What I Heard This Week 11-04-2021

What I Heard This Week November 3, 2021

On Halloween day, there were two black vultures sitting on a light pole at the entrance of our subdivision. Like they were props. Watching. Waiting. Very appropriate for the day. I took a picture.

New York City is now dealing with an unusual outbreak of a rare, sometimes fatal disease spread through rat urine, called leptospirosis. It is not known why there have been so many new cases this year, but warmer weather conditions fueled by climate change is cited as a possible factor. A group of rat hunters are doing their part to help catch the critters, along with their pet dogs. One gentleman has spent 30 years of Friday nights, responding to public complaints about the 2-million plus brown rats living in NYC. He said that his dogs instinctively kill the rats but never get sick because they know to avoid the diseased rats. See, things could be worse in Texas. My son says that the rats are all over Boston, too. Hmmm.

The trouble with being in the rat race is that even if you win, you’re still a rat. Lily Tomlin

A fast-food customer was killed at the drive-thru window of a McDonald’s in what police called a freak accident. The customer opened his door to get something he had dropped from his window while paying. As he opened the door and leaned out, the car rolled forward hitting part of the restaurant, which pinned him between the door and the frame. Efforts were made by first responders to revive the man, but he died on the scene. In 2012, a woman suffered serious injuries in the same such situation at another McDonald’s when she dropped money, reached down to pick it up as her foot slipped off the brake, and the car rolled forward. In 2018, a motorist opened a door at a Jack In The Box drive-thru to get his food. He tried to back up, but accelerated while doing so, hit a tree, and was pinned between the car and tree. I know you are thinking to yourself, fast food kills, so I’m not even going to mention it.

To me, fast food is when a cheetah eats an antelope. George Carlin

Since 1963, we have all been wondering what is inside those memorizing Astro Lamps aka Lava Lamps, designed by Edward Craven Walker. It is actually wax that is heated, then floats and rises to the top of the lamp, then as it cools it falls back down. There has been so little change in the way that the lamp is made that you can still buy spare parts for a lamp that was made in the 60’s. At its peak of popularity in the 90’s, they were selling over 800,000 lamps a year. The precise mix of chemicals used in commercial lava lamps remains a trade secret, but it is said to be a blend of paraffin and perchloroethylene (PERC, aka dry-cleaning fluid, or brake part cleaner). The base liquid is supposed to be mostly a mixture of water, dye and chemicals that prevent the formation of fungus. Now you know.

A husband is someone who after taking out trash, gives the impression he just cleaned the whole house.

Josh Duggar, 33, of the 19 Kids and Counting show, was charged with receiving and possessing more than 200 images of child sex abuse material, involving minor children from about 18 months of age to 12 years. He said he is not guilty. His wife, Anna, very pregnant with their seventh child, says she believes he is innocent. He has been granted unlimited contact with his children (as long as his wife is present) but is not allowed to see any other minor children, including his many nieces and nephews. Allegedly he admitted he molested five underage girls as a teen, but he could not be criminally charged because of statute of limitations had run out (even though he had confessed.). Two of his own sisters have come forward as two of his victims. If convicted (come on, of course he should be convicted) he could face a possible sentence of 40 years. Hmmm. NOT LONG ENOUGH. As a mother, I know exactly what I think should happen to him. He would be screaming like a girl. Meanwhile back at home, his dad Bob Duggar will be running for Arkansas State Senate.

I believe more in the scissors than I do the pencil. Truman Capote

The oldest surviving former Miss America, Jo-Carroll Dennison, died at 97. With a talent performance of Deep in the Heart of Texas, she captured the crown in 1942, after a banker stopped her on the street in Tyler, Texas and asked her to represent his bank in the town beauty pageant. She was one of the first pageant winners to object to wearing a swimsuit as she toured in the year after her victory.

In Texas, a mother and her 20-month-old baby boy were in a motel room when someone knocked. Three women overpowered the mother and took the child. The mother chased after them and was able to physically rip the front license plate from their vehicle before they drove away. Police used this information along with surveillance video, and the child was eventually returned to his mother safely. Ahh. The strength of a mother’s love can literally peel license plates right off cars.

Taco Bell is testing a monthly taco subscription service called Taco Lover’s Pass, where you can get one taco per day, for a month. More information to come, but great idea. Chipotle is adding smoked brisket to the menu. YUM. McDonald’s will be adding a new cheeseburger called The McPlant that is vegan. The burger is made with Beyond Meat which includes ingredients like yellow peas, coconut, potato, and beetroot juice. It is topped with vegan cheese and vegan sandwich sauce. For all my vegetarian friends. In an effort to protect our planet, McDonald’s is giving Happy Meals toys an environmentally friendly makeover, phasing out plastic toys, and if it works (of course it will work if they really want it to work), resulting in a 90% reduction in virgin plastics in favor of customizable crafts and build-your-own construction projects, paper-based trading cards, board games and lots of fun in each Happy Meal. I say get rid of anything that is not compostable, not biodegradable, that way it returns to the Earth.

OK, listen up. I am going to give you plenty of time to get your stuff together. Texas Gulf Bank is hosting Shred Day at the LJ Rec Center parking lot on Saturday Dec. 4th from 8 to 11:30. I got there last time and the truck was already full, so get your papers gathered up now so you are ready when the time comes. Mark it on your calendar right now so you will not forget. You know you have stuff that needs shredding.

What does it tell you when you can buy a $123,000 battery-powered Aston Martin DB5. It is the same car James Bond drives. Oh, but wait, there is more to this story. It just so happens this is the child-size version. Yes, for children. The Aston Martin DB5 Junior is a smaller version of the one in the movies, including little toy machine guns that come out of the front as the headlights retract, and a smokescreen device that pumps dark smoke through tiny little exhaust pipes. Isn’t this sweet? And your name doesn’t even have to be Kardashian. Hmmm. It can get up to speeds of 45 to 50 mph. The Aston Martin spokesperson says, “We’d encourage parents to ensure their kids wear a helmet and that kids are supervised while driving.” Oh, really? Honestly, don’t you remember how good it felt to be going downhill on your bike with your feet hanging off the pedals and your hair flying in the wind? I vote for bicycles for Christmas, like in the old days. Walmart has a bunch in stock right now.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has decided on a formal definition of Long COVID, defining it as a “post-COVID condition.” The WHO said: “Common symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive dysfunction but also others… which generally have an impact on everyday functioning. Symptoms may be new-onset, following initial recovery from an acute Covid-19 episode, or persist from the initial illness. Symptoms may also fluctuate or relapse over time.”

First of all, you don’t get the vaccine for yourself, you get it for other people,” NBA legend Charles Barkley said. “I got vaccinated. I can’t wait to get the booster. You don’t get vaccinated just for yourself. Like [NBA Commissioner] Adam [Silver] said, you get vaccinated for your family first, you get vaccinated for your teammates second.” “I think everybody should get vaccinated,” Barkley added, noting he was “proud of the Nets for putting their foot down and for saying, ‘No, we’re not going to deal with this half on, half off’” and allow Kyrie Irving just to play on the road. Note: Irving will still receive half of his $35 million salary as he sits out the season. Yep. $17 million to sit at home.

Even if we disagree about everything, we can still be kind to each other.

Volkswagen just unveiled a tiny, boxy electric SUV called “ID. Life,”  a cute concept vehicle priced for first time car buyers that should cost around $24,000, when it gets here. VW says the car is made from several different recycled and renewable materials. Wood chips were used as a coloring agent in the car’s paint, and the lightweight removable roof is made from recycled bottles. The tires are made from biologically based oils, rice husks and natural rubber.

Having kids basically feels like waking up on the first morning of daylight saving time every day for 18 years.

Fall Back! Daylight Saving Time is November 7th. No “s” at the end of saving. That means it will start getting dark right after you eat lunch. It just seems so silly for us to continue doing this. In 2020, American Academy of Sleep Medicine said the U.S. should eliminate daylight saving time in favor of a year-round standard time. The Royal Family has a resident clock master who must turn back 1,500 clocks. Think of the money they could save. Let’s repeal and replace Daylight Saving Time. Actually, I thought it happened last week-end, so on Sunday morning I got ready to re-set the clock in the kitchen after looking at the correct time on my cellphone. Well, that was weird. I convinced myself that the electricity had gone out during the night because I heard my neighbor’s generator going, or perhaps I just convinced myself that I heard it. Anyway, I believed what I told myself, and went on with my day. I worked outside, pulling weeds, burning sticks and never gave it another thought. BECAUSE I WAS LOOKING AT MY CELLPHONE which was correct. The next morning the cats woke me up an hour early for food. Dang. They had set their clocks forward. 😊 Have a great weekend and thanks again for reading and shopping with us. We appreciate you so much! What I Heard This Week! 04-15-2021

What I Heard This Week April 15, 2021

This was a surprise. Epsom salt is best known as something extra for your bath, but it is so much more. It was discovered in the 17th century, first distilled from the water of a bitter saline spring at Epsom, in Surrey, England. It is technically known as magnesium sulfate, composed of tiny, colorless crystals that look like salt, but table salt is sodium chloride. Many of us are lacking in magnesium sulfate since over-development of agricultural land leaches essential minerals from the soil. Even the overuse of prescription medications, and the consumption of processed and fast foods all take a toll on depleting our body of magnesium. So, what to do? Soak in it since it is easily absorbed through the skin. It can help relieve muscle tension, pain, inflammation in joints, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve cardiovascular health. Tired and sore feet also benefit from a good soak. Both magnesium and sulfate help to improve the body’s ability to produce and use insulin. There are now float spas that offer floatation therapy, where you get into a small pool full of Epson salt and body temperature water, and float for about an hour. The video looked awesome. I am definitely a shower person, but after I wrote this, I decided to try out my big bathtub (for the second time since I bought my house 6 years ago) with Epson salts and hot water. (This might be the time to mention that I can even fall asleep sitting at the kitchen table.) I woke up at 2:30am. Didn’t anyone even miss me at my house and come looking for me? Heck, no! My son said that he could not figure out why I wasn’t answering him when he tried to talk to me outside the bath door. Well, because I was sleeping in the tub, silly!

I am telling you in advance so you can prepare. Texas Gulf Bank is hosting Shred Day on April 24th from 9 to 11:30am (or until the truck is full) at their LJ downtown location 203 This Way. Limit of 5 large boxes.

There is a hot new status symbol. It is the COVID-19 vaccination club card. It’s not really very glamorous, just a piece of heavy white paper that is handed to you when you get your first vaccination. You may feel that it needs to be laminated so it will look way-more-sexy for your second vaccination, but DON’T. You can’t write your new information on it if it is laminated. Staples has offered to laminate your card for FREE after your second vaccine, which is nice, but what if we end up needing booster shots in the future. Instead, how about a little plastic protector, or you could put it on a lanyard, wear it around your neck, and create vaccine envy of all your friends. If you lose it, be warned that it will cost $19 to replace your card with a non-official version, so always keep it in a safe place. It is recommended that you take it to your next doctor’s appointment. The CDC also recommends that you take a picture of it, send it to yourself, whatever it takes in case you misplace your card, so you will have your patient number and vaccine info. But do NOT share it on social media because of identity theft. And do not fall for the fake cards that are being sold by those working to scam you. If you have scheduled several appointments trying to get vaccinated(like I did), once you have been vaccinated, please cancel your other appointments for those that are waiting can get their first vaccine, too. We are going to get there.

Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart. Erma Bombeck

A man left his car window open while he made just a 10-minute grocery store run, returning to his car to find a swarm of approximately 15,000 honeybees in the back seat. After noticing something really wrong, he called 911 because he didn’t know what else to do. An off-duty firefighter whose hobby is beekeeping, safely removed the swarm, relocated them to his property, and will now reap the benefits…honey. He said, “I’ll do anything to keep people from killing the bees.” Evidently it is common in the spring for colonies of bees to split, with a swarm following a queen to another location. In this case, the open window could have provided a location for the bees to take shelter until they could find a more permanent home. Don’t forget to plant some flowers this spring. I recommend super easy Zinnias.

It is called a Xupermask and is being launched by musician and investor will.i.am and Honeywell, now selling for $299. It has built-in fans, Bluetooth connectivity and audio. The big question is how long will we be masking up? The Department of Health and Human Services is offering$500,000 for the Mask Innovation Challenge: Building Tomorrow’s Maskimproving comfort, utility, and protective capabilities. You can only submit designs until 04-21-2021 so you better get on it if you have an idea.

The German carmaker said that Volkswagen Group of America was “unveiling the official change of its U.S. brand name from Volkswagen of America to Voltswagen of America” to lean into its aggressive electric vehicle production plans. Then they mentioned, not really…April Fools. A California hiker was found after he snapped a picture of his legs and sent it to a friend, saying he was lost and that his phone was dying. The sheriff’s department released the photo and asked area hikers if they could help. One of those hikers recognized his location, responded with possible coordinates, the hiker was found and airlifted to safety. One more time: The IRS delayed tax-filing deadline to May 15th.It is called a supply chain problem and it is happening everywhere. A ketchup shortage is now caused by a lack of the cute little packets, which was caused by the pandemic increase in takeout dining. Erin and Ben Napier, stars of Home Town, are having another baby girl in May. It is one of my favorite shows.

What I Heard This Week! 07-25-2019

What I Heard This Week July 25, 2019

Dear children: I know it’s tragic when the wi-fi isn’t working or even worse, is too slow, but let me tell you a story of catastrophic proportions from early adulthood about…8-tracks and cassettes. The ribbons would get stuck in the players of our cars while we were listening to our favorite songs.  I can still see those shiny ribbons blowing across the highway after ‘someone’ got so upset that they would jerk the cassette or 8-track out of the player. Frustration just overwhelmed our common sense and people (not me, of course) were known to chunk the whole thing out the car window in frustration, all while speeding down the road. Why, you ask? Because we didn’t have money to ‘download’ new music. We had to physically get into our cars and drive to the ‘record’ store to pick out new music. It was not dull or uninspiring at all because believe it or not, we actually had fun talking and having conversations with each other at the music store, on the way to the music store and after we got home from the music store.  Real conversations, not texting. Love, mom

“What to do with your one life? The same thing you would do if you have two lives, and this were the second.” Robert Brault

Big Little Lies: the conclusion and final show of Season 2 was a little bit disappointing. Nicole Kidman said she “would love” a third season, but only if everyone was involved…but will this series really return? Honestly, when Renata (Laura Dern) smashed a bunch of her husband’s toy and train collections with one of his own prized baseball bats, her performance was unbelievable.

Former Cy-Fair assistant 8th grade principal at Anthony Middle School, Chris Maple, was placed on administrative leave pending a complete investigation and will not be returning for the 2019-2020 school year, after nude photos of him were allegedly circulating among students. Administrative leave? Hmmm. I would think nude photos call for ‘hit the road jack and don’t come back.’  Further research shows that he was convicted in 2008 for indecent exposure.

A glow-in-the-dark ‘pocket shark’ has been discovered in the Gulf of Mexico. The recent identification of the 5-1/2-inch shark has researchers from Tulane University in New Orleans and across the world talking. Researchers believe the petite shark emits luminous fluid from two tiny pockets, one located on each side near the gills, allowing them to glow in the dark.

Anne-Elisabeth and I watched Bohemian Rhapsody this week. It’s the story of the formation of Queen and the events leading up to their famous 1985 performance at Live Aid. It’s not only a collection of great music, Rami Malek is a fantastic actor, along with the rest of the cast. This week Queen’s 1975 Bohemian Rhapsody music video became the oldest music video to reach a billion views on YouTube. I’m not surprised. What’s not to like about one of the greatest songs EVER…

Are you having thoughts (while you still can) about how to save your brain? Here are some reminders: 1.) Drink more water. The brain is 80% water so even mild dehydration affects function. 2.) Practice mindfulness. Get a meditation app for your phone. 3.)  Exercise. Short bursts of activity produce BDNF, which is called Miracle-Gro for the brain. Regular exercise releases irisin, a fat-crushing hormone. 4.) Feed your brain. Eat plant foods, healthy fats, Omega-3’s and less processed foods. To reduce inflammation, eat within a 12-hour window. ‘When’ you eat is as important as ‘what’ you eat.  5.) Get more sleep. 7-8 hours each night. Sleep apnea is strongly linked to dementia. Melatonin 30 minutes before bed helps me. Seek help. 6.) Blood Pressure. Systolic pressure under 120.Pop test later. 😊

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Actor director Sylvester Stallone is 73. Former football player, actor Fred Dryer is 73. He nearly won the role of Sam Malone on Cheers (1982), but lost it to Ted Danson when the writers decided they’d rather have the owner of the bar be a baseball player instead of a football player.Actress Shelley Hack is 72. Tiffany Welles in Charlie’s Angels.Actor Geoffrey Rush is 68. He is one of 24 people who have won the Triple Crown of Acting:  Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Award, and Tony Award.

Music executiveTommy Mottola is 71. Actress Allyce Beasley is 68. She is best-known for her role as rhyming, love-struck receptionist Agnes DiPesto in the television series Moonlighting. Actress Nancy Olson is 91.Betty Schaefer in Sunset Boulevard.  Actor, singer, Protestant minister and former professional football player Rosey Grier is 87. Actor Matthew Fox is 53. Jack Shephard on the supernatural drama series Lost.

Hip-Hop musician “taboo” is 44. Black Eyed Peas. Actor Patrick Wayne is 80. Second son of John Wayne. (Yikes. John Wayne’s son is 80. I’m getting old.) Country singer T.G. Sheppard is 75. He was one credit away from high school graduation but ran away from home at 15 to become involved in the music industry in Memphis.

Art Neville of the Neville Brothers, a legend in the New Orleans music scene and a funk pioneer, died at 81. He was best known as the voice of the Carnival season anthem, “Mardi Gras Mambo,” which he wrote and originally recorded in the 1950’s, and is still used today.

A father of six died at a North Carolina beach after a wave hit him with such force it slammed his head into the sand, breaking his neck. He was playing on the beach with three of his kids who tried to save him. He was 37. Be careful.

“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Burger King has a new crispy taco. Based on what I read, Jack in the Box is not worried, and Taco Bell is still the winner in fast-food tacos.

A great way to start saving the Earth is to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic. On average, Americans toss 185-pounds of plastic per person each year. If that number feels high, actions like not taking a plastic lid when you grab a cup of coffee each morning and always carrying a reusable water bottle go a long way as a great start. Look at packaging when you shop. Buy in bulk or from bulk bins. Changing our habits can be challenging, but when it comes to saving the ocean and the planet, we need to do what it takes. Start today.

The 14th annual Chappell Hill Lavender & Wine Festival will be Saturday, August 10th. Chappell Hill is not that far. The lavender farm will have craft vendors, music, demonstrations, lavender cuisine, petting animals and plants for sale, then you head over to Windy Winery for grape stomping, live music and wine tastings.Speaking of grape stomping, on the evening of Sunday July 28th, Haak Vineyards in Santa Fe is having live music by The Slags, the finest food trucks in SE Texas, vendors and artists’ booths for shopping and a grape stomp. So, grab the kids and make some memories. www.haakwine.com for tickets and info.

Volkswagen is halting production of the current, third-generation Beetle this month. The car’s original design, a rounded silhouette with seating for four or five, a nearly vertical windshield and air-cooled engine in the rear, can be traced back to engineer Ferdinand Porsche, who was hired to fullfill Adolf Hitler’s project for a people’s car – a cheap, simple car that could be mass-produced for his country’s new road network. Beetle production began in 1938 and is considered to be one of the most important cars of the 20th century.

The Cleveland Clinic has reported that they delivered the first baby in North America with a womb transplant from a dead donor. Uterine transplants have enabled several women to give birth but normally with wombs donated from a living donor.

Part of my daughter’s birthday gifts were tickets to the Houston Symphony to see “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,”the film-with-live-orchestra series. They show the movie on a 40-ft screen while the symphony plays below. Music always plays such a major role in movies, but it’s especially important in the Harry Potter films, setting the tone for drama, action and now with the fifth movie, romance. They’re doing The Little Mermaid the end of August.

“El Chapo”– one of the most notorious outlaws in the past 100 years, has been sentenced to life in prison. As he was taken away to a holding cell, he blew a kiss to his wife (who was implicated in a handful of his crimes.) Sweet.

The deadly Ebola outbreak in Congo is now considered an international health emergency according to the World Health Organization. This is the 5th such declaration in history. Previous emergencies were the 2014 Ebola outbreak, the 2016 Zika, the 2009 Swine flu pandemic and 2014 polio surge.

Well, it’s been twenty years since I lay awake in my bed listening to beautiful squeaking and grunting noises coming from the bassinet that belonged to my newborn daughter. She was my bonus baby because I went in to see Dr. Giannone for an upper respiratory infection and found out I was pregnant. I was not expecting that. She was born in July and I turned 44 in August of that year. She was and continues to be everything that I could ever have dreamed about. Smart, witty, hard worker, but most of all, she is nice and all things good. When she was growing up, each birthday she was allowed to invite as many people as she was years old. I had read something saying that this was a good rule. I liked it, so it stuck. So, twenty people were invited to dinner; her close friends from high school and new friends from college. They were told to “dress to impress” – which meant no gym shorts for the boys. Since ‘our house’ always had the ‘breakfast after-parties,’ I have known most of these kids since they were in 4th grade. It was so much fun to see them a bit more mature along with the self-assuredness that comes from having been away for a year…they laughed and talked, played the piano and a popular game while I served different food courses throughout the evening. I had homemade sangria without the liquor, which I’m sure was a great disappointment, but everyone was gracious and thanked me. Kids helped me in the kitchen. Some friends had traveled a distance and spent the night, so I used the leftovers and cooked breakfast for them the next morning.  I have told you before, and will continue to tell you, that I am one lucky mom. A mom that now happens to have a twenty-year old daughter. Word of Caution: Time flies. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do and say today. Happy Birthday, Anne-Elisabeth. Thank you for being my kid and for sharing your incredible life with me. I love you to the moon and back a hundred-million-trillion times and I’m so unbelievably proud to be YOUR mom.

Thanks for taking the time to read us this week. Lisa

What I Heard This Week! August 30, 2018

What I Heard This Week August 29, 2018

Getting old is terrible. I used to wake up feeling like a million bucks…now I feel more like a bounced check.

Bush Intercontinental airport has opened four nursing rooms equipped with AC and USB power outlets, changing tables and glider chairs. Most rooms can accommodate three mothers at a time as well as additional children and an area to put the stroller. Way to go! Wish there had been something like this when I was nursing my two kids.

A lone kangaroo caused a timeout at a soccer field during a National Premier League match in Canberra, Australia. Twice. Because of a record dry winter, there is very little food, so mobs of kangaroos are hopping into towns to munch on green lawns, sports fields and schoolyards.

This is a crazy story. Volkswagen has quit using ‘hail cannons’ outside their factory in Puebla, Mexico after local farmers blamed the cannons for a drought that lead to the loss of nearly 5,000 acres of crops by keeping away precipitation. The automaker was using cannons to emit shock waves into the sky, which is believed to prevent the chunks of ice from forming, therefore eliminating hailstorms and damage to the new cars. I don’t make the news, I just read it and then figure out what I think you will be interested in knowing.

For decades, China restricted the number of babies that a couple could have, with their one-child policy. Traditional preferences for male children resulted in selective abortion therefore, there are now fewer females to marry and bear children. Three years ago, they decided to change that number to two children per family.  China now has more than 1.4-billion people, is aging quickly and has a smaller workforce left to support their growing elderly population that seems to be living longer.

The only rule is don’t be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in. Paris Hilton

Contact lens packages don’t currently tell users how to dispose of the lens, so many users either flush them down the toilet or wash them down the sink instead of putting them in the garbage. A 2015 study said that there were 93,000 to 236,000 metric tons of microplastic swirling around in the ocean. If that was 3-4 years ago, what’s it like now. Dispose of your contact lenses properly. They are medical devices so do not expect them to be biodegradable.

When I first learned to cook, there were only Red Delicious apples and Granny Smith green apples. You ate the red ones and baked pies with the green ones. That was it. Today, there are Braeburn, Fuji, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Cortland, and my personal favorite, the Pink Lady, plus many more. Well, the Gala apple which we all love, originated in New Zealand in the 1930’s and has now risen in popularity, giving it the classification of ‘new favorite’ over the Red Delicious. I think we would all agree.

Climate change has created heat so bad in Japan (and right here in the USA in case you haven’t noticed) that their government officials are urging male citizens to use parasols or umbrellas to keep healthy in the heat. Male officials posted fun pictures of themselves on social media with their UV umbrellas, as stores immediately reported a surge in sales among men in their 50’s to 70’s.

In the past two years, Brad Pitt has given his estranged wife more than $1-million and lent her another $8-million to buy her current home. She says, “he has paid no meaningful child support.” Hmmm.  I wonder if Angelina fully understands how a normal, regular, average mom in the normal, regular, average world, survives and raises kids with the amount of money they are paid for child support.

Everyone has either read, watched the movie or heard about Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fannie Flagg. She is such a wonderful story teller. (When I am in the car, I am always listening to a book on tape. Always.) Last week I finished a Fannie Flagg book-on-tape called The Whole Town’s Talking. It was a very whimsical story of Lordor Nordstrom, an immigrant, his Swedish mail-order bride, their descendants and neighbors as they live, love and died in Elmwood Springs, Missouri, from 1889 to 2021. Their final resting place comes alive in the afterlife with mystery, love, laughter as odd things happen in the cemetery. It is such a sweet story and I was reminded that life is such a gift. I’m turning in the audio tonight, so you can check it out at the LJ library tomorrow.

The Eagles’ greatest hits album, released in 1976, has passed Michael Jackson’s Thriller to become history’s best-selling album of all time. Hotel California, released in 1977, is now the third best-selling album of all time. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2016.

Viktor NekrasovAugust was nearly over – the month of apples and falling stars, the last care-free month for the school children. The days were not hot, but sunny and limpidly clear – the first sign of advancing autumn.”  (Obviously, this person was not from South Texas.)

On September 17th, the new service animal policy (i.e., trained service animals, psychological support animals and emotional support animals) from Southwest Airlines goes into effect. It says, “Southwest will only accept the following species of animals in our cabin as trained service animals – dogs, cats and miniature horses.” Hmmm. Cats. I have cats and I promise you that if I asked one of my cats to help me cross the street, they are going to give me the, “you, my friend, are only good for food,” look as they turn and walk away. Miniature horses. Well, that’s a different story. If you research, miniature horses are not uncommon for service roles since they can do everything a dog can plus pull a wheelchair and they’re tall enough to support people that need an additional way to balance themselves. So, listen up. If anybody tries to stop you from bringing your miniature horse that performs specific tasks for your health, safety, or accessibility on a flight, they’re breaking the law.

I just talked to my son who told me that he hadn’t showered because they haven’t had hot water at his dorm since yesterday. I told him that it didn’t matter since it’s pouring rain today. He then assured me that it was ok because he had an airplane bath…a swipe under each wing and the tail. I’m still laughing.

It has now officially been one year since Harvey visited our area. I found the little piece of paper where I wrote down the events of each day, the rain amounts, the water levels and such. When I read it, it made me feel physically ill. It’s been a tough year for so many and for some, it’s not over until they get to live in their homes again. I read that there were 150,000 homes flooded and damage was estimated at around $125-billion. Sigh.

Our largest grocery store chain has begun the process of phasing out the one-time-use plastic bags as more and more people begin to understand the impact on the environment. Kroger Co. says that the goal is to be plastic-free at its nearly 2,800 stores by 2025. They order about 6-billion bags each year. Why wait until 2025. Do it this year or charge for the bags if you don’t bring your own. Do it now.

I’m going bagless. I have been bringing my own bags to stores for years, but sometimes I forget when it’s a trip for just a few items. I decided two weeks ago that unless I need a one-time use bag for trash in my car or if I have too many items to carry, I am asking store clerks to let me carry out my purchases either in my purse, in my hands or in a small, lightweight bag that I’m now carrying in my purse. So far, the response is all positive. Go bagless. See above.

You know you’re getting old when: I walked back in to sit at my desk after spraying the weeds in front of my office. It was a really clear day and I always want the front of my office to look pretty when you visit. (As you have read in this column, I always use vinegar, salt and Dawn dishwashing soap because it’s so much better for the environment than weed killer. The soap causes the vinegar to stick to the weed and the salt drips down and makes the soil less desirable for the weed to return. You should use it too.) It was so hot out that morning and I was dripping wet with sweat, so I thought I would pull my hair up. No hair clips in my desk drawer, just a box of black binder clips, so the hair went up as I said to myself, “What do I care, I won’t see anyone today, anyway.” Yep. It held my hair up. And the Fed-Ex guy didn’t say anything insulting as I signed for a package five minutes later. And then the UPS guy appeared with more school supplies for my daughter and was very courteous, not laughing either. Then, about 30-minutes later some dark black clouds appeared and before I knew it, there were massive amounts of rain. Now, I will have to re-spray the weeds again because I bet it all washed off, but I don’t have the guilt that I would have if I had sprayed with Roundup and it had washed into Oyster Creek.

Hey, those binder clips also work great for attaching a bed sheet to cover and protect your favorite plants this next winter if-and-when it freezes. The clips also make a great keychain for extra keys since the handles pop-off when you squeeze them together.

A federal appeals court ruled that the Trump administration endangered public health by keeping a widely used pesticide on the market despite extensive scientific evidence that even tiny levels of exposure can harm babies’ brains and has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to remove ‘chlorpyrifos’ from sale in the US within 60 days. This pesticide is used to spray apples, citrus and other crops.

My mother moved very quickly back to Waco in May, leaving me with tons of her stuff, so I have spent the past few months cleaning out her house and wondering what I could have done differently to help her to ‘like living here.’ I had entertained her, cooked for her, worked in her yard, taken her to concerts and community functions, all so she would feel like she was a part of it all. Well, her 83rd birthday was last weekend and guess what, I got to meet her new boyfriend when I arrived in Waco. They graduated together. Their reunion was in the spring. It all fits into place now. Hmmm.

Thanks for reading this. I appreciate it. Lisa

  • What I Heard This Week 10-26-2023

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
