell me what to do” attitude. In the case of masks and vaccines, objectors are not only putting themselves in harm’s way, but also the people around them. So now, to spur on the American people, they are being bribed, and it seems to be working. The Ohio Lottery is offering 4yr. full-ride scholarships to state colleges. Residents over age 18 will vie for a weekly $1-million prize. Great incentive. Employers are offering cash bonuses, on-site clinics, paid leave, and more. The Navy is including more freedom of movement at port calls and the ending of pre-deployment quarantine. Some Army and Marine Corps bases have begun offering extra days off and reduced restrictions on freedom of movement for service members. Delaware is offering 4-day vacations, scholarships, State Parks passes, tickets, camping, and prize packages along with cash drawings. States are encouraged to use creativity to get it done. It is working but isn’t it a shame that society requires enticement, a buy-out, or gifts in exchange for doing the right thing. We must seem really selfish to countries that have only 2% of the population vaccinated because of vaccine shortages.

Con artists are getting smarter. A woman received a legitimate-looking fraud alert from Chase notifying her of $505 purchase at Walmart. The text message asked for confirmation that the purchase was hers. She texted back that she had no knowledge. Almost immediately, she received a call from a “Chase customer service representative,” that appeared to originate from Chase. The rep needed to secure her checking account and texted her a verification code to make sure she was the account holder. He also shared the last four digits of her SS# which she confirmed. Nothing suspicious. As she spoke with the rep, she opened her banking app and changed her password. The rep knew immediately that it had changed. The rep said he would be sending her a case number by email and hung up abruptly. Within seconds, her husband received a text from their bank notifying him that almost all their money had been transferred elsewhere. $10,000. There is more to this story for next week and it is not good. Enjoy the beautiful sunshine, and please do not forget to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
