What I Heard This Week 03-31-2022

What I Heard This Week March 30, 2022

Billionaire philanthropist, MacKenzie Scott, has donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity, a global organization that partners with communities to build or improve housing. Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $2.7 billion last year (2021) to 286 groups supporting a variety of causes. In July 2020, she donated more than $1.7 billion to diverse organizations including historically Black colleges and universities. Brazosport College received one of her gifts. Later in 2020, Scott announced she donated an additional $4.2 billion to 384 organizations including food banks, emergency relief funds, and debt relief. What a woman.

“Good Food. Good Life.” Russia is being punished by taking away their chocolate. Facing growing pressure from critics to exit Russia, Swiss food company Nestle is suspending sales of Kit Kat bars, Nespresso pods, and San Pellegrino bottled water in Russia, but will continue to sell essential items like infant food and medical nutrition. Yogurt maker Danone and Pepsi said that they will suspend some business but will continue to sell essential products like milk and baby formula in Russia. Food companies are having a tough time as they weigh access to food as a basic human right, but respond to pressure from critics who say pulling out completely is necessary for sanctions against the Russian economy to succeed. It could have a real impact on how their brands are now perceived, and their bottom lines. Staying in that country and paying taxes to the budget of a terrorist country is perceived as killing defenseless children & mothers in other countries. Hmmm. It is up to us.

Humans are so reliant on technology now. Laptops, computers, smart phones. Some of us… hmmm, I wonder who they’re talking about… have not developed particularly good back-up habits to ensure that information and personal data, pictures, and videos, are secure and safe. When my son was young, I lost years of pictures when I handed him one of my old phones, and he immediately wiped it clean. Could you call any of your family if your phone died? In 1998, before the release of Toy Story 2, someone entered a command on the drives where Pixar stores the film’s files, deleting 90% of the film. Broken hard drives, hacked computers, erratic phones, we have all had it happen at least once. March 31st is National World Backup Day. In 1956, an IBM engineer came up with the idea of the external hard drive and in the 1960’s a computer scientist is believed to have invented cloud storage.

Most all of our personal information is already out there on the web, so our job is to prevent criminals from using it for their own benefit. And they will, it is just a matter of time. One step you can take is to change your passwords often. Set aside a couple of hours at least once a year, to change all your passwords on your accounts… do it more often for critical accounts like banks or health care providers. Yes, then do it again in 6 months. If you have accounts like retailers and restaurants that make you set up an account in order to purchase from them, and they now email you constantly, then close them out. Remember to upgrade the quality of your password, and never, never, never use the same password twice. One article said that if the world stopped reusing passwords for multiple sites, we would cut cybercrime in half overnight. Don’t just change one letter or number. That makes it way too easy for the bad guys. The longer and more random the password, the more power is required to hack it. If you use passphrases, use words that don’t seem to make sense together. The example they used was RedEnginesEatPurpleDust%!*. Get you a password journal – I use an address book – then print the name of the account, the login, the password, and the date you created it. Do it for every account, then put your journal in a safe place. Or you can get an online password manager. They store the information in the cloud so all you have to do is change the master password about every 6 months. There is more. Just remember that there are so many evils out there right now.

Madeleine Albright, American politician and diplomat who served as the 64th United States Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton, died of cancer at the age of 85. She was the first female secretary of state in U.S. history. Taylor Hawkins, drummer for Foo Fighters died at 50. According to a forensic report, his heart weighed double the average for a man his age. They think that this may have played a part in his death, along with a cocktail of 10 drugs found in his system.

On Google Earth, someone spotted a mountain of stolen bikes in a man’s backyard. I saw the picture and bikes were stacked high and covered the entire backyard property. Hundreds of bikes. The neighbors said the bikes had been there for years. Did the neighbors not scratch their heads and wonder why?

It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis,” Phil Collins told the concert crowd. “After tonight we all have to get real jobs.” The Genesis drummer has suffered from poor health since 2007 when he dislocated the vertebra in his upper neck during a concert. The 71-year-old began using a cane to walk in 2017 and performed all of the tour’s gigs seated in a chair.

Former President Donald Trump released an official statement announcing that he had a hole-in-one at his golf course. He said, “It took place at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on the 7th hole, which was playing 181-yards into a slight wind. I hit a 5-iron, which sailed magnificently into a rather strong wind, with approximately 5 feet of cut, whereupon it bounced twice and then went clank, into the hole.” “I won’t tell you who won because I am a very modest individual, and you will then say I was bragging – and I don’t like people who brag!” I bet Saturday Night Live has already written a skit about it for this weekend.

The safety harness and seat of the 14-year-old boy who fell to his death from an amusement park ride in Florida last week, were still locked at the end of the ride that is described as the world’s tallest free-standing drop tower, where 30 riders rise to the top, tilt forward and plunge nearly 400 feet at speeds reaching over 75 mph. There is speculation that the teen may have been too heavy for the ride. He was only 14 years old but already 6 feet, 5 inches tall, 340 pounds, with aspirations to make it to the NFL, but had been turned away from other rides because of his size. Dollywood has temporarily closed their drop tower ride that was made by the same manufacturer.

This is a story that needs to be shared. All Chick-fil-A locations throughout the US and Canada are partnering with DAR PRO Solutions, a Texas-based manufacturing company that will convert all the fast-food restaurant’s used cooking oil into cleaner burning renewable transportation fuel. More than 700 million gallons of renewable diesel are expected to be produced in 2022 as a result of the companies’ joint venture.

The University of Houston announced that it has created the Energy Transition Institute after receiving a $10 million gift from oil giant Shell. The institute will focus on production and use of reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy for all and will focus on three core areas: hydrogen, carbon management and circular plastics. The iconic koalas are now listed as endangered in several states and territories in Australia. Climate change and habitat loss had led to dramatic declines in their population. This comes after the black summer fires of 2019 and 2021, which some estimate may have left as many as 60,000 koalas dead or injured. A sad day for their nation.

Shanghai is beginning China’s largest and most extensive Covid lockdown in two years, to conduct mass testing and to control a growing outbreak. Blue Origin is set for their 4th crewed sub-orbital space flight on Thursday, two days later than planned because of expected high winds. One of Blue Origin’s first employees and architect of the New Shepard program, was added to the crew, replacing comedian Pete Davidson. Blue Origin and its customers do not discuss the cost of a New Shepard seat, but prices are thought to be in the half-million-dollar range or more. An Indiana man was arrested after murdering his wife by striking her in the face with a gallon-sized cement flowerpot after having fought about divorce because he was having an affair. The woman had just finished chemotherapy for breast cancer just days before the murder. Two teenage girls in New England were fortunate because their mothers loved them enough to turn them in to police after they assaulted, by kicking and punching, homeless people on the streets. The two girls are 14 and 16, as well as a 15-year-old boy who filmed the incident while egging on the attack. There are other videos circulating that appear to be the same situation.

Last night while I was making ramen soup, I watched the movie, Rescued by Ruby on Netflix, a real-life true story about an Australian shepherd/border collie mix rescue dog with behavioral problems (clever but naughty), trained by a state trooper who dreams of joining the K-9 Search & Rescue team. It was so good… and sweet. It is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and nothing gets 100%.

Will Smith and Chris Rock. Sigh. It is always a bad sign when you have to announce at the Academy Awards or family reunions that we do not condone violence. What we really want to see in our society, are good, positive role models from our athletics, politicians, actors, parents, school officials… you know what I’m saying. I always told my children that some individuals are put on this Earth and in their lives, not as a good example, but as a healthy guide or blueprint of what NOT to do. This gets to be a harder sell as human behavior seems to get more hostile and frightening.

On Sunday, I had the opportunity (thanks to Bonnie & David Novosad) to take my daughter to see Come From Away at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston. The story is so incredibly good. On September 11th, 2001, 7000 people are stranded in the tiny, charming town of Gander, Newfoundland after all flights into the US are grounded. While stranded, the people of Gander house, feed and entertain the “come from aways” as they find love, loss, and hope in the aftermath of terror. I have to say that it is one of the BEST musicals I have ever seen. I cried and I laughed. I bet there are still tickets left for this weekend. You have to mask which is fortunate because it helps catch the water from your eyes.

On the way to the office this morning, the bumper sticker on the car in front of me said, “I brake for Frogs.” The light took a long time to change but gave me time to think. I pivoted from thinking how silly it was to wondering about what kind of world would it be if everyone braked for frogs! I decided that it is definitely a world I want to live in.

What I Heard This Week! February 21, 2019

What I Heard This Week February 21, 2019

A 58-year-old grandmother from England noticed an ulcer in her mouth last October and had to have nearly all of her tongue, the glands in her neck and multiple teeth removed in order to remove the cancer and save her life, but doctors were able to remove muscle, skin and a vein from her left arm and create a new tongue. There were 29 people involved in the operation but when she woke up, she could talk. Amazing.

Troop 352, based at First United Methodist Church in LJ, is up to 11 members in their all-girl troop. It’s the first girl-only troop in Southern Brazoria County and they still have room for more so grab your girl and get on over there. This is the first year that girls are allowed to join Scouts BSA. It’s about time. Scouting is fun.

You can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd.

In the past, I have told you about the group I belong to, the Women’s Lecture Series where we meet 3-times a year, listen to a speaker and eat lunch. It’s the only organization I belong to where I just show up and eat. This month the speaker was best-selling author Shaunti Feldhahn. She was a former Wall Street analyst.  After years of research, she is now able to explain to us that we are not nearly as kind as we think we are. Even very loving, giving, caring people have daily habits of unkindness that we don’t even recognize, which are sabotaging us without realizing it. I bought the book and I am GOING TO LEARN TO BE KIND. (it stresses being kind when you least want to be.)

If you want more kindness in the world, then put it there.

Debra Perry, my friend and State Farm neighbor next door, walked into my office and presented me with roses. Beautiful roses. Peach and red that are opened just perfectly. It’s that ‘kindness thing’that I ‘ve been talking about. Perfect example. Thank you, Debra. Now my job is to pay it forward. Hmmm. What shall I do?

Robert Ellis (local boy) released a new record “Texas Piano Man” (which is great) but the best song is Topo Chico. You’ve got to listen to it! White tux. I’ve tried to tell you in the past…I love this guy.

My son called last week about 5pm and asked me what I thought about him coming home from University of Houston for the evening so he could see our kitties. I said no! Absolutely not! Then very quickly added, “Oh, alright, but only if I can cook you a delicious steak, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus.” He agreed. Ha-ha. What’s a mom to do when your kid wants to come home for the evening. I ran (literally) from the office to the grocery store, picked up my missing ingredients (steaks and cream for the potatoes) then stopped by the section where the individual beers live, because he and I enjoy having beer tastings – splitting new and different ice-cold beers and drinking from my Paw-Paw’s vintage Lone Star beer glasses with the roping cowboy on them. One beer I picked was a stout that was great BUT the other one was Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel 22, priced at $6.99 for ONE SINGLE BEER. Yikes. I set it back on the shelf, then decided YOLO. It says on the bottle, “With our Bishop’s Barrel series, we experiment with pairing our ales with a variety of different barrels, fruits or whatever else might strike our fancy. We age these in our barrel room anywhere from a few months to well over a year. This Saison Ale was aged in Chardonnay barrels with honey, peaches, apricots and Brettanomyces added.” It is so delicious. Since I can only afford to buy one beer at a time, there’s not a chance that I will abuse it, but I could sure get used to it.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Olympic gold-medal swimmer Mark Spitz is 69. After the Olympics, he was taking acting lessons, then read and screen tested for the part in the 1975 Jaws movie that ultimately went to Richard Dreyfuss. Spitz won seven gold medals in the 1972 Munich Games and his record stood until Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics.Actress Laura Dern is 52. Jurassic Park. Singer Sheryl Crow is 57. Actress Jennifer Aniston is 50. Actor Taylor Lautner is 27. Author Mary Higgins Clark is 91. #1 NY Times bestselling author and the ‘Queen of Suspense.’US Air Force Major General Charles E. “Chuck Yeager is 96. Actress Stockard Channing is 75.

Karl Lagerfeld, one of the era’s most respected and daring designers, died at 85. He had some great quotes.“I’m very much down to earth, just not this earth.”“I think tattoos are horrible. It’s like living in a Pucci dress full-time.” “Never use the word ‘cheap’. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.” “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought some sweatpants.”

Lee Radziwill died of natural causes at the age of 85. She was Jackie Kennedy’s younger sister and a former princess. “Regrets? I think everyone has regrets, and people who say they haven’t, are either liars…or narcissists. There have been many things in my life to have regrets about, in the sense I wish I could have changed them, or somehow made them not happen. What I don’t have is envy.”Shirley Boone, married to legendary 1950’s singer Pat Boone for 65 years, died at age 84.Remember the picture of the sailor and the woman kissing in NY’s Time Square as people celebrated the end of WWII. The sailor was George Mendonsa who died just two days before his 96th birthday. He was living at an assisted living facility in Rhode Island with his wife of 70 years. The photo by Alfred Eisenstaedt became one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century.

One of our long-time newspaper carriers has been unable to run his route for the past two weeks so I have been delivering papers. First off, I am reminded of how much it takes to get a fresh paper to you each and every weekplus what a great job these guys do making sure the papers don’t blow away or get wet. One lady told me that one Thursday Alfred came back hours later to bring her fresh dry papers because it had rained since he dropped them in the very wee hours of the morning. He didn’t realize rain was forecasted and hadn’t covered the papers. This manmissed delivery only one week in20 years. I’ll repeat…one week in 20 years. Alfred, we will miss you. Your dedication has been so appreciated.

Tom’s Pawn Shop – On my journey to deliver the papers, I found something unique at Tom’s Pawn in Brazoria. It’s a Blessing Box in front of their Brazoria store. They have been my customer for years, so I don’t know why I’m surprised. They’re such good people. It’s a box with a glass door on it that says, “Take what you need, bring what you can, above all, Be Blessed,” and it’s full of canned goods. Hmmm.

A Virgin Atlantic flight from LA to London hit a record 801-mph, 35,000 feet over Pennsylvania, compliments of the jet stream, the high-altitude air current along which storms travel. Captain Peter James tweeted, “Never, ever seen this kind of tailwind in my life as a commercial pilot.” Although the plane didn’t remain in the “jet streak” – the zone of maximum wind embedded within the jet stream – for long, it still arrived 48 minutes early. Speed of sound is 767 MPH.

Blue Bell’s latest is Raspberry Fudge Brownie–It is almondice cream combined with fudge brownie chunks, flakes of dark chocolate with a raspberry sauce swirl. According to our in-office testers, it’ssome-kind-of-good.

Brian Wilson is one of my favorites. I thought you might enjoy this little bit of 53-year-old history, according to This Day in History:  – From the very beginning, the Beach Boys had a sound that was unmistakably their own, but without resident genius Brian Wilson pushing them into deeper waters with his songwriting and production talents, songs like “Surfin’ Safari” and “Surfin’ U.S.A.” might have been their greatest legacy. While the rest of the band toured during their mid-1960’s heyday, Wilson lost himself in the recording studio, creating the music for an album, Pet Sounds, that is widely regarded as one of the all-time best, and a single “Good Vibrations” – on which he lavished more time, attention and money than had ever been spent previously on a single recording. Brian Wilson rolled tape on take-one of “Good Vibrationson February 17, 1966. Six months, four studios and $50,000 later, he finally completed his three-minute-and-thirty-nine-second symphony, pieced together from more than 90 hours of tape recorded during literally hundreds of sessions.

Brian Wilson began “Good Vibrations” that February night in 1966 with the intention of including it on Pet Sounds. Harmonica player Tommy Morgan recalled how those sessions would work: “You’d sit with a music stand with a blank piece of paper, waiting for Brian to give you your notes. He knew exactly what he wanted. He had every note in his head.” The problem was that Wilson had an awful lot of those notes in his head – notes for different keyboards, different strings, different percussion instruments and, most famously, notes for the most ‘different’ instrument ever to appear on a pop record: the otherworldly electric Theremin, an early electronic instrument previously heard only in movies like It Came from Outer Space. Emulating and ultimately outdoing his idol Phil Spector, Brian was building “Good Vibrations” into a massive wall of sound, and the further he went with it, the more it became clear that his vision for the record was too great to rush. Pet Sounds was released without “Good Vibrations” which Wilson returned to in earnest several months after his initial sessions.

When the rest of his fellow Beach Boys finally heard the track that Brian Wilson had been working on in seclusion for more than half a year, they were extremely enthusiastic, and “Good Vibrations” went on to become their third #1 hit single. It also turned out to be the last Beach Boys recording that Brian Wilson would fully participate in for years to come, as drugs, depression and mental illness derailed his career in the late-1960s.Taken from A Day in History. –

Downtown LJ Farmers Market. 110 Parking Place…it was their first weekend. Super cold but it was fun. Bread, eggs, chicken, vegetables, hot coffee, crafts, BBQ, and lots more. The golden beets and turnips were delicious. Free-range chicken was so good that I ate all 4 pieces when I roasted it two days later. The last two Saturdays, we have traveled to Angleton for Peach Street Farmers Market. Great veggies right now. Throw on a hat this Saturday and go visit them. We need to support our Farmer’s Markets.

We lost a great friend, customer and wonderful man this week. Mr. Ike Joe Talbot was involved in a car accident and passed away at the age of 93. We will miss him. We will miss his warm brownies. We will miss his great stories. In our often crazy, ugly world, he was both a gentleman and a gentleman.Oh, and he taught me how to wave on Facebook. I had no idea.

Look to your left for our Oscar Ballot. 24 categories, all presented live on Sunday evening. I always feel so stupid because I haven’t seen very many of the movies, but Sam Elliott is up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and that is good enough for me. Have a great week-end and thanks so much for taking the time to read this.Lisa Baker

What I Heard This Week! August 9, 2018

What I Heard This Week August 8, 2018

Eleven ‘financial industry’ employees ranging in age from 21 to 60, will split $543-million, the biggest prize in California lottery history after each one chipped in $2. They all plan to keep their jobs. The owner of Ernie’s Liquor store in San Jose will get his own million-dollar check as his reward for selling the ticket.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is a ‘very nice’ SUV and is now available as the first SUV in the British automaker’s 112-year history. For a base price of only $325,000 (I did NOT add an extra zero) you can have a vertical Parthenon (think Greek goddess Athena) grille, a spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament and umbrellas hidden in coach doors that shut automatically with a push of a button. Every Rolls-Royce is hand-crafted by 60 carmakers. It has a top speed of 155-mph, features hand-cut wooden trim and hand-sewn leather details with lambswool floor mats. Options include a rear info-tainment system where passengers can input directions to the driver, a rear center console with a whiskey decanter, a rear tailgate set with mechanized fold-out chairs and a table. Sorry, the chauffeur is extra.

According to Zillow, the median home value in Texas is $185,900 and the median home value in Houston is $178,300. So that tells me that you can buy almost two houses in either Houston or the State of Texas or you could just settle for one lonely SUV with what looks like a woman flying with sheets wrapped around her arms then stuck in the middle the hood. Priorities.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo in upstate New York is proud to announce the birth of twin red pandas, an endangered species found in Asia. Their names are Loofah and Doofah after characters in “The Land Before Time.” Then, rescued and rehabbed harbor seal pups, Tomato and Ravioli, made their public debut at Moody Gardens Aquarium. Both are considered un-releasable because of poor eyesight and neurologic & balance problems.

Shark Week: A woman and two men pulled a horn shark named Miss Helen out of her tank at the San Antonio Aquarium, wrapped her in a blanket then pushed her out of the aquarium in a baby stroller. Video showed it all, so the thief had no choice but to direct police to his personal aquarium where he had placed the shark.

Terry and the T-Birds in concert. August 18th Lake Jackson Civic Center 979-415-2600

Alan Alda, 82, star of M*A*S*H, revealed that he has been living with Parkinson’s disease for over three years. “The reason I want to talk about it in public is that I was diagnosed 3-1/2years ago and I’ve had a full life since. I thought it’s probably only a matter of time before somebody does a story about this from a sad point of view, but that’s not where I am.” Alda says he went to the doctors after reading that acting out one’s dreams could be an early warning sign of the disorder. He is also speaking out to reassure people that they do not have to be fearful after a diagnosis. He boxes three times a week, plays tennis and marches to John Philip Sousa music because it’s good for Parkinson’s. Thank you, Alan Alda.

Freaky Friday, the Musical, will broadcast this Friday evening on the Disney channel.

‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ – This sequel seems to be a totally ridiculous mixture of joy, good songs, dance, love and all sorts of cheesy, happy and weepy moments. I cried. I laughed. Honestly, if you can’t go and just enjoy it for what it is, then leave the rest of us alone so we can continue singing.

Maya Angelou – “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Actor Patrick Stewart is 78. Actor comedian Cheech Marin is 72. Actor director Cameron Crowe is 61. Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Before moving into the film industry, Crowe was a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine. Actor Giancarlo Giannini is 76.  He dubbed Jack Nicholson’s voice in the Italian release of both The Shining and Batman and is the official Italian dubber for Al Pacino. Rock singer Joe Elliott is 59. Def Leppard. Rapper Chuck D. is 59. Public Enemy.

Singer Tony Bennett is 92 and just released his new single with Diana Krall. He will be at Smart Financial Centre later this month. Singer Christine McVie is 75. Fleetwood Mac. Fitness guru Richard Simmons is 70. Actress Cheryl Ladd is 67. Actor Darryl Hickman is 87. The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Comic strip creator Jim Davis is 73. Garfield. Actress Sally Struthers is 71. Gloria Stivic on All in the Family. Jazz musician producer Delfeayo Marsalis is 53.

In nature, when a new queen splits from her original hive, all the bees with her must find a new home. So, when you see this happening it will look like a swarm (because it is) but it is pretty safe if you don’t provoke them. When you have a problem with bees, always call a professional (beekeeper) that will help protect and save the bees – not an exterminator. WE NEED BEES.

Lady Gaga announced her Las Vegas concert residency at Park Theater at the new Park MGM resort. She will have two different shows scheduled; ‘Jazz & Piano’ and ‘Pop.’

Pink Eye is transferred from person-to-person quickly, lasts one to two weeks, is not treatable with antibiotics and seems to be on the rise this summer. The strain making its way around right now is viral instead of bacterial and more resistant to medication. WASH YOUR HANDS, don’t touch your face. Learn to sneeze into your elbow since the virus can travel with a sneeze. If you have someone in your family that happens to get this charmer, then wipe down your door and cabinet knobs, wash your sheets and towels in hot water, change your pillow case often and your tube of mascara. Now, I bet that your eye is itching or watering just reading this. Mine is.

In Texas, “Aren’t you precious,” translates to “At least your Mama thinks you’re pretty.”

French lawmakers passed legislation banning students as old as 15 from bringing smartphones and tablets to school unless they are turned off. Officials believe, “This is a way to shield children from addictive habits and to safeguard the sanctity of the classroom.” Way to go!

Socrates – “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

Saint Arnold Brewing was founded 24-years ago by Brock Wagner. His beautiful new beer garden and restaurant is open to the public seven days a week. Enjoy beer, food, architecture, art and a view of downtown Houston. Love that Lawnmower.

JOKE: I was visiting my daughter and son-in-law last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper.
‘This is the 21st century,’ he said. ‘We don’t waste money on newspapers. Here, you can borrow my iPad.’  I can tell you, that mosquito never knew what hit it…

University of Houston All-American defensive tackle Ed Oliver is featured on one of four regional covers for the college football preview issue of Sports Illustrated. The headline reads: “Ed Oliver Is A Big Boss. For the Cougars Now. In the NFL Draft Next Year.”

It looks like Australia just built the world’s longest cat-proof fence bordering the Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s 27.3-miles long and after they clear the area of cats and other predators, they will introduce eleven different endangered species as part of a “rewilding” campaign. The mala is a marsupial that looks like a cross between a rabbit and a rat is only one of Australia’s most endangered mammals. Eventually the fence will extend another 84 miles making it one of the most important conservation infrastructure pieces in Australia. Feral and pet cats kill more than a million birds in Australia every single day.

Baby diapers, tissues and toilet paper are expected to get more expensive as demands for wood pulp increases. At the Source Weekly office, we can tell you that the price of paper used in this newspaper you are reading right now has increased significantly over the past few months. So please pass this paper along to a neighbor, a recycle sack or to the SPCA. We’ve got to start taking better care of our planet.

In the District of Columbia, about 18 to 22 “Violence Interrupters” will be on the streets after receiving 40 hours of mediation training. Interrupters cruise the streets of the toughest neighborhoods to identify and intervene in neighborhood conflicts and issues before they intensify. Hmmm.

This is really sad. Sabine Ntongo dropped her children off at their father’s apartment for visitation early on Saturday morning. His children cried, and the young son told his father “Daddy, I’m sorry,” just minutes before his father allegedly slit the children’s throats and left them on the bed, telling his wife he’d left her a ‘present.’ Jean Pierre Ndossoka has been charged with capital murder in the deaths of his 1-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. I’m speechless. Stories like this used to be unusual. It seems to be the norm now.

My daughter will be studying Industrial/Packaging Design in college this fall. She plans to place special emphasis on finding more recyclable or compostable products that are safer for our beautiful home, Earth. She has longed for this career since she was a little girl. In my reading I found that Kraft Heinz Co. has just announced that it plans to make 100 percent of its packaging globally recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. They admit that it will be a tough road. Other consumer companies that have set deadlines to make their products more friendly to the environment include Unilever (Bryer’s, Dove,  Hellman’s Knorr, Lifebuoy, Lipton and more), Procter & Gamble (Always, Bounty, Charmin, Crest, Dawn, Downy, Febreze, Gain, Luvs, Head & Shoulders, Olay, Oral-B, Pampers, Tide and lots more), Nestle (over 2000 brands including Alpo, Carnation, Cat Chow,  Friskies, Fancy Feast, Gerber, Haagen-Dazs), and Colgate Palmolive (Colgate, Softsoap, Lady Speed Stick, Murphy Oil Soap, Tom’s of Maine, Fabuloso and more).  As consumers, we HAVE to make sure that we set our standards high and ONLY buy products that are safe for our Earth.  Starting today.

Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans. John Lennon

A friend of mine has a 2-year-old son in addition to 2 older teen daughters. In my opinion, boys are just different than girls. She recently let some of her friends know that she has had to resort to the ‘old wooden spoon’ to convince him to stay buckled up in his car seat. I sent her a note letting her know that when my son was younger he had to sign and date the spoons. (I say ‘spoonS’ because sometimes they would disappear, so I had several stashed in various locations.) It wasn’t often that I actually ‘had to use’ the spoon, I just had to flash it.  Often. I do miss those days. The only thing a mom can do now is to turn off the wi-fi or quit paying their phone bill. The wooden spoon was so much more fun.

Thanks again for reading this and have a great weekend. Lisa

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
