What I Heard This Week! 09-24-2020

What I Heard This Week September 24, 2020

A man walked into an animal shelter in Michigan hoping to adopt rescued chickens to add to his family’s small farm, when he happened to see a small dog whose cleft lip reminded him of his two-year-old son, who was also born with a cleft lip. He said that he had never seen a dog with a cleft lip before. The puppy had come to the shelter from 1000 miles away in Mississippi the week before, and the staff was worried that she was not adoptable. The man called his wife and she told him to adopt the puppy immediately. Two days later, after a bunch of happy tears, Lacey the rescue puppy, found a new home and Bentley, a boy of her own. Now just think…what are the chances of that puppy being shipped to that animal shelter and that dad just happening by at that moment in time, looking for chickens. There just are no accidents. Bentley and Lacey take naps together in the dog bed.

Now that I have lived through a plague, I understand why most renaissance paintings are of chubby women laying around without a bra.

Some scientists believe that scrubbing your body head to toe is not healthy, so they say to just focus on your ‘bits,’ which would be underarms, groin and feet, and just rinse the rest of your body with water. Scrubbing with soap can lead to problems like eczema and other skin conditions because you risk destroying useful bacteria and microbes that help lower your immunity to certain viruses.Over the weekend, I cleaned the office, rebuilt some of my garden beds, dug upthe rest of the sweet potatoes, planted new jalapeno plants, cleaned some of the garage and yard at home, then cooked dinner. In other words, I sweated. My daughter and I wanted to watch the rest of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest after dinner, so we climbed into my bed with a laptop and I fell asleep before the movie was over. The next morning, I felt noticeably confidentthat is was ok to soap on more than just my bits.😊

Pretty wild how we used to eat cake after someone had blown on it…good times.

A 35-year-old former dentist who was filmed extracting a patient’s tooth while standing on a hoverboard, was convicted on 46 felony and misdemeanor counts, including medical assistance fraud, scheme to defraud, illegal practice of dentistry and reckless endangerment. He was found to have performed anesthesia thousands of times without training or consent, he stole money from Medicaid and embezzled from his bosses.  At his sentencing, the judge said, “I think what you did was so outrageous, narcissistic and crazy. So, I forgive you for all that, but there’s obviously a high-priced lesson that you’re going to have to learn.” Evidence against him was overwhelming, supported in great detail by his own texts, photos and videos. Hmmm. He apologized for his actions and will spend 12 years in jail.

More than half of US states are reporting a rise in COVID cases and the nation has now passed the milestone 200,000 deaths this year. Since I hear this all the time, “Quit worrying about it, more people die from the flu each year,” I think I will give you the actual numbers. According to the CDC, 80,000 people died of flu last winter in the US, the highest death toll in 40 years. The number of deaths was nearly twice as much as what health officials previously considered a bad year. So, wear your mask.

I see people around my age mountain climbing and zip lining, and here I am feeling good about myself because I got my leg through my underwear without losing my balance.True.

Big Tex has been taken out of quarantine and lowered into position at the Texas State Fair, where hehas been standing since 1952. This year he is wearing a 7’ by 4’face mask (a little bit bigger than a twin-size mattress), he has a new belt buckle and refurbished hat. This is a different year, so there will be a Big Tex Photo Drive Thru and a Big Tex Fair Food Drive Thru.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died from complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer at age 87. She was only the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court. My kids both know her as the Honorable R.B.G. She burst into popular culture at age 80, and became an internet sensation after a law student proclaimed her the Notorious R.B.G., a play on the nickname of a famous rapper, Notorious B.I.G. She was the subject of two movies — a fictionalized drama of her early life in which she juggled work and motherhood, and a documentary that let women into her personal life as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She believed,“you can disagree without being disagreeable.”Thank you for your integrity and fight to make an equal world, not only for our daughters, but our  sons as well. Gender equality.

Robert W. Gore, inventor of the polymer form that provided for waterproof Gore-Tex fabric, died at 83. The father of Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, died at 94. William Henry Gates II was an Army veteran, founding partner in a Seattle law firm and was critical in starting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where he served as co-chair. Former Globetrotter, David “Smokey” Gaines, died at 80. Lou Brock, St. Louis Cardinals legend, died at 81. He was known for stealing base which led the Cardinals to two World Series victories. Local community leader Dottie Duby died. She was a ball of fire, doing an amazing amount of good for the people of our community.

In Oregon, a man realized that the fires were coming towards his home, but as he drove away, he found he was trapped by downed trees and flames from 70 mph winds. Suddenly everything around him was on fire. He left his car and headed towards the river and hung out about an hour under a concrete bridge, up to his waist in water. Then he realized that all the vegetation under the bridge was starting to burn, so he headed downstream. He grabbed a green plastic Adirondack chair he found setting on the bank of the river right next to a 24-pack of Rolling Rock beer. What are the chances, but there was one single beer left in the box. He found a ledge of a rock jetting into the wide spot of the river and used the chair as a shield from the embers that night. The next morning, he put his t-shirt over his mouth and stayed close to the surface of the water where the air appeared cleaner. Later he found his car had survived, but his house did not. I was blubbering like a baby as I watched the video of his two sons discovering that he had survived. “If there’s anybody who can survive that situation, it’s my dad,” said his son. “He’s smart, can think on his feet and is very resourceful.” As he sheltered, he took scary as hell pictures, too.

Deja vuHurricane Sally hit exactly 16 years after Hurricane Ivan, even making landfall at the same spot.

Interesting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that we should not be wearing masks with one-way valves. These types of masks are intended for use in construction because they reduce heat and moisture, making them more comfortable for long periods, but this design does not prevent the spread of infectious diseases. We are wearing masks to prevent droplets from traveling into the air when a person coughs, sneezes or talks. With a valve, droplets from the wearer are expelled into the air. Some airlines have already banned flyers from wearing masks with valves on flights. Cloth masks are best.

The Keen company is known for outdoor shoes, gear, and accessories. They have now installed mask vending machines in Portland Oregon, Palo Alto California, London, and Tokyo. The vending machines are located outside (safer location) and it removes the person-to-person contact of sale. It is open 24/7 and more vending machines are coming. Wish I had thought of this. You can even get one with artwork by Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead.

Election Day is November 3. Do you have a current Voter’s Registration Certificate/Card in your purse, wallet, or kitchen drawer? If you cannot remember, then put down this paper and go look. Check the dates. Check out your address and other information to make sure it is current and not expired. If you are not sure you are registered to vote, go to VoteTexas.Gov. See: Am I Registered? If you are not registered, you must fill out a voter registration application as ASAP. You must do this today. A voter’s application must be filled out and mailed in at least 30 days before the election date, to have time for it to be processed and accepted by the County Voter Registrar. 800-252-VOTE (8683) for questions or you can register by mail by obtaining an application from your county Voter Registrar’s office, or pick up an application at all the libraries, government offices, or high schools. Did you read that? It is as easy as stopping by the library and picking up an application.

A firefighter died on the El Dorado Fire in Southern California, which started with sparks from a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used during a gender reveal party. Not the first time this has happened. Gender reveal parties with smoke are not a good idea. Ever. No balloons either. A New York City subway derailed, after witnesses saw a man throwing construction debris onto the tracks. Texas now has 16.6 million voters, an increase of more than 400,000 since March. And since 2016, Texas has added 1.5 million voters to its rolls. A woman suspected of sending an envelope containing ricin, a highly toxic poison compound, addressed to the White House, has been arrested as she tried to enter the US from Canada. Authorities are also investigating similar packages mailed to different addresses in Texas that may be connected to the same sender. I wonder who in Texas…

It is called the Dooms day Glacier because it is among those glaciers in West Antarctica, most influenced by climate change. A new study has found that the ice shelves supporting this glacier and its neighbor, the Pine Island Glacier, are beginning to fissure and crack, are in the early stages of disintegration, therefore tearing apart. If they melt, they have the potential of adding about 10 feet to global sea level rise. Does the word doomsday alert you to anything negative or give any hints as to what is coming?

A September 3rd video showed a Budget rental truck backing into the parking lot of a spa in California, exiting the truck, then tossing bags and bags full of unopened envelopes and packages from the US Postal Service, off the truck into the lot, then he drove off. They said that US Postal Service employees were not involved the dumping. The post office is a public service, not a business. They deserve a break.

I am not sure I understand, but I will repeat what I know. Netflix is teasing about an event on September 25th on Netflix’s YouTube and Facebook pages. The cast of “Father of the Bride” is returning for a special event to benefit World Central Kitchen. It would be sweet to see Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Martin Short and the rest. That is all I know.

A study from China found that the proportion of COVID-19 patients who wore glasses was much lower than that of the general population. So, practice after me…COVID makes less passes, at girls that wear glasses.😊 Have a beautiful weekend and thanks for reading this. Sell something! Buy something.

Former US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, recently remarried for the fourth time, which also happened to be on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. This time it was to Dr. Anca Faur, his 63-year-old, long-time companion (who looks like she wants to be 27), has a PhD in chemical engineering, and is now the executive vice president of Aldrin’s company, Buzz Aldrin Ventures.  He was first married to Joan Ann Archer in 1954 until divorcing in 1974. The next year he married Beverly Van Zile; they divorced after three years. His third marriage was to Lois Driggs Cannon in 1988 on Valentine's Day, divorcing 23 years later. Looks like he hasn’t given up on ‘love’ quite yet. He has sued two of his children and his former business manager claiming they stole money from him and are slandering his legacy, and that they also undermined his "personal romantic relationships" by forbidding him from getting married. His children say he is also spending money at an alarming rate. Sounds like those children are out of luck. There is a new sheriff in town and her name is MRS. Aldrin. ☹ Notes: Aldrin is also a strong advocate for human exploration of Mars. In 2002, he escaped assault charges after punching a man who demanded he swear on a Bible that the Moon landing was not staged. Good for him. He also said, “Tang sucks. “
