What I Heard This Week 10-05-2023

What I Heard This Week October 4, 2023

The Las Vegas Sphere (360 ft. tall), a $2.3 BILLION state-of-the-art music and entertainment venue, opened last weekend with a U2 concert. 18,000 people experienced mind-blowing optical illusions and stunning immersive visuals on the huge wraparound LED screen, which just happens to be the largest LED screen in the world and has the highest resolution. Fans entered several virtual worlds as the band played. The picture I saw from the inside looked like an outdoor concert at dusk. Yet another picture taken from a distance, made it look like a giant snow globe. Construction started in 2018. The fun has started.

Last night I ordered Green Antelope Horn Milkweed for the monarchs. It is a native plant to Texas. Milkweed gets such a bad rap because of that word WEED in the name (it is not a weed) but a beautiful flower. Green and creamy beige flowers with purple accenting the center of each flower, all on a single stem. It’s also known as spider or green milkweed. It feeds monarchs, soldiers (brightly colored, dark orange butterflies) and tropical queens (three sets of tentacles on the caterpillar and more solid color of butterfly), among many other butterflies and pollinators. This has been a hard summer. Be extra kind to our pollinators since nothing is blooming. Bees are attracted to blues and violets, hummingbirds prefer reds and pinks, Butterflies lean towards yellows and oranges, and nighttime pollinators are attracted to night bloomers.

October is Texas Archeology Month, a month-long celebration of Texas’ archeological heritage. In recognition of Texas Archeology Month, Brazoria County Historical Museum will kick-off its Archeological Lecture Series Thursday, October 12th at 6 pm with a presentation by Eleanor Stoddart, Cultural Resources Coordinator for Texas State Parks, who will look at some of the archeology projects currently happening in our local area and give an overview of some of the exciting events planned to celebrate 100 years of Texas State Parks.

Mattel has a new Stevie Nicks Barbie – great voice, sense of style, band member and solo artist, plus first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame TWICE. The doll was designed in honor of Nicks’ 75th birthday, her outfit inspired by the cover of the 1977 album Rumours. $55 unless you buy on resale markets. ☹ Tina Turner, Gloria Estefan, David Bowie, and Elvis Presley are also coming.

A friend was in town and spending the night, so I had made her an evening cocktail using Betty Buzz mixer which I had found at Central Market and Spec’s. I decided to do some research on the brand and found out that actress Blake Lively launched this company – her own sparkling non-alcoholic drink mixers, because she hates the taste of alcohol. The name Betty comes from her grandmother, aunt, and daughter – all named Betty. You will have to ask her where the name Buzz came from. They use glass bottles – not plastic, no artificial sweeteners, only juice, agave syrup and cane sugar. The five flavors are Meyer Lemon Club Soda, Sparkling Grapefruit, Sparkling Lemon-Lime, Ginger Beer, & Tonic. Blake’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, is also an entrepreneur with several investments in small businesses including Aviation Gin. What a good match. He also has a streaming channel called Maximum Effort and since he has an “irrational love” for the alien-life-form ALF from 80’s TV, he is returning him in reruns and in new advertiser-sponsored shorts. (That has nothing to do with G&T, but I thought I would throw it in for those with their own irrational love for ALF.)

Happy 5th anniversary to downtown neighbor, Wine Revue. If you haven’t stopped for a glass of wine or beer, then you should. Autumn also has private parties, great happy hour specials, and can cater for meetings and training sessions, or holiday parties. 219 Parking Way Downtown LJ. 979-248-0803.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Actor Anson Williams of Happy Days is 74. Actor Mark Hamill is 72. Star Wars. Actor Heather Locklear is 62. Actor Catherine Zeta-Jones is 54. Actor Linda Hamilton is 67. Actor Melissa Sue Anderson of Little House on the Prairie is 61. Singer-guitarist Randy Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive is 80. Singer-actor-director Shaun Cassidy is 65. Guitarist Mike Pinera of Iron Butterfly is 75. Singer-guitarist Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad is 75. TV personality Bryant Gumbel is 75. Actor Angie Dickinson is 92. Singer Cissy Houston is 90. Singer Johnny Mathis is 88. Singer Marilyn McCoo is 80. Actor Barry Williams of The Brady Bunch is 69. Actor Fran Drescher is 66. Country singer Marty Stuart is 65.

Dr. Richard Moriarty, retired pediatrician who helped create the bright green Mr. Yuk symbol that warns kids to stay away from poisonous substances, died at 83. He also helped establish and develop the Pittsburgh Poison Center where he served as director. He said the Mr. Yuk symbol was designed by kids for kids, for a poison awareness campaign that began in 1971.

John Warnock, Silicon Valley entrepreneur and computer scientist who helped invent the PDF (Portable Document Format) and co-founded Adobe Systems, died at 82. The PDF transformed the way documents are exchanged, replacing many paper copies in legal, business, and personal communication. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop followed before he stepped down as CEO in 2000. After he retired, he devoted his time to collecting rare books which he scanned and put online at rarebookroom.org.

Sir Michael Gambon, best known for his portrayal of Hogwarts much-loved headmaster Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter, died at 82. He had the greatest voice.

A judge has ruled that Lady Gaga will not have to pay Jennifer McBride the $500,000 reward that was promised for finding her two dogs, after discovering the woman was actually involved in the dognapping. Kroger is testing shopping carts with built-in scales and cameras so you can scan and bag each item as you shop. Some stores are testing check-out without scanning, you just dump your purchases into a bin where sensors add up the tab and tell you what you owe. We are lazy human beings. Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar was carjacked at gunpoint in D.C. about a mile from the Capitol. “You got to keep calm under those situations, and analyze the situation quickly and look around, one gun, a second gun, maybe a third one behind me. You got to stay calm. They wanted the car, sure. They recovered everything,” said Congressman Henry Cuellar. “What really got me, though, was they took my sushi, but anyway, that’s something else. And they did recover the sushi after all.” Ronnie Milsap will play his final Nashville concert this week at age 80. The legendary blind pianist will be joined by Kelly ClarksonLittle Big Town, Parker McCollum, Justin MooreScotty McCreery, Tracy Lawrence, Randy Houser, Sara Evans, Lorrie Morgan, Trace Adkins, Ricky Skaggs, Steven Curtis Chapman and more.

The Velasco Masonic Lodge Fellowship Hall is now available to reserve for parties, family reunions, baby showers or wedding receptions. $300 for 50 guests, a kitchen and large room. 979-233-7643

If you are hanging a picture on a wall, instead of holding the nail (you know what I’m saying), just put a clothespin around the nail and hammer away without the fear of hitting your fingers. Love it. Coca-Cola has released a new flavor called Starlight and apparently it tastes like space. Who can argue with that? Another source says Coca-Cola has released a new limited-edition flavor called Coca-Cola Y3000, which was created with the help of artificial intelligence and is supposed to taste like the future. The Senate has unanimously passed a formal dress code requiring business attire on the chamber floor, including coat, tie, and slacks for men. YES! Let’s get back to looking respectful. Another Florida story: a woman has sued Disney after riding the Humunga Kowabunga water slide which caused “permanent bodily injury” (painful wedgie). Riders are told to cross their legs at the ankles when going down the slide.

Our months of summer heat have been miserable for everyone and everything, everywhere, especially trees. The Arbor Day Foundation says we need to start planting trees, all of us, everywhere, right now. Trees lower air temperatures, absorb carbon, and give off oxygen. It helps our wildlife. Animals have difficulty regulating their body temperatures, which leads to stress, dehydration, heatstroke, and death. What a great rain we are having right now. The trees are so happy. Have a great week.

What I Heard This Week 01-05-2023

What I Heard This Week January 4, 2023

There is nothing I would rather do on a sunny day than work in the flower or vegetable garden. I love mowing, edging, planting – there’s even a tiny bit of twisted enjoyment in weeding. Digging down in the dirt, finding bad roots, especially dollar grass, then expel them from the warm earth, or turn around and plant them in a different location. I love getting my hands dirty. There is equal satisfaction in vegetables or flowers. But today I was reading an article in the Houston Chronicle about annuals (which you must plant these each year), and perennials (a plant that comes back each year, over and over again). Then they talked about biennials. What the heck is a biennial? I couldn’t even pronounce it. It means taking place every other year. Many plants take two years to grow from seed to fruition, then they die. They put their everything into growing stalks and leaves one year, then flowers and fruit the next year. It takes two years to complete their biological life cycle. I was surprised to hear carrots, broccoli, beets, kale, celery, cabbage, brussels sprouts, parsley, onions, parsnips, caraways, leek, fennel, and more are biennial plants. They grow one year, then we pull them to eat… BUT if we leave them in the ground, they bolt or go to seed. Some hollyhocks, Canterbury bells, forget-me-nots, foxglove, stock (one of my favorites because it smells SOOOO good), Sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus), and more… are flowers that reseed themselves the second year.  Interesting. But I would think that growing biennials in South Texas may be a little different.

Jonathan the tortoise is the world’s oldest known living land animal at 190 years old. Jonathan is blind, has no sense of smell, but his hearing is great, and he loves the company of humans. His favorite foods are cabbage, cucumbers, carrots, apples, bananas, and lettuce hearts. His vet, Joe Hollins says, “In spite of his age, Jonathan still has good libido and is seen frequently to mate with Emma and sometimes Fred… animals are often not particularly gender-sensitive!” According to NPR, Jonathan has actually been hailed as a gay icon for some time. In 2017, caretakers discovered during a medical procedure that Frederica, his mate of nearly three decades, was not actually a female as had been thought since the two were first introduced in 1991 – which explains the name Fred, and their lack of offspring. One caretaker describes him as a charming old gentleman.

Happy Birthday, Wally “Red” Johnson. You are loved more than you know, are the topic of many lovely conversations, and a man of many wonders. ❤️

Congratulations to Brazoria County judges Terri and Marc Holder on their retirement. Congratulations to the staff at El Chico on making such a huge mark on our community. New Year’s Eve was their final day of service, and every single table was reserved. We wish each and every member of their staff much success with the new chapters of your lives. Nancy Pearson, we LOVE you. Luby’s told me that they are open until at least February 5th so get on over there and support them while you can. Way too many changes in our sweet community.

Ted Cruz was recently criticizing Joe Biden for taking a family vacation in St. Croix… although it’s hard to read this as I shiver from cold, and not be jealous of the Biden’s, and everyone else that took a tropical vacation during Christmas… I just wonder if Ted Cruz forgot about his Cancun trip during the February 2021 freeze during all the power outages in Texas, as we bundled and blanketed up, using fireplaces for our only source of heat and praying that everyone on the block had a gas stove so they too could eat hot food… has he not forgotten that his nickname became Cancun Cruz? Several things came to my tiny little mind (I know several of you are thinking that and will email me later, so I figured I’ll be the first to say it.) How about the proverb about those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. How about the pot calling the kettle black. How about the word hypocrite?

Barbara Walters, American broadcast journalist and television personality, died at 93. Walters published the book How to Talk with Practically Anybody About Practically Anything in 1970. As of 2008, it had gone through eight printings, sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide, and has been translated into at least six languages. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI died at his home in the Vatican at 95. He stunned the Roman Catholic world in 2013 by becoming the first pope in nearly 600 years to resign. Brazilian born professional “footballer” Pelé, aka Edson Arantes do Nascimento, died at 82. He was named after Thomas Edison and was called the world’s Greatest Living Sport Legend of the 20th century and was also known as the King of Soccer. In 1999, he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and was included in the Time list of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century. In 2000, Pelé was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics and was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century. His 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, which includes friendlies, is recognized as a Guinness World Record. (A soccer friendly is a game or match that does not count.)

A hot fudge sundae and a trashy novel is my idea of heaven. Barbara Walters

TDECU (Texas Dow Employees Credit Union) wants to make a new investment in our community and Lake Jackson, planning a new home branch office on a 5-acre site on Oak Drive behind HEB, with hopes of also adding adjoining community amenities. Their first idea was to move the library to the new location, therefore giving the city of LJ the needed space for expanding city hall and perhaps the police department. Other ideas for the same Oak Drive property include a park, amphitheater, an area for farmer’s markets and other events. Lots of great ideas for our growing downtown 😊 I can’t wait to see how these plans work out for TDECU with the city. Since some of our customers are having a difficult time finding our own downtown office (with all the road construction going on), we will just have to find an even better way for you to get to our office if this happens. Progress! Perhaps breadcrumbs will work. (Since I wrote this, I have heard that after more consideration, TDECU has further plans than just the ones above, now presented to the city…)

A conversation isn’t a competition. Barbara Walters

A 27-year-old Oyster Creek man tried to speed up in order to beat the train at the crossing in the 1200 block of FM 1495, his vehicle was hit by the train, his 12-year-old passenger partially ejected through the windshield and killed. How horrible. Don’t play chicken with the trains. No one wins.

1,600 bats fell to the ground during our recent cold snap (in Houston and Pearland) after they lost their grip and plunged to the pavement, after going into hypothermic shock. Wildlife rescuers picked them up, administered fluids to those that had not died from the fall, and kept them warm in incubators, releasing them this week. 13 bison were killed in a road accident near Yellowstone National Park.  More than 6,000 children and teens were injured or killed in shootings in 2022. A Missouri school district has voted to adopt a 4-day school week. So smart.

My alarm doesn’t have a snooze button. It has paws.

There is nothing better than a good bargain. At least, I believe this to be true. Goodwill, the 120-year-old non-profit has launched Goodwillfinds, so you can now find a huge selection of donations available for purchase online. Or go to ShopGoodwill.com which sells quite a few items by auction. We need to recycle more, and dump into landfill less.

To begin with, let me give you a little history. I had just finished reading an article that said every person writing a check should use a gel pen because it’s harder to wash the ink out of the check and change the information. Hmmm. I was not aware that you could wash a check!  So, working at the office this past week while we were closed, I was very determined one evening to finish a certain amount of work before I went home. I had just sealed up an envelope from a credit card company, when I decided that I should scotch-tape it shut where no one could steal my check and “wash it.” I’ve never done that before unless I thought licking the glue to close it wasn’t working… I put three strips of tape and made it nearly impossible to get into. Hah, that will show them! Then, as I stuck the stamp on the envelope, I realized that I had put the tear-off portion of the invoice backwards. Hmmm. It was quite difficult to get the check out. I taped it closed very well. So, I had to cut it open from the bottom of the envelope. Sometimes I’m such a waste of my own time.

Listen up on this one. I would really hate you to miss this fun. Two really nice kids have started a waffle truck, Scrumdillyumptious Honey B’s Waffles. They will be hosted by Wine Revue at 219 Parking Way in downtown Lake Jackson on January 7th (this Saturday) from 10am to 4pm. Just imagine gourmet Belgian waffles, breakfast sandwiches and dessert waffles, along with perhaps, a Mimosa or two (champagne and orange juice) from Wine Review. I can’t think of a better way to spend my Saturday. Have a great weekend. Thank you again for reading and shopping with us. WE APPRECIATE YOU SO MUCH.

What I Heard This Week! October 25, 2018

What I Heard This Week November 1, 2018

The FDA has approved the first drug in nearly 20-years to treat the flu. The oral medication, Xofluza, is designed to reduce symptoms and shorten the flu’s duration for people who have developed their flu symptoms in the past 48-hours.

The husband and wife that fell to their deaths recently at Yosemite National Park were apparently taking a selfie. Taft Point allows visitors to walk to the edge of a vertigo-inducing granite ledge that doesn’t have a railing. Park visitors discovered the couple’s camera and tripod near the ledge the next morning. Hikers who had seen the couple the day before said that the woman seemed very comfortable close to the edge.

In a recent auction, five bottles of wine sold for nearly $2-million total, each joining the list of the priciest bottles in history.

In January of this year, a bottle of the world’s most expensive vodka was stolen from a bar in Copenhagen. The bottle was on loan to the bar, uninsured and estimated to be worth $1.3-million. The bottle was covered in about 6.6 pounds of gold, 6.6 pounds of silver and the cap was encrusted with diamonds in the shape of the Russian Imperial Eagle with the actual bottle made of bullet-proof glass. The bottle was later found empty at a construction site. Hmmm.

California Governor Jerry Brown has been named executive chairman of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a group that measures ‘manmade threats to human existence.’ The planet is in one of its most dangerous times since the atomic bomb was dropped and Brown stated, “it is crucial to wake people up to the dangers that still persist.” You know, little things like nuclear weapons, climate change (have you paid attention to our weather lately? Turn off your lights, drive less, switch to LED, plan a meatless meal one day a week, NY and London are already thinking of solutions for potential rising tides), pollution (Google: Great Pacific Garbage Patch, recycle), oceanic dead zones (146 dead zones were found in the world’s oceans, caused by high levels of chemicals in the waters. North America’s Gulf Coast has a high concentration of dead zones, which causes fish to become unable to reproduce), explosive population growth (the human population is growing to a point that our society and systems can’t handle), deforestation (use recycled paper and plant a tree), loss of biodiversity (bees and butterflies) and the list goes on and on. Again, I repeat (with a sarcastic edge.) What if it’s a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing?

In Time Magazine said that there was a tiny little article that said there was a study published showing that climate change may make beer more expensive. eee-gads. I had to know more. Nature Plants says that the price of beer could double with climate change, as droughts and extreme temperatures will cause barley yields to drop. If this doesn’t get your attention, then nothing will. 😊

Venice, Italy was hit with a high tide this week, leaving about 70% of the city covered in 5ft. of water. There was a combination of more rain in two days than they’d had in 3 months and the highest tide in years, then news stated because of rising sea levels, the Venetians could expect this again in the future.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released in 1998 which makes it now 20 years old. Hard to believe. Just think. Those kids have kids reading the series now. These books brought so much joy to my own kids that if asked, I would suggest this as the “best” gift you could give a child. My 19-year-old daughter agrees since she has read the whole series four times and is listening to the audio books right now while she works in the studio for architecture at college. Put it on your Christmas list.

We are the people our parents warned us about. Jimmy Buffet

In 1955, Dorcas Reilly was a Campbell Soup kitchen supervisor. She has died at the age of 92. This probably doesn’t mean much to you except for the fact that she created the dish that every single one of us has eaten on Thanksgiving for as long as we can remember. Green beans and cream of mushroom soup topped with crunchy fried onions. Yep. Green Bean Casserole. That dish was among hundreds that were created during her time at Campbells (1940’s to 1988 when she retired,) but it has remained the most popular recipe to ever come out of the corporate kitchen. I’m going to make it gluten free for my son this Thanksgiving because I was able to find a can of gluten-free onion rings at Aldi and I’ll use homemade cream of mushroom soup that I have put up in the freezer that is wheat-free. I will make “good mother” points for this, I can assure you.

Found on Facebook: Didn’t win the lottery, but I did wake up in the best country in the world and that’s kind of the same thing.

When someone says they have 20/20 vision, what exactly does that mean? Well, that means you’re able to see an object at a distance of 20 ft. For someone with 20/60 vision to see clearly, they must be 20 ft. from an object that a person with normal vision can see at 60 ft. It’s not unusual for the average Major League Baseball player to have 20/12 vision. That could be one of the reasons they’re so good at aiming their bat at ball racing towards them at triple-digit speed.

While I was piddling around this week I came across a list. ‘21 Books That Everyone Should Read’. 1. War and Peace – legendary masterpiece.  2. Song of Solomon – Nobel Prize winning author.  3. The Fountainhead.  4. Ulysses.  5. The Shadow of the Wind. 6. The Lord of the Rings. 7. The Satanic Verses. 8. Don Quixote – “one of the best books of all time”.  9. The Golden Compass – fantasy tale. 10. Catch-2211. 1984.  12. The Kite Runner. 13. Little Women.  14. The Cloud Atlas. 15. The Picture of Dorian Gray 16. Lolita – funny.  17. The Help – beautiful & funny.  18. The Liar’s Club. 19. Moby-Dick20. Gravity’s Rainbow. 21. The Handmaid’s Tale.  These are just some reading ideas that will make you smarter, funnier and prettier – ok, not prettier, but definitely well-read.

It takes no more time to see the good side of life than to see the bad. Jimmy Buffett

Rowan Atkinson (63) is back in Johnny English Strikes Again. The official trailer is a hoot but maybe they’re just showing all the funny parts. “When the identity of every field agent in the UK is exposed, they have no choice but to bring Johnny out of retirement.” The British comedian say he was excited to once again play the spy who’s not as good as he thinks he is. Emma Thompson plays the prime minister.

Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton and her husband of 27 years, Shannon Kelley, were recently divorced.

I was at H-E-B last night and found myself in front of the freezer section staring (again) at the frozen pizzas and wondering (again) which one was the best pizza to pick up for office lunches on the days I forget to bring my leftovers. I didn’t leave the store with a pizza.  Imagine my surprise when I opened The Chronicle this morning and saw their list of the ‘Top’ grocery store frozen pizzas. In repeating this information to you, I’m going to list just their #1 pizza choice in each of the four categories. *Classic Brands – Freschetta Naturally Rising Crust Pepperoni Pizza. *Fancy Pizzas – Bola Pizza Lamb.  *Tons of Toppings – Home Run Inn Deluxe Pizza and *Gluten-Free Pies – Against the Grain Nut-Free Pesto Pizza. Hope this helps you in your own selection. Our family favorite is still a package of Stonefire Naan bread, then we build our own with spinach, artichokes, green onions, pesto, fresh mozzarella and mushrooms.

People who think too much before they act don’t act too much. Jimmy Buffet

On October 2nd, a dwarf planet was located by astronomers far beyond Pluto. Its official name is 2015 TG387 but it earned the nickname ‘Goblin’ because it was first observed around Halloween 2015.

Book review: I just finished the 2008 book, Barbara Walters, Audition: A Memoir. She was the first woman to co-host an American news program in 1974 and in 1976 she became the first female co-anchor of a network evening news with Harry Reasoner. She fought many battles being a woman in a man’s world (when Frank McGee was host at NBC, he refused to do joint interviews with Walters unless he was given the first three questions) but she certainly paved the way for today’s women in broadcasting. It was a good read and I recommend it.

Pollinator Palooza, Butterflies & Bees, is set for Saturday November 3, from 10-4pm at Quintana Beach County Park Discovery Event Center. There will be a walk-in butterfly enclosure, crafts and activities, caterpillar & chrysalis exhibits, pollinator gardening tips, Brazoria County Beekeepers live bee hive display, local honey for sale and free milkweed seed while supplies last. 979-233-1461.

What I Heard This Week! October 25, 2018

What I Heard This Week October 24, 2018

Remember that I know a little about a lot of things. Just enough to make me dangerous.

A top Idaho wildlife official has resigned after emailing a picture of himself smiling with a family of four dead baboons propped in front of him that he had just killed during a hunting trip to Africa. I’m a firm believer that you have to eat what you kill, so do you eat baboon? The man and his wife had also killed a giraffe, a leopard, an impala, a sable antelope, a waterbuck, a kudu, a warthog, a gemsbok and an eland during their Africa trip. Hmmm.

Caroll Spinney, the actor who has played Big Bird and the lovably disgruntled Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street since 1969, is retiring after almost 50 years. Spinney says, “Playing Big Bird is one of the most joyous things of my life.” For us, too. Thank you, Mr. Spinney for giving us so many years of sweet innocence for our children and grandchildren.

Have you voted? Early voting started on 10-22 or you can vote on Election Day 11-6. Your choice.

Florida police officers recovered a stolen van filled with Krispy Kreme doughnuts. The store manager then donated the entire cargo to the officers, who ate some and handed out the rest to the homeless.

Two high school students in Sacramento, California allegedly used their grandparent’s ashes to make cookies then took them to school and passed them out to their classmates. Police are investigating the incident but say that it would not be considered poisoning because cremated human remains are not toxic. So, was it a crime? It’s just plain weird in my book. What kind of child would even think of doing this.

Disney’s new ticketing system is here. Ticket prices will vary from day to day since many factors will play into the final cost, including length of stay, Florida residency, park-hopping ability, and what month it is.

More than 225 cats were seized from a home in Spring after they were found in poor condition. Yikes, I’m not sure what that means but, 225 cats. I have two – Sully & Winnie. I can’t in my wildest dreams imagine what you would do with 225 of them. I already spend a fortune just on litter and food. Crazy.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this winter will be 1 percent colder than last year. Which means more electricity, which means more $$$.

My birdfeeder has seen better days but it’s a really nice big birdfeeder so with all the recent rains, the squirrels and racoons, the folding lid fell off, so I decided to save the birdfeeder’s life. The nice people at Home Depot cut the cedar boards for me and I marched home to do the repairs, only to find that I couldn’t get my rachet screwdriver to accept a bit. I took it personally thinking I wasn’t quite smart enough or capable of working a screwdriver, so I took it to Lowe’s where I had purchased it and asked to please show me what I was doing wrong. It wasn’t me. They couldn’t get it to work either, so they gave me a brand new one, no questions asked. Many thanks to Carmen, Stephen and Angela. That’s why I always buy Kobalt now. Thanks, guys.

Join the Museum of Natural Science at The Center for the Arts and Sciences on Saturday October 27th at 11am for a slimy, wormy morning of crafts. Make an earthworm house, get an earthworm treat for the birds and maybe a pet earthworm to take home that will need no tending. Prepare to get slimed.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Broadcast journalist Chris Wallace is 71. Actress singer Susan Anton is 68. “Where there’s Muriel smoke, there’s fire.” Actor Hugh Jackman is 50. Actor Adam Rich is 50. Nicholas Bradford, the youngest son on the television series Eight Is Enough. Actor Kirk Cameron is 48. Growing Pains. Actress Joan Cusack is 56. Actor Luke Perry is 52. Fashion designer Ralph Lauren is 79.  Musician Paul Simon is 77. One of our greatest songwriters and one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. His final concert was this month and was performed very close to where he was raised in NY.

Musician Sammy Hagar is 71. Van Halen. Singer Marie Osmond is 59. Actress Kate Walsh is 51. Dr. Addison Montgomery on the ABC television dramas Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Actor Caleb McLaughlin is 17. Stranger Things. TV personality Arleen Sorkin is 63. Days of our Lives. Rapper Eminem is 46. I told my son recently, that years ago when I first started hearing the name Eminem, I thought they were saying M&M, like the candy. Gage laughed at me, but I can remember thinking that and it made sense to me then (and still does.)

Singer Jackson Browne is 70. TV personality Sharon Osbourne is 66. Country singer Scotty McCreery is 25. American Idol. Entertainer Ben Vereen is 72. Country singer Tanya Tucker is 60. Pro Football Hall of Fame Brett Favre is 49. Actress Angela Lansbury is 93. Actress Suzanne Somers is 72. After breast cancer and a mastectomy, Somers had non-traditional reconstruction. The way I understand it, they took fat from her stomach, took out stem cells, separated them, cleaned them, discarded weak ones, took the strong ones and put them in a small amount of her harvested fat, then injected that fat into the breast until they made it the size of her other breast; it has feeling, it’s soft, and there are no scars. Wow. I think it’s the most incredible thing to happen in breast cancer.

Peggy Sue Gerron Rackham, the Texas woman who inspired the 1958 Buddy Holly song, ‘Peggy Sue’ and ‘Peggy Sue Got Married’, has died in Lubbock at age 78. Gerron attended high school in Lubbock, Texas where she met Holly and his friends. The song was originally going to be ‘Cindy Lou’ but the drummer in the band was trying to impress Peggy Sue, so he got Holly to change the name. It must have worked because Peggy Sue married the drummer (but they later divorced.)

Autumn Barrier, the owner of Wine Revue, will be having her Second Storm Silver Linings 6th Annual Auction to raise money for breast cancer awareness on Thursday 10-25 from 7-11pm at 219 Parking Way in LJ. There will be live and silent auctions of unique “boob” art (you have to see it to understand) and handmade jewelry. If you’ve been meaning to drop by the new wine bar…aahhh, it’s a perfect time.

I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you.

Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley will launch a food bank next year in Nashville. It’s their way of giving back to the town where they live, is called The Store and will be designed just like a regular supermarket. Good people doing good things.

Having just left H-E-B with three large pumpkins, I am reminded of this recipe for Pumpkin Dip. It’s simple and everyone always loves it. Take 8-ounces of softened cream cheese, 2-cups of confectioner’s sugar, 1-cup of canned pumpkin, 1-teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1-teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, ½-teaspoon of ground ginger, ½-cup heavy cream. Beat the cream cheese, heavy cream and sugar until light and creamy. Add the pumpkin and spices. Stir. Refrigerate until ready to serve with ginger snaps, graham crackers, and apples. You can add 8-ounces of Heath Toffee Bits if you want to be fancy but it’s good without it.

Hazelnut Spread M&M’s, with a chocolaty, nutty filling similar to Nutella will be on grocery shelves in April. I must be hungry because I’m only writing about food right now.

Texas singer-songwriters Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett will open for country music icon George Strait during his concert-only performance on Sunday, March 17, the final night of the 2019 Rodeo. The remaining concert lineup will be announced Jan. 3, 2019 and tickets on sale Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019.

Something in House Beautiful caught my eye. Go to: TheFloralSociety.com. Enter. Go to Individual Seed Packets. They’re so pretty and very unusual. Madame Butterfly Snapdragon. Chocolate Sunflower. Zinderella Peach Zinnia, Watermelon Sweet Pea. I just can’t decide. Chocolate Sunflower for sure. And they have tutorials on flower arranging. Wish I had seen the tutorial on the boutonniere making before I made the one for my daughter’s date last year. It was beautiful, but it DID NOT even last through the picture taking. Luckily, I had a silk one already made and waiting in the car.  Just in case. Phew. Girl Scout rule. Always be prepared.

Bob Dylan performed last Sunday evening at Smart Financial Centre in Sugarland and my son wanted to go so we made sure that it happened. We were lucky to find $32 tickets because there’s no time like the present. Dylan is, of course, a huge talent, but he never even acted like he knew there was an audience sitting out there. He was dressed really cool and can now say I’ve seen Bob Dylan but other than that…

Bids will be taken online, by phone or in person beginning 11/1, should you want to own artifacts or mementos that belonged to the first human to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong. Many pieces that went with him to the moon including bits of a wing and propeller from the 1903 Wright Brothers Flyer, his Boy Scout cap and much more. A series of auctions will end November 2019.

A 12-pound piece of the moon that fell to the Earth as a lunar meteorite and was found in a remote area of Northwest Africa last year, has sold at auction for $612,000. The meteorite is composed of six fragments that fit together like a puzzle. With this knowledge I think that Neil Armstrong may do OK with his auction.

Do you have any Christmas traditions in your family? Well, you should. Here is a tradition you can start that involves so much excitement, magic and just plain fun. Very soon, the Brazosport Center for the Arts & Sciences’ Elizabethan Madrigal Feast will transport guests to The Warwick Castle in Renaissance England aka small coastal town of Clute, Texas. As Queen Elizabeth I and her court arrive, you can bring friends and family to join the Earl of Warwick, a rag-tag cast of Shakespearean actors, dancers and singers in period costumes and enjoy a delicious three-course gourmet feast. 979-265-7661. I’ll see you there. I’ll be in the kitchen helping serve your dinner and dessert each evening. It’s a tradition in our family that if you can’t sing and dance then you better find some gloves and prepare for scullery work.

Today is the last day for one of The Source Weekly’s best. Tom Aucoin is retiring after almost 18 years with our office family. He came to work with us back in 2001 to “fill in” when we were in one of our “dire needs” and just never left. I can’t even find that he ever filled out an application, he’s just always been here – without fail. Well, except when there’s a Jimmy Buffet concert or working his fireworks stand on 4th of July or New Year’s. Every Wednesday afternoon as we finish proofing the paper, he says, “Another good week. Nice paper, girls,” then he empties a few trash cans, afterwards peeking his head around my office door and reminding me with a big smile, “Don’t forget the carrier checks.” Thank you, Tom. Thank you for helping raise my children and for being the “throw down” male in a sea of women. You better show up with iced tea for our birthday luncheons. We love you. We will miss you.

What I Heard This Week! September 6, 2018

What I Heard This Week September 5, 2018

J.J. Watt originally planned to raise $200,000 to help the rebuilding process after Harvey last year. The Houston Texan star (and clearly the ‘star’ in all our hearts) now says he has distributed the $41.6 MILLION that his foundation raised. I have goosebumps up and down my arms while typing this. The funds have already been used to clean up more than 600 homes, distribute more than 26 million meals and provide health care for more than 6,500 people. He’s done his homework and found legitimate organizations that helped carry out his plans for rebuilding. Modern Day Saint.

In memory of 9-11: “A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we’re the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.” President George W. Bush

Did you know that there is a ‘Texas’ Pledge of Allegiance? It is as follows: “Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.” It has come to my attention that you can sign a form at the beginning of the school year that allows your child to ‘sit it out’ for the US Pledge of Allegiance and the ‘Texas’ pledge? Hmmm.

Nothing great is ever achieved without enduring much. St. Catherine of Siena

There were so many people parking in front of my office last evening, then unloading their dogs and walking to the right down Parking Way, out of my view. Finally, someone I knew was getting out of their car, so I asked. Seems that The Wine Revue in beautiful downtown LJ was having ‘Pooches on the Porch.’ I may have to get a dog.

Billy Graham has 6-rules of living. The article was published in Reader’s Digest last month and if everyone would not only read the rules but also practice them, our world would be a perfect place.  1. Make it your goal to live at peace with others. 2. Avoid revenge. 3. Guard your tongue. 4. Never repay evil with evil. 5. Treat others as you’d want them to treat you. 6. Practice the power of forgiveness.

Thank you to Ninfa at First state Bank LJ for helping me get my new debit card. I’m sorry I lost the old one. In my own defense, I was left unsupervised for a short period of time.

A Salt Lake City unlicensed home daycare owner was arrested after breaking a baby’s legs when she slammed the 10-month old child on a bathroom floor because _______ (you can fill in the blank here because no matter, I can’t think of a just cause.) She admits slamming the child feet-first and said that she would rather be deported to Mexico than go to jail. Hmmm.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 2.29-million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in 2017. That’s nearly a 10% increase.  Health officials were especially concerned by the 67% jump in gonorrhea cases since 2013 because the bacterial infection has become resistant to all antibiotics except ceftriaxone. They expect that it’s only a matter of time before super-resistant strains will emerge in the US. In other words, if you are having unprotected sex, then you are stupid.

Contrary to what we have read in the past, and now according to a new ‘massive’ study, co-authored by 512 researchers from 243 institutions, the optimal amount of alcohol someone should consume is ‘none.’ Guess I won’t need the dog, after all. See above.

RECENT BIRTHDAYS: Jazz musician Branford Marsalis is 58. Actress Melissa McCarthy is 48. Actor Macaulay Culkin is 38. Country singer Brian Kelley is 33. Florida Georgia Line. Comedian actress Lily Tomlin is 79. Singer Barry Gibb is 72. Singer Gloria Estefan is 61. Actor G.W. Bailey is 74. Staff Sergeant Luther Rizzo in M*A*S*H. Actor Paul Reubens is 66. Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Actress Diana Scarwid is 63. Inside Moves. Mommie Dearest. Silkwood.

Talk-show host Craig Kilborn is 56. Actress Marlee Matlin is 53. Actor comedian Dave Chappelle is 45. Ahchoo in Mel Brooks‘ Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Actor Rupert Grint is 30. Harry Potter. Actor Steve Guttenberg is 60. 1984 Police Academy. Supposedly there is a new Police Academy film in the making.

Actress Mitzi Gaynor is 87. Singer Beyoncé Knowles is 37. Actor comedian Kyle Mooney is 34. SNL. Comedian actor Bob Newhart is 89. Actor William Devane is 79. Knots Landing. Actor Michael Keaton is 67.  Batman. Actress Raquel Welch is 78. We all remember the image of her in that doe-skin bikini that became best-selling posters, then turned her into a sex symbol. She still looks better than fabulous.

According to Wiktionary: Wet Willy (plural wet willies) (slang) A prank whereby a spit-moistened finger is inserted into an unsuspecting person’s ear, often with a slight twisting motion. See below.

Let’s see if I can get this one right. It’s hard to see what I’m typing when I laugh this hard. A man in Florida was arrested after allegedly “giving his girlfriend a wet willy while he was belligerent.” The girlfriend had allegedly come home and found the man drunk on the living room floor. The man and his girlfriend then left and went to a friend’s house where “he continued to drink and was belligerent.” On the way home, he grabbed her arm and gave her a wet willy. He was arrested on a battery charge. He says he wasn’t drunk. So, you laughing yet? I bet you are at least smiling.

Sawdust is man glitter.

Coming to Smart Financial Centre: Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Willie Nelson & Family, Roy Orbison The Hologram Tour, Marina McBride, and Mannheim Steamroller. I just saw Tony Bennett there and you should have heard him sing ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘I left My Heart in San Francisco.’ Then he wooed us with ‘How Do You Keep the Music Playing?’  He still has what it takes.

Instead of a sign that says, Do Not Disturb, I need one that says Already Disturbed. Proceed with Caution.

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.”President George W. Bush

A&M opened the season with their new $7.5 million-a-year coach, Jimbo Fisher after ditching Kevin Sumlin to bring Fisher from Florida State.  For those bad at math, that’s $75-million over a 10-year period. Hmmm. What exactly does that say about the priorities of our universities. What exactly does that say about the priorities of our society? Sigh.

The Big Bang is a scientific theory about how the universe started, and then made the stars and galaxies as we see them today. The Big Bang Theory TV show will call it quits after their 12th season. It is promised that, “the series finale will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic close.”

Just in case you didn’t get a chance to watch, Leonard Botello IV, owner and pit master of Truth BBQ in Brenham, did a great job on the finale of ‘Chopped Grill Masters’ but failed to win the $50,000 grand prize. Dang. But, he is still No. 1 on our list and in the Top Ten of Texas Monthly’s “Top 50 Barbecue Joints in Texas.” It doesn’t get any better than that.

The Harris County man who put a 23-month-old toddler in scalding water and stomped on the child because he had a dirty diaper and cried, was sentenced to 26 years in prison. Not long enough. The water was so hot that the child has permanent scarring.

‘Deathtrap’ opens this weekend at the Center for the Arts and Sciences, Dow Arena Theatre. The story is a success of Broadway history, full of thrills and laughter. Friday is opening night and I’m making cookies. Be a part of it. Mature audiences, please.  979-265-7661. I can make suggestions on how to have a good time, but you need to pick up your phone or computer and get your own tickets. 😊

School officials saw a video of a middle school teacher that she had posted to her private Facebook account. The problem is that the teacher moonlights as a pole-dancer and has now been suspended ‘with’ pay pending the outcome of an investigation because the school district’s policy says, “employees are role models who are responsible for their public conduct even when they are not performing their job duties.” My question is which school official saw the video. Hmmm.

George Clooney tops the Forbes 2018 list of highest-paid actors with $239-million in pre-tax earnings. This also includes the upcoming sale of Casamigos Tequila, which Clooney co-founded plus earnings from endorsements and older movies. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson came in second with $124-million pretax. Forbes says Johnson has a huge social media following that helped him nearly double his 2017 earnings. Robert Downey Jr. was third with a measly $81-million, Chris Hemsworth with $64.5-million and Jackie Chan with an embarrassing $45.5-million.

I don’t have grey hair. I have wisdom highlights.

As I sat at my computer yesterday working on this column, a hummingbird flew right into the big plate glass window at the front of my building. I rushed out and found it twitching and fighting for life. Back to the kitchen for a towel. As I opened the front door to pick it up, I questioned whether I planned mouth-to-mouth or a good hard rub like you do puppies the moment they are born. I just don’t know. Anyway, I stepped out and the tiny, beautiful creature came up struggling, but finally flying. She was a little unsteady like she had had one too many, then she found her mojo and disappeared over the top of my roof. It reminds me that it’s time to put out hummingbird feeders. I have one outside my kitchen window and three hummers were fighting for nectar even in the rain on Labor Day. My daughter and I were working on a project at the kitchen table and watched. Such a pleasure. Easy and inexpensive nectar solution is one-part sugar with four-parts boiling water, stirring until the sugar is entirely dissolved. There is no need for red food coloring. Let it cool to room temperature and store in a CLEAN, sealed container. Please make sure that there isn’t any trace of another food in the container because sugar water can be easily fermented by exposure to yeast and that’s not good for the bird’s tiny system. I picked up a new feeder at Walmart for $7.00 that looks like it’s dishwasher safe which doesn’t really matter because IT IS going in the dishwasher this evening when I change the water, even if it’s not dishwasher safe.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. You make it fun for me to keep reading and repeating. Lisa

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
