What I Heard This Week! 10-15-2020
A 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, nicknamed Stan, sold to an unidentified bidder for a record $31.8 million last month at Christie’s auction, making it the most expensive dinosaur fossil ever sold. It was originally estimated to sell for between $6 million and $8 million, however, after only 20 minutes of telephone bidding, the final sale price nearly quadrupled these estimates. It was found in South Dakota in 1987, by Stan Sacrison, an amateur paleontologist (I guess that’s where Stan got his name), and is considered to be one of the best specimens ever discovered, comprised of 188 bones, 40 feet long, 13 feet tall and teeth that are over 11 inches long. The last complete skeleton of a T. rex was auctioned in 1992. “Sue” sold for $8.36 million to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago with major corporations like Disney and McDonalds chipping in for funding.
In my life, I don’t think I have ever turned down an offer to watch a good western. John Wayne, Butch Cassidy, Josey Wales, Giant, A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Maybe it’s the jeans. Today I read that Tom Hanks will be starring in (wait…Tom Hanks in a western?!?), News of the World, the story about an Army veteran and widower, who escorts a young German girl back to her relatives in Central Texas in the 1870’s, shortly after her “rescue” from the Kiowa community (native American tribe) she had lived with for four years. It is scheduled for release by Universal Pictures on Christmas Day 2020. The novel was a finalist for the National Book Award and Tom Hanks loved it. Fox 2000 grabbed the movie rights (along with the actor) just eight months after the book’s release. I hope, but doubt, that our world will be ready to venture into movie theatres by Christmas, but I bet Tom Hanks will figure out something, so we all get to see it in the middle of a global pandemic.
Photographer, Desiree Anzalone, the great-granddaughter of comedy legends, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, died of breast cancer at the end of September. Desiree was only 31. She was 25 years old when she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy along with rounds of chemotherapy. In 2018 she was found to be suffering from stage 4 cancer and it had metastasized to her lungs, liver, and bones. Breast Cancer Awareness month. Scheduled your mammogram yet?
Data shows that 2020 had the warmest September on record. The LA Lakers have won a record-tying 17th NBA Championship. That’s number four for LeBron James. There were 837,499 recreational visits recorded last month at Yellowstone National Park, which is mostly in Wyoming. It was the park’s busiest September ever. Singapore will plant one million trees by 2030 as the government tries to improve habitat for the city and state’s wildlife while improving living conditions for its human residents. Now, they are saying that Coronavirus actually can survive on your skin for 9 hours.
According to Texas Monthly, Willie Nelson has blessed us with 143 albums, so they decided to rank those albums. It is a history lesson. He has been country, western swing, gospel, flamenco, orchestra, jazz, and acoustic. I am going to list the top five. #1. Phases and Stages (1973) #2. Red Headed Stranger (1975) #3. Stardust (1978) #4. …and then I wrote (1962) and #5. Shotgun Willie (1973). Pick up a copy of Texas Monthly to find out how the other 138 albums ranked, plus you can read all the great stuff TM wrote, AND it IS great writing. So, #7. Who’ll Buy My Memories? The IRS Tapes was recorded after the IRS raided his ranch in November 1990, then thumped him with a $32 million bill for delinquent taxes. He refused to declare bankruptcy and started working to pay off his debt. He performed a new song in a Taco Bell commercial. He signed Jose Cuervo to sponsor a tour. He played Branson. The stories that they tell about each of the 143 albums should be put in a book. It is such a great read. No, it is better than that. It is worth a whole subscription, because every single month, you will find something excellent to read about the great state of Texas. You would spend more money going out to dinner.

Did you ever notice that when you put the 2 words, The and IRS together, it spells Theirs? Yes, as a matter of fact, I have been working on income tax this week. 😊
Pabst Blue Ribbon is making a cannabis seltzer. I do not know what to suggest here that will make it sound interesting or delicious. There is a tropical wave out there somewhere showing signs of organization, with 30% chance of cyclone formation later in the week. AMC, the world’s largest theater chain, says it may run out of cash by early 2021, as theaters around them close their doors again due to the pandemic. (Hello. There are very few of us that aren’t in the same boat as AMC.) Europe is now reporting more daily virus infections than the U.S., Brazil, or India – the countries that have been driving global case count for months as the public grows weary and indifferent, continuing to show total lack of concern or emotion towards coronavirus guidelines. We could be past this by now if everyone had done their part. Japan’s top Olympic swimmer, Daiya Seto, has resigned as captain of the team, after admitting to an extramarital affair that was exposed by a tabloid. He apologized for his irresponsible behavior. Wow. Consequences. Next week I will try to explain why female moles can grow testicles. So, stay tuned.
October 13th was National No Bra Day. I did not have knowledge of this information or I would have let you know, so you could celebrate the day properly. Instead, I will use this space as a gentle reminder to call someone your love, or someone you just like a little, and get them to schedule their mammogram.
As we drove through the intersection of Lake Road and FM-2004 in LJ, my daughter and I saw a big fish laying in the road, right in the middle of the intersection. The next day, he was still there, so I tried to take a picture to determine what kind of fish it was. It was a nice-sized, probably 2 to 3 lbs. or more. I am still wondering how in the world the fish got there. I do wish Mr. Fish were here to tell me his side of the story, because there IS a story, and I bet it was a good one. Have a great weekend.
