What I Heard This Week 01-19-2023

What I Heard This Week January 18, 2023

A Missouri City police officer planning to run for Houston mayor has been charged with domestic violence from two different situations where once she used her department issued baton to beat her boyfriend, and another time she shot him with her department issued taser. Needless to say, it was all caught on camera. Her bond has been set; she cannot have any contact with her boyfriend, cannot possess a firearm and her concealed carry permit has been suspended. Her campaign website said, “As a Police Officer, I have seen the good and bad of our city. I want to suppress crime and ensure that the residents of Houston are safe,” her campaign website said, “I truly stand by my campaign slogan ‘Back the blue but not bullies in blue.’ There is no place for a bully in society and I plan on enforcing that. Our Officers do an amazing job and I want to promote the good deeds of good Officers.” Hmmm. Perhaps the big bully is the problem that she said she planned to correct.

Todd and Julie Chrisley (Chrisley Knows Best) began serving time of their respective prison sentences (Todd – 12 years, Julie – 7 years) for tax fraud. “Over the course of a decade, the defendants defrauded banks out of tens of millions of dollars while evading payment of their federal income taxes,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan. “Their lengthy sentences reflect the magnitude of their criminal scheme and should serve as a warning to others tempted to exploit our nation’s community banking system for unlawful personal gain.” Yikes.

True story. Portland based self-published romance-thriller author Nancy Crampton-Brophy seemed to have what it took to write exciting stories about murder. She just loved it. She wrote about stormy relationships, women who had fantasies about killing their own husbands, even women fleeing their husbands, then faking their own deaths. Oh, dear. In 2022, Nancy Brophy was convicted of murdering her own husband. The crime docu-drama How to Murder Your Husband: The Nancy Brophy Story premiered on Lifetime this week. Cybill Shepherd stars as convicted novelist Nancy Brophy. Steve Guttenberg plays her chef culinary-instructor husband Daniel Brophy, who was discovered dead at the Oregon Culinary Institute, having been shot with a Glock pistol. Nancy had published an online essay in 2011 titled ‘How to Murder Your Husband,’ detailing various discreet methods of killing one’s troublesome partner, but this writing was not permitted as evidence at trial.

Our dog swallowed a bag of Scrabble tiles. The vet is checking him out. No word yet.

What a peculiar story that you probably remember. Married, mother of four, sixth-grade middle school teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau (34), was convicted of having an inappropriate relationship with Vili Fualaau. Her sexual abuse of the child first started when he was just 12 years old. She claimed she didn’t know sex with a 12-year-old was illegal. I should mention that Letourneau had also been his second-grade teacher. (Letourneau’s own dad fathered two children out of wedlock during an affair with his mistress.) She was sentenced to a three-month jail stay, already pregnant with his first child. When she was released, they were caught together again. She went back to jail for seven years, pregnant with #2 child. So, he was a father of two before the age of 15, experienced depression, attempted suicide and alcoholism. His family sued the school district claiming the school and police department had failed to protect him, however the lawsuit was rejected in 2002. Letourneau was released from jail when Fualaau was 21. They petitioned the court, married and their two daughters served as flower girls. They both worked together as DJ’s and conducted “Hot for Teacher” nights at local clubs. Letourneau died in 2020 of colon cancer and Fualaau just announced that he has expanded his family and is the father of a third child, another daughter.

Jeff Beck, one of the greatest guitarists of all time who rose to fame in the Yardbirds, contracted bacterial meningitis and died at 78. Beck won eight Grammy Awards and ranked fifth on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists.

Second-generation daredevil, Robbie Knievel, whose fatherEvel Knievel became America’s most famous stuntman, died at 60. The motorcyclist successfully cleared the Caesars Palace fountains in Las Vegas in 1989, a stunt his father tried but failed to pull off in 1967. He set a personal record when he went 228 feet over the Grand Canyon in 1999, breaking his leg on impact. Knievel first performed at 8 years old at Madison Square Garden alongside his father and dropped out of school after joining his dad on tour at 12. He completed over 340 jumps as Kaptain Robbie Knievel and set 20 official world records throughout his career.

Lisa Marie Presley, 54, the only child of Pricilla and Elvis Presley, was rushed to the hospital after suffering cardiac arrest, and died. Elvis died at age 42 due to cardiac arrhythmia with ventricular fibrillation, which means the heart beats abnormally then stops. There were three factors initially cited in his death including an enlarged heart, clogging of the coronary arteries and high blood pressure. Elvis’ mother Gladys Love Presley also died at the early age of 46 of heart failure in 1958.

Gina Lollobrigida, international star and “the most beautiful woman in the world” in 1955, died at 95. She started a hairstyle rage in the 1950’s known as the Poodle Cut. In her middle age, she was romanced by a man 34 years younger, and she said, “I have always had a weakness for younger men because they are generous and have no complexes.” Hmmm.

Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the former DJ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, died at 40.

Sister André, a French nun and the world’s oldest known person, died in her sleep at age 118. She lived through two world wars, 18 French presidents, 10 popes, the 1918 influenza pandemic, survived Covid-19, and was known to dine daily on wine and chocolate.

At JFK Airport, a Delta jet pilot braked, aborting takeoff to avoid colliding with an American Airlines plane, coming within 1,000 feet of the other plane right in front of it on the runway. No one was hurt, but the Delta flight returned to the gate where 145 passengers and six crew members were deplaned. Delta issued an apology and provided overnight accommodation. The situation is being investigated.

My son just sent me a news article titled How to Stop Falling Asleep on the Couch During Movies. What do you think he’s trying to tell me? Just because I’ve never seen the ending of a single movie in the past 26 years… This article says what I already know –  don’t drink alcohol, eat small meals, don’t lay on the couch, and for sure don’t get in bed to watch the movie, rest up the night before (hah), keep the remote close so you can hit pause, and if this continues to happen, talk to your primary care doctor.

Navel Gazing. Celebrities are now having their gowns and clothes designed with a cut-out just to show off their belly-buttons.  Scandalous, don’t you think? 😊

Houston Rodeo announced their 2023 rodeo lineup for music fans. I listed a few hints to jar your memory in case you can’t quite remember who your favorite might be, or better yet, if you say to yourself, why the heck are they playing at the rodeo?

In Malibu, California, where heavy storms have left many roads and highways impassible, a lucky man stepped out of his car to take a phone call just moments before his car was crushed in a rockslide. Bobby Flay doesn’t always make his own BBQ sauce from scratch. He loves a brand called Bone Suckin’ Sauce. The U.S. is reportedly close to finalizing plans to send the Patriot missile-defense system to Ukraine. Looks like Tom Brady should retire again, the season is over, and he was called out for a ‘blatantly dirty play’ in the playoff loss to the Cowboys. If he decides this last year has been very blissful, then he can un-retire again. Italy’s most-wanted Mafia boss was arrested in Sicily after being on-the-run for 30 years.

What I Heard This Week 04-14-2022

What I Heard This Week April 13, 2022

Bennifer, aka Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez as a couple, are engaged again… almost 20 years after Affleck called off their first engagement, just four days before the impending wedding. Yawn. The first time around he presented her with a 6.1 carat pink diamond solitaire (which was then her favorite gem) valued at around $2.5 million. The second time around with Affleck, her lucky color was green, and her 8.5 carat green diamond ring from Affleck is valued as much as $10 million, because green diamonds are exceedingly rare. Prior to reuniting with Affleck, Lopez’s ex, Alex Rodriguez, proposed to her with a flawless 16 carat emerald-cut diamond ring worth $1.8 million. No favorite color mentioned. First husband, Ojani Noa, gave Lopez a $100,000 ring. Quite nice in 1997. Second husband Chris Judd gave her an emerald-cut sparkler worth an estimated six figures, then third husband Marc Anthony presented her with an 8.5 carat blue diamond valued at $4 million. Yes, I spent at least 30 minutes researching all the above just so I could add this little tidbit at the end of the paragraph. Jennifer and Tom Brady were seen and overheard at Starbucks recently. Over coffee, Brady was very sweetly explaining, “Well, yes, Jennifer, I understand you have quite an extensive collection, but I happen to have seven rings of my own.” (OK, not really. I made that up, but it really works, doesn’t it?)

Diamonds were once a girl’s best friend… then yoga pants happened.

According to the Leibish Diamond Education Center, “natural fancy green diamonds are completely natural and caused by exposure to atomic radiation” and are second to red diamonds in terms of rarity. Hmmm. Red diamonds. That could be Jennifer’s favorite diamond color in the future.

A California woman put $40 into a Lottery Scratchers vending machine when a very “rude” person walked by, bumped into her, did not say a thing, then walked out the door. Because of the bump, she accidentally hit the wrong button on the machine, and she got a $30-dollar 200XScratchers ticket, something she did not want. Irritated, she went to her car and began scratching, only to find that she had won the top prize of $10 million. Oops.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Will Smith will be barred from attending the Oscars for 10 years (meaningless) because of the harmful behavior he displayed when he struck comedian Chris Rock, then continued to angrily curse him after he sat back down. Come on, there were kids watching. We instruct our children not to hit people. Please tell me where this type of violence comes from and what makes it now acceptable? Will Smith must have thought he was at a bar brawl instead of a lovely primetime televised affair that some actors had worked their entire life to achieve and did it all without ever hitting a single person. And, what about the Williams family? He was also representing them, and their story. Poorly representing them, I might add. So, he has resigned from the Academy following his violent outburst. The Academy did praise Chris Rock for “maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances” and thanked others involved for “their poise and grace during our telecast.” But something is still not right about the whole thing. Our society seems to be more accepting of unruly behavior lately. Sigh. See below.

One of the men accused of being involved in the shooting of Lady Gaga’s dog walker was mistakenly released from prisondue to a clerical error” after a court proceeding. James Howard Jackson had been charged with robbery and attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, second degree robbery, assault with a semiautomatic firearm and a felon carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. According to booking records, his case has been dismissed. The LA County Sheriff’s Department said, “The investigation is continuing and the LASD Major Crimes Bureau is actively working to get Mr. Jackson back in custody.”  Hmmm. You think!?! As we go to print, I am not aware the situation has been rectified.

She was married to Woody Allen and appeared in several of his early films.  Actor Peter Riegart is 75. Donald “Boon” Schoenstein in Animal House. Musician John Kay of Steppenwolf is 78. Musician Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane is 78. Actor & sculptor Tony Dow of Leave It to Beaver is 77. Actor Andy Garcia is 66.

Musician, pastor, record producer Al Green is 76. He is best known for recording a series of soul hit singles in the early 1970s, including “Take Me to the River”, “Tired of Being Alone”, “I’m Still in Love with You”, “Love and Happiness”, and his signature song, “Let’s Stay Together”. After an incident in which his girlfriend died by suicide, Green became an ordained pastor and turned to gospel music.

Author Henry Patterson, known by his pen name Jack Higgins, died at 92. His novel, The Eagle has Landed, sold more than 50 million copies, and was adapted into a movie in 1976. His 85 novels in total have sold more than 250 million copies and have been translated into 55 languages. Pittsburg Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was fatally struck by a dump truck in Florida and died at 24. Kathryn Hays who starred on As the World Turns for nearly 40 years, died at 88. Houston real estate pioneer Martha Turner died at the age of 81. Gilbert Gottfried, the comedian with the unmistakable, shrill voice, died at 67 from a rare disorder known as Myotonic Dystrophy type II.

Actor and former wrestler Mr. T tweeted, “I just received my 2nd Moderna booster vaccine, and I feel good! I am still going to wear my mask and keep my distance because the virus ain’t over, Fool! Grrr.” That seems simple enough to me. Mr. T is a cancer survivor and over 50 years of age. Senator Ted Cruz pulled himself away from checking the weather in Cancun and tweeted in response. “Bizarre. 535 Members of Congress can attend the State of the Union without wearing masks, but it’s still not good enough for Hollywood.”  Mr. T. did not personally respond but posted this. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11.” Go, Mr. T. Classy response.

H&M is coming out with a line of baby clothes that are fully compostable organic cotton, priced from $4.99 to $17.99. They will be 100% biodegradable, including the pigments used to print design on the clothing, plus all the pieces have no buttons or metal trim. “According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 17 million tons of textile waste, with discarded clothing being the main source, was generated in the U.S. in 2018, the latest data available. The recycling rate was just 14.7%, with 2.5 million tons recycled. Landfills received 11.3 million tons of that 2018 textile waste, which represented 7.7% of all municipal waste that ended up in landfills.” Good grief. We are such wasteful people! Recycle by donating, shop for used clothing when you can, then pass along clothing and goods for others to wear and use. Choose quality over quantity.

In the past, I think I have informed and entertained you with a story about how I like to put gardener’s salve on my hands and around my nails, then surgical gloves, then my heavy-duty garden gloves. At the end of the day, it is almost like having had a manicure, but not quite. This past weekend I worked in my flower beds both Saturday and Sunday, weeding and clipping back everything that seemed to have died during the last freeze. I lost many plants, but some of the Ixora seem to be putting out tiny green bits of color. I lost 18 new plants with the first freeze, so there was no excuse for me planting them again, but I guess the older I get, the more dangerously I like to live. The surgical gloves that I am using right now are much thicker rubber and quite nice. I can take them off when I am finished, set them aside and use them again the next day. What I forget to do on gardening days is eliminate my cup of coffee, so I take quite a few bathroom breaks. I always remove my dirty gardening gloves but keep the surgical gloves on when I go inside the house. I was wearing my favorite pair of camo shorts (so no one can see me while I work) but they have a ridiculously small zipper in the front. What I did not prepare for was getting those thick black gloves stuck in the zipper on one of my very necessary potty breaks. I will not bore you with the details, but I could really use a bathroom in the garage. 😊

It is no longer Box Wine. It is Cardboardeaux. (I just LOVE that!)

Pinterest is prohibiting users from sharing climate misinformation on its platform. Doris Day would have been 100 years old this month. Elon Musk will not join the Twitter Board of Directors after all. In Central England, a newly uncovered 1,100-year-old graveyard is supplying new information about Viking history. Sexual violence against Ukrainian women is “the new weapon” used by Russian troops.

Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy once told a story about visiting a Ritz-Carlton. Whenever Mr. Cathy thanked a hotel employee, the worker would smile and respond, “my pleasure.” Cathy was struck by the phrase and decided to employ it within his own business, believing that it was a show of great customer service and an exceptional business. It turned out to be an enormous success within his business. According to an annual drive-thru report, Chick-fil-A employees were considered the most-polite out of 15 different fast-food chains, saying phrases such as please and thank you to their customers, as well as smiling at drive-thru customers. This tells me you can close on Sundays and still make a profit by being nice.

As I left the post office this morning, I saw a sign in the ‘gift store’ where I now pick out intriguing and very available cards to send. The poster said: Lake Jackson Community, Neighbors, and Visitors… We are indeed very grateful that you are here. We hope you will enjoy your experience here today and that you will return to your homes with pleasant recollections of what you have seen and done here. If there is anything that we can do which we have not already done to make your visit more pleasant, we are yours to command. Please gently state your need; we are members of the local community as well. We all care here at the Lake Jackson Post Office. To be a host to such a gathering is an honor of which any community might well be proud. Sincerely, Your Local Postal Workers. Wow. I left there thinking about how we could just change our attitudes about chores vs. opportunities. Today I had the opportunity to let them host me for quite a long gathering. Why did not I start a conversation with the gentleman in front of me or the gentleman behind me! Because I treated standing in an awfully long line as a chore, instead of an opportunity. The two hard-working individuals behind the counter were helping customers as fast and politely as they could. Freida had to explain a few details to an obviously new employee. She was kind, generous, and understanding. Let’s take them cookies or flowers or small gifts the next time we visit the post office… they deserve it. Thanks for reading and shopping with us this week.

What I Heard This Week 03-17-2022

What I Heard This Week March 16, 2022

What is a PieCaken? Hmmm. I’m so glad you asked. It looks like something by Picasso when you cut into it… a three-layer cake with two pies inside. Researching this recipe was a time-consuming rabbit hole that was absolute fun! For Thanksgiving you can use premade pecan pie for your bottom layer, then layer cinnamon buttercream frosting, then pre-made pumpkin pie with another layer of icing, then top with round of spiced pound cake and buttercream the whole thing. They patted on an oat crumble to the sides and topped with apple pie filling, then caramel sauce. Yikes, it was beautiful. I guess you could use cherry, apple, and peach pie with white cake. The secret is cutting the pies into the same size rounds as the cake layer. Several other recipes called for whole pies to be surrounded by cake batter and cooked, then iced. Did you know that you can whip regular canned icing so it’s easier to spread? Or add some whipped cream to the canned icing for an even tastier, and easy-to-ice consistency. I did not know this. Watch some of the videos if you get a chance. It’s quite a pretty dessert and no one else is going to show up with it at your next family get-together. Don’t have time to bake?!? No problem. With help from Three Brothers Bakery, you can order the Pumpecapple Piecake that serves 40 (hah), is 11” tall and weighs 23.5 pounds. It is known as the “turducken of desserts.” There are three layers – homemade pumpkin pie baked in a pumpkin spice cake, a homemade pecan pie baked in a chocolate cake, and homemade apple pie baked in a traditional spice cake, then iced with cream cheese frosting, garnished with pecans, and drizzled with homemade caramel. This beauty sells for just $250 with store pickup in Houston. Just look at the picture. If you haven’t ever enjoyed a treat from Three Brothers Bakery, prepare yourself. Everything they sell is delicious. Breads, apple strudel, pies, cakes, cookies, and more. Right now, they have cookies iced like the Ukraine flag if you are looking for a way to support the cause.

An Irish Bank Robber
It’s Saint Patrick’s Day
, and an armed hooded robber bursts into the Bank of Ireland and forces the tellers to load a sack full of cash. On his way out the door with the loot, one brave Irish customer grabs the hood and pulls it off revealing the robber’s face. The robber shoots the guy without hesitation! He then looks around the bank to see if anyone else has seen him. One of the tellers is looking straight at him and the robber walks over and calmly shoots him also. Everyone by now is very scared and looking down at the floor. “Did anyone else see my face?‘ screams the robber. There are a few moments of silence, then one elderly Irish gent looking down, tentatively raises his hand and says, “I think me wife may have caught a glimpse.” 😊

“Hate to say it,” he began, “but we need to increase oil and gas output immediately.” said Elon Musk, billionaire developer of the signature electric car of our age, the Tesla. “Obviously, this would negatively affect Tesla, but sustainable energy solutions simply cannot react instantaneously to make up for Russian oil & gas exports.”

Ukraine became an independent country in 1991 after the fall of the USSR and since then, the country’s flag has been a symbol of freedom. Now, as Russia invades Ukraine, the Ukrainian flag is being flown by people around the world in support and solidarity. Grapevine Gifts is now carrying the Ukraine flag. It is a very well-made flag that would normally sell for much more than $7, but these guys dropped the price so the citizens of Brazoria County can afford to show their support during the saddest of situations happening in our world right now. Go pick up one and display it for Ukraine.

There is no sight on earth more appealing than the sight of a woman making dinner for someone she loves. – Thomas Wolfe

Easter Basket Idea: Brach’s candy company is debuting their Late-Night Taco Truck pack, with margarita, churro, salsa, and beef taco flavors. Actually, it sounds fairly good to me. U.S. veterans and other volunteers with useful skills are boarding planes for Ukraine to join the fight. President Zelensky is creating an international legion and is asking for volunteers to help defend his nation against Russia.

Living legend Dolly Parton never fails to impress. At 76, she says she is “extremely flattered and grateful” to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but doesn’t want the votes to be split because of her nomination. So, she’s respectfully bowing out. “I do hope the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again – if I’m ever worthy,” she said. “This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do.” The woman never slows down. Dolly created The Dollywood Foundation in 1988 for literacy and education, and she made a $1 million contribution towards Covid-19 research. All tuition costs including fees and books, are offered for employees of Dollywood Parks & Resorts pursuing higher education. She’s had hits on country music charts since 1967 and has 3 billion worldwide streams of her music and 50 Grammy nominations. Now she is in partnership with Duncan Hines so you can make Dolly Cakes right in your own kitchen. Last week Dolly and best-selling novelist James Patterson (his sales top 425 million worldwide), released a book they wrote together, Run, Rose, Run. Several days before the book release, Dolly debuted a new album of 12 songs based on the book’s characters. Wow.

Additional Note: The other nominees for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction 2022 are Beck, Pat Benatar, Kate Bush, Devo, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, Fela Kuti, MC5, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Lional Richie, Carly Simon, A Tribe Called Quest, Dionne Warwick, (who are some of these people?) and cough, cough, Dolly Parton. Yep, she is still on the list. You can cast your ballot in the Fan Vote if you have an authorized email address, by going to vote.rockhall.com. You can vote once a day (who has time for that) and when I voted, the top five artists were Duran Duran, Eminem, Pat Benatar, Dolly Parton and Eurythmics, but you can vote until April 29th. Really, is rapper Eminem considered rock & roll? Dolly, just accept it graciously and go for it. We love you…

My weaknesses have always been food & men- in that order. – Dolly Parton

There is so much science in cooking. I was trying to make room in the cabinet for new spices (some people buy new nail polish colors… I buy spices), and I came across an old bottle of cream of tartar. In the past, I have used it for making meringues and divinity, plus an occasional recipe, but I had no idea what it was made from or other uses. I was surprised. After reading about it, I realized that I am not using it to its full potential. It is an acidic byproduct of fermenting grapes into wine. The acid in cream of tartar gives snickerdoodles their distinctive tangy flavor, and the chew happens because cream of tartar prevents sugar in the cookie dough from crystalizing into crunchiness. Science! If you ever run out of baking powder, substitute 1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar for 1 teaspoon baking powder in a recipe. Add a pinch of cream of tartar to boiling vegetables to help them keep their bright, fresh color. A pinch of cream of tartar also helps stabilize whipped cream to prevent it from deflating. There is a ton more that I will tell you later.

March’s Full Worm Moon is March 18th. It is called full worm because of the earthworms that wriggle out of the ground as the earth begins to thaw in March. Pfizer and BioNTech are seeking authorization for a second coronavirus booster shot for people 65 and older. Elon Musk has challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to single combat, one-on-one fight, with the “stakes” being Ukraine. So far as I could find, Musk has yet to receive a response from Putin.

What I read… the odds of finding a four-leaf clover on your first try are 1 in 10,000 and the odds of a five-leaf clover are 1 in a million. I sent the newspaper picture to my daughter at college, who has always had the uncanny ability to find four-leaf and some five-leaf clovers every single time she sits down in a clover patch. She laughed because just weeks before, she had handed me a baggie full of four-leaf clovers that she was getting ready to throw away. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day. Thanks for reading us this week. Please keep Ukraine in your prayers.

What I Heard This Week 10-28-2021

What I Heard This Week October 27, 2021

Last week I mentioned three dogs trapped for over a month near the volcano erupting on the Canary Islands. Officials were going to use a drone to drop cargo nets, then carry the dogs to safety one by one. Since the drone only had about 8 minutes of battery life, the rescue had to be well planned, and well executed. A test run went well. Then, ahead of the drone rescue, the dogs were rescued by another group calling themselves the A Team. They left behind a spray-painted banner that said, “Stay strong, La Palma. The Dogs are fine.” It is believed that it was done secretly because the A Team might be in trouble for illegally venturing into an exclusion zone. An animal activist group thinks rescuers may have used a drone’s thermal camera to find a cold path through the lava. Come on, who let the dogs out??

Speaking of the volcano eruption… at this point, there is little La Palma can do to stop or divert the path of the lava, leading them to think towards a more drastic strategy; using military aircraft to bomb the flows in an attempt to slow the lava or send it in a different direction.

Today, I left the house without Teller’s leash, but he has been a perfect gentleman while going out to potty and walking to the mailbox…but there was not one single squirrel or possum sighting during those outings. But things can change so quickly. I have seen it happen. 😊

Oh, my. Time flies. On October 3, 1961, The Dick Van Dyke Show debuted on CBS. Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore starred as Rob and Laura Petrie, along with Larry Mathews who played little Ritchie. Rose Marie was Sally and Morey Amsterdam was Buddy, along with Ann Morgan Guilbert as Millie, the fast-talking next-door neighbor. Johnny Carson was in line for the job, but Van Dyke had more name recognition because of Bye Bye Birdie. Moore did not care for the scripts that wanted her to do housework and vacuum in high heels (reference June Cleaver), so she wore capri pants and comfortable shoes. 60 years later, the style is still with us. Yikes. That means I am getting old. Network censors did not allow TV couples to sleep together then so twin beds were necessary, except for Ozzie and Harriet Nelson because they were married in real life. “Oh, Rob.” Dick Van Dyke is now 95 years old and still dances every day. Mary Tyler Moore died in 2017 at age 80.

I love binder clips. In addition to how clips are intended to be used at the office, I use them to close bags of chips, flour, sugar, pasta, and other pantry items. I use them to fasten freeze blankets and sheets to the plants, so they don’t blow off during wintry weather. But the Farmer’s Almanac had another great idea. Place a binder clip on the head of your razers to protect them when you travel. Genius.

A 15-year-old boy reported to the Harris County Sheriff’s office this week that the body of his 9-year-old brother was in the room next to his and had been for about a year. That is exactly what they found, along with two other brothers, ages 10 and 7, abandoned, with signs of physical injuries, having been on their own for as much as a year. The apartment had no power. Neighbors were helping with food. The mother and her boyfriend were found living just 15 minutes away, having now been questioned and released, so far. Well, I have quite a few questions of my own.

Prosecutors used circumstantial evidence to convince jurors that plastic surgeon Robert Bierenbaum murdered his wife and threw her body into the Atlantic Ocean from his plane, back in 1983. Hmmm. He has now admitted that they were right. Bierenbaum confessed to the crime in a December 2020 parole board hearing. He said he strangled Gail Katz because he was “immature” and wanted her to stop yelling at him. “I went flying. I opened the door and then took her body out of the airplane over the ocean,” he told the hearing. Good luck at your next parole board hearing, buddy.

A Turkish man met with friends, later wandering into a forest. When his loved ones realized that they had not talked to him in several hours, they reported him missing. It seems that after meeting with his friends, he might have been a little drunk as he entered the forest. So, after a while resting in the forest, he joined the search party to help look for himself, not knowing that everyone (including him) was looking for him. Such a delightful story.

An amateur internet sleuth needed a Covid lockdown project, so he studied the grain pattern on the wood guitar (which was actually stolen in 1976) of Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive guitarist Randy Bachman. It was an orange 1957 Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins guitar and the sleuth compared it to guitars he saw for sale around the world, finally tracking down a match at a shop in Japan. But it had recently sold to a Japanese musician. Wait. This was the guitar that had helped write “No Sugar Tonight,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” and “American Woman.” With help from his Japanese daughter-in-law, Bachman spoke with the new owner of the guitar who agreed to part with it if a substitute could be found. Bachman found a guitar that was likely made the very same week as his.

My son recently celebrated his 25th birthday in Boston, where he moved to in August. Before he left, we toasted to his upcoming b-day and split my last, now retired, Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel 25 beer. I was saving it for something special and turning 25 is pretty special. He face-timed me this weekend while he was cleaning his walls with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Yes, this is the same son that never could pick up his underwear off the bathroom floor. Yep, a magic eraser. Does my heart good.

A 72-year-old man in Bosnia got tired of remodeling his home so his wife could look and see out in different directions, so he built a new house that can rotate in a full circle to change the position of the rooms any time his wife wants. He built the rotating house using electric motors and the wheels of an old military transport vehicle. “Now, our front door also rotates, so if she spots unwanted guests heading our way, she can spin the house and make them turn away,” he joked. If momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.

A North Carolina couple have been charged in the death of their infant, 30 years after the body was discovered in a trash can. In 1991 when the remains were found, decomposition had accelerated to where officers were unable to determine the baby’s sex. Detectives started a re-examination of the cold case in 2019, by sending a rib bone to a lab in The Woodlands where they were able to find DNA evidence, creating a genealogical profile that led them to the parents. It was determined that the infant died by blunt force trauma and asphyxiation.

Tom Brady did what no man has ever done – he made the 600th touchdown pass of his career. Then receiver Mike Evans, unaware of the specialness of the event, handed the ball to a fan. Then they took the ball back. The fan has been offered $1000 gift certificate for the team store, two signed jerseys, a helmet from Brady, a signed Evans jersey and game-used cleats, along with two season tickets for the remaining 2021 season and all of the 2022 season… just to give it back. They are saying that he could have kept the ball and made as much as $750,000 as a collectible item. There is something wrong in our world when a football is worth that kind of money. Later, Brady said that there should have been more of a negotiation and said that he is giving the fan a bit coin, (which current price is $61,839.61.) The fan is an honorable, first-class man and knows that Tom Brady should have the ball.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that in the same situation, “I’d be hard to trade with,” he said, “I would explain to everybody that’s like asking me for my baby. And then I’d tear up for them a little bit when I think about how I’m gonna have that (ball) when I’m 90 … Then, after all of that, then I’d take offers.”
So, let’s say just for fun, you get that ball and put it on a shelf in your home and your guest may ask, “What’s that?” You will reply, “That is the football Tom Brady threw his 600th touchdown pass with.” The guest would reply, “Cool. Did you hear that it is going to rain this evening?” A bit coin is better!

There’s no crying in pumpkin growing.”  Mike Schmit of Wisconsin thought he had the heaviest pumpkin in the US, since it weighed in at 2,520 pounds. He has spent about 30 hours a week growing and taking care of three pumpkins. The almost winner grew more than 50 pounds per day, also requiring 150 gallons of water each day. BUT, in order to win the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off (and the $9 per pound prize) it must be perfect-perfect. The pumpkin developed a tiny little crack. Yikes. That would have been $22,680.

A British Columbia woman awoke earlier this month when a piece of space debris or meteor made a hole in her ceiling and landed on her pillow, narrowly missing her head. Her insurance company is trying to determine whether space debris is covered by her policy. Of course.

What a clever idea. It has been a while, but most all of us remember what it feels like the morning after we drink too much alcohol, which is actually a combination of dehydration and how your liver processes alcohol. We all know that you are never supposed to drink on an empty stomach, always eating something before and during the times we are drinking. A SoBar is the first food specifically designed to slow the transfer of alcohol from the stomach to the small intestine, and wherever else it travels. Eating food after you drink is just too late. Wait, I have more. Another company has developed sparkling water plus electrolytes in lime and grapefruit. No big deal you say because you can pick up water with electrolytes at Buc-ee’s. Nope, this sparkling water just happens to be dressed up like a beer bottle. That way, you will always feel like you fit in at the party. Their website says, “There was a time when you only had alcohol to celebrate life’s special moments. We thought that should change.” GetSobars.com and KaterWingman.com.

Have a great Halloween. My son is dressing as Tiger King with the wig and everything and my daughter decided on Jessica Walter from Arrested Development, wanting to know if I still had any pantsuits left in my closet. Happy Halloween and thanks for reading The Source Weekly. FREE garage sale ads.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
