What I Heard This Week 08-24-2023

What I Heard This Week August 23, 2023

A man named Carny Jared has set a new world record after playing Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd perfectly on Guitar Hero II, only three times faster than the original… in expert mode… with no mistakes… while talking. Hmmm. Call me easily impressed. (HBO) Max has picked up a third season of And Just Like That (the Sex and the City sequel) but won’t resume production until the writer’s strike is settled. California had massive rain from Tropical Storm Hilary.  It was the first tropical storm for them in more than 80 years, which then led to flooding, mudslides, power outages and a 5.1-magnitude earthquake with aftershocks. On social media, they called it a hurriquake. And yes, according to a seismologist, a significant amount of rainwater could theoretically cause seismic disruptions.  Catalytic converter thefts are down for 2023, but still nearly 21 times higher than in 2019. Britney Spears and her husband have separated after 14 months of marriage. A Canadian fisherman was reeling in what he thought was a striped bass on his line, then as it jumped out of the water, he decided it was a porpoise… as it turned out, it was a great white shark, 6-8 feet in length. I wonder what bait he was using. While sailing his boat, a man became stranded for three days on the uninhabited island of Cay Sal in the Straits of Florida. He had written SOS in the sand and fired flares. Officials in land-locked Idaho suspect someone left a shark on the riverbank by the Salmon River as a prank. Crazier things have happened lately.

Describing her first day back in grade school after a long absence, a teacher said it was like trying to hold 35 corks underwater at the same time. – Mark Twain

Paralegal, consumer advocate, and environmental activist Erin Brockovich said Texas is “in her face” when it comes to environmental issues. That means Texas is not doing a very good job. Remember the 2000 film, the true story of Erin Brockovich portrayed by Julia Roberts, who initiated a legal case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) over their contamination of the groundwater in Hinkley, California. The long-term health effects have been horrible for the people of Hinkley.  Money cannot improve your health. Brockovich also had an extensive role in the 2012 documentary Last Call at the Oasis, which focuses on water pollution and water scarcity as it relates to water policy in the US. She also investigated a case of contaminated water in Midland, Texas, saying, “The only difference between here and Hinkley is that I saw higher levels here than I saw in Hinkley.”

It’s so hot I saw two hydrants fight over a dog.

The Pet Supermarket has Pets in the Classroom grant program that provides funding to teachers to purchase and maintain small animals in their classrooms. Pre-K through 9th grade teachers are invited to apply. Since they’re eliminating books and librarians in some of our schools, pets would be the next best thing. I remember the aquarium we had in 6th grade. Think Guinea Pig, Hamster, Fish, Betta, or Bearded Dragon. I think Parakeets. www.petsupermarket.com/pets-in-the-classroom

It’s so hot the birds are using oven mitts to pull worms out of the ground.

Starbucks is now offering compostable paper straws. They will also begin offering straws made from alternative materials including compostable plastic (what the heck is that?!?) for blended beverages or by request. In 2020, Starbucks 2030 sustainability goals included a 50% reduction in carbon emissions, a 50% reduction of water withdrawal through conservation or replenishment; and a 50% reduction in waste sent to landfill. According to what I read, customers who bring a clean (they won’t wash it for you), reusable cup and place their order in-store can benefit with a $0.10 discount on a drink and  earn 25 stars through the Starbucks Reward program.

There was an article on The Age When You Stop Feeling Young, you know, the age when people stop feeling young or start to notice signs of aging. I was thinking to myself, maybe early 60’s. Hah. They are suggesting and worrying that the millennials are starting to feel old. That means those born between about 1980 to 1996, with many individuals turning just 42 years old this year. Boo-hoo. I’m weeping loudly with sobs. I had my last child at 44. Embrace your age, find strength in it, eat healthy, take good care of your ONLY body and mind (yes, it’s the only one you’re going to get… life is not Target), and realize it’s just an illusion you’re giving up…

Tropical Storm Harold came upon us very quickly this week, and we were quite fortunate to receive a little rain as it hit parts of South Texas. Tropical Storm Franklin is expected to hit portions of Hispaniola Island, Dominican Republic and Haiti as of today when we go to print, along with two other chances of cyclone formation just hanging way far out in the Atlantic.

My son just sent me the very emotional YouTube video for the Ryan Gosling “I’m Just Ken” song, from the Barbie movie. Poor Ken. He IS more than just the man behind the tan. As you read just a few of the very clever words to the song below, just imagine Ryan Gosling on drums, Slash from Guns N’ Roses and Wolfgang Van Halen lending their guitar talents, giving it a really nice rock edge. Or just pull up the video.
Doesn’t seem to matter what I do
I’m always number two
No one knows how hard I tried, oh-oh,
I have feelings that I can’t explain
They’re drivin’ me insane
All my life been so polite
But I’ll sleep alone tonight
‘Cause I’m just Ken
Anywhere else I’d be a ten
Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blonde fragility?
I’m just Ken
Where I see love, she sees a friend
What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me?

Brazoria County residents will get to see crews dismantling the 1939 bridge built over the Brazos River at Brazoria during the Great Depression. They used local labor and called it The Bridge to Nowhere because it was completed before the shell ramps were installed. The contractor has now removed the center bridge deck, the northern arches and is working on removing decking and foundations not over the water. Then cranes will be used to take down the arches and substructure in the river. The steel from the bridge will be recycled by the contractor and the $207,987 credit given to the highway department. Some pieces will be donated to the Brazoria Heritage Foundation to create an outdoor monument to the bridge on their ground. The bridge has not been used since the new $45 million bridge on Highway 332 and FM 521 was completed in 2010. Ideas of converting it into a pedestrian bridge never came to be because of lack of funding for the conversion.

A rare spotless giraffe was born in a Tennessee zoo. Giraffes normally inherit their spot pattern from their mamas. The zoo is asking the public to help name the baby. Should it be Kimekee meaning unique, Firali meaning unusual, Shakiri meaning most beautiful or Jamella meaning great beauty? Our office thinks they are putting too much thought into this name. Come on. Her name should be Spot. Have a great week.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
